We came here for a quick weekday dinner. The extensive menu had plenty of familiar items and some unique ones. We went with an appetizer sampler that included mozzarella sticks, potato, skins, and buffalo wings. Everything was very tasty. For my entrée, I ordered the Gorgonzola salad with marinated skirt steak. It was out of this world. Big enough for me to take at least half home and enjoy for lunch the next day. My future mother-in-law hosted a brunch here following a funeral. They were accommodating on short notice, and the space was ample for the group. They also worked with us regarding a cash bar to keep the tab down, no pressure at all to shell out $$ for an open bar brunch which was very much appreciated. Food was pretty good: bacon was the star of the show as it was nice and crispy. It's not that greasy floppy slop you'll encounter at other buffets. Sausage was good too, so I can tell you know their swine! The eggs were a fast mover at the buffet but since I don't eats, I can't speak to those. They also left bowls on the table, each with 3-4 bagels, cream cheese, butta and below that: coffee cake. I heard people say good things about the bagels and enjoyed my plain one just fine. I also liked the coffee cake, moist and sweet, not too crumbly. A little weird having that underneath bagels in the same bowl. Fortunately there wasn't too much flavor transfer between items and I understand it logistically. Coffee was surprisingly robust as well - not the usual weak and watery diner stuff. Service was decent, had to grab a server for a reminder about coffee once but that's the only issue I know of. Place was quiet at 11-11:30 on a Saturday and it met our needs perfectly. The food is terrible. Fried and dried out chicken fingers and fries, is the only thing I experienced. It was ridiculous because it was for the Super Bowl. I arrived there in the early evening, but there were not even five people there. Because of that, I thought I'd get great service and delicious appetizers at least. Been here a ton of times, even celebrated my birthday here. Their parking lot isn't very big, but I've never had any problems finding parking on the street. The service has mostly been good. I definitely feel like we've received better service when coming with larger groups. They have half off apps on Mondays from 5 pm - 10 pm. They serve wings that are well seasoned. They come in orders of 10, 25, or 50 pieces. My favorites are their barbecue wings and their cajun dry rub. I've also tried their mac n cheese wedges, fried calamari, mozzarella sticks, baked stuffed clams, fried pickles, and popcorn shrimp. The fried calamari is super worth it. This is a great place and Oceanside institution! It's no flinch 5 stars! Took my wife for a mid week date. Hadn't been here in years and I've been missing out. The food is an A+ as is the service. It's a casual family owned bar and grill with a HUGE menu of classic American, Italian and bar food. I had the steak tidbits w/fries, spectacular! My wife had chicken fingers and waffle fries, classic and delicious. We should have had enough to take home...but it was so good we ate it all! It doomed our intentions of an after dinner walk, but it was worth it. The boardwalk will be there tomorrow! I have to mention our server was really awesome! I know they have been around for some time, but this was my first time going, and it did not disappoint one bit. Got seated right away by the manager. The decor was definitely not touched since their earlier days, but I could tell it was nostalgic. The pale wood booths and walls were comforting somehow. There were def the regulars that dine there and some larger groups. The server we had was the sweetest and very attentive. Also, looked like the staff all worked well together and EVERYONE did their part, even the manager was bussing and bringing the orders out from the kitchen, while packing up takeout orders. Had to get their signature tidbits and ordered chicken fingers as well. The fingers were crispy and still moist inside. Fries as expected were crunchy and not oily. The tidbits were perfectly cooked. The cheesy garlic bread and the flavorful sliced steak was so good! New craving unlocked! Food was amazing, still family-owned which is also amazing, and the variety on their menu there will not leave you unsatisfied. Can't wait for the next time I get to go! A bunch of friends and I have been having brunch here somewhat regularly on Sundays. We generally show up at opening (11am) and are seated right away without any problems. Service is always great, our food comes out fairly quickly and everything is just how we ordered it. I've been getting the 3 Eggs Any Style (over easy) with home fries and the $5 Skirt Steak add-on. My steak is always perfectly seasoned and cooked to my liking, my eggs are always runny (just how I ordered them) and my coffee cup is never empty. I also have to add that they have the most delicious crumb cake that is put out on the table during brunch -TRY IT. I've been going with 7 other people so I have to restrain myself and only eat one piece per visit. Will definitely continue to visit for our Sunday Group Brunch Adventures. read more

