I've been coming to J Sisters for a while, and I have to say they're the best I've come across in New York. I would prefer to continue bringing my business to them - friendly, professional, and exceptional at what they do. That being said, I'm very disappointed with the lack of foresight recently displayed. A deal recently went out on LivingSocial for, when all is said and done, more than 50% off their services, which are (rightfully) not cheap. Amazing! Is it available to their existing client base? Nope. So I call and ask what they're offering to their existing, loyal customers. Nothing. I understand the value of bringing in new money. But it's not rocket science that one's existing customers - their repeat business, their word-of-mouth marketing - is the most valuable asset they have. How do you write this type of review without completely exposing your personal life? Well, you don't. It's impossible. Speaking of exposing, as I was feeling a bit self-conscious laying spread eagle on the table today, I thought about how many naked crotches the woman who was waxing me had seen in her life. Quite a few I imagine. She probably thinks "seen one, seen 'em all." Anyway, back on topic. The salon. It's very inconspicuous from the outside. Just a glass door with the name on it and when you walk in, if you don't know where the heck you're going, you're going to be confused. Take the stairs, it's more welcoming than the scary, old-fashioned gated elevator. The main reception desk is on the 3rd floor (I learned this today the complicated way, so I'm looking out for you by telling you this). So, I was shown into my room. I "prepared" and waited. She came in and got right to work. Straight to the point. She was extremely professional and gentle (as gentle as you can be whilst ripping hair from the most tender area on my body...thank you). All in all, it took about 15 minutes. She cleaned me up after doing some precision work, asked me if I needed anything else (I said no thank you) and left. I didn't feel like I was doing the walk of shame as I exited the room. It was just so matter of fact. Sure, they're pricey ($67.69 was the weirdly random total...plus a 20% tip which I left), but considering the neighborhood, their reputation and the great job they do, its worth it. J-Sisters are FAMOUS for bringing the Brazilian wax to the USA and single handedly putting smiles on the faces of boyfriends up and down the island of Manhattan. These 7 Brazilian sisters have taken over 5 stories of a townhouse on 57th Street to bring waxing, threading, tinting, coloring, cuts, mani- pedi's, and pretty much any other treatment you can think of to NYC (and Miami also). Be ready to pay much dinero because the same little tough Brazilian lady who's slathering on the wax probably did it to Naomi, Tyra, Cindy, or Heidi just before you. They literally have seen one and seen them all. When I go here - I know everything will be done right and the price is worth it to ease my fears. After reading all of the positive reviews, I tried to like this establishment, I really did . . but I think it's an over-priced salon that has simply had the good fortune of getting its name out there over others. Upon check-in, I was ushered into the teeny waxing room. It seems like a bit of a factory in this place - 2 bored looking, unfriendly guys at the front desk who don't say much and kind of just want to move the assembly line along. I waited a few minutes and the aesthetician returned. She did not introduce herself. It seemed like she was in a huge rush, because she just told me how she wanted me positioned and then started right away. I'm not necessarily one for small talk while getting a wax, but some form of hello, how are you would have been nice. She had pretty good technique - it was strip wax - and it didn't hurt as much as other places I've been to. However, she didn't wear gloves and she was getting way too personal considering that fact. I mean, I won't get graphic, but this was simply uncomfortably too much contact without gloves for both her well-being and mine. I kept praying she had washed her hands in between customers. I ran home and showered as soon as it was over - that's how skeeved out from this experience I was. After she was finished, she rushed out. I never caught her name the entire time. So overall, the wax itself was fine - smooth, it lasted, no bumps or irritation and it didn't hurt any more than normal. However, the sanitary and customer service aspects really ruined the experience for me. Considering the price tag, I expected more. read more

In preparation for my vacation to the Bahamas, I made an appointment for eyelashes. Yep, that's right - fake eyelashes that cost $80! Totally worth every penny. Fatima was done in less than 15 minutes and as of right now they are still hanging on strong. It was weird because they use the same individual lashes you can buy at CVS or Duane Reade. I guess it's all in the glue they use. I don't care as long as it works! I loved not wearing any makeup! It was so cool just to put on lip gloss. What a time saver! Look - the reviews say it all. BEST bikini wax in nyc. No doubt. I used to go to Bliss *religiously* for waxing. I really enjoyed the spa like environment and everyone there was very nice. But i ALWAYS got nasty bumps and ingrown hairs that completely negated getting the wax in the first place. They would take forever to go away, no matter how many "bump be gone" products I bought. