I've been to Jacob's Pickles many times and I really love it. Let's first discuss pros and then the cons (good news should always come first). Pros: The food is awesome. Like really awesome even though you may feel like you gained fifty pounds over the course of the one meal. It's worth it. I've tried many dishes including the catfish tacos, pork belly mussels (delicious), a few of the biscuit sandwiches - my favorites are the mushroom gravy and the fried chicken with honey. But my all time #1 dish at JP is the fried chicken and pancakes. Seriously, don't miss out on the amazingness of this dish. The fried chicken is excellent and so are the huge, fluffy pancakes. But wow just wow to the maple syrup. It makes the dish. They add spices to it so it tastes like heaven and christmas in a jar being poured all over your pancakes. Trust me on this one and just get it. The cocktails and beer selection is also a huge pro. Very very tasty and the bartenders are quite nice. Cons: the wait. Many, many times I've been told the table would take 30 minutes or so. It doesn't. It just never does. Even this past Sunday night at 9 pm we waited 45 minutes. And that was partially because the staff up front forgot about us. So that's an issue. Additionally, they play rap music very loud so it's almost impossible to have a real conversation. Space is also a problem as the tables are very cramped. All in all though, the food and cocktails are a must when venturing to the UWS. read more

Biscuits, fried chicken, grits, collard greens, Mac n cheese, sweet tea, etc. Chicken is fried to a great crisp while being juicy on the inside, biscuits are fluffy, buttery and tasty, sweet tea is so good you'll need a refill every 5 minutes, and mac n cheese is top notch; right out the oven and served to you! For the portions you receive, this is by far one of my top spots when it comes to prices. You will need a box when you leave. I haven't seen many people finish their plates. Prices range from $15-$23. Also, make sure when you're there get the fried pickles of course and candy red beets! Con - Based on food, Jacob's is a 5, however the atmosphere is very dark. Saturday, August 21st around 1:30 pm I decided to visit Jacob's Pickles since I heard about the biscuits. Once they checked my vaccination ID card, I was shown to an indoor dining seat, surrounded by a very animated crowd. My selection came from the starters menu. I asked my server Caroline what would she suggest since I couldn't make up my mind between the bacon egg & cheese biscuit sandwich, yet I wanted to try the devil eggs and biscuits. I didn't want chicken because I was going to have it for dinner. Well I ordered the devil eggs which had a nice presentation. You could taste the pickled mustard seed within the smoothness of the yolk. I also choose the plain and lemon blueberry biscuits that came with the house strawberry & orange preserves, clover honey, salted butter and maple butter. The biscuits are oversized and square, nice touch. I tried every single fixins and my favorite was the strawberry & especially the orange preserve on the plain biscuit. Jacob's Pickles is solidly one of my favorite restaurants in the city. It starts with the laid back, simple yet refined look of the spot. Not everyone likes communal tables, but there are plenty of non-communal tables. I love the exposed brick. Our waiters and waitresses have always been really nice. Overly attentive but not in the obnoxious way. Great drink selection. I've gotten the NY beer flight, the rosemary lemonade, and excellent wines. Don't be afraid to ask for a recommendation, as there's a lot to choose from, and the people who work here know their stuff. And the food -- well, they make healthy salads unhealthy, but everything is delicious. I've had Jacob's Pickles on my list for a very long time, and i finally had the opportunity to get take out. Although they had outdoor seating with heaters, it was too cold and we were on our way to Connecticut. We definitely ordered too much for 2 ppl, but no regrets. Biscuits and Fixins: the biscuits were perfect and it came with so many different types of spreads such as honey butter (my fave), honey, butter, marmalade, jam, etc. I really liked it but I wouldn't order it again if I'm getting a meal bc it came with biscuits and it was way too much and I felt very wasteful not being able to finish it. Honey Chicken and Pickles: chicken was super crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. There were lots of sweet pickles which I loved and some hot peppers which gave it a kick. Mushroom Gravy Smothered Chicken: this was amazing. They did not skimp out on the mushroom or gravy and every bite was