I used to go out to eat here very often with my family growing up in Long Island, and I still come here whenever I come back to visit family. The last few visits over the last few years have been considerably poor and subpar experiences. The food is pretty good but the service is the worst - they have managed to always get my order wrong during the dinner rush and even during downtime - the customer service and attention to detail is dreadful. I have only come back hoping that the service can only get better, but it never gets any better - it's not even close to what it used to be 5 or 10 years ago. I will not plan on coming back. My friend and i wanted just some dessert and drinks and we took a chance at a place on Merrick called J Paul Terrace Cafe. Walked in a people were at the bar and the host behind the bar said we could sit at an elevated table/stool. Laura came over and she was so welcoming. Seem to always be more careful going into bars that no one knows you yet. But she was so welcoming we relaxed immediately. Given that it's an Orish bar with a restaurant attached to it was even better. There was noone in the restaurant since we got there a little late but the bar had a good amount of people. It just felt good to be around humans again just trying to relax and have a drink. The other bartender (male) was also quite friendly and we ordered a Guiness and a cocktail. The Guiness was quite smooth and went down so fast and it hit the spot. I complained loudly about how maybe there was a hole in the glass and half the patrons picked up their own glasses to complain as well. It was a very nice moment and brought lots of laughs. It felt like afterwards there were more drinks being poured!! Lauri was such a wonderful person. She normally does not bartend on Sat, but we were lucky to have her that night. She normally waitresses in the restaurant attached to bar. We will make it a point to try the food there when she is there for sure!!! We did manage to get some desserts including a nice torturous and a peanut butter chocolate type cake. Did enjoy both, preferred the tartufo. We stayed there until closing and unfortunately do to pandemic restrictions, had to leave the premises prior to avoid them from getting any tickets. The food was fantastic, the staff were fantastic and absolutely went out of their way to make things go smooth and relaxing for us. Crankin bar / restaurant. This place rocks- excellent bartenders with an even more fun bunch of whacked people at the bar. Loud and fun is the best way to explain this place. Ton of fried foods for the fat bastard in your crowd and almost everything is billed as "the famous J. Pauls" as in the "Famous J. Pauls buffalo wings". There are a load of TV's around the bar for the sport nut and they even have para-mutual betting machines there so you can blow your paycheck on the ponies while drinking. I went tonight with my family. I had The Marinated Moni burger with shoestring fries. I've had great burgers in the past (old Donovan's of Woodside, the chocolate infused burger in The Hershey Lodge) but this was probably the one of the BEST burgers that I've ever had. I like to ask the server for their choice after giving 3 possible choices. I usually say "don't tell me, you pick". I am so happy with her pick. My wife had her usual skirt steak sandwich with sautéed onions and melted gorgonzola and sweet potato fries. My normal choice. My kids had grilled salmon and pasta. All I can say is there wasn't anything left. I will say that the marinated skirt steak is as good as Frank's (RVC) or any other for a lot cheaper price. read more

The good news first. The food is good and the prices are fair. Our family was celebrating a birthday and an anniversary so we decided to try this restaurant. It was on a Tuesday night and we figured they would be able to seat 8 of us which they did promptly. We order cocktails and appetizers which came out in a timely fashion. Our meals took quite a bit longer thoug. Our waiter helped bring the main dishes over and then left the table without making sure we were all served. My dinner was missing and I assumed our waiter went back to the kitchen for my dinner. After about 3-4 minuted I got up from the table to look for the waiter only to see him chatting with another table in the restaurant. I had to go over and ask him where was my meal. He told me there was some kind of mixup and that my dinner would be right out. However my meal was rushed and it was not very good. The waiter never came back to the table and asked us how our meals were or if we wanted any more cocktails which we did. We left very disappointed in the service and had no desire for coffee and desserts after the poor service. I do not understand why waiters feel their job is finished once the meals have been served. Don't these people think that if they ask the table about another round of drinks or coffee or desserts that they would actually get bigger tips? Good food at fair prices but the wait staff is very poorly trained. There are lots of restaurants in this area so I would say you can skip this place. read more

I have been here several times. Everything is usually consistent. Good food, friendly staff, a nice place to eat. On sat night I was in the mood for surf and turf. I ordered the filet mignon medium and it ended up coming out rare. Not a big deal, they took it back to put back on flame. I know they advertised an 8oz steak. It was really small for a dinner plate. They gave 4 shrimp scampi. I think the plate was more of an appetizer plate than a dinner plate. They put a lot of fries that pretty much overpowered plate. Not worth $35.00. Maybe a 12oz steak with 6 shrimp would have been more filling. I will not order that again. Everything else was good. Wings are always great. read more

