Service absolutely sucked!! Mathieu was our waiter & we were a table of 4 adults. Took him 15 minutes after we were seated at 8:32 on a Wednesday night just to approach the table for the first time, another 15 minutes to bring 3 glasses of water & a pop. Since it took that long to get that far, I insisted he take our order then. Wait for food wasn't horrible but we never saw Mathieu again until he dropped the bill off. Others delivered the food & no one checked to see if everything was ok. Our bill was over $250 & it was difficult for me to not leave a tip but I couldn't justify the service to leave anything. I get that serving is a tough job (I've done it myself) especially when it's busy but that wasn't the case. Surely someone else could have helped out if needed. I'm not a huge Jack Astor's fan to start with but this just sealed the deal for me yet again not to return. I don't usually complain unless it's really bad & seldom never tip but that happened tonight. read more

We just finished up our Christmas get together, and we held it at Jack Astor's Dartmouth Crossing. I was impressed and that's not easy. The food is real food as in not out of a box. I had the best burger I have had in years. The service was perfect, the staff know what they are doing. Even the music playing, it wasn't so loud that you couldn't hear each other talking. A mouse made its way (not scurried) across the aisle (in the middle of the day!). I made eye contact with a woman at another table and incredulously we both pointed and nodded at the mouse. Our dessert was comped, because apparently this is a thing they're actively trying to resolve. I went here today for lunch. The service was mediocre but passable. I had to flag someone down to ask for a coffee refill. My lunch was not good at all! I ordered the bow tie pasta. It took forever to receive it. It was poor quality, it was cold in some places and warm in others, it was obviously heated in a microwave. The waitress never asked me if I was enjoying it. for the price of this dish, it should have been a better quality and should have had a slice of garlic toast with it. Fantastic and friendly server but the menu seems to have gotten smaller from my last visit. Very few choices and nothing particularly interesting. All standard fair. I ordered the classic burger with dressed mash. The mash wasn't even warm enough to melt the cheese and the burger itself was actually made of 2 tiny meat discs that were very well done. I did. It expect that the burger would be like that. Not a fan. Hubs had a steak which he liked. Our friend had pasta which she seemed to enjoy well enough Overall pretty under whelming. Place is lively and always has great food. Very busy on a Friday night. Especially with it being sooo close to the theatre. We went here around 730 on a Friday night. Waited about 10 minutes for a seat which was great! I was surprised. They have a time frame of about 45 minutes to get you seated, eating, and bill on the table... ( I used to work at Jacks) The food is always great. Fresh and flavorful. I had the ceasar and the Holy smokes BBQ burger. It was very good. Love the onion strings. I substituted for sweet potato fries. Also very good... And they came with a spicy curry mayo. . My girlfriend had the bowtie chicken parm. Her fav. We were in. Out. 42 minutes. Had a business lunch at this Jack Astor's. JA's is good at offering a well diverse menu of many different North American continental dishes that most will have no issue with. I consider it a bit on the more civilized side of chain restaurants. It's never been my favourite but I don't hate it! So it's somewhere in the middle for me! I went with the vegetarian pizza. This comes prepared by some JA's chefs "over garlic'ed" so I mentioned to my server that I would like it lighter on the garlic. Pizza was light doughy, lots of vegetables and not too much garlic! It had a light layer of arugula on top and very little balsamic glaze! Pizza was a 7 out of 10 for me. We sat in the lounge area which was decent. Service was friendly and adequate. read more

Jack Astor's is not a location that you want to go to if you have a headache. Fast pasted, busy and loud. The crowd is your typical lunch time crowd out for a quick bite to eat. Normally if there is a wait it is really not to long maybe 15 mins. On the menu which has a wide variety to hopefully allow everyone to enjoy their favourite, normally when I go I get the chicken fajitas, I love the grilled chicken and all the fresh grilled pepper and onions, oh and don't forget the sour cream and that green stuff. This time I actually went for something different which was the spicy chicken strips and Cesar salad. this was not to bad could be a bit more spice for me but as you know I love it hot. Not a bad meal for $12 bucks. read more

