This restaurant put me through college. I worked here on and off for three years and it was such an amazing experience. I learned so much about sushi but even more I learned more about the food they create. The owner is amazing, kind and above all truly cares for the food he puts out and the customers he serves. I have tried everything on the menu but my favorites are the oven baked rolls like the volcano, golden bridge and lion king roll. You can't go wrong with any of the rolls here. They almost always come with sauce... so if you don't like that... you can always order the sauce on the side instead. You should at least give it a try though because all of their sauces are homemade, fresh and super tasty. My other top recommendations are their vegetarian rolls especially their vegetable tempera roll. I've tried to find another place that comes close to how sushi cafe does their vegetarian rolls, but have never found a close match. I love the decor and vibe of this location as well. My first time here. Ordered take-out. I came in at 7:43 not knowing that the sushi bento was a dish only served until 2pm. The server informed me on the time but the owner (Max) was just on the opposite side of the counter and immediately came over to let the server know that he(Max) will be willing to make this dish for me. I also ordered the 5 pc. Takoyaki with no idea what it was, but was not disappointed in the flavor. The shrimp fried rice? I don't know where to start. It's just so flavorful. The sesame sauce on top made this my favorite fried rice to date. The atmosphere is very calming. This place is a 10/10. I am excited to come back for more and try more things on the menu. read more

Our absolute go-to for Denton sushi! Every time we order something new, I'm unsure about the sauce they put on the roll, and I'm always delighted! Last Vegas roll, Crystal roll, and avocado roll are our favorites but we've never had anything there we didn't enjoy. It's also a great place to take people who are new to sushi, or who don't love it. They have lots of sushi options with fried proteins, plus fried rice and noodle dishes. We usually get it to go or delivered, so I'm not an expert on their dine-in service, I can say they've never gotten an order wrong or forgotten anything! Sushi Cafe offers an abundance of sushi rolls, poke bowls, ramen, udon, and others. What I love about this place is that they offer a huge variety of vegetarian options- most sushi places only offer a couple, but this place has a lot!! I was craving a hot bowl of noodle soup and was looking to get the tofu udon, but I went with a build my own poke bowl instead. Honestly though, I do wish I had gone with the tofu udon. With the poke bowl, we got to choose out choice of rice, two proteins, four toppings (some cost extra), and two sauces. I went with a vegetarian option and got fried tofu as the protein. While the poke bowl had great flavor and was actually quite delicious, I found the portion to be way too small for the price- $14. I left actually still feeling hungry, but I didn't want to spend more money. Most poke places offer a decent sized bowl for about $8-$9, so $14 for a smaller portion is definitely on the pricy range. I hope to come back to try their other items- especially the tofu udon or the cheese ramen. read more

I had previously avoided trying this place due to a low Yelp rating. I almost tried them several times, but would get nervous and back out. After 3 exhausting days of travelling, we got back in town Monday night and were starving. I saw them on UberEats and did a comparison with Yelp to see that their rating had raised quite a bit since I last checked. This made me feel better and I proceeded to place an order. Considering the amount of food and the time of day, I can't really be surprised by the delivery time. The food however, was a mixed bag. I really, really, really wanted some sushi and was bummed by what we got. I ordered the salmon and the red snapper, $3.99 each. Since this was the entire reason we chose to order from this place at all, I had an expectation of at least average. Unfortunately, this expectation was not met. The salmon was of poor quality, VERY stringy and one of the pieces was discolored. The first bite of red snapper was actually pretty good, but the rest of the first piece and half of the second piece were still frozen! As in, they was hard, extremely cold and there were still ice crystals on one side which should have been seen when slicing and it felt like it was intentionally hidden from me. I would much rather a place tell me they don't have it ready then just try to pawn off unthawed sushi on me, that made me mad and is an indicator of how much they care about their customers. This is what I was looking forward to and the disappointment ran deep. My husband ordered the beef and veggie fried rice for $11.99. It looked really unappetizing, we didn't expect it to be so dark and drowned in soy. I chose not to try it and my husband reported it was extremely salty. The portion was a bit small for the price as well. I ordered the donkatsu entrée with steamed rice and sauce on the side for $10.99. It came with a salad and I can say that the portion was fair for the price point. The salad was decent and the rice was as expected. The donkatsu was pretty good in taste and cook. My only issue with this dish is that my instructions were ignored and they left the sauce on there. This wasn't an issue for the top few, but the bottom layer was drowning in sauce and was soggy and falling apart when I got to it. More than half the donkatsu became inedible and wasted as a result. This was why I requested the sauce on the side, so I would get the entire meal in edible form and then apply the sauce as I was eating it. There were some highlights to our meal though! We also ordered the beef gyoza for $5.99, the chicken egg roll for $4.99 and the green tea ice cream for $4.99. Though the appetizers were a little pricey for the portion size, they were very good. The beef dumpling was tasty and the egg roll was even better with a great flavor and perfect texture! I would gladly order both of those again. The best part of the meal was the green tea ice cream!! It was amazing!! Both the texture and taste was outstanding and I would consider going here just to order more ice cream! You must try if you decide to eat from here. Okay, so the overall rating was a bit tough to decide. I really try to be fair to restaurants as I know a lot of factors are in play, and it's not easy work. When food is a mixed bag, sometimes it's still worth a 3 star rating. However, in this case, I felt a 3 star rating would be unfair to other yelpers and wasn't justified based on the underlying issues with this meal. First, most of the items were overpriced for the quality we received. That's important to a lot of people and shouldn't be ignored. Second, a place that will ignore instructions and choose to give a customer a poor quality item, has a serious issue in how they view both their business and their customers. I eat sushi often, at least once a week, and it's not unusual to be told an item is not available that day whether it be unavailable from the vendor, still frozen or not up to the standards of the chef. This place needs to consider adapting a similar policy. To ignore my instructions means you don't pay attention to your customers. To give me fish that is still frozen, stringy and discolored means you don't value your customers or your reputation. I'm really glad that some other yelpers had better experiences than the original reviews. However, this place still has a lot of work to do. I would like to give a higher rating for the items we enjoyed, but a bulk of the price was for items we didn't enjoy- the sushi and entrées. A 2 star rating ("Meh. I've experienced better.") is actually an accurate rating for this experience. If they continue to improve and get good reviews, I will try them again in the future, but spend significantly less money with them until I see the improvement for myself. Sushi is in your restaurant's name. Please show more respect for your customers by only serving items you are willing to stand behind. read more