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, when a young newcomer to New York was looking for a place for her very first Brazilian wax, this was the place that she came to. Between the number of celebrities who have come through the doors over the decades (all the top models in the city as well as movie stars) and the number of magazine articles written about the J Sisters, I felt this was the place to have my Brazilian cherry popped. I was scared. I didn't know what to expect, except that movies always make Brazilians look painful. I wondered how uncomfortable it would be. And well, I needed a reassuring hand. J sisters wasn't exactly what I would suggest as a first timer, despite their apparent clientele loyalty. J sisters is like the customs experience at JFK. There's always a line of people waiting for their appointment. And because there's always such a crowd (and because you not coming back really means nothing to them), there's very little time to provide more than a push in the general direction of the room. I do remember shyly telling my waxer that it was my first time and in a very typical New York moment, she gave me an assessing up and down look and said "Nothing to worry about, angel!!" I don't think it was a horrible first time. I certainly didn't cry out and I don't remember anything particular that stood out from that experience(really makes you wonder whether I'm reviewing a waxing place or something else, doesn't it?). But I do know that I never went back to J Sisters. There are much better places for a brazilian wax and J sisters while commending plenty of magazine article real estate is expensive enough (well over $50 when I first went) and so unspectacular in any way that i don't regret never returning. The price is the same as anywhere else and totally worth it. Today I went to Completely Bare because I got a coupon for a cheap Brazillian there and it was such a difference. After Completely Bare I realize that I would never go anywhere else but J Sisters from now on. I do not however like that they dip the same stick back into the wax over and over again. Another year, another review. I've been going to JP for just over a year now, and she rocks. I first went to Lele, then Joyce and since Joyce is one of the sisters and difficult to get an appointment with I've been going to JP. I must say that she still is AMAZING. I am seriously in and out in under 15 minutes...and she doesn't miss a spot. Not to mention she is friendly and actually remembers her customers! Getting waxed will never be a pleasant experience, but at least she makes it bearable, quick and neat. I would never trust anyone else with my v. I have been going here for almost 7 years and yet have only had one service - the (in)famous Brazilian. It's pricey (just under $70) and worth every penny. I've tried other places as recommended by friends that were "just as good" or "nearly as good, but half the price" but I keep returning here. Here's the thing. I don't like having my hand held, I don't like build-up to the event, I don't need anyone soothing me letting me know that it'll be over soon and it's not surgery. But, secretly, I do appreciate kindness with solid professionalism and know-how, and that is what I got from Lulu at the J. Sisters Salon. She had a lovely bedside manner, welcomed me into the little room, and with a bright smile said "you know what to do; I'll be back in just a minute with the wax." I need someone who'll be matter-of-fact, very knowledgeable, and NOT SHY. Bliss Spas may give you the lit candle, lemon water, soft robe, disposable paper bikini action along with the soft sing-song voice you usually save to coax your five-year old into the bath, but they don't GET UP IN THERE. Some of their technicians actually seem scared. Lulu (and the other ladies, from what I hear), are efficient, distract you when needed (the aforementioned GET UP IN THERE moment), give recommendations for about how frequently you should address your lady-parts based on the texture of your hair, and are happy to answer questions. They're also going to go with your general mien - if you tend towards quiet, as I did at first, they'll go with it. If you get chatty, so will they. Lulu and I chatted comfortably after she finished the part I dislike the most (the Get Up In There area), and the whole procedure went swimmingly. The most sensitive area stung for a minute or two afterwards and subsided. I checked myself out and saw that I was good to go; no need to avoid the gym or yoga, etc. - to wit, I've never really had a problem with this, so if you have sensitive skin, keep in mind you may have to take extra steps. Saw all the negative reviews, and I get it, but I don't. Truth of it is this: you're hiring a technician to forcibly remove hair from your most important parts with hot wax, and it's going to sting. Speak up, ask questions, and if you'd like them to use different products from what they provide, ask, and they're happy to adjust to you. You can't be a fading flower when it comes to this. I thought Lulu was fabulous, and I'm glad to have a new regular place to go where they minimize the pain to a brief sting, their products for post-waxing do the trick, they're happy to help you feel sexy and are frank about sending you off cheerily, sending their regards to your husband/lover/next-person-to-see-your-grooming-habits ... :) read more