so delicious. The sandwiches came with grits which I'm not a fan of. Wish they could substitute with another side. I ordered a small Buffalo Mac and cheese. I didn't realize this wasn't a side and an actual meal. Oops. It was cooked with penne and lots of chunky pieces of chicken but def wasn't my favorite. I was a bit annoyed because it was restaurant week, but the options weren't showing up and so we ended up ordering from actual menu. However, food was amazing so it made up for it. I scoped out the menu and could not be more excited for Wednesday to roll around. We arrived a little before 8:30 and the place was a mad house. My friend gave her name and cell phone number so they could text us in about half an hour when our table would be ready. The half an hour went so quickly and we were seated right away near the door and packed bar area. Our waitress was sweet and kept coming up to check on us. For drinks 2 decided on the special root beer and one decided on the half tea half lemonade. I only tried the lemonade and it was quite tart but very refreshing. We started with the biscuits and fixins. 2 huge fluffy biscuits with maple butter, regular butter, strawberry jam, orange jam, and honey. Oh my goodness I was in heaven. Half a biscuit was the perfect amount. The maple butter was addicting but I'm a purist when it comes to biscuits. Butter and honey it was for me! My fiancé poured out some orange jam and found a seed! Actually a good sign proving it was fresh made. For entrees we opted for even more biscuits! 3 of us had the sausage gravy smothered chicken biscuit and my fiancé had the pickle smothered honey chicken biscuit. Holy smokes the smothered chicken was good. I could only eat about 5 bites after the starter but it was so delicious. And the house made hot sauce was so addicting. My fiancé loved his! Coffee was strong and good. Had a taste of my friend's burger and pickles and they were both delish. Enjoyed alfresco seating, though the inside is charming, decorated in French country style, or maybe southern country since this is a southern place. I've been wanting to come here for the last two years. Then, all of a sudden, their account kept flooding my IG so I "@" my #FoodBae and said "let's go this week!" We went for "linner" this past Monday. The dining room was dimly lit but not crowded. The music was groovy and not too loud. I was quickly greeted and seated at a 2-top across from the bar. I chose the seat against the mirrored wall. My immediate view was the a$$ crack (think plumbers butt) of a gentleman seated at the bar...but whatever (no pun intended). I immediately order a drink and a flight of pickled cukes and veggies. #FoodBae showed up shortly after and we placed our food orders: chicken with mushroom gravy for me and chicken with sausage gravy for her. Food arrived quickly, which was awesome. Huge portions. HUGE! I'm just gonna cut to the chase and say that I didn't finish my food. Not because the portion was too plentiful, but because it just wasn't tasty. After 2 bites, I scraped all the gravy and melted cheese off the top of the chicken. (That's me trying to salvage a $17 plate of chicken and gravy with cheese on top). Needless to say, it didn't help. I asked our server for hot sauce, which she promptly provided. It was actually sriracha (info servers aren't supposed to divulge, as she told me), and it didn't help the taste at all. Yes y'all, the chicken was tasteless. TASTE-LESS. As in, free of taste. Upon entering the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was the obnoxiously loud music. After a while, my ears got adjusted to it so it didn't bother me as much. It took us some time to flag down a waitress to take our order but once we did, she was super friendly. Between the four of us, we shared 4 entrées and a side of the pickled green beans. The portions were huge and we had plenty of leftovers. I think three dishes would have sufficed. I really wanted to like this place but was sorely disappointed. We had reservations and only had to wait a few minutes for our table. The restaurant was packed at 1:30 on a Monday afternoon. Service was mediocre at best and when our server came to our table she just asked to take our order and seemed put off when we asked for her recommendation from the menu. Being from Texas, we know and love good southern food and always like to take the suggestions for the staff but our server was not helpful or friendly. We started with the pickle sampler and when it finally arrived we found a long black hair in the pickles. We have blonde hair so it clearly wasn't ours and it was stuffed in the jar. Our server replaced it and brought a new order that took about 20 