My wife and I were in the area for the Leona Divide trail run - and ate at Jack's Place twice for dinner. Badge burger and fries/onion rings with IPAs on one night (after the race) and Pesto pasta and Greek salad with Zinfandel wine on the 2nd night. Both meals were excellent - service was perfect - fun to sit and chat with some locals. Highly recommend if you are in the area! read more

My husband and I didn't go in this Valley before. We had a meeting with our friend and asked for her to choose a nice , different and funky place. She chose this place. First, it was a long lunch, and the owners were so friendly with us. We stayed there jus chatting for hours after lunch. Second, the food is really tasty and comfortable for a rain day. The ginger bread pie is unbelievable tasty. Good price, and the community really eats there. I loved the atmosphere. I will back to cherry festival for sure. Take a Saturday day to visit The Valley and eat there. read more

I hate to update my review but the last couple of times I have been here the food has not been good. Had a recent breakfast with tasteless eggs, stale sourdough toast and over cooked hash browns. The price 23 dollars. It is so hard to find a decent breakfast place in the AV anymore. I either have to drive to Tehachapi or further up 138. read more

Jack's place is well known and widely popular, but I had never been there. We arrived on a Sunday at 11:00 and it was packed. But since there were only 2 of us, the wait was short. The Servers were very busy, but still provided prompt and professional service. I had the California which was very good. My wife had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich which was fantastic. We went there for lunch, but most folks were having breakfast instead of lunch. They have an extensive breakfast lunch menu. It's definitely worth the drive out the Leona Valley to visit Jacks. Next time I will try the breakfast. read more

Today I decided to take a bit of a drive. I headed to Jack's Place out in Leona Valley. I had Bible study homework to do and I love having a meal by myself and reflecting on my homework. I drove past livestock. Cows. Horses. Goats. Then, I arrived at a cute and quaint little place. I went in and was greeted by a pretty young hostess with a warm smile. She told me I could sit anywhere I wanted. The restaurant was clean and felt very cozy. The decor was welcoming and warm. It had a ranch feel. I ordered an iced tea. It was nice and strong. I ordered the Jack Attack with scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage and bacon, Jacks potatoes and an English muffin and gravy. I also asked for salsa on the side. I was given a choice and chose the green salsa. It was delicious. The gravy was a nice peppered country gravy, seasoned to perfection. The English muffin was toasted without being burnt. The eggs were nice and fluffy. The bacon was crispy and tasty. The sausage was deliciously juicy. The potatoes were absolute perfection. They were crispy without having any sign of burning. The onions were grilled to a caramel and delicious. My check was brought only after I was finished eating. She brought me another tea and cleared the table. I let her know I still had homework. She was very patient and sweet. Still checked on me after I had paid. I'm very happy I tried this place. Well worth the drive. I almost forgot to mention how adorable quaint this place is. The table behind me was two guys (father and adult son) talking about dirt bikes. The dad surprised his son and told him he's buying him the new hot rod when they leave and it matches the dirt bike. The son hugged him and told him he lives him. The table in front of me was talking about cows and horses they own. Then they were dishing about their wives, ending by saying how blessed they are. As I was leaving, a motorcycle club pulled up and asked me to take their picture. I love MCs so it was very heartwarming. I loved this place! read more

The food here is usually awesome, but the coffee literally taste like it belongs to smokers lol. Only because it's so bitter it literally taste like aged mineral water with dark coloring. We have been sitting here for over 20 minutes and have not gotten a refill on coffee or water or acknowledged until we beg them for silverware and napkins. I really want to give them more stars because our food is amazing but for some reason every time I come here the ball has been dropped. Update: after the 3rd pot of coffee it got more tolerable and the $8 breakfast Burrito was 100% great as always;) The Eggs Benedict was AmazaBallz and on point! Do not pass this place up. I love places like this out here in the middle of nowhere that throw down! Great food and nice folks who run the place. I got one of the best chicken fried steaks I've had in a very long time and the meat was soft and not chewy. One person took our order, another person brought our drinks and no one ever came back for refills. I had to go and pay the bill at the cashier because all the servers were out of site and there was quite a bit of people waiting outside to come in. No doubt ill come back because all their food looked great but ill be on their asses for better service! read more

