Jack Astor's one of the OG's at York Blvd. I used to eat here all the time when I worked in the area. It's probably been a good 10 years since my last visit. This recent visit was a huge disappointment. We were in the area, trying to get a table at a nearby spot for lunch, Instead of heading back to Markham and missing the lunch hour, so we decided to stop in. We were greeted almost immediately. Loved the newer look inside, since my last visit. All the framed magazine covers adorning the walls. Hubby had some work to finish up, so I requested a booth in a quiet area of the restaurant, so he could have extra table space and for us not be near the bar area. There were only 4 other booths on our side that were occupied. I immediately noticed 2 large tables set up right beside us, we were assured that the "party" was arriving later. Nope! They arrived 10 minutes after we arrived and we ordered our food. It all went down from there. 1. Took over 30 minutes for our apps to arrive. Actually 1 app, because our server forgot the 2nd one we ordered while she hurriedly only took care of the 2 tables of over 20+ people beside us. 2. Ordered nachos and that was a big disappointment. Asked for no jalapeños and our nachos were covered in jalapeños. Back that went and 15 minutes the platter arrived and covered with tomatoes. Probably one of the worst nachos I have ever tried at a restaurant. Dry over bakedcheese and over baked chips. The tomatoes are not listed as bruschetta on the menu, so not impressed at all with that. Brought the copious amounts of tomato to the attention of our server and she had nothing much to say. 3. Ordered poutine for my youngest, Which is noted on the menu as "Jack's One Pound Poutine". My youngest enjoyed it, however the gravy was cold. Not room temp cold - COLD!! Plus labelling this as one pound of poutine???? This was so skimpy in portion, that you could see the bottom of the bowl. More like a snack poutine, yet priced at $13.99. I would rather drive 40 min to Vaughan for Smoke's Poutinerie for that price. At least the gravy is warm and served with fresh cut fries. 4. Very poor service overall. Forgot another one of our mains and the server was completely unapologetic. No refills for water or drinks until my hubby went to the kitchen to get someone's attention. They just couldn't be bothered to properly serve a table of 3 while they fawned over the party beside us. Whether we are a table of 2, 3, pr 4 vs tables of 20+, service for us should not be compromised to satisfy the other guests. That is on them to have more staff available to accommodate everyone. Came here twice recently so I can judge the experience on more than just a single night. This place is popular for the late night folks, with family bringing their kids along. Parking lot is pretty well lit and no safety concerns. We were seated very quickly on both occasions. Patio seems quite lively, but we don't want to chance on getting any second-hand smoke or car exhaust from the parking lot. It looks like they didn't hire enough staff on weekends so it took a while before the wait staff finally greeted us at our table. Baked potato and chicken wings were lukewarm. Pasta dishes were hit and miss. The breaded chicken linguine was very delicious and well worth the price. But the chicken bow-tie lacked sufficient sauce. We added cream cheese and bacon bits to the baked potato, yet it's still lacking sufficient flavour and a little dry. The 1 pound chicken wing was glaced with honey garlic. The 1-lb chicken wings were small, only 10 pieces so we did not think we get 1-lb. We asked for buffalo medium but there was no sauce tossed into the wings. The BBQ burgers were ok. The reso of 18 was split into two large tables but since only 12 ppl showed up we were easily able to work with the friendly staff at Jack's to make it into one table. I haven't been to Jack's in a while and noticed that they revamped their menu (to my absolute delight) with a Fresh Bowls section. I ordered their miso glazed salmon bowl and it was so filling and delicious! My Atlantic salmon was cooked perfectly and all the ingredients were really fresh (avocado, beets, quinoa, grape tomatoes). I was actually really shocked that it tasted pretty good. Better than decent. We ordered a few beers and shots as well that night. I would totally recommend trying one of their new Fresh Bowls. The only thing that I'd have to say was that I noticed my bill at the end of the night had an 18% automatic gratuity due to the "large party size". Stopped in to grab a very late lunch/early dinner. Hadn't been to a Jack Astor's in a long time. We caught shift change so it took a little while to get seated and place our order. The menu now has a small but decent variety of vegetarian options. They have a bunch of bowls that can be made vegetarian by substituting tofu for the chicken. The Coconut Curry Bowl was really tasty. It's very rich tasting. Felt I needed the occasional sip of my drink to refresh the palate a bit. Not really sure why we had to go to that length to prove to him that it was bacon bits, but I suppose that's how they roll at Jack Astors...fried onions unless proven otherwise.. So far - service: abysmal I ordered the Italian burger which sounded good, but unfortunately was poorly executed. Two 4 oz DRY burger patties topped with goat cheese and balsamic vinegar salad, served with a side of fries We also ordered calamari which was rubbery, a little tasteless and came with some awful ranch type dressing. We also ordered this cheesy bread appetizer which was very greasy and oily but pretty tasty. Finally my wife ordered the hot buffalo chicken fingers which were delicious (shocking!) Ohhh did this use to be THE SPOT! I have been coming to Jack Astor's for years and years, especially this location, but not sure what has been happening to it lately! It seems like it's been going further down at every visit, which is very bad to see considering the size and reputation of the brand. My last visit to the restaurant was about two weeks ago, we sat at the bar/lounge area. Our waitress took about 10 minutes to show up and greet us with a couple of menus. In terms of food, this location has always been delicious, but even the quality of the food here seems to be lower than usual. The bad service continued at our table, starting from the late appetizers, to forgetting one of the three apps we ordered, as she only brought the bruschetta and nachos and forgot the calamari! which arrived AFTER we got our mains, although I told her to cancel it. Then the cherry on top was receiving the wrong side to my steak!! As I ordered loaded baked potato but I got French Fries instead! No compensation was offered, and no official apology from the waitress other than "oh i'll correct that" I understand that we're all humans and make mistakes, but when it happens that many times on the same table...then multiply that by how many tables this server is serving, then you have a major issue. My husband and I went Friday night around 6 to grab a quick bite. Was seated at a high table in front of the bar. Was okay until after a few minutes I noticed a lot of traffic of servers passing by to the dining room. I moved my chair to see if it helped me and others around me. Nope. I told another server about it being tight and she was very friendly and advised I mention the concerns to the manager. Manager passed by and I told her. She said she was sorry of the space issues, I did tell also a server struggled to carry a drink tray and beer jug through the narrow aisles. She offered to move us but wasn't very observant we had already come close to finishing our meals.... Apparently they renovated as per the manager. Beer selection here is quite decent for Richmond Hill, especially compares to other chain restaurants that shares the same parking lot! A stamp of approval from my Yelp Drinking Buddy the Beer Maven. We drank beers and shared a Gaucho Fries ($6.83) - Yukon Gold fries tossed with mozzarella cheese and a semi-sun-dried tomato and garlic chimichurri sauce, parsley and feta cheese. Although my friend and I were slightly picky with our choice for seating, the staff had no qualms and let us choose our seating as we pleased.