minutes to replace. She mentioned that this had happened 3 times already that day. I finally lost my appetite when we found another black hair in our pickled carrots which is pictured below. We shared the biscuit with fried green tomatoes which was good but nothing special. The grits tasted instant. I did not receive the drink that I ordered but again, our server was never around to fix the issue. When the bill came they handed me a tablet and waited for me to sign it glaring over my shoulder. I'm disappointed that they included $30 of pickles with hair on the bill that they eventually comped but wanted me to tip on. Overall I question how clean their kitchen is and it tainted our entire experience along with the poor service at a premium price. I thought everything was really good! You get so much food and it is really good. My boyfriend and I went kind of crazy and wanted to try everything. We got regular pickles (yum!) and fried pickles (also yum). He orders a beer float (I wasn't the biggest fan but he liked it). For the meal I got the BBQ jack chicken sandwich. So yummy! It comes on a biscuit, the BBQ was great (I don't usually like BBQ all that much but this was kind of light and tasty). It had way too much cheese on it for me but my boyfriend ate what I couldn't. It was also easy to take off any cheese I didn't want. It also came with cheese grits -pretty decent (I usually like my grits with a little butter and a little salt) but these were definitely tasty. For dessert we got the fried Oreos-yum! I missed those things. The service was good! But the wait!...oh man-it was pretty long. But the great thing was they had a great system where they text you within 10 minutes of your table being ready and ask if you want to hold your spot or not. This was great. We were able to walk around the UWS until our table was ready. Great place to take a friend from another country!!! I'm happy to recommend this place to anyone, even if more "soul" food style ain't your style. Basically everything about this place was top notch. Food was delicious, huge portions, and amazing prices!!! I got their fried chicken on a biscuit with an egg, cheese, and their picnic sauce which was like a 1000 island dressing. I also smothered it in syrup cause why not?! It came with possibly the best cheese polenta I've had! Also got their delicious fried pickles and the largest deviled eggs I've ever had! Its hard not to expect a glorious experience - maybe even get expectations a tad too high - when a menu has magical offers such as "add bacon to any beer for $2" - but even the high hopes and expectations this created were an easy hurdle for Jacob to blow past. The pickle plate starter was excellent (the beets were a particular standout, I thought). We also got fried pickles (maybe the only misstep - came out scalding hot, and composed a bit too bready/greasy for my taste) and biscuits (somehow rich yet somewhat light). The Southern BLT was enjoyable, and the cheese grits that came with the sandwich superb. My friend greatly enjoyed her burger. The Bloody BLT - a spicy bloody mary garnished with a huge slab of bacon, a pickled hard-boiled egg and a huge sprig of romaine - was just one of the finest drinking experiences I can remember. Looked like a great beer list and amazing dessert options, although I got wait too full on appetizers, biscuits, drinks and dinner to indulge. Jacob's Pickles is hands down my favorite restaurant on the Upper West Side, and now that my latest experience here is fresh in my mind, I figured it was time to write a review. Though I didn't order drinks on this particular occasion, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite cocktail north of midtown: THE BROOKLYN GIN. This baby does all the right things. Ingredients: lime infused Dorthy Parker Gin, chili infused Perry's Tot NS gin, fresh squeezed limeade, orange bittermens, Brooklyn bitters, and organic cane syrup. This drink turned me onto spicy cocktails. But be wanred: these are STRONG. Danger: sloppiness ahead (I speak from one amateur experience). Enter at your own risk. But onto the main event: Pickles!!!! Now like a good Jew, I love me some pickles. And wouldn't you know it? Jacob's Pickles, indeed, serves pickles! I'm pretty sure I've tried every kind here, and they're all delicious. Highlights for me are the Hot Sours (moderately spicy) and the Big Dill Koshers. Honorable mention goes to the Dilly Green Beans. That said, if you're not into vinegar, steer clear of those and just stick with the pickles. Food that I can speak to: -Spiced Shrimp and Green Market Kale Salad: vanilla bean roasted sweet potatoes and mushrooms, fava beans, radishes and peppers in a honey