A surprisingly wonderful experience. The service was exceptional and the food was really good.

I've been to this diner a lot with my boyfriend, and have enjoyed it every time, expect for this morning. Someone needs to check with the staff, Tuesday morning. According to the waitress, they were out of creamer, our meals came out 10 minutes apart, and we had to wait 15 minutes to get our debit card back. The waitress accidentally charged us $493.00, but not on the debit card according to her. I still have no idea why it took 15 minutes to get our debit card back if we were not charged that amount on the card. I hope it's not because we politely requested to sit by a window instead of in-front of the cashier where the hosted tried to seat us first -sorry. The place was empty, and there was plenty of seats. Bees apparently were flying around the outdoor seating, which was why the hostess didn't offer it to us, so beware lol. read more

Got the vanilla chai and stuffed strawberry French toast. Both were absolutely divine . We have visited J's once before on our way home from NC. This is located in a strip mall next to Weis grocery store and a liquor store - so it's hidden. This little gem has a mellow vibe; all of the staff are chill and friendly. Expect to wait on the weekends or holidays. The food is delicious. I've had the Triathlete and the Very Berry Waffle the two times we visited and both were hot (critical in a diner), fresh, and made with love. This was a gourmet meal for sure! We had our first visit last week and were seated very quickly. The Environment was pretty crowded and noisy and we were seated next to a neon sign that turned us green. I got the Chilaguelis. They were nothing special. The place seems popular, so they must be well liked. I just it found it loud, crowded, and average as far as food. read more

It's always a great Omen when the breakfast place your about to check out has a Rainbow leading to the front door! Inside was friendly fast service, a great menu, and delicious breakfasts! From my son's cute "Lion King" pancakes to my wife's healthy Acai Bowl to my hearty omelet, potatoes, and toast we loved the food. The coffee, fresh squeezed juices, and vanilla chai were all top notch. The menu had lots of creative vegan options along with just about every breakfast food you could ask for. The waitress was friendly, fast, and knowledgeable. We will be back to this delicious restaurant at the end of the rainbow. read more

Huge menu, cute retro diner with a modern touch and the sweetest most accommodating waitresses. When my sister in law ordered a turmeric juice shot, I expected a tiny size like I'm accustomed to in Los Angeles or anywhere I've been serving juice shots but no--massive! Introducing new favorite Hagerstown gem. J's Diner has beautiful, unique dishes (see my photos!!) to satisfy literally any craving. Since I'm usually craving breakfast, we opted for the beans & plantains breakfast bowl and the Mexican street corn hash, but also snagged a Cali chicken salad. The beans & plantains bowl was my fave hands down: perfectly seasoned and creamy black beans, pockets of tangy feta and crema, and sweet plantains, yesss. To make an already incredible dish perfect, a couple yolky sunny side up eggs pulled everything together. The Mexican street corn hash is a dish to snag too-- tons of home fry style potatoes, corn, chicken, chorizo, guacamole, chipotle sauce, and of course two sunny side up eggs. A little spicy, savory, so good. I didn't try the salad but can say that it looks gorgeous, huge with tons of greens, corn, tomatoes, peppers, and a LOT of chicken and melty cheese. Talk about a solid lunch or dinner dish. We were able to order online easily and pick up curbside. Food was somehow ready in only 20 minutes despite very obviously being made with great care. A solid choice for a home cooked, fresh, and served with a smile Breakfast or Brunch. Lots of vegan options. Lots of healthy choices. Everyone at my table raved about the Mexican Sweet Corn hash. The Huevos Rancheros were phenomenal, with Pico de gallo, Sunnyside up eggs over beans and a hard tortilla. Fried avocados, while unusual on menus, were an enjoyable surprise. Everything is clean. Got lucky on a road trip to find this gem of a place! The food was outstanding and our server was absolutely charming and full of pride for the restaurant and the ownership! Joel the owner was so nice to come over and share the history with us. Swinging by this place was literally the highlight of my week. I was so craving some favorite veggie options I get in ocean city since so many places don't offer even minimal vegetarian/vegan options. So I got the street corn hash and subbed the meat for vegan chorizo. It was AWESOME! Light and flavorful. Service was also excellent. My husband got the apple pancakes and enjoyed them. See bottom of review for warning. Fantastic place! The food might be called "elevated diner food" but the prices are quite reasonable. In our group of four we have an omnivore, a vegan, and two kids, one of which needs to avoid gluten. It was effortless to get us all a filling, delicious breakfast lunch. We had French toast, GF pancakes, vegan breakfast tacos, and "street corn hash" and we were all happy with it. The service is good. The atmosphere is casual but not chaotic and we had no trouble talking. Definitely will stop in next time we are in Hagerstown! Update: the gluten free pancakes had gluten and so we have a sick kid now. Beware. read more

Great, but respectfully, the service could be better and there could be better training. Servers rarely bring cream when you order coffee (that should be automatic unless someone orders their coffee black). Second time we experienced this and because they were very busy it took about 10 minutes for us to get cream. My breakfast was okay but cold - they took it back and heated it up. Million $ bacon is unbelievably good. Fresh orange juice a huge plus - but $8!!!!! Finally, I beg of the owner - please offer real maple syrup. It is really what every diner/restaurant offers except for some reason Maryland doesn't know this?? You can order small single serving bottles and add it as an extra item so customers can choose to pay for it. Once you have real maple syrup you'll never be able to eat the artificial stuff again. read more

January 15, 2023 visited J's on a visit to hagerstown after I moved back to New York in 2019. Had brunch with some friends this was all of our first time . We waited about 20 minutes for a table because well there were lots of other patrons waiting to get a table as well. The wait was worth it !!! The atmosphere was very up beat relaxing and open. The staff was pleasant even our waitress ( sorry I forgot her name ) but she was fantastic!! The food looked good as we watched dishes being served at other tables but when ours came mines and my friend we both had the shrimp and grits my husband had the gyro platter with fries the fries were home made !!! This diner came highly recommended from the locals. When I think local, corner diner, I think cheap diner food. Home style cooking at its best. The menu was trendy with vegan options and normal breakfast food. $14 for 2 pancakes, eggs bacon is excessive considering other comparable restaurants it's roughly &7-8. The music is blaring and the seating isn't very comfortable. Small tables, with metal chairs. Very disappointed. Breakfast cost $30 for 2 people drinking water. I shutter to see what plain coffee costs. The quality was run of the mill breakfast food. Nothing fancy for the price. read more

So J's Diner did NOT disappoint-- it's a change from your typical diner fare!! And MORE! Healthy, interesting, I HAD the Buenos Trios )?) -- only thing is I would suggest making your pico or beans less runny (it ruins the tostadas/ 4 instead of 5 stars for that) or placing the crispy tortillas on top or on the side!
