Love the vibe of this place. It's warm and welcoming and feels like a local upscale neighborhood joint. Service is great from the host stand to the servers; really well done. We started with the Swedish meatballs which we didn't love. They're made with chicken which made them a bit to dry. The hubs had the lobster pappardelle which was delicious. (Very rich and filling) I had the butternut squash bisque which was so creamy and yummy! Friends of ours had the walleye nachos which they were really impressed with! If you're lucky, you'll find street parking out front, otherwise head the small lot behind the restaurant where you can enter through a rear door. read more

First time visiting this restaurant tonight after hearing good things. It did not disappoint. The restaurant is beautiful...beautifully decorated, with a cozy vibe and pleasant lighting. And no music so you can hear each other. Lovely! The service was efficient and friendly and helpful. Our server (Christina I believe) was on point with timing and recommendations and checking in appropriately. She was great. My friend and I each started with a cocktail while we were catching up. The espresso martini and the Pinot were both delightful. I had the Swedish meatballs and they were very good. It's listed as an appetizer but plenty for one person as an entrée. My friend had the salmon and she said it was delightful. We shared an apple pie dessert which was equally tasty. My impressions might be clouded by the smoke and sparks of the Vulcan activity at the Winter Carnival. They made a stop here later during our dinner, but from the get go it was bustling with people and LOUD. No, I mean yelling at our two friends across the table in the back dining room LOUD!!!!! The hostess was great-very attentive and on top of it. Our waitress was excellent with recommendations and just all around fun and friendly. From our table The chicken was good The ribs were not good -way over cooked The omelette was good Dessert was fine The No Regrets mocktail was a delicious kick in the pants. I stopped into Russell's on a Friday night around 6:30 PM. It was my first visit, and I was excited to check out the vibe. The atmosphere is much different from the previous restaurant at this location, and I really appreciated the change! We didn't have reservations, and it was a busy night, so we grabbed three seats at the bar. The bartenders were fantastic--attentive and friendly. I ordered a burger and fries, and it was simple yet delicious in the best way. The fries were perfectly seasoned with something more unique than just salt, so much so that ketchup wasn't even necessary--they were amazing. Honestly, I could've gone for a second order. The burger was melt-in-your-mouth good and perfectly portioned--it left me feeling satisfied without being overly full or wanting more food. I'm already looking forward to returning to try the omelette on the menu and explore some of the cocktails. Oh, and here's a bonus: if you ask for a hot towel, they'll bring you a steaming, wonderfully refreshing towelette to clean your hands--an especially thoughtful touch on a cold January day. P.s. Got seated quickly. Staff were friendly. Food took a while. It was very busy for a week night. The space was completely transformed since the previous restaurant. It was a great update and makes good use of the interior. The smash burger was really good. Comparable to Saint Dinnette's Burger. I loved the shoestring fries. I got the walleye nachos. It was good. I have never had anything like it before. The walleye was breaded and fried. You could find nuggets of it on top of the nachos. My favorite thing about this dish was the guacamole mousse. read more

Hubs has been mentioning this place since they opened. It's in the space where Tavern on Grand had been previously. The inside looks so different from the Tavern days! Drink menu was good, 8 or so cocktails to choose from and a good wine and beer list. Got a Bourbon Basil Sidecar and hubs had a Rosemary Paloma. Drinks were very good, albeit, a bit on the spendier side. Was dying to try the cacio e pepe fries. They were good, although, not sure I'd get them again, mostly because the cheese didn't melt on them very well and they were a little messy. Got the Swedish Meatballs and a side of green beans for my dinner. The meatballs were definitely sizeable for one. If you're looking for traditional Swedish Meatballs, these aren't it, but they are still delicious. Made with chicken sausage and mushroom gravy. Hubs had the spring chicken (just love that name) and I had a small bite and it was tasty. Whatever was in the puree gave it a subtle sweetness. WOW....they really did a beautiful job on the upgrades to the precious Tavern on Grand space! We loved Tavern on Grand and were sad when it closed but were excited to try Russell's. Entering it's a really wonderful space....warm and classy and perfect for a nice romantic dinner out or to celebrate a special occasion. We started with some cocktails which was delicious and well made. We had an order of the Cacio e' Pepe French fries (crispy and delicious) and the Spinach & Artichoke dip (needed some salt or seasonings). For dinner I had the Classic Steak which was magical (generous size and perfectly seasoned and prepared), the Burger (delicious), and the Roasted Chicken (moist, beautiful sauce and preparation). Everything was very tasty! The service was impeccable! Friendly, knowledgeable and experienced with timing and check backs. She was wonderful and I wish I could remember her name but it really enhanced the experience. We had a great time and highly recommend Russell's when you want a beautiful night out! read more