Ordered two different burgers 5150 and the California both are amazing. They are so huge I could barley finish my own burger. And the fries I can't complain about it. They also serve coke. Came in today to give this place a try, of course it's a busy Sunday . I saw maybe about 4/5 servers all running around. We were sat down and waited for about 15 mins for someone to come by and get our drink order but no one came, we asked a girl if we could order place our order and she said rudely a server will be right with you and walked away. The food was excellent, the wait staff, Griffin, was genuinely nice and came to us to ask periodically if we needed anything, so we got refills on my iced tea. The menu has a good varierty of items to choose from, I ordered the turkey, Avocado and bacon sandwich and chose to upgrade my curly fries to onion rings. The sandwich and onion rings were both delicious! My girlfriend ordered a vegetarian omlette, potatoes and toast with jam and butter. She said it was excellent. This restaurant is a gem, it was my third time here, and the staff have always been very friendly and prompt in fulfilling our requests. I also love the neighboring restaurant, Casa Gutierrez as well, it is nice to get such a wide variety of cuisines in Leona Valley. Patronize both places and keep them both in business, so that we can continue to enjoy the fine dining and good atmospheres at these two wonderful restaurants. read more

Just left this place for a Father's Day brunch. There was a total of 9 people. As the waitress went around asking for our drink orders, my wife ordered a coffee and a water. She received neither. I asked for one for her and still never got it. When my wife ordered food, she asked for two eggs. The waitress asked if there was anything else and my wife said no. She never got her eggs. Waitress said she never heard her order even though it was repeated back to her. All in all, my wife never ate as she was ignored. This was a usual spot for us, but this experience made this our last time eating here. I understand people make mistakes at times but to be blatantly ignored in a customer service environment is unacceptable. So long Jack's Place. read more

While taking care of some business in Lake Hughes, it would have been easy to grab lunch at any of…read morethe 8 or 10 famous chains on either side of the freeway exit; but it was way more fun to slip into The Rock Inn and slip back to a time of home cooking and super friendly service that instantly makes you feel like family. The stone facade of this nearly 100-year old tavern implies major staying power, and the dark wood, very old-style interior design backs that up in spades. This place has seen many days and nights, and the staff seems to have seen every customer many times before. My server, Terry, immediately pegged me as a newbie, greeting me with a big hello and making suggestions about the food. They've got most of the usual roadside tavern options on the menu (burgers and club sandwiches, eggs and omelets, etc.), but the top draw here is the Tri-Tip and Pork Shoulder, both of which are smoked on site, and served as BBQ plates or 2 sizes of sandwiches. I ordered the small Tri-Tip Sandwich, paired with fries (though they have several other side options you can upgrade to). The meat is thinly shaved, moist and tender despite not being pink. It's glazed with teriyaki sauce and resembles the kind of roast beef sandwich you'd get in Buffalo, NY (beef on weck) or at a place like Brennan & Carr in Brooklyn. They also put mayo on the bun, and I could have lived without that (it's not necessary, as the meat is very flavorful, and the smoky accents do stand out nicely). Fries were standard issue, but very properly cooked and salted, arriving hot and crispy. They were great when dipped into the house-made BBQ sauce or the house-made Ranch, both of which came on the side. Over all, the sandwich and fries were a very generous portion, and the larger size (served to someone else nearby) was quite hefty for just $3 more. Now, I didn't see any desserts on display, but I had a feeling this was the kind of place where there might be some homemade sweetness, and I was right -- they had 4 house-baked pies available: Apple, Peach, Cherry, and a mixed berry pie called Fruits Of The Forest, which is what I chose. I could detect cherries, blackberries and rhubarb, but there may have been others in this sweet & sour filling that worked perfectly with the scratch-made crust that was buttery and savory and pretty much a perfect bite from the past. There's also a full bar with a nice selection of liquors and beers. If I didn't have to drive off the mountain and home on I-5, I would have happily spent the afternoon knocking back a few and chatting with the locals, who I'm sure gather here most days after work. This is a fun, fun place, and if you're traveling up the 5, it's worth a detour up the hill to grab some tri-tip and support good people serving the kind of good, scratch cooking you rarely find in a fast food world.

