Had a lovely breakfast at Old John's! Such a cozy diner perfect for that rainy morning - friends and I split the Leo omelette, french toast, and chilaquiles verde. I believe we had the Brooklyn (?) french toast, which (despite being soaked in the syrup) wasn't overly sweet, so it was the perfect balance with the other savory dishes. I'm not a big lox person so the Leo was alright for me; the overall consensus was that the cream was a little too heavy for us. We did really like the latke that came with it though, reminiscent of a hashbrown. The chilaquiles was absolutely delectable with the acidity of the salsa verde + pickled red onions and avocado. It was a busy Sunday morning, but the service was still pretty good - overall had a great experience, the only downside was my umbrella did get stolen at the front though so be mindful? They also have such a mouthwatering selection of desserts as well, so I'll have to drop by for a slice next time! read more

Love this Diner - great atmosphere and they usually play cool vintage music or Jazz. Very nice design and great booths or counter seating. Burgers and Sandwiches consistently excellent along with great Salmon dish. Very reasonable prices and they are open late until 11pm which is rare in that area. We stopped by on the way to the movies and overall, really good, comforting food! Ordered the Chicken Pot Pie (crust was very nice) and the Pot Roast (meat was tender and the flavors well complemented by the carrots and potatoes). Also ordered a Last Word cocktail, good and strong. 100% get a reservation, you can walk in but it's mostly going to be for bar seating. Very busy inside so even that can be a gamble. Also super cute, we liked the flooring and the overall aesthetic. No complaints on the service. Feels like this will be a place we revisit the next time we're headed to the theater. read more

Went to Old John's late night hoping for dessert and coffee. We ended up just having coffee since they didn't have any kind of fruit plate, and I wasn't in the mood for cake. I was also surprised that they close earlier than expected -- they're not open until midnight on the weekends, so just something to keep in mind. On a positive note, I loved the staff's hats (even told our waiter how great his was!), but unfortunately they were sold out when I asked about getting one. read more

This place is always busy and sometimes hard to get a table. The service is quick though. The ambiance is more of a nicer diner feel and the layout is a narrow horseshoe shape. They have traditional diner menu items without the diner bible you would normally receive. Their sandwiches come with soup and a pickle. I got quite a tasty and perfectly grilled tuna melt and a lentil soup. The lentil was giving much more minestrone than lentil which was just not for me. This is a great option in the neighrborhood to pop in for a quick bite and not pay a ton of money. read more

Nice neighborhood place, good service, but this is not a true diner - except for the pickles. The chix soup was okay and tasted homemade. The tuna melt was not a melt. It is served on nicely grilled challah and the tuna has nice flavor but it was cold. No melted cheese, not a melt. I complained and the waitress immediately took it back. I overheard her explaining to the cook that I wanted a hot sandwich with melted cheese, so I assume the cheese is usually cold. I think he microwaved it and the cheese melted and so it was okay. In a world of restaurants that make you feel like they want you in and out as quickly as possible and feel as if you're an inconvenience, Old John's Diner has the opposite atmosphere. They make you feel welcome, almost like being invited into someone's home. It feels like you can enjoy a meal and conversation without being rushed out of your seat. The atmosphere is nostalgic in a genuine way rather than replication, with tile floors, nylon booths, and a counter in the middle where you can enjoy a milkshake or egg cream. Their homemade ice cream was so pleasantly surprising (the mint tastes like REAL mint leaves and not mint extract.) We were asked if it was our first time dining there and when we admitted it was, they offered our dessert for free. So often in the dining industry you feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed for everything and here, it felt like the staff wanted their customers to have a good experience. Plus I gotta mention that the prices are really good for the location. This place will definitely be a go-to when we're in the neighbourhood. read more