Came here for brunch on Father's Day. We had a reservation, the place wasn't too packed. My parents come here frequently for the brunch and rave about it. They give you complimentary bagels and crumb cake to start. The crumb cake is to die for! With any entree you get unlimited Bloody Mary, mimosa, screwdriver - and they keep them coming! I ordered the omelet which was a big portion and very filling. You can add steak on the side of any meal for only $5. The steak is amazing and marinated, you don't need any type of sauce with it. I could not believe how bad my experience was at this place ... My first clue to when he could have picked up and left was when I ordered a beer and handed the bartender 20 dollars and she gave me back 5 dollars.. I had to ask her how much is a beer and why was I charged 15 dollars. She gave me ten dollars back and no apology. I then asked if I could have a 100 dollar voucher for the OTB machine. She gave me the voucher and it did not work in the machine .. I did not alert her to that fact as she was too busy serving her obviously drunk customers. She paid little attention to anything at the bar.. I finally asked her in between her serving drunk customers to cash the voucher that would not work in the machine. She then proceeded to spend 10 minutes unable to cash the voucher either due to her own inebriation or incompetence .. As time went by and I had to leave I once again asked her if she can finish cashing my OTB voucher and she acted surprised when I said you never cashed it when I handed it to you.. She then was having difficulty with this task and handed me a voucher for 66.50. I told her this was no my voucher. She acted weird and appear to accuse me of putting something in my pocket.. I told her I don't know what you are talking about, but at this point it appeared to me she had been drinking. She then finally gave me back my 100 voucher and never cashed it.. She then asked me if I was happy, and obviously I was not as all, a s all I wanted from this woman was to cash my voucher .. At this point I was just grateful to get the voucher back, and now have to inconveniently cash it in another establishment.. I was completely outraged by this bartender BS, but acted calm and just couldn't wait to leave .. The owner should know that this was an awful experience, and the people she was over-serving at the bar I guess made it home safe, but this bar should concern themselves with the dram shop act and the Shenanigans of this bartender.. they are regulated by the SLA and OTB not to mention she was not concerned about the covid restrictions . The in-laws live within walking distance from J Pauls and I tend to frequent this cafe when I'm waiting for them to get home from church or when I need to slip away for a bit like the outlaw that I am. Last week I ordered the house burger with swiss cheese, bacon, sauteed mushrooms and onions and a fried egg. It was perfect! My waitress checked on me often and I was a happy camper. However, the bar area is hit or miss. Because I'm not a "regular" I feel like I crash a party whenever I come in on Sunday afternoons - stares and whispers all around. It also doesn't help when the bartender doesn't put out the welcome mat. Oh well, I guess that's my cross to bear. There is far less testosterone during the week so I keep J Pauls on my rotation. They make great crumbcake which is served during Sunday brunch and you can't go wrong if you order pub food. They have 14 flat screen TVs as well as FAST TRACK, an OTB horse wagering system. I've eaten here 3 times in the last week due to it's being walking distance from South Nassau Communities Hospital. The service is fast and friendly. They make you feel like they're actually happy you came in. Their scallop appetizer had a nice portion of scallops for two people, were fresh and tender. Their Cafe Roast Beef sandwich, also a good choice. Their burgers are a nice size, cooked to order the way I requested. Not a fan of their regular fries, but the steak fries, sweet potato fries and spicy fries are very good. The beef and barley soup tasted home made, was very thick and delicious. They have a great bar with plenty of locals. It gets a little loud, not annoying loud, just people having a good time. The place is clean, service is crisp and friendly, food is fresh and delicious. I"ll have to compliment the service at this place. It was good despite us being there with a rather large group. I enjoy the variety of things from amazing looking salads (didn't get a chance to try them) to sandwiches, burgers, apps and dinners. A couple of us got the tidbits, which gives you a little more bang for your buck. Garlic bread topped with your choice of meat and sauce and cheese with a side of fries or onion rings. I'm not just 5 star happy, really I'm not. I think this place is worth it. The buffalo chicken tidbits are like heaven on a plate. The onion rings are awesome. The garlic bread with cheese is also awesome, as is the sauce. For that alone, I'd give it 5 stars. Best tidbits I've ever had. I'm told the french dip is pretty damn good too. All that plus seasonal Sam Adams? I'm sold. That's all I need in life. The waitstaff is always great too.