The single wait staff came over after a while to take drink orders. And, promptly forgot the one beer ordered. We reminded him, which is fine, maybe he was having a bad day. We ordered our meals. Unimpressed with the sushi as I was, I ordered tempura udon. The order came out staggered. Okayyyyy, so now there were 3 tables to wait on.... maybe that's it. My udon was okay and spicy as requested. However, the tempura was all overcooked. After reading on the menu "eaten food will not be comped" I decided to eat it anyway until I came to the onion ring. It was burnt so bad it was black. I sent it back, asking only for a single onion ring to replace the unedible one. I was excited to see it coming back to the table, a large onion ring. One bite and... it was a perfectly fried onion skin. Yeah. You know. The completely unedible part of an onion beside its root. The place was not busy. Maybe they're spoiled because UNT is right across the street and other people won't complain. I work hard for my money though so I expect what I pay for. However, never again. The California roll was good, but it did come with a surprise sweet sauce I did not ask for. Though it was okay, and I ate and enjoyed it as a little change up, I definitely would not normally want it. So I'd definitely recommend if you want your rolls without sauce to ask! This review is for a meal I had tonight consisting of the Butterfly Roll, a California Roll, and a Miso Soup. Let's start with the Butterfly roll. Eel and tuna atop a shrimp tempura roll. It was hard to look at, and even harder to eat. When I first saw the roll I thought I had gotten the wrong one, it was mostly tuna with only 2 pieces containing any eel at all. I start from the end with the tuna, everything's good until I hit the piece of eel...it was terrible. Not the taste, the eel was amazing, but the way it was "filleted" was absolutely unacceptable, it felt like the person who was preparing it just took off the head and sliced it up. Both of the only pieces there were had at least 6 bones in them, each, which is just absurd. Eel takes a lot of experience and effort to prepare, so if you don't have an experienced chef, don't use experienced ingredients. The second was the California roll. Not much here, but it just tastes cheap. If you're going to charge me $8+, then cook the rice and don't smother it in a bunch of sauce. The miso soup is last, oh my gosh it was bad. I thought I was drinking soy sauce, there must have been 5x my daily salt intake in a sip of that. You gotta get that ratio right. No. Don't go here. I would recommend trying other places first. read more

The rice in the sushi was soggy, the raman noodles that was almost 10 bucks look like it actually came from the raman fast noodle pack that costs a few cents. I'd heard mixed reviews of this place but after a second visit, I can say that it's exceeded my expectations! While I haven't tried a wide variety of things on the (huge) menu, primarily just their rolls and mochi, I was pretty satisfied. I definitely recommend the Uncommon Grounds roll if you're a salmon lover! It's really, really good. Honestly wasn't super thrilled with the double spicy roll because it just has a ton of sriracha on it, and I was hoping for some jalapeños or whatever else but I didn't really read the description so that's kind of on me. Their coffee mochi ice cream is good, too. It's just a good reliable sushi joint for ordering rolls, and the happy hour prices are nice. However, the menu is a little deceptive because I ordered a rainbow roll and California roll and online it has no mention of any sauces but, there's a sweet sauce and eel sauce on both. If I would've known it was on there I probably wouldn't have ordered it as the sweet sauce is too much for me. If it wasn't on there the food is actually very good and the service again is very nice.
