Out of the 4 walls in this little shop, 3 of the walls are covered in MEAT! Think European smoked meat, think sausages and think mom and pop shop. That's what J N & Z Deli is. I was in the shop for 15 minutes and they were so patient answering all of my questions. They were also very accomodating and let me take 4 or 6 slices of each type of meat. Specialty European meat shop - that's the appeal, that's what I wanted when I made the trek all the way to commercial drive at the recommendation of a Czech friend who would go there frequently. Specialty European meats is what I got all right! We wanted to get stocked up to host a little Vancouver Oktoberfest (pre-extended COVID restrictions of course). Lots of options available. Smokies, prosciutto, pancetta, cheeses, imported spreads... everything one could need to make an enviable spread to rave about. A little sneaky note is that they do not accept credit cards, even in this pandemic - bring cash or debit - but I think cash is preferred. I was definitely pleased with the meat products that I purchased, however my review is low because I definitely was not pleased with the intra-employee disrespect that I witnessed. My friend and I were the only two customers in the shop when we first got there and the young man helping me wasn't moving especially quickly... but there was no real rush and I wasn't bothered. Before I had all of my products sliced and packaged, a couple more customers came in so my friend, who had been helped, waited outside. Understandably, now there was a bit of a wait because of the young man who was not moving especially quickly. Though he was admittedly slow, another woman working there wearing red glasses was very unkind to him. She made comments targeted at his molasses-like speed, and they weren't gentle. I could imagine that working at a deli on a nice October day is not the young man's dream job but having someone else be obviously condescending towards you would really be an inspiration to do better - more of a discouragement for sure. The products of the store were good, the culture was not :( I am sure that I can find lovely imported meats from somewhere with a better work environment. read more

Maybe it is because I now only eat meat on a rare occasion (such as now), that I found J, N & Z Deli smokehouse a bit of a trip when I first walked in. Never mind the questionably (in)sane woman who butted in front of me with a jar of pickles, the shop is very authentic with smoked meat hanging from everywhere and the scent of smoky flavour permeating the shop. My fears were quelled as soon as I spotted a VERY authentic Ukrainian sausage (kolbassa) my absolute favourite, and a treat from that was passed down from my Ukrainian Baba and Mum. One bite in and I'm hooked! I will definitely come back here from now one for my fix! The authenticity is no joke as the owners are from Yugoslavia and they have been sharing their smoked meat with Vancouver-ites for decades. Lucky us! read more

Do you love meat? I don't mean "do like meat" or "do you eat a lot of meat". I mean do you LOVE meat, in the carnal way? This stunning Eastern European smokehouse should be a tourist attraction and mandatory shopping for anyone who thinks that they LOVE meat. The tiny floor space has room for 6 people but, 15 will squeeze in. The walls are hung floor-to-ceiling and corner-to-corner with smoked and aging bacon. When the walls are full, bacon and sausage hangs suspended from the ceiling. I wish I had bacon and sausage instead of streamers at my last birthday party. Saturdays are the sabbath here with a 4-foot tall pyramid of smoked pork hocks piled in the window and 20-pound trays of fresh smoked meat loaf in the display cases. Who knew that communion was served by the pound and wrapped in butcher paper? And get here early because it's all gone by midday. The smell is deep and warm and permeating. The best way to eat is.. probably is the way it is, with crackers or cheese. I decided to cook the sausage in a pasta and I think it took out the flavour a little bit. I enjoyed the the Beef tenderloin more, as it was thinly sliced, unlike the link of sausage. Both were full of flavour, well cured. For one link of sausage and about 12 slices of beef, it came it $3.00! There are so many other types of meats to try... We got some of their beef tenderloin; pork neck & smoked bacon - we got over 100g of each and the total cost was just over $10 which was incredibly reasonable. The bacon was probably our favorite, amazing and deep flavor. The beef was great when paired with some mustard. The pork neck was just a little too "porky" in flavor and so this is probably an "us" issue, not a complaint to be directed at the store. You can taste the care & skill in their products and so if you are planning a picnic or wanting to put together a meat & cheese platter then you should stop by this place for sure. read more

Magical meat shop on Commercial - truly an experience. One step in the door and the smell will start you drooling. Whether you want more traditional cold cuts or sausages or more eclectic Hungarian bacons or exotic dried meats, this store is a fantastic place. I find the prices to be no higher than local grocers for fresh cut sandwich meats and seems to be cheaper than the Grotta down the block (if you want cheese for your meats, definitely make a stop at the La Grotta Del Formaggio on the same block). read more

