I was looking for a nice non-chain sit-down restaurant when I drive passed Jack's. It looked inviting, and claimed to have the best steaks in south Texas. The restaurant was clean, and the staff was nice; however, I'm sorry to report Jack's does NOT have the best steaks in south Texas. I ordered the 10 Oz sirloin medium rare, but it was medium well at best. The cut and the seasoning were nothing to write home about either. I ordered a sweet potato for my side, and was given half a potato, which was very odd to me. It was an underwhelming meal. Ordered a filet, baked potato with a salad and a glass of Pinot Noir. The dinner was great. One concern that I have is concerning the metal pin they use to secure the bacon strip to the filet. If you order the filet which was very good be sure to remove the metal pin holding the bacon strip to the steak. Jack's is ok. I believe it's owned by the same family that owns Town House across the street. I stopped in for a bite yesterday. I just had a burger. It was delicious. Unfortunately, they will only cook burgers--ground beef--medium week or well done. That seemed strange to me as I usually order medium, but what can you do. It tasted fine. Their "pile" of fries was like 10. That's just terribad. They don't have any beer on draft which sucks as well. And the bottles they do have are your standard fare for Texas: bud, Miller, shiner, dos Equis, corona, etc. The server was friendly and prompt, though we did have to wait a bit for our initial drink order. There was hardly anyone in there on a Friday night so I doubt that waiting in line would be a problem on the weekend. Overall, a decent place to go if you're in Uvalde. read more

Jack's steak house is my first dining choice when I travel to Uvalde. I normally order the salmon with steamed green beans. Sometimes I order a steak or just appetizers. Every time I come to this restaurant it gets a little worse. I came here two years ago and had a great chicken fried steak, but not anymore. I brought my staff here for a "going away" party for one of my employee's. The food ranged from "okay" to "it made me sick as a dog". On top of that, we had to wait almost an hour for bad food. One employee had chicken alfredo and there were three different kinds of pasta in it. Who does that? Three of us had chicken fried steaks, two were over cooked and one was under cooked. The one that was under cooked made my employee so sick he missed work the next day. I will never eat here again. read more

This was my 2nd time to stop in at Jack's, this time I put in a to go order. It was really good, my steak was cooked as ordered, my baked sweet potato was perfectly cooked and still hot when I got to my hotel room. Do not let outer appearance fool you, it's a quaint little restaurant that cooks steaks to perfection and everyone is very friendly. I would say this place has a fairly vast menu. Not a bad selection for the kids as well. We had a wide range of selections. New York strip, fried shrimp, and catfish. My honest opinion of all of them was just average. The dinner salads were fresh and we all liked the dressings. The fresh bread was nice a swell. The server was polite and courteous. Just came back from a nice dinner with my husband at Jack's Steak house; I just could not wait to give this place a sterling review. We walked in and were promptly and politely greeted by two ladies and one showed us to our seats, immediately asking us what'd we like to drink. Our drinks were brought out quickly and we were asked if we knew of any appetizers we'd like to dine on, other than the complimentary bread. We decided to decline, since nothing really popped out at us that we were in the mood for. (Perhaps our next visit we'll give one a try.) After pouring over the rather large menu we both decided on getting steaks. I opted for the Jack's 10 oz Sirloin with a baked potato and a side of grilled shrimp. The husband ordered a 14 oz Sirloin, a baked potato without sour cream, and macaroni and cheese. He opted for medium rare and I opted for well done (would have ordered medium rare as well but being with child has barred me from this choice.) As we waited our delightful waitress brought us out a small loaf of bread with both regular butter and honey whipped butter. Though the exterior crust was extremely crunchy, the bread was warm and delicious. I only wish we could have gotten another loaf while we waited. I would estimate we waited about 20 minutes, which compared to other restaurants in the area, is extremely speedy. First off the baked potatoes were huge! They were much bigger than I was anticipating. I might also note that my sour cream was served on the side, which I think is a nice touch for those who aren't overly fond of the stuff like my husband. Both steaks sat in a nice puddle of their own juices and topped with a very tasty seasoned butter. My shrimps were delicate in flavor; spritzed with a hint of lime. The only weak link on our plates was the mac and cheese, which tasted like something you'd get from a box and lacked any sort of seasoning and was made with a weak cheese. But the rest of our plates made up for the macaroni! The steaks were cooked to perfection, and were hefty in size. I'm assuming the cuts they use are a little over than what they're listed as. My husband didn't manage to finish his baked potato due to the sheer size of everything and I didn't even manage to finish of my steak in one sitting. Also, I might note that our server was completely attentive our entire experience. She brought refills before they were needed and checked on our dining experience frequently, asking if we needed anything, making sure the steaks were prepared properly, and inquiring about our overall satisfaction. The price for our two person dinner was just under $50; though we would have not been surprised if it was more due how delicious our meal was. As for the ambiance of the restaurant, it is very rustic