My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at this restaurant. We were having lunch before a relative's graduation and stumbled upon J Sushi. Thinking we would just grab a couple of quick pieces of sushi before the ceremony, we ended up with 4 rolls and stuffed ourselves. The food came out quick and was delicious. The food here is good, but if you are looking for service with a smile or service at all, you may want to try another place. The hostess leads you to a table where she drops the menus and keeps walking to visit with the employees preparing food. When the drink order is served, it arrives with the same "fly-by" speed and silent delivery which lead you to the table in the first place. The food is delivered quickly and meets all expectations. DO NOT EAT HERE! THE STAFF DOES NOT CARE THEY SERVE BAD FISH! When we first entered we almost left because the floor was so dirty. It was sticky in spots and slippery at our table. This was scary because my wife thought she would fall. We ordered the Ahn Tower and Love roll. When the tower was brought to our table it did not look like any Ahn Towers I had eaten there before. It was not even a tower, it was flat. The fish in the Love Roll was not fresh. It was fishy smelling and fishy tasting. My wife could not eat it. Surely the 'cook' could tell the fish was not fresh for it smelled so much. The food left me with a case of diarrhea that lasted over 24 hours. I had to leave work because of the diarrhea. My wife came down with a case of a severe rash all over her body. The rash was red, hurt all over, itched like crazy, and she experienced swelling in all her joints. Her condition was so bad I had to take her to the doctor. Her physician told her the rash was a case of severe reaction to bad fish. In fact the doctor stated she had not ever seen such a bad reaction. read more

I actually have visited this sushi place pretty frequently. Typically things are okay - there have been a couple touch and go moments from the service (one time we were there for over an hour and only saw our server twice) and once and awhile from the presentation of the food but overall this is a pretty safe sushi place to visit. There are quite a few of these shopping strip sushi places here in Denton, and this is the best one we have tried so far. The fish was cut reasonably thick, rather than the deli slices you get at some of the other places. Everything - fish and vegetables - was very fresh. The rolls had great, inventive flavor. We ordered food to go. As soon as we opened it, the tuna smelled fishy. I did not try it because it didn't seem fresh, but my husband did, and had to spit it out. We ordered 4 rolls: the California roll was ok, but the other three had tuna, which was brown instead of red, and NOT fresh. The chicken fried rice was edible, but rice was soggy and chicken dry - tasted like it came from a store-bought package. Will not eat here again. Terrible experience. read more

My boyfriend and I have been to J sushi on a variety of ocassions, even the frist time when it opened. I believe that the sushi and fish quality is very good. I really enjoyed the philedelphia roll, tempura roll, and thier caterpillar roll, excellent ! Although, the service I believe probably needs a little work because i have been in a few times when they always forget the order or just forget all together. I eat at J Sushi quite often. My favorite dish is Chirashi. If I have a roll it is either the Sharon Roll, Lion King Roll, or the Cherry Blossom roll. The owner is a UNT graduate and hires a lot of interns from the Restaurant Management program there. read more

Ok so I'm not a big Sushi eater and it may be good here. But if you're going to serve Hibachi in your Sushi Restaurant, at least know how to cook Hibachi. The fried rice had no flavor at all, like it had been made days before. I had the Combo (Beef, Chicken and Shrimp) Hibachi. The shrimp tasted like it was freezer burned and...well the others were tasteless. They had put some kind of sauce on it that was way too sweet and just made it that much more obvious that they had not cooked this when we ordered it and besides the fact that it only took like 15 minutes to bring our food. There is no way you can cook Hibachi for 3 people in 15 minutes. Now for the final kick in the pants the bill was $70. Love this place. If I am ever around the Denton area and in the mood for sushi, I always come here. Customer service has also been great every time we have come here. I went over while my boyfriend was waiting on his haircut to get lunch, he wasn't hungry and I decided a few rolls would be a good light lunch. As soon as I walked in, the host let me know abruptly that they would be closing soon to get ready for dinner. It was approximately an hour before their lunch serving time was over, and I was by myself. I didn't know what he thought I was ordering, but he was pretty rude to a customer. While I ate my 12 salmon rolls at the bar, I was never offered a refill for my drink and I had to find my server to pay my bill. The first and only time I'll ever go to this place. read more

