Just got back from an incredible fishing trip with guide Jack Trout on the Upper Sacramento River, and I can't say enough good things about the experience. I brought my 8-year-old son Brandon along for his first real fly fishing adventure, and Jack made it a day we'll both remember forever. From the moment we hit the water, Jack was patient, knowledgeable, and great with my son. The float down the river was absolutely stunning, and the fishing action was steady throughout the day. Jack knew exactly where to go, and we hooked into some beautiful rainbows... 12 strikes and 9 landed, some north of 18 inches. Jack grilled up a hot ribeye steak lunch riverside--seriously next level. It felt more like a gourmet adventure than a fishing trip at times. Spotting wildlife along the river including deer and a bald eagle as we tackled the mild rapids was awesome! I've fished this river from the banks for years, but the float trip really gets you to locations that you can't otherwise access. Private afternoon lesson today on McCloud River. Didn't see another human for the duration. I'm a complete beginner and had zero expectations. But Jack was terrific - provided everything, was patient and very kind and pleasant to hang with. His dog River was a fun companion too. Most important I caught 3-4 trout and had a blast! My daughter and I hooked up with Jack for part of her 21st birthday. Wanted to give her a fly fishing experience. She's an outdoorsy girl so this was perfect. Jack and his dog River were great. Easy to talk with and get along. We floated down the Sac. Jack put us on sone very nice fish. He definitely knows the Sac. Just look at the picture! Btw, his lunch was very tasty. Jack showed up on time and provided all the equipment and knowledge that we needed. He also provided us with a wonderful lunch. We caught quite a few fish. At least 10 or 12 and release them all. He also took lots of pictures of us with our fish and send them to me on my phone. All in all, he was a wonderful guide, and I would recommend him to anybody. Customer service could use a little help. I called to ask about some water regulations and to pick up a few flies. I've done this same thing many times with different shops and services over the years. I got a prompt text response which was nice, asking how he could help. I'd asked for regulation information and to possibly pick up some recommended flies. His reply was pictures of guided trips without any answers to my questions. I mentioned we'd be traveling through and he offered a guided trip. That's nice and all, but I asked for regulation information and flies? I politely answered no to the guided offer, mentioning my wife and I like fishing by ourselves. His reply was "Good on ya" Not a kind or honest way to run or promote your business. A little effort to help people out goes a long ways JT. You could have handled that a bit better and felt good at the end of the day knowing you spread some good in the world. Sorry to have inconvenienced you sir. It's your business to run however you choose. Really a liquor store and not a fly fishing store - stopped in to chat water and pick up a few flies to try to support the business - it's not that kind of place. Signs on the outside of the shop are misleading. Definitely not a welcoming vibe when I walked into the shop. Limited fly selection trays were empty and adjacent against the wall were marginally stocked shelves of traditional gear including power bait. Perhaps the guiding is truly superior as I have read, but I fished with a guide from a different shop. read more

Rafting down the Upper Sacramento River...a professional fishing guide...a gourmet lunch along the banks of the river. Fly fishing and catching trout...this was lots of fun. We did a full day trip, and my 11 year old son was the best of us newbie fly-fishermen. Jack Trout was engaging and knows a lot of the history of this area. He guides here in No Cal during the summer and spends the winter guiding in Chile. The lunch was tasty: Gnocchi, wine if we had wanted, and cookies for dessert I believe. It was hot in early August. Drink lots of water and make sure you take a good hat and protect yourself from the sun. The river was beautiful with steep rocky cliffs on either side. Didn't see another soul on the water after we left the embarkation area. We did see a bald eagle. Fishing this time of year was not the best for catching a million fish: may have been a little too warm, but we all caught nice sized fish. Oh, and if you go, make sure you keep a camera of some kind if you are going to want to take pictures. Jack packs up all your items in a waterproof container so unless you keep something on you there will only be the few pics he takes. Oh, and no restrooms on the river...make sure you take a few squares with you if you think you will feel the need! read more