Not sure how the food is at this place because we haven't gotten to eat here. We came in on a Sunday around early dinner time. The place was packed, the hostess said it will be about 45 minute wait since we didn't have reservations. When we asked if we can leave our phone number so they can text when they have a table ready they said they don't take phone numbers and we will just have to wait. There is no place to wait inside and it was raining outside. When we mentioned the fact it was raining and asked if they can make an exception to text us so we can wait somewhere inside nearby , the hostess said she'll talk to the manager and after she did, she agreed to take our phone number. I had to stop here for lunch since my name is John and I'm old. 61, so not that old, but old enough. The place was very busy on Friday around 12:15 PM. I waited about 15 minutes for a table and was then seated near the door to the bathrooms (and kitchen, I presume). The food and service were great. My only bit of constructive criticism would be for the servers to try to be a little quieter when bussing tables. The spot where they dumped all of the dirty dishes after clearing a table was only a few feet from where I was sitting, and it was terribly loud and distracting. I ate so fast that my server even commented on how quickly I finished. I just wanted to get out of there because the crashing of plates and silverware was really getting to me. I would definitely go back, but next time I'd sit on the other side of the restaurant or at the counter. read more

Old John's was just fine. If I could, I would drop 3.5 stars. We were able to sit without a reservation which was nice. Other than that the food was ok. The Mozzarella were a bit bland and only came four to an order which seems smaller than most places. The burger was pretty good - a but undercooked but I ate it fine enough. It was a very busy atmosphere but I didn't feel too rushed. I'd be happy to eat there again if I needed to but I'm not rushing back. read more

I really enjoyed Old John's Diner. It was recommended by an acquaintance of mine who raved about it. We walked in early on a Saturday morning and had no issues getting seated, but I have walked by this place before and seen a long line. It's one of the few places I've visited in NYC that truly reproduces old school diner vibes. The seats are a little cramped, but this does add to the aesthetic. The food was delicious - we tried the bagel + gravlax, corned beef hash, and stuffed french toast. The corned beef hash was my favorite, but the french toast was also excellent and was not-too-sweet. I felt like the prices were a little steep for the amount of food we got (which is usually not the case with these types of diners), but that didn't come as a huge surprise given the area we're in. OMG the food here is great. I ordered the roast chicken. It was perfection. Crispy skin, great seasoning, obviously cooked "under a brick" and the sauce was absolutely delicious, singing with vegetables. My son got the salmon and said it was fabulous with a wonderful sauce. What other diner takes this kind of care with their sauces? Writing home about this one (wait I am home!). I have only lived in NY several weeks and this is the fourth diner I've been to. This is a review for breakfast experience on a weekday morning recently. On the positive side, I love an old-school diner place like this. The ambience is great. It's cute, clean and fun. There was fun music playing while I was there, but not too loud (thank you!). The server was friendly and on it. All of that was much appreciated. I ordered the basic buttermilk pancakes -- the most basic thing a diner can serve for breakfast. And I'm not super picky. But these pancakes were very dry and had no taste. Just so dry and bland. It was like eating a crumbly dry muffin with no flavor. I had butter and syrup, and the butter had no flavor either. I even tasted it separately just to make sure I wasn't crazy, because butter usually improves everything. But the butter I was given was some sort of fake vegetable oil-based "butter" product that had no flavor. These pancakes were very disappointing. The one thing a diner needs to make well is pancakes. My suggestion is to get a better more tasty and moist recipe and use real butter. I was happy that they served legit fresh squeezed orange juice, though. But the pancakes were enough to keep me away. We spent the day on the Upper West Side and were so glad that we found this spot to try. The orange espresso was so unique and delicious, and the food did not disappoint. The look of this place feels like stepping back in time with a little bit of elevation. Service is quick, but we did feel rushed by the wait staff even when we were still trying to finish our food. unfortunately for all of society, most diners in Manhattan won't have diner prices - however the vibe of a diner persists! loved the yellow booths, classic menu options, and steaming hot coffee at the well decorated Lincoln Center spot - our food came out fast even with a party of 7. the pancakes were fluffy and light and they did not hold back on the blueberries. however their lack of specialness did not match the price tag ($17) nor did they have that huge dinner pancake size that would have maybe justified that tag - I was pleasantly surprised by the lox sandwich on a pillowy brioche. they put on a fat slab of cream cheese atop of crunchy onions, spongey eggs, and a decent serving of lox. the tomato was cut very thickly so that you could barely bite it and was definitely underripe...which may have caused most of that un-biteablity ... - the iced coffee came in huge beer glasses which was amusing and the potato latkes with gravlax were a massive serving! read more
