It's decided...Jack's Place is my favorite hoagie in PA! I have been there a handful of times and everything they do is the best. Service, quality and value...it doesn't get any better. The ingredients are the freshest and the taste is Devine. My absolute favorite!

I honestly think Jack's may be one of the best kept secrets in northeast Philly. I'm still surprised it's taken me so long to find and try this place. If you're looking for a great sandwich with quality ingredients, Jack's is your spot for sure. I ordered the Chicken Parm sandwich and really really enjoyed it (Not my best work in terms of the photo lol - trust me though, the sandwich was amazing). I love a good seeded roll and this one was absolutely delicious - there's nothing like a quality roll. The only thing that would have made it better was more sauce, but that was my fault for not specifying when ordering. Can't wait to go back!

This was a solid local spot with both hot and cold subs. I really enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana hot sub. The eggplant was thin but had a nice crunchy breading. I was so excited to order the Italian - it's my go to cold sub wherever I go. I was disappointed to find the original Italian had an olive with feta cheese tapenade spread which I was pretty upset to find since I hate olives. It is the one food I cannot stomach. I really wanted to love it!! The sesame bread was so good and I wanted to enjoy the sandwich. I would go back and ask for the Italian without the olive spread. They had some little containers with samples of the apple crumble cake and I was blown away by it. The cake definitely tasted fresh and recently baked since the bread was very fluffy. I would go back and order the cake if I was craving something sweet.

This could have been a lot better. Having the best hoagie in the free world I hoagie up'd my cheesesteak with peppers. I like the price. The meat on my cheesesteak was dry. It needed more cheese. it was oily. I got a hoagie. I liked it. Quality over amount.

We ordered two Philly cheesesteak and one chicken cheesesteak. We were asked if we wanted "fried onions" and well it the same as grilled onions and not like an onion ring, just FYI. The chicken did not have much flavor but adding the peppers they give you it adds some and my mom enjoyed it. The cheesesteak was good too but also the steak was a bit flavorless. The sandwich is big and you need to ask to be cut in half, they just give it to you whole. It gets busy and they only accept cash. They do have an ATM machine on site if needed. Parking is on the street and not bathroom that I saw. This would be a place I come back but I'll bring some salt and pepper with me.

The hype seems real and I did really enjoy it. The freshly baked roll with sesame seeds was also nice and really held the sandwich together. They are takeout only so we walked over to the nearby Cianfrani Park and there were lots of benches in the shade to enjoy. If I had one complaint it's just that the prices there are a little expensive overall. This was the most expensive cheese steak that I've gotten so far during my trip. It came out to $21.33 for just the cheese steak. I would definitely come back here again for another cheese steak if I'm ever in Philadelphia.

John's Roast Pork is legendary in Philly - it's been around for decades - 96 years to be exact! I'd been there once before many years ago (couldn't remember anything about it) and thought it was time for a revisit. I got the large Roast Pork sandwich - you can see from the attached picture the 'preferred toppings' (Dad's Way) are: Mustard Raw onions Hot seeded pepper American cheese I had only the Mild Provolone cheese on mine - no mustard, raw onions or seeded pepper. I would have had cooked (caramelized) onions - but they had only raw...and American cheese was not a choice for me (I was raised on it). The pork is supposed to be 'slow roasted (7 hours) pork shoulder (pork butt)' - and it may very well be, but it reminds me of the meat that's carved off the large vertical rotisseries for gyros. It doesn't look that appealing - it's like a large sub sandwich. The pork was soft, tender and seasoned well - the roll was very good - John's had been getting its bread from Carangi Bakery. However, the bakery closed due to a fire so I'm not sure where the bread is from, unless it reopened. I finally satisfied my curiosity about John's and went to see what the sandwich was like. While it probably ranks as one of the better 'pork/steak' sandwiches in Philly, I just couldn't get excited about it.