I went to Russell's on a Friday evening with 3 of my friends. We arrived around 7:30pm and sat at the bar for a couple minutes before being seated at a cozy booth. The ambiance of the restaurant was really cozy and welcoming. Our server was helpful in explaining the menu and was attentive. We started with the walleye nachos and some drinks. All the drinks were super tasty and I loved the nachos. We all split the cornbread which was dense and sweet. My friends ordered the caesar salad, ribs, and the burger. First time visit to Russell's. The ambiance was great. Beautiful bar and holiday decor was beautiful. Our server was fun and attentive. The disappointing experience was the food. Prices were outrageous for the size and quality of the food. Items were cold. Soup portion for the price was ridiculous and the "grilled baguette" was a quarter inch slice of a baguette with undetectable butter. Cold and dry. Food needs lots of improvement for their prices. Won't be on my list of restaurants to revisit. read more

Nice place good service. 5 of us went and had supper 01/03/2026 Total bill was $374 including tip. We had 7 cocktails. I had the Knife & Fork BBQ Ribs. Started out good on one end of the rack of ribs but by the middle of the rack it was tough and dried out - would have needed a chainsaw to get the meat off the ribs. Don't order this. The other 4 people had Crocus Hill Burger, Lobster & Shrimp Parpadelle and Walleye Ritzys. No complaints for those and they actually said very good on their orders. We also had the onion rings and spinach and artichoke dip both of which were decent especially the dip. The onion rings were tasty but not the breading was not all that crispy. read more

The restaurant is beautiful! Was excited when we entered the restaurant and looking forward to a good dinner. Ordered the Asian soba noodle salad with added chicken for protein. But when it arrived there was only the tip of a small chicken breast with 2 oz or less of chicken for protein. And paid $10 for the added chicken. A better choice would have been the omelet. If you are looking for vegan or vegetarian, this is not your place. Usually restaurants have something to offer but there is no vegan option and there is no vegetarian option with a protein. It is a carb heavy restaurant unless you order a steak. Wish there were at least 1-2 items for a healthier choice in the menu. Quite expensive considering what you got Hope they add more to the menu. What a relief! Not like an aspirin, but like a place where everyone belongs. Come as you are (soaked in bleach), but I regress, I hope you understand this place is for everyone. When I get it wrong, boy do I get it wrong. I put off coming here cause I was in such mourning over Tavern on Grand closing. So we needed a place to get dinner on a Tuesday and Basil suggested them and he's been wanting to go. I should have known something was up when I parked in back and saw the fancy door. Walking through the place was jaw dropping. Shawn was the host and seated us up front in the most comfortable chairs. Montana was our waitress giving us great suggestions. She was one of those people that cater to your every whim. As hot as it was I wanted soup and fall for butternut squash bisque every time. Served in a huge crock it's topped with seeds and sumac, amazing. We each got a delicious iced tea, they have raw sugar, yay. She was really pushing the Caesar salad. She understated how amazing that was, and I'll never come here and not get that. Basil got the 12 oz. boneless classic steak. I had a few bites, the char on it was worth it, salted just right. Nothing is really typical here. I got the Swedish meatballs cause it's listed as an appetizer and I didn't want anything massive. I'm on the fence with this one cause it's not the milk gravy one we're all used to. It had brown gravy with mushrooms. Although, good, just know that. You get 4 that aren't huge, yet not skimpy. Since everything is scratch made we had to get dessert. We shared a bread pudding with caramel and vanilla ice cream. So while dining, you're constantly looking around soaking in the beauty of the place and every detail they didn't miss. Even the bathroom. I was actually aware of being in a good mood. Was I punished for my procrastination. You bet I was. They had my favorite soup, clam chowder all through lent. More fool me. They change up the menu and this will happen again in about 2 weeks I'm told. Even though it's a lot fancier, it could still be your local pub. Spacious, with a bar, booths of various sizes, two dining rooms filled with tables and one private area. Only had appetizers at this visit, but the flavors and presentation of the cacio e pepe fries and Swedish meatballs were solid. A couple small wrinkles in front of house service, but nothing that can't be ironed out over time. We'll be back for more! read more

