First of all, the food at J Sushi is amazing. Highly recommend. This is a cautionary tale about a Grubhub markup that is not fair to this local business at all. I ordered a decent meal tonight that came to a total of $101.00 with no fees through Amazon prime and a driver tip of 18%. I got my order, which was smaller than expected, with a receipt stapled to the bag for a total of $63.00. Apparently the markups on the GrubHub menu site are incredibly inflated, which means that, despite my Amazon "perks", this local restaurant got cheated out of $40.00. This is 100% not J Sushi's fault, it is GrubHub's. Buyer beware. read more

If I could give J Sushi in Denton more than 5 stars, I would. We rolled in deep--with a whole crew of adults and kids (aka chaos on legs)--and they didn't just handle it, they owned it. The food? Phenomenal. Every roll was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully put together. Even my picky eaters left with new favorites, and that alone deserves a standing ovation. But the real showstopper? Way too much money for the quality that you get in return. Please look at the pictures because you'll see clearly that there's salmon is not fresh. You can see the two different colors of the bright orange and the brown. Also if you're getting a sushi that has sauce on it make sure to get a separate container. We were seated right away, and they took our drink order and asked if we wanted to order appetizers. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had Stuffed Avocado with crabmeat, Deep Fried Stuffed Mushrooms with crabmeat and Deep Fried. Shrimp Tempura Lightly battered and deep fried. Creamy Shrimp - Shrimp and cream cheese deep-fried in wonton Stuffed Mushroom - Deep-fried mushroom stuffed with crabmeat, topped with scallion, tobiko, and special sauce. The service was nice. She was very friendly and seated us right away. We got seated at a booth and it was wobbly and the cushions were very uneven. The server asked for our drink orders right away which was nice. We each ordered sashi bento, chicken teriyaki bento, don katsu bento, seafood fried rice and bulgogi entree. The bento boxes on the menu only showed under the lunch section but you can still order it for dinner with an up charge of $4. Food came within a good time but miso soup was served first. The miso was pretty salty which was still edible but that first sip gave me a shock. Don katsu bento: so each bento comes with soup, salad, fried tempura, California roll and fried gyoza. The style of fried tempura is different from what I am used to. It was thinly sliced carrot onion and zucchini with one shrimp tempura. It's a bit on the greasier side but still crunchy. The gyoza is just your typical fried gyoza that you could buy from the frozen section in your grocery store. Salad had a nice tangy dressing. The katsu was very disappointing as it was super thin and tasted like a chicken nugget. The California roll was okay but nothing to rave about. Honestly the bento wasn't worth the price. Chicken teriyaki bento: the teriyaki is okay nothing special. Sashimi bento: the sashimi was okay. Seafood fried rice: it was pretty tasty I couldn't complain. Bulgogi entree: for the price more meat could've been added. I know it's thinly sliced beef but it seemed more like chopped meat very crumbly. Overall the service is great but the food lacked. I love this sushi place! It's my go to spot & most of the time it's my craving spot. I've been eating here with my family for around three years. It is so delicious, the Japanese food in Denton in our personal opinion. I wasn't sure there would be good sushi options in Denton but was pleasantly surprised with this find. At first, I was leery of the place because a few people came in with no mask (smh, Texans) and wasn't sure if people were going to be seated too closely. Well, let me confirm for those who are like me and want to avoid catching covid, that they spaced parties appropriately and I felt completely comfortable. I sat along the wall and they kept a table between each party. Since I was dining alone, I skipped an appetizer and went with my main meal along with sake. I opted for the unfiltered white peach sake. It was pretty good and not overally sweet. The Orange Blossom and Baja rolls were my selections for dinner. Both were very good! The baja was light and just felt fresh. I loved it. I love salmon so I knew I'd like the orange blossom. The service was also very good. Although, it was busy, I never wanted for anything. Let me start with saying I'm from Hawai'i. I've been in Texas 6 months and have been hunting for poke and everything I've had is not only terrible, but also not traditional poke. It's all Americanized salad with a tiny bit of raw fish. Here we actually have a fairly accurate poke bowl. I'm not a huge fan of the dressing they used, I would have preferred shoyu or spicy [mayo] but it was not bad. The ahi (tuna) tasted kinda "fishy" which it's not supposed to but it's not too bad. The ahi is actually pretty soft, I'm not sure if it's previously frozen or not - if it's not then that would explain the fishy taste, probably due to being caught 24-48+ hours ago but again not bad. If you make this with spicy mayo it would probably mask it. Seaweed salad, and cucumbers were good. I'm glad it came with furikake. Best of all that's real crab meat. We don't even get that in Hawai'i. It's good. Not anywhere close to the best poke bowl I've had, but so far it's the best in Texas. I'll probably call and request if they could accommodate a shoyu based sauce next time instead and it'll probably be a lot better. Didn't get chopsticks though, I guess my name sounds too white LOL read more

Seafood was wonderful but my order was wrong. I went in with my dad because I had a craving for sushi. I ordered a siesta key roll and a sunset roll. However, I received a siesta key roll and the avocado lover roll. This wouldn't be such a big deal but I'm not a fan of raw sushi and the avocado roll has raw salmon in it, it's a texture thing for me. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize this until I ate half the roll. The texture of the raw fish hit my tongue and I immediately spit it out. At this point, I felt like I couldn't argue with the roll because I already ate half of it. The siesta roll on the other hand, heavenly. It was deliciously crafted and absolutely delicious. The staff quickly cleaned the table when I stopped eating then the check came out. Here is the other issue, we were charged for the siesta and sunset roll when I didn't receive the sunset. There is a price difference between the two rolls, the sunset costing more than the avocado. Again, didn't feel like I could fight it since my plate was already cleared away. It was only a few dollars difference which is why I only subtracted one star because otherwise, everything else was wonderful. The atmosphere was great, the siesta key roll incredible! My dad even loved the Spicy Tuna nachos he received saying the were absolutely delicious! I'll be going back, I'll just keep a better eye on the rolls I receive next time. read more

We came in for dinner last night and had a great experience, other customers/tables around us seemed enjoying their meals as well. Okay, I'm in love with this place. I'm pretty much a weekly customer and come during my lunch break from school. Bento Boxes: SCORE, affordable and super filling with great sides, I've had the bulgogi, pork Katsudon, and chicken teriyaki, all bento boxes come with two dumplings, 4 pieces of California roll, Japanese salad, and tempura (sliced up sweet potato, onion, and 1 shrimp). I really like their tempura batter and when I don't order the bento box I like to order the assorted tempura basket. The only thing for me that they are missing is rice, the bento boxes don't come with rice, which is kinda strange cause it's weird not eating rice with chicken teriyaki, bulgogi, Katsudon... Favorite roll: Avocado lover, don't be deceived by the name but the roll not only has avocado but SALMON, there is avocado inside the roll and on top and salmon in the middle and they top it off with a soy sauce glaze, it's amazing and my go to. Service: I know a lot of the old reviews in 2013 say that service is bad and their drinks are never refilled but I've been here a ton of times and service has always been great. The waitresses always fill my drink (sometimes up to 3 times in one meal cause I'm thirsty) and never leave me hanging. Sushi: salmon and super white tuna (kinda expensive, but really yummy). Honestly the keeping me from giving them 5 stars is the fact that they don't include rice with their bento boxes, and if you want to order rice it's $2.00 a bowl.
