This is without a doubt the best Italian grocery store North of Boston. We have breakfast there on Sundays at Anglea's diner, then shop for our weekly meats and produce. We order our Easter ham and Thanksgiving turkey as well as party catering food from J. Pace's and bring sausage, cheeses, and cookies with us to our family in Florida. When we don't feel like cooking, we pickup dinner, already made...different kinds of chicken...artichokes...rice balls, shrimp scampi...broccoli rabe...meatballs...pasta... etc. And, our grandchildren only want Joe's macaroni and cheese. The staff is always extremely friendly and willing to provide cooking suggestions. read more

I used to go to the old saugus location and was disappointed when they closed that location. I was glad to recently realize that they just moved. Now for the review. I am now really disappointed because I got some sausages which where kind of expensive and found they contained a lot of inedible gristle. What a bummer. For the price I expected better. Listen....these people make one of the best Italian subs I've had. BUT.......if you go to this specific location (Saugus, MA) on the weekend... without fail...the bread is ALWAYS STALE..blatantly stale..and they don't use the romaine lettuce as they do on the week days..just that shitty chopped iceberg lettuce....ruining there perfect formula for an Italian Sub. So if you want the good version of their italian sub..just please go on a weekday...or go to the Seaport or NorthEnd location anytime. ..Just stop with the stale bread...i think that shit cut my gums last time I got a sub here on the weekend... I used to go here weekly, until yesterday. I purchased a lb of sirloin for my stirfry. When I opened the meat last night it smelled really weird, almost like a play-dough type smell. I purchased the meat on Sunday evening and I waited 3 days which I honestly don't think is a LOT of time. I get it should be cooked within a couple days but it was 3 days and I believe it still should have been fine. When I called, I was informed there was nothing they could do. My frustrating dealings with this company's incompetencies and utter disregard of customer service: I ordered a cake for my grandmothers 89th birthday. I told the female attendant I wanted a buttermilk cake with chocolate frosting. She told me this was possible but would cost extra for buttermilk. When I received the cake it was chocolate with vanilla frosting.... I called the Saugus location and spoke with the insensitive owner who told me that driving one hour total to retrieve the correct cake is a minor obstacle I would encounter in life... how insensitive. He then told me they don't offer buttermilk only yellow cake. Not only do their employees not know their menu, the inconsiderate owner clearly doesn't care about customer satisfaction or customers in general. Taking a correct order for cake is not rocket science and even though every business is capable of making mistakes, ONE WOULD THINK THE OWNER WOULD APOLOGIZE PROFUSELY AND BE CONCERNED WITH INCONVENIENCING A CUSTOMER. The place doesn't sacrifice quality for anything, but you're gonna pay for it!!! The meat is top notch, produce is rediculously over priced, and the deli, I have some gripes the paper they use, actually takes all of the moisture out of the cold cuts too quicky. For an Italian specialty store, you think the would be more proficient and slicing the specialty items, Prociutto, Dry Cure, etc. all end up on top of each other even when I request other wise. They carry Dietz and Watson great stuff, but Shaws right down the street carries it for a lot cheaper... there specialy items, I guess they can charge what they want, because there aren't any other places like it in the area. I have been a customer for a few years and I will never return after my recent visit. I bought a pizza gana on 3/26 and it was not cooked right. My guests immediately commented on it and said something was wrong with it. I also bought butter cookies that tasted very stale. With that being said they went in the trash this morning. Plenty of parking. Very neat and clean and the staff is very friendly. They have so many things you cant find at the supermarket mostly imported items, and lots of italian stuff. The meats are top quality and the sausages are home made and delish. I really like the broccoli rabe. Went here for lunch, got a chicken parm sandwich. I figured since they are an Italian place they would make a good chicken parm sub. Sadly not so much, the sandwich was very soggy with little sauce on it and the chicken had a real rubbery texture. Not impressed. They have good food in their store part but it's too pricey. Like most places of this sort, there are some very good things and some not so good things. On the good side is their prepared food. Not a vast selection, but what they do, they do well. The salads, soups, deli salads are all top notch. The sandwiches are actually filled. In fact, the eggplant is so huge my wife and I can share one! The deli men are accomodating but not very patient, but then you don't wait too long in line. Accolades to the butcher. They will trim, cut, package meat just the way you want it. And their sausages are great. It's almost like going to and old-fashioned butcher shop. Customer service in two areas, pastry and sandwiches, could use an upgrade. The older women tend to rush you and can be downright rude, they should keep in mind that Spinellis isn't that far away. So, in the end, we go there for cold cuts, meats and prepared foods. We tend to call ahead for our sandwich orders, which cuts down on the face-to-face with the older women. They offer items not found at the supermarkets so we keep returning and enjoy the good parts. read more

Love the employees here - Always willing to please - Just yesterday (Fathers Day) I needed a dessert at 4:00 in the afternoon - since Whoopie Pies are my husbands favorite and Pace's makes the Best - I took a chance going there and just as I expected they were out - BUT - the young girl behind the counter offered to make me up six of them if I wanted to wait a bit while she did so!! YES! Needless to say they were delicious as all their pastry is - I also purchased a Ricotta Cheese Pie a few days b/4 and it was to die for !! J.Pace & son is by far one of the most grotesque places I have yet to be. Although th food appears to be good quality it is not. All the old scali bread is either frozen or used for bruschetta. All of the cookies are previously frozen. Ive even witnessed a bakery girl drop a container of cookies on the floor and pick them up and put them back on the shelf. When the calzones start to look a little on the dingy side workers take them in the back and cut the ends off and change the dates on them. Everyone looks misrable in there. Ive witnessed Joe himself yell at prepared/bakery girls and have seen with my own eyes them crying. I would not recommend shopping here. read more

I give it 4 stars because they have the best sausage I've ever had. I'm going to make the trip myself soon, so I'll experience their customer service then. As someone who visited regularly in the past, I've not been back to J. Pace since before they moved to their new location. I usually purchased freshly cut imported provolone and asked for it. The man behind the counter said he had some that was already cut and I explained that I wanted it freshly cut. He rudely claimed it was just wrapped and I bought a piece at around $11.00. When I got home, I saw the cheese had hardened at least 1-1/2 inches from the rind. That told me the cheese wasn't so freshly cut or even fresh. I realize some of the staff is rude and this cheese man was no exception, but his rudeness and lies cost me money. There ARE other places to buy freshly cut imported provolone cheese for the same money. Boston's North End has several and you'll spend the same amount or maybe a few pennies less. There's also a J. Pace there, but I would pass it by. It takes 20 minutes or so to drive into Boston during non-rush hour times of day. read more
