Sorry to be the dissenting voice here, but we didn't like J Selby's much. We truly like the idea and the story behind the name, but the execution is flawed. Wonderful for people who need/want a plant based diet, but if you don't have to, why would you eat fake food? When they stick to real veggie dishes, they do ok. The Buffalo Cauliflower, for example, was pretty good. It consisted of just cauliflower. However, I had the Solo burger. It was trying to be a California burger. It was a complete failure. Dry and tasteless. Needed a bunch of water to get it down. I've had lots of veggie burgers all over the place and this was probably the worst. Like I said, if you don't have to eat like this, why would you? Wife had their chili. This tasted ok but the beans were inconsistently cooked. Some were soft and mushy as in way over cooked; some were under cooked. My complaint doesn't stop at the food. It is a small place but the noise is unbearable. It must be on purpose because it's a new structure and they put in nothing to dampen the sound. So, it's loud and the fake food isn't good. Now for the staff. Check in guy was nice and helpful but he was a bit quiet and with all the noise, I could not hear or understand much. Freaky part was the dude in the kitchen who looked like the executive chef as he was just standing there and didn't seem to be doing much cooking. Rather than watching his chefs, he stood there leering at the patrons. Made me rather uncomfortable. The patrons are the interesting part. Lots of really cool looking bohemian types. Great to see all sorts of folks in St. Paul. The people make the atmosphere fun but the quality of the food and the noise will keep me away. read more

Incredibly poor service and incompetent staff. Waited over 20 minutes in line only to be told that they couldn't honor a gift card because the computer couldn't read how much the "old" gift card was for ( this gift card is less than 6 months old) and there was no one on site who knew how gift cards worked. Now ... I'm a meat eater so I was a bit doubtful when walking into a plant based eatery. But as soon as you enter J. Selby's your senses are inundated with great smells of cooking food and the sizzle of fresh foods on the grill! I ended up eating their chili ... and wow! The right amount of spice and tons of flavor! I even like the fact that the green onions are served on the side (I mixed them into my chili right away!) , along with crispy tortilla chips. Always amazing! I've been coming here every weekend since May of 2017, trying the new specials and soyclone flavor of the week. My friends and I are never disappointed, they continue to improve their recipes and create the most delicious foods. I'd highly recommend the nachos during happy hour, along with the wings with ranch. My favorite entree is the buffalo "chicken" wrap. It tastes just like chicken, it's unreal. I've been to J. Selby's twice now and will definitely be going back. The first time I went, I ordered The Philly. The meat from Herbivorous Butcher was delicious, but there was hardly any cheeze. Good size for the price. The chips and salsa that came it were fantastic. My friend ordered the Street Tacos, which were colorful and delicious. We split a slice of carrot cake. It was good but not great. A little dry. The second time I went, I went during brunch. I got the Breakfast Hash and then split a slice of Cheeze cake. The Breakfast Hash had a nice amount of spice. The potatoes that came with it were fine, but plain. I cut them up and mixed them in with the hash. The garlic-tahini sauce was totally bomb. The Cheese cake was fine. Kind of custardy and a little bit tart. I like the jam on top. I would probably give this restaurant's 3.5-4 stars, but it's so great to be able to order anything I want on the menu. read more