A bit of reading but I have never ran into anyone like this on the rivers in my thirty plus years of fishing in northern California. Came across Jack Trout on the McCloud River recently. I'm sure you have heard of him, he guides in the McCloud area. I had Mr. Trout guide myself and my wife a little over a year ago. I thought it would be good to take my wife out with a guide to get her some "professional" tutoring. She thought so as well. The day we went out with him the wind came up pretty good mid day. We hadn't caught any fish so Mr. trout suggested to cut the day short and he would take us out again and credit us the half day. My wife thought that would be ok so we took him up on his suggestion given we hadn't caught anything with him that morning. Fast forward to last week. I had called Mr Trout to take him up on the half day of fishing. I mentioned that it wouldn't be my wife but my dad. I knew it was short notice but I thought maybe he would have an opening. He didn't and so we set a day in July for my wife and I to go out with him. I texted him if he knew any easy to fish areas to take my dad to when we went up. My dad is 85 and hadn't fished for about two years and, well I asked. He suggested a few places to try. Places I knew of but I thought it was nice of him to share them. In the text message I had said I was glad to hear business was picking up from COVID. He thanked me and I said No, thank you for the suggestions. He then replied, "lighten up". I texted back that he had taken it wrong, I was thanking him. Fast forward to the week my dad and I go fishing. We drove into the McCloud River on the lower end. No easy drive. One of those drives that takes about an hour for twelve miles. We got to a camp site area I knew of and pulled off. There was two vehicles there. Pretty empty for that long stretch of water. My dad and I rigged up and I walked down to a spot to start fishing. When I neared the river I noticed a guy fishing about forty or so yards to my right and I proceeded to go down to the river about twenty or so yards to my left, when I see someone running along the river towards were I was going to enter. I remember thinking that it was dangerous to run along what is a narrow and somewhat sketchy rock cliff side above the water. When I had climbed down along the river to a large rock out cropping there was Jack Trout. The first thing he said to me was "you can't fish here, my client is going to fish to here. Now the distance between me and his client was considerable. I had been in water with fisherman much closer fishing together. Mr. Trout says again I have my seventy two year old client and he is going to fish this part. I said really you're going to save this section of the McCloud for your use? So I could see this wasn't going to be a comfortable situation so I tried to start up a conversation. I said your Jack Trout. We talked on the phone last week about guiding me and my eighty five year old dad, remember? He continued with, you can't fish here my seventy two year old client is going to fish here. Why he kept repeating the man's age I don't know. I said he's way over there and this is public water. Mr. Trout started to yell at me. "You have an anger issue", "you are an angry man", "you have a problem buddy". I said "what is this about"? "What are you talking about"? He took off up the river. I looked back down river and didn't see his client and was focused on shaking off the weird incident. The place I started to fish from is a rock outcropping over a pool about six or more feet down. The pool swallowed my leader and tippet so it was about fifteen feet deep and moving strong on top. I was fishing nymphs off the river. I was watching my line and mending and slowly turning to my right when I got a glimpse of someone coming down to the bank kind of fast. Not looking up from my line a boulder the size of two footballs fly's over my right shoulder. I mean so close that I felt it go by and lands into the pool. I of course turned to see what had just occurred when I see Mr. Trout running back up the hillside yelling, "you coward, you're a coward". I yelled back what do you think you're doing you almost killed me". He keeps going up the hillside yelling, "your nothing but a coward, a stupid coward, don't you call me about the half day you coward". I didn't understand what I was a coward about. He was irrational I hadn't been in a situation like this since I was a kid, but I have been around long enough to know when someone is trying to pick a fight with me. I was shaken and I was mad and at the same time grateful to the Lord I hadn't been hit with and sent into the rushing water below. I stood there a few minutes. I heard a motor start and go off into the distance and thought it OK to go back up to our truck and avoid Mr. Trout. We go out a few days per year with Jack and we've had 20+ fish days including bright, wild steelhead on the Klamath. He puts you on the fish with lots of opportunities for success! We had a trip on the lower sac booked since April 2022. It is now October 2022 and Jack backed out of the trip 5 days before it was supposed to take place. Reservations cancelled, etc. Make your own choices, but I would never recommend this guy. He can't be trusted. read more

What just happened? That was crazy! Jack showed up to take us fishing this morning at the McCloud Hotel. My hubby was telling him that we were disappointed with our stay as there was no AC and a lack of customer service in the hotel. He promptly flipped it and said "are we good here? You're scaring me" "I hate to start off on a bad vibe". WTF? Keep the money, Jack. You need it more than we do. We have better things to do with our Sunday than going fishing with someone that obviously didn't want to be there. read more

Recently took my wife and adult children on a steelhead fishing trip with Jack Trout. We floated down the legendary Klamath River. Our group ranged from novices to absolute beginners. Jack supplied the equipment and the knowledge to make it a fun trip for all despite having to provide a lot of attention to our group untangling and re-rigging lines. Don't be intimidated if you're a fly fishing beginner. Jack makes it easy and fun. Everyone in our group caught fish. Jack is a professional at guiding and knows every rock in the river. He's also a great host with patience and a good sense of humor. His knowledge of the history and geology of the area is enlightening. We had a flat tire the morning of our trip and were delayed by an hour an a half from our meeting and start time. No problem for Jack. He adjusted the trip and kept us out on the water longer than he expected, but it didn't bother him a bit. His attitude truly is "Hakuna Matata". We look forward to fishing with him again. read more