I'll start with the "Happy Hour" issue I had when we sat down and I said "Still in time for Happy Hour" I was told that I had missed it because Happy Hour is only until 6. It was 5:59. Jesus if it had been 6pm on the dot well then you have an argument but this waitress legit couldn't give me the Happy Hour price because it was 5:59. So customer service is obv not on your priority list. Second is the prices! The food at Jack Astor's is not even close to being good enough to warrant those prizes! We ordered the nachos with chili on the side and the chili was disgusting... there was hardly any toppings and the size was drastically smaller then when we used to come here. Worst experience when it comes to service. Went in there late for dinner and sat at the bar, since I had been traveling all day. Bartender totally ignored me. He was conversing with a couple of regulars or friends. After awhile I got his attention and asked what I they had on draft and handed me a beer list , then went back to conversing. Waited again for him to turn around, but never did...got frustrated and walked-out and went next door to Boston pizza...which was much better. The scene: a quiet mid-afternoon on a Sunday, well between both lunch and dinnertime rushes. Our table of four enters, seats ourselves in the bar after chatting to a friendly hostess, and hope for the best. The staff: there were about four to six on the bar side, three having a personal conversation, completely unfazed by the repeat eye contact I made in hopes of getting drinks or, at the very least, menus. The pace: fifteen minutes later, a server arrived, wiped down the table, and said she'd be back with menus. Both tasks at once, I assume, proved too difficult. Drinks came quickly, and then it was another fifteen minutes or so before our orders were taken. It then took 45 minutes before our meals came back, during which other servers occasionally refreshed a fountain pop, none explaining or even acknowledging the wait time. The food: despite the wait and against all odds, all four meals arrived hot and at the same time. Each meal was considered tasty (although I think the pizza got a lukewarm response) and my veggie burger was actually pretty nice for something I assume was largely reheated in a microwave. Nice barbecue sauce made all the difference. Unfortunately, my fries were flimsy and on the soggy side. The ones around the table were much better. The resolution: After our meals, the original server must have decided she wanted her tip after all, awkwardly deciding to tell personal stories and retroactively apologizing for the delay (without explanation of cause). Pros: Butcher paper and crayons on the table. ...and that's it. Cons: Cramped dining area (made worse by screaming toddlers). Unacceptable wait time (45 minutes for an appetizer, 20 for the bill). Awful service (rarely saw our waitress throughout the visit). Small, expensive portions. Terrible food quality (appetizers still frozen after a 45 minute wait; disgusting gravy). Jack Astor's must be doing something right, since it always seems to be packed, but I have yet to discover what this something is. Some family and I went here for dinner as a second choice (our first choice was closed, boo!). The experience was so-so, not as good as previous visits. We were seated in the back near the kitchen at a table in which we were told was for a reservation at 7pm but since it was only 5:30 we could sit there. That's fine but I kept watching the clock the entire time (note: we were NOT even near finished by 7pm - combination of eating, chatting, and a few ordering 2nd drinks - so they had to rearrange other tables for the group which was literally right behind us, the back of our chairs touching the back of their chairs). Also, I could see into the kitchen from my seat, and watching the line cook (not sure what section he was at, salads maybe?) fooling around and eating while making food was not very appealing. Oh and since when did Jack Astor's become hooters (for example) - seriously could the servers/hostess' skirts get any shorter!! I only saw two servers with pants on, the rest had mini black skirts - it is still a family restaurant at supper time so please put on some clothes! Anyways, I ordered a burger and fries with a salad to start - the salad was ok but some of the lettuce was frozen. The burger came out and I munched on some fries (soggy but I like my fries soggy, weird I know) before I dug into the burger. After my second bite I realized that the burger was quite scorched and had a gross burned taste, so the server offered to have another one made for me. In the end, the second burger was much better and juicy and they omitted my meal from our bill. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals, and the pad thai that someone else had looked really really good! Jack Astor's is a hit or miss I find, and so it is not a first choice when I want to grab a bite to eat - it can also be a bit pricey for what you get. read more