The cashier was patient and ensured that my order was correct by asking and repeating back the entire order. That...I loved & appreciated! What I didn't like is the answer she gave me when I asked if it was okay that my family grabbed an open table while I ordered food. She said, "No, you have to order food first. Once your order is placed, then you can look for an empty table". Once a table was secured and cleaned, we waited for our order. Man, it didn't disappoint. We ordered 2 French onion burgers, oh lamb Mediterranean burger, garlic and parmesan fries, and a Philly cheesesteak with grilled onions and bell peppers topped with provolone cheese. Everything was carefully prepared and delicious. I mean the burgers were enjoyed and loved by two tweens. They loved the dip that came on the side and dipped fries and their burgers in it. The Mediterranean burger was spicy and jam packed with seasoning. As for the Philly cheesesteak, Listen!!!!! Get it. The meat was tender, hero was soft (I preferred more of a toast bun) but it was fresh, and the CHEESE stole the show. Why was the cheese so thick and just stringy?! I topped it with Heinz ketchup packets. Yes, you read that right.....packets! Two of 'em did the trick. Would I go back, absolutely! Would I scout a table first, totally!!!! If you're thinking about going to Oh Brother, don't hesitate!

I was in…read moreChester for a football game, but made some time to stop by both of the city's famous Cheesesteak stands. The Original Pat's King of Steaks is located in South Philly, specifically in the Passyunk Square neighborhood. It sits at the intersection of East Passyunk, South 9th, and Wharton. The building has many different signs and lights that will let you know that you are in the correct place. Since this is in the city, parking can be somewhat tricky. There are times I have had to circle around, or get whomever I was with to drop me off and have them come back. However, sometimes I have secured street parking not too far away. This will just depend on the time of day, and really the luck of the draw, if you are able to easily locate parking. This is an outdoor stand, meaning there is no inside to enter. You will order at the counter, and food is packaged to-go. However, there are some tables surrounding the building that you can dine at. They are all under the roof overhang, so you will be somewhat protected from the elements. On this day, it was not terribly busy. I really did not have to wait in any kind of line before being able to place my order. This was around 4:00 on a Saturday in September. First, I took some time to look over the menu posted near the sidewalk. There is also a helpful guide on "how to order a steak," for those that are unfamiliar. When it was my first time here, I actually found the humorous display very helpful. I placed my order for two classic Cheesesteak Wit, made with Cheez Whiz. When ordering, you specify if you want Wit (with onion) or Wit-Out (no onion). Given that I was wanting to try the most authentic sandwich I could, I opted for the onions and the traditional Cheez Whiz. My sandwiches only took a minute or so to be ready. As stated, it was not busy, and they are able to whip up these sandwiches rather quickly. I ended up taking my sandwiches to-go, and having them for meals the next few days. They reheat well, and have good flavor. I like having the onions on it for an added texture. Pricing is not terrible. Pat's is more expensive than Geno's by $2 for the same sandwich. My total was $36 after tax for the two sandwiches, making them $18 each. You definitely are paying for the experience and the novelty that is coming to this famous corner of Philadelphia. But, this price is not out of the ballpark of other places in the area. The sandwich is a decent size, and you can definitely get two meals out of it if you are eating it by yourself. So, all that considering, it is a fair value for what you pay. It seemed like most menu items were $20 or under. FYI, they take both cash and card. The staff are quick and efficient. However, it will not be the most friendly or pleasant experience, especially if you do not know how to order. I am not saying that the experience was poor by any means, but be aware that this is not Disney World and they will not be overly kind to you at the order window. Being from Pittsburgh, I had never had a true Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich until a few years ago when I visited for the first time. Since that trip, I typically make it a point to stop and get a few sandwiches to take back home with me. I enjoy coming to Pat's for the atmosphere, and the true taste of Philadelphia. I recommend giving it a try at least once, just to say you have had it. Plus, the sandwiches are pretty tasty, too. I will definitely be back here on future trips to South Philly.