I lived in Brasil and that is where I was introduced to Brasilian waxes--which I found I could not live without! Upon my return to the midwest, I was never been able to find very good Brasilian waxers. That is, until now! This was on my list of things to do when I decided to come to the city and I was not disappointed. A Brasilian is $75, which some may think is expensive, but I am used to paying $70 for a bad wax, so I think it is a great deal. They do Brasilians perfectly: quickly, efficiently and painlessly. I recommend JP who was very gracious and encouraged me to speak in Portuguese with her. She is such a doll! As long as I am in the city, I will never go anywhere else. I had my first Brazilian at J. Sisters just over a year ago after having it recommended by a co-worker. The first time was painful (as I think is to be expected when you have sensitive skin like I do), but the second time was as close to painless as I think you can get when someone is ripping hot wax off your hoo-ha. I think some people might think the price is a little expensive in comparison to some other places in NYC but I think it's well worth paying it to have the assurance that you're getting the best service when it comes to waxing it all off down there. I had both experiences with Giselle. I think the best adjective I can use to describe her is motherly. I felt very well taken care of by her. She also gave me good advice about what to do to decrease the pain after my first wax and help my skin soothe. She was very fast (10-15 mins), efficient and thorough. Her technique is the best I have encountered thus far. The combination of holding the skin taut and pressing on certain parts of the labia helped immensely to decrease the pain when she tore off the strips. She didn't do any tweezing which I think I was grateful for. Everything about the experience was professional, efficient, and as pleasant as could be under the circumstances. I just moved to San Francisco and got my first brazilian here and let me just say that I already miss you J. Sisters and I can't wait to go back to New York and book my next appointment! Definitely do not go here for a pedicure. Let me recap my pedi experience: - Walked in, sat in an office-type swivel chair -Soaked my feet in a plastic tub with weak massage bubbles -Pedicurist sat directly across from me on the same level, so it felt a bit awkward having my foot up on her knee and I was wearing a dress. -Pedicure took over an hour. And it cost like $85, not incl. tip. Takeaways: J. Sisters is suppose to be known for their deep cleaning of toes when it comes to the pedicure. Yeah the lady took her sweet ass time cleaning my feet but if you're used to the comforts of relaxing in a massage chair and soaking in your feet in a nice bubbly machine (their plastic soaking tubs remind of the ones you can buy yourself and take home), and don't wanna pay a ridiculous amount of money, stick to the Asian places elsewhere in the city! For that much money I expected a little bit more ambience/comfort! read more

This is the ultimate waxing experience! The waxing salon is on the top floor and the elevator is beyond slow, so if you're in decent shape take the winding staircase all the way to the top. I like the authenticity of all technicians being from Brazil. Joyce is the bomb!! She took the time to explain the process and set my expectations on how long my Brazilian would last, maintenance, and so on. She moved quickly, waxing each section thoroughly before moving on to the next. It was painful, but not as grueling as local nail salon waxes. She got every last hair. The price seemed outrageous, but then I broke it down. When you consider that most salons include only the front and back as a full Brazilian, and charge $35 on the low end, upwards of $60+. Both lower and upper stomach, and thighs, are all additional charges. J Sisters charges $75 to wax ALL of this, making you bikini-ready when you walk out the door! I had a Brazilian bikini wax with Seyah (I am not sure if that is how you spell her name, but it is pronounced "Say-ah") and it was fantastic! Well...as fantastic as a wax can be at least. This was my third time ever getting a Brazilian and I have very sensitive skin, but the special honey wax they used was not intense and this was probably the least painful wax I've had. Seyah was very gentle and you can tell a total professional! She has a special technique where basically she starts on the outside and works her way into the middle so it is less painful. The woman who checked me in at the front was also incredibly friendly and accommodating, it was pretty hot outside and I got hot during the wax so she gave me a huge glass of ice water with lemon after :) The only negative feedback I had was that you obviously get a private room but the walls do not go up to the ceiling so other customers waiting and people getting their hair done might be able to hear you talking. This didn't bother me though as I am not very self-conscious about that kind of stuff, and after all everyone is also there to get waxed! I was originally referred to them by a great day spa in Westchester. I live (east village) and work downtown (soho) but glad I made the trip uptown! So worth it. read more