There's a down home, country feel to the 49'er Saloon subtly referring to the California gold rush days of yore. Looks like an ideal place for bikers and horse riders. Hearty grub with hints of traditional regional American cuisine and full bar where you will not leave hungry. There's a formal dining room for larger gatherings for families and friends. Great place to eat after scrambling around Vasquez Rocks, visiting Animal Tracks, or just hungry on CA 14 frwy. Just get off the Crown Valley offramp and head due south for about a mile. 1) Wild Game Sausage: Walk On The Wild Side With Jalapeño-Cheddar Stuffed Elk With Roasted Peppers & Onions. Big portion enough for 2 meals since the Elk sausage is so rich. Elk sausage is ground fine and stuffed tightly in the casing for dense, firm texture. You're getting your money's worth. The Jalapeño has a nice, warm piquancy while the Cheddar gives a dairy fermented undertone. The julienned red and green bellpeppers are pleasantly al dente; the onions are caramelized to bring out their sweetness. It's all sautéed in an agrodolce/sweet-sour sauce along with a touch of garlic. 1a) Side dish: Nice little garden salad including green lettuce, diced purple onion, chopped tomato, grated carrot. Chose blue cheese dressing to use for the "Buffalo Burger". 2) "Buffalo Burger" is extra finely ground, plush, velvety Bison meat. So when I ordered it medium rare, the patty turned out mushy. Next time, I will order it medium to firm up and give more of a chaw to the meat. Opted for two slices of not too crispy, meaty bacon. Mayo, tomato, green lettuce leaf, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, dense brioche bun. I spread on the blue cheese dressing to give a little funk to what I thought would be the blood minerality of the Bison meat. It's another substantial dish. 2a) Side dish of standard French fries which was crisp as requested although it didn't quite have that ineffable earthy, mildly sweet, potato flavour 1-2a) Allegiance India Pale Ale, Lancaster CA was a good counter to both food items. Dry, heavy bodied, fruity with scents of orange zest, lacquer, touch of cleansing acidity. 49'er doesn't leave you hungry so didn't have enough room for dessert. Tasted like leftovers.... I went to Jack's for dinner last evening after being told how awesome it is. The ribs were average tasting and lukewarm. They are served with jalapeno Mac and Cheese which was really spicy, but it was cold like it had been in the ramekin in the refrigerator and not reheated long enough. (Emphasis on reheated mac and cheese) The cheese sauce was really thin and runny. Maybe it's me, but I think mac and cheese sauce should be on the thick and cheesy side. The beans were lukewarm, but beans can be eaten at any temp. The cornbread was just sad. It was also refrigerator cold---who serves cold cornbread? Shouldn't cornbread be warm and served fresh out of the oven with butter? It was baked in a muffin tin, which is fine, but it was baked to a very dark brown which made it extremely dry, and again....it just came out of the fridge. And, no butter was on the table. No butter? My husband ordered a bowl of enchilada soup, which arrived 5 minutes after the rest of the entrees were served. One of our party had to go ask the kitchen to bring it (it had obviously been forgotten). When it arrived, it was also cold. Shouldn't soup be ladled out of a tureen that's kept on warm? Perhaps the cold food was a result of not enough waiters and waitresses. There was one man who was working very hard trying to keep up, and a woman who seemed to be over-stressed and in over her head. We were sitting right next to the kitchen, and I kept hearing them call for a server, but the servers were trying to keep up with the dining room needs. That's why they get 2 stars instead of 1. But this part is inexcusable. The dinner tasted like leftovers. I think they cooked it, put it in the fridge, and then pulled it out to reheat it, but didn't heat it long enough. The 40 minute wait from the time we ordered until the time it was served? Maybe it was sitting and waiting to be served too long, but shouldn't it have been under a warmer? Refrigerator temp food suggests it was not prepared immediately before it was served. That's what "leftovers" are. Leftovers...... read more

Read very mixed reviews on Jack's Place however we like to support local businesses wherever we go. Wait wasn't too long in spite of the Memorial Day weekend in fact up to this point this was the only real positive upon entering the restaurant. Our server Melanie was very attentive and got our drinks out quickly but then it started going downhill fast. Next she brought out a side salad which looked delicious however half way through it there was a bug of some sort in it, which she immediately offered a replacement. Uh, No. Bug in lettuce usually means another bug in lettuce. She was very apologetic. Meal for 5 arrived in bits and pieces and where I come from you do not eat until everyone has their plate so that meant cold food for those of us that waited. 2 burgers, a kids plate of chicken tenders, a hot link sandwich, BLT consisting of TWO pieces of bacon, 2 iced teas and 3 sodas topped the charts at $82.00 including tip. Somewhat surprised that management hadn't visited our table to address the concerns we had thus making us feel disrespected as patrons. I used to live in Leona Valley and I know that this restaurant has change a few times but this time was just unbelievable. I went with some of my friends for lunch. We were sat at a round both, right where the register use to be. The place looked great but the floor was dirty. Our server or manager (he was wearing a red dress shirt.) was nice but he didn't know the menu and let me tell you that the menu isn't even a page long. The food looked and tasted good, better then the last cook. I was fine until I looked over my shoulder towards the kitchen and saw a mouse trap on the floor. I first try Jacks Place right after their grand opening and been in a few times after and had both good and bad service. Food is good, but prices are a bit high for the area. One thing I really like is the fact the hired some local people! On some of my more positive experiences I was served by a young man, I believed his name was Justin. I mainly enjoyed the conversations we had about the Lakes and communities. They also have a very lovely waitress that I usually see working Breakfast I don't recommend going for dinner.