We had the best time at Russell's with a large group of 12. We all ordered cocktails and each of us loved them. The bread and butter plate is super fun. The Brussels were amazing. Burgers so good. The only food item that didn't get a 5star review from us was the seafood pasta dish. Everyone else was raving. Our waitress was lovely. The house manager stopped over which is always nice. Beautiful restaurant, at the entryway on a side table was greeted by a large vase of fresh, fragrant roses - wow! I took a picture to show my friends! Food was excellent, roasted veggies expertly diced with small rounds of green onions expertly browned, and the best and most tender chicken I've had in long time. We were so excited to try this, and sadly so disappointed... The staff was lovely, and the decor very nice. The food, however, seemed to have been run through a big de-flavorizing machine. The walleye was exceptionally bland; the only thing we can say in it's favor was the little side of sauce we used on the roast chicken we also bought, taste a little less boring; it was nicely roasted, but terribly plain... The ribs were enjoyed by one of us, but only because they were ribs - nothing special. One of us had a nice Caesar salad - very tiny - and the one bright spot was the squash bisque. The wine list was of the "4 times retail" style - horribly over-priced, and a detriment to ordering wine. The selection was... ok... but so high priced to be an insult - similar to Emmet's across the street. Please don't fleece us on a bottle of wine. 2+ times retail is plenty, folks. I hope they can change this up to be a much better place - it would only take a few lessons in strengthening the flavors! read more

We stopped a few days ago for an early anniversary dinner. We were seated quickly despite not having reservations. I had the burger and fries and it was great! Loved the shoestring fries. My husband, who loved Tavern on Grand, ordered the Ritzy Walleye and was so disappointed. It really had no taste. The salad it came with was good. Our service was fine but when I told my server that my husband wasn't thrilled with the walleye, he had no reaction at all. There seemed to be a lot of workers walking around but not doing much. Terrific spot on Grand Ave in St Paul. Replaced a very average previous tenant in this space and they got every detail right. Two unique spaces between the bar and restaurant, casually hip decor, great lighting and mood music, and professional, attentive staff. We had the crab bisque and steak chili. both with very high-quality ingredients and both delicious. Good, strong cocktails. It was relatively expensive, but it felt worth it. Russell's is the perfect place to gather with family and friends. We had a family gathering with 18 family members in the main dining room and the food and service was top notch! Tracy was our waitress and she was on top of it! The food was outstanding, from the BBQ ribs to the Walleye to the Steak chili and the appetizers which included wings, onion rings, and many more items on the menu, this is a MUST visit. Had my first dinner last evening at Russell's. The service was attentive and since I'm not drinking alcohol these days, I really enjoyed experiencing one of their non-alcohol drinks called Blanc de blanc from the "I'm Diving" drink menu. It is advertised as a smashburger but I'm not sure they really know what a smashburger is. It was 3/4in thick and a little dry. They need to either change the menu name or make an actual smashburger.