Of those I saw, Jane(a) was excellent and she is one of the seven J sisters, but returned to Brazil, Emily is good and Paula who I met for the first time yesterday is excellent. But the place is run with a factory like efficiency and could feel cold at times ( ahem front desk staff) but the salon was impeccably decorated. My first time getting waxed, I went here based on the reviews. It was not as painful as I expected (except doing the center, that was horrible!) and made me smoother than I could have imagined. Pleasant staff. Private rooms. My waxer (her name escapes me) talked me through the process making me feel very comfortable. A bit pricey but worth it. Will be coming back. One thing though, after one week hair started growing back. Perhaps not the fault of the technician but rather my hair growth speed. I would never go elsewhere after having 3 or 4 other trials and cringing that I tried to skimp on paying the J Sisters $67.70 or whatever it's up to now. They are quick, clean and professional. I thought I knew what a good bikini wax was, I did not. Zero ingrowns, a reasonable amount of pain, not one hair left, and a thorough and quick job. I go to Giselle who does fantastic quality work, and makes me feel comfortable during one of the most uncomfortable things one can do. I don't think it's overpriced considering the work. For 10 extra dollars than other reputable places, I will continue to go to Jsisters and get a better wax than anywhere else. I've also had my eyebrows done by Maya, who does a great job. I will say the eyebrow waxing is overpriced- but not because the quality is not worth it- just because $50 for an eyebrow wax is just out of my budget. However, leading up to my wedding Maya made my eyebrows look better than ever before. I've been getting waxed since 18, I've been hurt, burned, bleeding, and left with needing to have ingrowns removed by a dr. because some people (yes Bliss to be exact) don't know the correct angles/ ways to get rid of pesky ingrowns. I moved to NYC in 2007 from Boston where I frequented G Spa for my Brazilians, which was the first place I ever had one. G Spa set the bar for me so I went searching on where to go when I moved to NYC. Despite the price, I decided on J Sister based on the other Yelp reviews I had read and from beauty magazines. I had heard good things about Joyce so I always request her when I go. Only once was I placed with someone else because she called in sick, but the replacement was just ok - it was the only time I had bleeding after a Brazilian so I still prefer Joyce though. Overall, I really like the no-nonsense manner and how quick it is. They always try to get you to buy the after-cream and after about 4 waxes I finally gave in and got it. It really does last a long time and a little goes a long way so it was worth the investment. I still think that J Sister is very expensive, but hubby likes it and I'm scared to try anyone else so I will keep going. read more

I went in for the Spa Week promotion to get a wash, cut, and dry for $50 and was given Maria. I had great service from start to finish. She completely listened to what I didn't like about my last cut from another salon and what I wanted out of my cut from her. She was quick, very confident, and fun to chat with- she was also very honest about other services that I would benefit from there and what I could skip. I give Maria 5 stars! The salon itself was nice- I was surprised at how small it was though. I don't know that it's a place that should be demanding $125 for just a cut, but after my terrible experience at a previous salon and with how great Maria did my hair, I probably will be going back. read more

This is the 3rd time I get a Brazilian wax but my first time here and I made the appointment with Ceia based on the reviews here. Let me just say "Wow, ouch, that quick and thank you!" From the minute I met her to the end, Ceia was very professional, didn't say much other than what shape I wanted and zeroed in at the task. I'm so grateful she did because no matter what wax type is used, waxing is never pain free! Her quick apply-and-pull technique is what really helped me through the process ... no time for hand holding or contemplating on the pain ... she moved in like a commando ... do the job stealthily, quick and out. The pain came after the pull but by that time she was already applying the next strip of wax. In 15 mins she was done waxing and 5 mins for manicuring the lawn and cleanup. Ive been here three times..and the first two times were great with a girl whose name I cannot remember and regret I did not get her the third time. Third time... :( I was with a woman who was VERY experienced, I knew she was by the way she spoke of the hair growth and her method of waxing. SOMETIMES over-cocky experience...doesnt allow you to concentrate fully at the task at hand. My nani. She...was very quick as the other girl was, told me she 'normally charged' to leave hair on..a strip almost but i wanted the ends cut *personal preference* so ty! thank you I was not charged for a 'design', however.. 1.) infection.. 2.) told her the wax was too hot, please cool down...was burned. actually 5 days later, went to the doctor to be screened because of the infection and because of the burn...the doctor said 'well you came in a little late, the flesh is now healing itself' THE FLESH...IS NOW...HEALING...ITSELF? sigh... 3.) Not only infection and burn, but a tear...near the back girls... I was f-ed up. It did not feel good. I knew something was wrong when I was still burning later that night. The other two times I've patroned here, no heavy burning a few hours later, could be active even! Other brazilian waxes had never left me feeling this way... sigh. Maybe she was ready to leave for the night or maybe it was just the woman or whatever it was...it did scare me...I want to go back for the efficiency, but obviously worried. ________________ Update 1 month later (yes I went back - im crazy, but the original girl was great...saw her again) Go see JP(my original girl), tell her Kristina sent you..