I ordered 3 very different rolls... all 3 tasted bland, probably because there was nearly no fish in them... all rice, where's the fish?!?!? They are not cheap either... We have been here several times and are very impressed. After living on the CA coast, we were a little nervous to try sushi in Denton. J Sushi does a great job. Fish is top notch and the variety of rolls is great. The spicy tuna is actually spicy for once...and very good!! The staff is very friendly and the service is great. We have brought out-of-town guests here and they have been equally impressed. Two thumbs up!! read more

The only reason in giving two stars instead of one is because the food was good. My biggest complaint is the wait staff. They were unfriendly (except for one that brought us our to-go box as we were leaving). Our glasses went empty, we had to flag them down to place an order, and they failed to tell us the sushi bar and kitchen were closing until we tried to place our to-go part of the order. It's not as if they did not know we were planning to place an order. We asked for the menu and sushi list to place our to-go order maybe 5 min before we asked to order. Went in the other night for sushi, we were seated on a slower night after about 5 mins of waiting, and after that we were seated for over 10 minutes waiting for instructions on how to order. We left very soon after that, from the horrible service, as we got up we were never approached to recover their business . 30 mins later we realized my friend left her phone, so we went back to get it. The phone was gone, but the employees were very suspicious. We ended up calling the cops and the manager told us he was sorry but his employee had the phone the whole time. The whole situation wasn't taken care of in a unprofessional way. This is a horribly owned and ran business, this was our first experience, and will never be back even after being given a gift card from the manager. This place is horrible. read more

Best sushi ever! I was really surprised by this place. I didn't expect to find such good sushi and really fresh seafood in Texas. I moved here from the San Francisco Bay Area and figured I'd have to give up good seafood and defiantly sushi. I actually think this was the best sushi I have had! We got the spider roll, Louisiana roll and love roll. All were great. Oh and also the service was really good, the food came fast, the waiter checked back with us like four times and they gave us a free extra Louisiana roll because the first one they made with shrimp instead of crawfish. What happened here? Before eating at J sushi today, I had eaten there a few times in the last year. The last time was in January 2014. Something must have happened since then. I am disappointed. The only constant appears to be the sushi chefs, other than that everything else seems to have gone downhill. The sushi/sashimi portions are less than half of what they used to be for the same price. Service was a little bit slow but not terrible. I just wonder why someone took a place that was pretty good (used to be maybe an 8.5/10) and turned it into a 2/10. I won't be back. This place was ok. It wasn't the best sushi I've ever had but it wasn't terrible either. Some of the rolls were kinda bland like the Cherry Blossom and White Dragon. The Crazy Monkey was good but the DBCK was really good, and the rolls were not very well made. The menu to order rolls was also difficult to read and use because the rolls were not in alphabetical order. The service was also sub par. My husband and I waited for 15 min just for the waitress to come and ask what we would like to drink and the restaurant was empty. The hostess was also not very friendly. This is hands-down my favorite sushi spot in Denton. If you're smart about it you can eat REALLY affordably too...their portions are more than fair. And unlike some other sushi places in the area that just give you a tiny sliver of meat swimming in way-too-much rice, this place really loads up the fish and the flavor so the sushi pieces are a serious mouthful. You don't have to choose between quantity and quality here! I have yet to find something on the menu I don't like. If you're around during lunch hours try the Bento Box. You can't beat the price ($10 for more food than you can eat) and of all the Bento Box options I like Chicken Katsu the best. It's breaded but not greasy, it's a good-sized portion, and it's drizzled with an awesome sauce. These guys really know what they're doing. read more