Prepare to enter meat heaven! The delightful smoky smell of meat penetrates every sensor in your nose upon first entry. Staff are delightfully funny and helpful, especially the one with the red glasses. She told me she was the boss. Don't hesitate to sample a few things, as everything is completely fresh, delicious, and made right there on site! There's also a great selection of specialty European jarred goods, including spreads, mayos, mustards, pickles, peppers...and the list goes on. Hands down the best deli on the drive! Have been here a few times now and it never fails to satisfy a meat craving. I tried the dry smoked bacon last visit, which can be sold out, and its my least favourite thing. While the regular bacon was nicely cut, I received a big chunk of the dry smoked bacon that once I got it home I can barely cut with my kitchen knifes. Will try in use it up this weekend in a batch of split pea soup, if I can actually cut it up! Their sausages are made for taking up the mountain on a hike, they could be the perfect camping food. I have been having a daily BLT made with their regular bacon and its delicious. They aren't many of these old time shops around so drop in when you get a chance and I'm sure you'll be back. read more

Just had the worst service here. So disappointed. I think they seem like lovely folks that connect with the community. And I certainly appreciate that they have great personal relationships with their customers. I also don't mind waiting my turn. It's just that I took a number and I was continuously ignored as they served customers they knew. So, if you know them then I'm sure this is a great deli to shop at. I'm sad to say that even though I love their product and want to support local, I'll think twice before I come back. I have been coming here before I could speak and the ladies have always been lovely :) I would look up in awe and excitement at the curing meats on the walls and say in my toddler voice "Daddy, Daddy - KOLBASZ!" and the ladies used to give me a little dry kolbaz to munch on while my parents shopped; I was more than content :) Have been coming here ever since. The polish links, hunter sausage cold cuts, spicy dry kolbaz, hanging bacon and liver patee are just a few of my favorites. Each December its a MUST in the family to come here and stock up. Truly authentic flavors just like my parents grew up with when they were kiddies. You have not had any better of a deli than this. It is absolutely wonderful - staff shine like their products. I don't go anywhere else -- this is the holy grail of tradition of which I am keeping alive for my family. Best Bacon in Vancouver. Old school, real smoked and cured meaning it is hard to slice and super salty unless blanched and then fried. Honestly the best bacon I have ever had. This place is the king of cured meats in Vancouver. But it gets 5 stars because of the ludicrously low prices... They only take cash and it is worth every penny. Ask to buy by the amount ("10$ worth of your smoked pork/beef loin please...") and you will usually get a bit extra. The smoked/cured beef loin is ranked as one of the best things to taste in Vancouver by Vancouver Magazine. Their cured sausages are also amazing. The spicy chorizo has some real heat so watch out. Add that to a hollowed out portugese bun from either Santa Barbara Grocery or Fratelli Bakery (*both nearby) and some cheese and you have the cheapest/fastest/best lunch on Commercial Drive. First time there, I was offered free samples of several different meats to try, enjoyed the pepperoni and smoked pork, and was lucky to get the last of the beef jerky to sample. Being something of a charcuterie officianado thought I'd give this place a try Big mistake! purchased 2 Hungarian Supposedly dry sausages and was asured that they were dry- they were in fact red inside and could have been mistaken for a fresh sausage.Assistant told me to eat it in a week and then it would be ready to eat.How does a supposedly reputable establishment get away with selling this kind of inferior product to the public ! They are obvioulsy wanting to get the product on to the shelves,at the expense of offering a product that is far from ready for consumption-at the risk of getting the unsuspecting public sick.I will never return to this place-far better offerings at your local \supermarket !! read more

J, N, Z has been the most amazing family run business on the Drive for decades. the quality of their pork products is very high, and consistent. they really know what they are doing. My favourite sausage is the Polish Kolbasa which has no fat in it, just pork and garlic.. so delicious!! but I feel very sad because they have been closed for renovations recently. I need them back soon!!! I miss my pork tenderloin and the other treats they have.. all made on the premises. read more

While I have no complaints about the actual products (great meat products), it's the unhygienic practice I must voice my concern with. I came in and bought some sausages (smoked, so they don't need to be cooked). The girl that served me didn't wash her hands before handling the sausages with her bare fingers; no plastic gloves, or using paper, or tongs to grab the sausages with; she simply used her unwashed hands. This is a very unhygienic and dangerous health hazard. Someone with a chronic illness could fall prey to severe health complications under these circumstances (such as my frail mother whom I bought the sausages for). This establishment should know better, and they should properly instruct their employees on the basics of hygiene and food & safety precautions. read more