Stopped in for lunch with the family. My son ordered the kids burger--when it arrived it was burnt (almost like it had been re-cooked) and there were absolutely no toppings or condiments.; we were told that the kids burger came plain, and boy did it. My wife ordered the Pad Thai which she said lacked taste or flavour. I ordered a pasta and chicken dish which was alright but hardly memorable. I almost never post reviews but the food was so poor felt I had to. The other issue were the prices--extremely high considering the poor quality of the food. We won't be returning. read more

I hadn't been to Jack Astor's in a while but ended up there for a working lunch. The service is fast, and they're very attentive. The atmosphere is a little loud but we got a good corner and got straight to work. The food is pretty good - got a mushroom ravioli, lunch sized, and it was just right. It took 30 minutes to receive the drinks we ordered, and 45 minutes to have our food orders taken. They did redeem themselves with a relatively good wait time after placing our food order, and the food itself was decent, as to be expected in a chain restaurant. When it came time to pay, the server did not know how to use a prepaid mastercard. We told her she would need to input the exact amount of the cards worth and then input the remaining balance separately. She refused to do this and then "went to speak to her manager" and came back saying that they only accept prepaid Visa cards not prepaid MasterCards. As someone who worked in the service industry I know this is not how it works. That was 100$ that we had to pay with another method because she refused to attempt to try to use the card. read more

It's usually not my choice to eat at a big box restaurant, to me, they're like the Walmart of the food industry, but when you get that urge for lots of space to sit, and lots of parking.. big box is where it's at. The food is good here, nothing to write home about... we all know why you go to Jack Astors. To colour on the table! It's the deciding factor for me really. It's that little bit extra that sets it apart from all the other big restaurant chains, and makes it my favourite of that type. My friend suggested going to Jack Astor's because she'd heard good things about it. It's a typical type of chain restaurant. The restaurant wasn't busy when we went, but I'm sure it gets quite crowded. I ordered the smokey Jack burger and the beer and cheddar soup. The soup was delicious and creamy and the burger was one of the best I've had. Before flying back to Edmonton we decided to stop there again just to have another burger. This is a pretty big 'meh', but what do you expect from a big chain? We ordered a burger and a chicken sandwich, and they were both edible, though expensive for such pre-prepared ingredients. The salad and soup of the day - tomato bisque - were actually better than the mains they preceded. At least the Keith's Red was cold and offered up in a nice tall chilled glass. The service was just fine, until the latter part of the meal when we wanted to pay in order to get to a movie and our server stopped by at least three times to assure us she'd be right back with the machine to run credit cards through. She arrived with it just as the last bite was finished of the last meal, so it was just in time, but not overly impressive. This is quite possibly my favourite place to eat in all of Dartmouth Crossing. Actually, it is my favourite place! Now. Be warned. The service sucks. Seriously, every time i've come here it's been after work (around 11pm). Usually they close at 12pm and the waiters/waitresses always seemed royally angry that we arrive an hour before they close. Ummmm okie? which is really too bad because their food is extremely good. I love their chicken fingers, lobster dip and you know what else is amazing? they have... *Drumroll* VANILLA COKE! You might think: um, you can just buy that anywhere. False it's only sold in the United States, sometimes the Freak Lunchbox (for about $3 a can) or Petes (same price as FL). It's really hard to get a hold of so it's nice to get a quick refresher here. plus, you can draw on the tables (with paper) and PS. Yes. I'm a child. I don't usually leave reviews for chain restaurants, but I have to admit, I was very very impressed with the atmosphere and quality of the food. I had an ahi tuna sesame rice bowl, which was extremely good. The tuna was cooked rare, just as I would like it to be, served with sticky rice and a medley of veggies. Before one of our friend's went home for Christmas, my fiance and I went to dinner with him at Jack Astor's, Dartmouth Crossing. It was a Saturday evening, during Christmas shopping season, so it was really busy there. There was a small wait for a table, when we first got there but it was nothing that was ridiculous. I found the decor acceptable for a bar and grill type establishment except the fact of the hoards of TVs. Everywhere you looked there was a TV, it was odd and boarding on over stimulus. I ordered a seafood pasta, my fiance ordered a burger with fries and our friend ordered a steak dinner. When my pasta came out, I started to eat it and then when looking through I realized that it was void of scallops. The menu stated it had shrimp AND scallops. I flagged down a server and it was promptly corrected. The dish itself was very, very good. I was surprised how good it was to be honest, considering this is a chain restaurant. Furthermore, the head hostess came over and said because of the error, my meal would be comp'd. I was impressed, as I was not expecting that. My fiance's burger itself was a good portion,and it was cooked well, seasoned. The complaint with this dish, was the fries was a very small portion. Also, it had frizzled onions on the burger and he did not care for these. Our friends meal, was a NY strip with baked potato and vegetable. The baked potato was huge, and the cheese on it looked like it was neon cheddar. The potato was so large, that he could not finish it. Also, the vegetable du jour was broccoli it seemed, but the piece on his plate was huge! It was way to big for presentation purposes and should have been cut into more manageable sizes. The steak he said was cooked to what he requested. Overall, I am not big on chain restaurants, however Jack Astor's was good and they admitted when they made a mistake and fixed it promptly. Checked this place out for lunch during the week. We didn't have to wait too long and the place had a pretty good crowd, looked like the business bunch. We had the chili chicken tenders with fries. I'm not sure why the name had chili in them there was no chili and the chicken wasn't that spicey. The chicken was very tender and juicy. However, the Coke we ordered was a little on the flat side. The service was efficient and friendly. If we were in the area again we'd try the place again since it has a very diverse menu. read more