with a few neon signs strewn about. But it shouldn't deter anyone from venturing inside to give what they offer a taste. I'm not exactly sure if Jacks is worth 2 stars total, but their ribeye and fresh baked bread is always a good choice and for that reason I give this place a 2 star rating. The sides could definitely use some help, their beef soup is atrocious and id recommend getting the baked potato and okra. The spanish rice and beans turned my husband's stomach, if you get my drift. The service, particularly the front of the house is in need of intervention. We waited nearly 15 minutes to be seated in a 3/4 empty restaurant with nearly 5 waiters running around every where. It's pretty typical to wait to be seated every time we go in, so patience is key. It's a hit or miss kind of place with consistency completely out of Jacks vocabulary--sometimes the steaks are cooked to perfection, others they over/under cook it. Found myself in Uvalde, TX shooting a commercial out at the Proving Grounds. Politely greeted when I walked in. The service was AWESOME!. Unfortunately I didn't catch her name. ( If it helps management: we ate there on 11/4/2014 around 8:30pm and promised her I would write a yelp review). Meal came out in 15min if that. I had the chicken avocado club. Chicken was cooked perfect, and the avocado was fresh as it could be, and the bun it comes on, holly crap it was awesome. My coworkers had a steak and the other a salmon club. I guess this meal was about what one would expect from a steakhouse in Uvalde, TX... Just meh. -The server was a nice young kid that failed to comprehend what it means to be a 'server'. He can to our table on a fairly regular basis, but we had to ask for refills and empty plates to be cleared. -The onion rings were so thickly cut you couldn't bite thru or cut them with the provided butter knife. We pretty much wound up picking the crust off and dipping it in ranch. -The side salad was decent, BUT it was 50% half-bad iceberg with half a pound of pre-packaged croutons. The ranch was great, definitely home made. -The chicken fettuccine Alfredo was practically inedible. The chicken was chargrilled, and the sauce took on that horrible burnt ashy flavor once it was added to the dish. -The 'special' 10oz ribeye was a complete joke. It was a HORRIBLE cut, uneven with absolutely no marbling. It was cooked unevenly and LOADED with garlic butter to the point that the whole plate had a 1/2" thick layer of butter on it. I really want to like this place. I love their chicken avocado bacon sandwich ....its amazing!!! Love the bread ... But please tell me if anyone is having the same problem as me. I've ordered the shrimp there before the Plate of shrimp it's $15 they put a lot of shrimp on it unlike other places but my problem is I ordered it once in a hand like this really badd really really badd like iodine flavor... II got sick afterwards not right away maybe 30 minutes to an hour after I ate but I wasn't sure if it was the shrimp or ifit was just me... To be honest I stayed away from the shrimp there are few months... Until last night... There's not many places here in Uvalde and Jack's really isn't that Bad the servers are so nice and I wanted to give the shrimp a second chance... Well we went in 30 minutes before the closed ordered the chicken sandwich the usual for someone else because it's so good I wanted them to try it... And I ordered a shrimp for myself we were told that they just change the oil so that was even better... The Shrimp did have the same flavor but just not as Bad I just put extra lemon on it still good taste It but not as badd... After a nice long cruise through the Twisted Sisters, we settled in Uvalde and found Jack's Steak House. There was plenty of parking for our big group of about 14 cars and they even gave us one of the private rooms for our big group. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating, given we were a huge group that came in without even a heads up. The restaurant itself is large, spacious, and has a rustic feel to it. The menu has a variety of food from soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and "favorites" platters. There is something for everyone. The food didn't even take that long to come out after we all ordered. However, here's where I have to start dinging them on stars. First of all, I ordered the Avocado Chicken Club sandwich with a side of onion rings. When I received my order, everything was a really good portion size except the chicken itself. I got a very small piece of grilled chicken breast that only fit on half of my sandwich (you can see the pictures for yourself). I even put it together and cut it in half and sure enough, half of my sandwich was all veggies. I didn't realize the waitress was behind me when I made the comment that "WOW, look how small that chicken breast is, it's only enough for half my sandwich", to which she immediately replied, "Oh no! Let me go and make sure you get another piece of chicken." Although I was surprised she heard me, i'm glad she took the initiative to resolve the issue. She even saw for herself and had a shocked look on her face. Taste-wise the sandwich was great, as were the onion rings, although I was hoping for more of the onion rings as well. My friends at the table were not as satisfied with their orders. One person ordered his steak medium rare and it came out medium well. Another ordered it medium and got it well done. Another got the wrong order completely. Needless to say, where Jack's lacked in food quality, they made up for in customer service. Personally I thought my chicken sandwich was delicious, and was even more satisfied when the other half of my chicken arrived. I understand that we were an unusually large party, and they did have great customer service, so I can understand some of the incorrect orders, but i'm still thinking of that little piece of chicken I got on my big ole sandwich. read more