It was my first time here with my family and we went during Saturday brunch and were not disappointed. My cousin ordered the biscuits and gravy and it was delicious! So nice to have comfort food and not have to make it yourself! His daughter got the pancakes and they were fluffy and tasty. We got both the regular and spicy breakfast hash. Both were amazing. If you want more flavor, go for the spicy hash. If you're worried about spice level, it was not spicy at all. I had to add a little Sriracha and then it was perfect. My first order of the regular hash was burnt and I had to send it back, but the staff gladly remade it and it came out within minutes. I got the Bloody Mary and it was nice and savory. I panicked for a second when my drink came out with the meat and cheese forgetting that I was in a vegan restaurant. Silly me! Overall, a great spot to get your brunch on! read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did, but it wasn't meant to be. Wings (buffalo) - 6/10 The buffalo sauce was thin and very salty. Emphasis on salt. I prefer a thicker and less salty buffalo sauce. The ranch was nice, strong dill flavor and doesn't leave you with that nasty ranch afterbreath like normal (non-vegan) ranch. Lots of big cauliflower florets and it's a very good portion for sharing. The Dirty Secret - 5/10 I'm going to say upfront I don't care for Herbivorous Butcher products. Something about their fake meats that's really overpowering. I've tasted it in their breakfast sausage and now the "beaf" patties in this burger. The top bun was flimsy and broke in half after I picked it up and set it down about three times. The cheese was good, but I could barely taste it behind the strong beaf flavor. The "special" sauce was anything but. Not sure why it's $15 when it's just two patties, three pieces of bread and two slices of cheese. Fries - 4/10 Crinkle fries. The type that don't stay crisp and are never crispy enough. The fries were okay, probably a 5/10 but I deducted a point due to the extreme levels of salt applied to them. The person who salted the fries must have a thirty pound hand. If you love overly salty foods or want to raise your blood pressure, this is your place. I wish they didn't rely so heavily on Herbivorous Butcher products. Make your own burger/fake meat. Give me a reason to want to come here (because something you made is from scratch and I can't get it anywhere else). read more

Food is good. Some of the stuff you can't even tell it's not a meat based product. The the buffalo wings are great. The Mediterranean bowl is ok, the wraps are quite good. Just a heads up, if you order online, be there within 15 minutes. I called after I made an online order because there is no place to write down a note and told them I would be about 30-45 minutes instead. They couldn't do anything because they already started making the food, must have been a slow night because this was about 10 seconds after I hit confirm. Neat-less to say, the food was barely warm. Although I am not either, I stilled enjoyed my cauliflower buffalo wings and the cookies and cream soyclone (non dairy soy blizzard)! When it first reopened my vegan friend brought me here and I was a little hesitant because I didn't know what the vegan food would be like as I was just starting to transition into the lifestyle. So, that being said, I wouldn't recommend the burgers to anyone that normally eats meat if they're expecting something that tastes exactly like a burger. Selby's are: Buffalo Wings, The Philly, Street Tacos (normal tortillas), and BBQ Beaf sandwhich!! Also, the service is great! It gets pretty busy around dinner from what I've experienced, so you just have to expect it'll take longer for your food to come out! The food is great, with a ton of creative options. I should say that I love meat, and I also love the food here. I have tried the dirty secret burger (YUM), nachos (fantastic), tacos, italian bowl, and cauliflower "buffalo wings" (spicy)... Which brings up the point-- everything I've tried has been a bit spicy, too much so for my taste. Then again, I don't like spicy. I believe it's the "meat" that has the spices, so hard to bypass, and kind of a bummer. The wings could have been fantastic but my mouth was burning :( same with the "sausage" in the Italian bowl. I've been vegan now for over 15 years and to finally have a place like this for "junk food" type vegan food is nice. Granted there are a few healthier options too - but if you're looking for that extra healthy or more granola-y vegan place I suggest another establishment like french meadow or fig and farro (before it closed due to COVID19 anyway). Overall, everything about this place is great. Staff has always been friendly and helpful - always willing to make anything "wrong" right with a smile. The only bummer about this place is really no fault of their own - it just gets busy - and when it's busy it can feel nerve racking to find a spot to sit. As for food, almost everything I've tried is pretty darn good. I preferred their old seiten style bacun before they switched to the herbivorous butcher's bacun. I just am not a huge fan of the herbivorous butcher's bacun - it's too dry. It's in a college area so I could see that making some older clientele or even suburbanites not used to "city" folk uncomfortable as this is not like a "ritsy" joint for those fancy folks. read more

I have now given this restaurant 4 chances to serve me a decent plant based meal. Today's meal was the worst, and I will not be coming back. My breakfast burrito was flavorless with large pieces of undercooked kale. The chocolate cake was rancid and reminiscent of spoiled nuts or oil. The counter service is confusing, and the cashier did not communicate to us how we should get our drinks after we ordered. The kitchen staff sang loudly to a song that was not the same as the one playing over the sound system. As a person who eats a whole food plant based diet and is able to cook plant based recipes, I am really disappointed in the food offered at this restaurant.