I'm not generally a fan of chain restaurants, but on the odd occasion that I go to the movies ar Datrmouth Crossing or Bayers Lake, I typically spot at Jack's for a bite to eat. The place is often very loud, which I don't enjoy, but if you eat before the early show, on the lounge side it's not too bad. I like that you can draw on the tablecloth, it brings me back to my childhood days. The waiters are always friendly, but sometimes a little too friendly for my tastes "Hi I'm Jeff and I'm going to be your server and best friend this evening, you should really try the burger, I eat them everyday" etc. The menus is large and seems to have something for almost everyone, but I can't comment much on the the items, because I always get the same thing, the Honey Sesame Chicken. Small pieces of deep fried chicken, a few stir fried carrots and things in a sweet, honey sauce, served over rice. It's not healthy or gourmet, but I have a weakness for it, when I'm craving junky comfort food. The other thing I like about Jack's is that I can get in and out really quickly, which is great because I like to get a good seat in the theatre. Bottom line, I wouldn't eat to eat here everyday, but it's a good place to stop before going to one of the 18 screen movie theatres read more

Terrible tastes and plenty of fail sauce. I ordered the fries with poutine as a starter - big mistake. This had sausage that tasted like pepperoni and looked like fake bacon bits (that strange orange-red color than can't be natural). The mix of flavors didn't go together and this upset my stomach. I followed my unappetizing fries with a huge risk - buttered chicken. I didn't think it was a good idea to order Indian food from a place like Jack Astor's but I disregarded my gut feelings and ended up with literal bad gut feelings. The buttered chicken was sickly sugary sweet. The "naan" was the same consistency as pita bread. The portion was adequate but it is hard to tell when each bite of food is labor in itself. My review shouldn't count for the entire restaurant because I think the burgers looked fine. Contradicting myself a restaurant shouldn't serve even a single dish as bad as the butter chicken. I am not Canadian so I don't know if super sweet and lack of real Indian spices is a local take that accommodates the particular taste-buds of the Halifax community. I have been to India, not all of it but parts of the West and North, with a single dive into the South in and around Chennai (Madras). This food I ate didn't resemble Indian food at all. I will never eat at Jack Astor's again because I didn't get away from the place with only a bad taste in my mouth. I left with an upset stomach and some self loathing. WHY DID I ORDER INDIAN FOOD AT JACK ASTOR'S?