He was so knowledgeable and friendly and knowing it was our very first fly fishing experience, he seemed to go the extra mile to make our experience that much more enjoyable! And Kobe Beef (his dog) was a hoot! The weather was perfect on our trip down the Klamath River and the food and beer was so yummy!! He even baked cookies to celebrate hubby's birthday which I found VERY thoughtful! This was my second time using Jack for his guide services and it was just as good as the first time, if not better. This time, we floated down the Upper Sac with my buddy, Jack & Kobe (Jack's dog). We were able to hook into a couple trout within minutes and then it slowed down a little bit. True to Jack's vast knowledge, he made some adjustments with the flies and we were right back into hooking some beautiful native rainbows. Jack prepared a very tasty chicken & potatoes lunch and it gave exactly the energy we needed to continue fishing the holes where Jack pointed out to us. In fact, my arm was pretty sore by the end of the day from all the fish I was catching. I have only been fly fishing about 6 times and Jack is very patient with all skill levels. He taught me a lot in the two times I have gone with him and it has definitely improved my abilities. By getting Jack as your guide, he will not only hook you into some great fish, but will teach you as much as you are willing to absorb. Jack is also extremely knowledgeable in the surroundings and not only is a fantastic fishing guide, but also a great tour guide. We learned a lot about the history of the 7 mile stretch we floated and other nearby areas. The bald eagle at the end of the float was a perfect way to cap off a great day of fishing with Jack. We had an awesome experience fishing the lower Sacramento River with Jack. He was extremely knowledgable about the river and even imparted some local history about the gold rush on us. I'm a fairly experienced fly fisher but I took a novice with me for his first float trip. Jack help him connect with several fish and he boated his first trout on a fly rod. The river is cold and beautiful. I was a little shocked and hesitant at first that we were using 12 foot nymph rigs but that went away quickly as we hooked up with several trout between the 3 and 5 pounds. Jack was in no hurry to finish the day. He took his time on the float. You could tell he loved fishing not just punching the 8 hour time card and collecting his fee. We hooked up with 15 fish that day and shockingly when meeting a couple other guides found out they got skunked. I Highly recommend. He does bring his dog Beef so if you have an allergy let him know but if not he's a fishy dog so bring him. read more

Our 10-year old daughter wanted to learn how to fly fish and we always wanted to explore Mt. Shasta on our way to Oregon. Jack was AWESOME! We were complete rookies. Let me give you an update. Jack Trout just sent me an gift certificate to try to resolve our terrible fishing experience with him. His solution was the next time we were in Chile we could fish with him for free. Do you think we will be in Chile next week? If we were do you think we would ever fish with him again? Do not use this guy or you will be sorry. We have asked for a refund and that is what we want. He did not show up in the country. He knew he was not going to be there. We had to pay the guide in cash that we did fish with and he was only available for half the time because he works for someone else. I have fished extensively from Africa to New Zealand & this was the worst service I have ever experienced. After much e-mailing & phone discussion on a trip to Chile Jack failed to show up in country . I mean the guy never even made it there. We were finally made aware he was not showing via e-mail the day before I was to fish. He stated he had everything handled & sent another guide/ partner that he claimed he had been w/ for 15 years turns out the guy has fished for him 3 years when not busy w/ his own guiding & another lodge. Lodging was less than promised or advertised as were the "spectacular shore lunches" . I had planned on fishing 7 days & cut that to 4 & finally 3 as his partner wanted me to meet him 2 hours away from where we were staying. Too many other good guides around to hassle w/ this guy & his lies. read more

My family and I went down to Pucon in the Lake District of Chile this November and it was a given that we would dedicate some time to do some fly fishing. Once we got in touch with Jack Trout (found via Google) and his wife Carola, we didn't need to look any further. Both of them were absolutely incredible and put so much time and effort into our planning The trip itself was wonderful. My family (wife and two teen age boys) had such a great day on the Rio Rahua and all caught big, beautiful browns and rainbows. The guides, Edgar and Esteban, were excellent guides with great senses of humor. My kids had such a fun time with Esteban. These guys worked really hard and served us a wonderful stream side lunch with salmon, beer and wine. Excellent day. Jack and Carola were also more than happy to assist us with our other plans. Pucon is known as the adventure capital of Chile's Lake District and we were looking to also do a volcano hike, horseback riding and zip lining. They put us in touch with their pal Willy Hatcher at Sol y Nieve Pucon Adventures who I would also recommend to anyone (see my separate review about them on Trip Advisor). All in all, Jack Trout runs a top notch operation and I wish more businesses would show the same level of service to their customers that we experienced with Jack, Carola and their guides.