dijon vinaigrette with shrimp -Catfish Tacos: Farm raised catfish, lime crema, cilantro slaw, cebollines w/ fresh lime and kosher salt -Black Peppercorn Seared Salmon: Shitake and King Oyster Mushroom Gratin -Honey Chicken and Pickles biscuit sandwich: Buttermilk fried chicken, hot sours, clover honey Well, this completely depends on what you're in the mood for. These meals are all incredible. If you're looking for something lighter, go for the salad or fish tacos. Something heavier and very savory, I'd go with the salmon. If you want good ole southern comfort, the biscuit sandwich is the obvious choice. This place is known for its biscuit sandwiches, so I suppose if you're looking to go authentic, the last option is best. I can speak highly of all of them though! Lastly, ambiance/service: My only issue with this place is the lighting. It is very, very dark. Yes, they have small candles on every table, but that only does so much. Reading the menu can be a bit of an onus, but it's one small drawback of this place. The service is great, the staff is personable, all positive there. The lighting is just quite dim. I also think it's important to mention the wait. On any given night, it can be anywhere from a 20 minute to an hour wait (worse on weekends, not surprisingly). There's an adequate strip of bars on Amsterdam that you can grab a drink at before (or you can go inside and stand at the bar), but just be prepared to wait. No reservations, sadly. read more

This place is one of my favorite brunch spots in New York City! What I love about this place is that they are extremely generous when it comes to the portions they give you. So even though the price can be a little steep for some dishes, it's enough to feed two people, maybe even three. Whenever I am in the upper West side, I try to visit this place, because the food is that good. I came here earlier this week with my mom, and this was the first time we actually ate at this location. We would have the food from here but at their sister location Maison Pickle during the time they were under construction. It was nice to see that their food tasted the same, if not better. I ordered the Croquet Madame, which was not only epic but one hell of an amazing sandwich! Overall the food is amazing, as well as the service. Ella was a great waiter, very knowledgeable and super efficient. And another thing about this place that's amazing is how fast your food comes. We placed our order appetizers and entrees and literally everything came out in five minutes! I kid you not, it was amazing! I can't wait to come back here! Also I recommend the bread pudding it's heaven! The only down side, is that we found hair in our food a couple of times. :( Once in the restaurant and then again at home and another dish. I just hope the chefs are wearing hairnets or start wearing them cause that's not good. But overall still a great place with great vibes! read more

I've been wanting to come here for so long and just finally got the chance a couple days ago. Came here after walking my friend Mike's dog. I figured since I'm rarely on the west side, might as well take the chance to try this place. Even though I grew up in the South, I'm not a frequent eater of Southern food, mostly because I'm no longer 22 and as it turns out, eating platefuls of butter isn't great for you. However, when I do eat it, I want it done right and that's how they do them here at Jacob's pickles. We got the deviled eggs and honey chicken and pickles. For drinks, I had a local Bronx Pilsner and Julie L. had the Jam Jar. The Jam Jar was a very fun and refreshing drink, a sure favorite for strawberry lovers. The deviled eggs came with an insane amount of yolk. Each half egg had about 3 eggs worth of yolk piled on top. Each order came with 5. The flavors were spot on, a bit tangy and just salty enough. I probably should have just eaten one and saved the rest but we ended up cleaning the plate. The honey chicken and pickles came with crispy fried chicken slathered in honey, piled atop two fluffy biscuits (cornbread?) and topped with a mound of pickles. The meat was juicy despite it being white meat. The pickles lived up to the namesake of this place, giving perfect reprieve to the heavier components of this dish. The side of grits that came with the dish was great in that it wasn't overly buttery but it did have some lumps in it. The prices here were very reasonable, most being $10-20, and especially when you consider that their portion sizes are huge for Manhattan standards. These are true Southern sized dishes. There is outdoor seating which is very nice now that the weather is cooling down. This place gives you great food and lots of it.
