I thought everything was really good! You get so much food and it is really good. My boyfriend and I went kind of crazy and wanted to try everything. We got regular pickles (yum!) and fried pickles (also yum). He orders a beer float (I wasn't the biggest fan but he liked it). For the meal I got the BBQ jack chicken sandwich. So yummy! It comes on a biscuit, the BBQ was great (I don't usually like BBQ all that much but this was kind of light and tasty). It had way too much cheese on it for me but my boyfriend ate what I couldn't. It was also easy to take off any cheese I didn't want. It also came with cheese grits -pretty decent (I usually like my grits with a little butter and a little salt) but these were definitely tasty. For dessert we got the fried Oreos-yum! I missed those things. The service was good! But the wait!...oh man-it was pretty long. But the great thing was they had a great system where they text you within 10 minutes of your table being ready and ask if you want to hold your spot or not. This was great. We were able to walk around the UWS until our table was ready. We discovered this place on a trip to NYC. As a lifetime lover of pickles and southern food I knew I had to stop! We started with their BLT Bloody Mary, some selections of pickles and split a Southern BLT Biscuit. All were awesome! When we ordered a selection of 4 pickles we thought it would be a plate of a few of each but they brought out a "taster tray" of four jars! I was seated promptly and our server was nice and swift. I ordered the honey chicken and got fries instead of fries. Its hard not to expect a glorious experience - maybe even get expectations a tad too high - when a menu has magical offers such as "add bacon to any beer for $2" - but even the high hopes and expectations this created were an easy hurdle for Jacob to blow past. Jacob's Pickles is hands down my favorite restaurant on the Upper West Side, and now that my latest experience here is fresh in my mind, I figured it was time to write a review. Though I didn't order drinks on this particular occasion, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite cocktail north of midtown: THE BROOKLYN GIN. This baby does all the right things. Ingredients: lime infused Dorthy Parker Gin, chili infused Perry's Tot NS gin, fresh squeezed limeade, orange bittermens, Brooklyn bitters, and organic cane syrup. This drink turned me onto spicy cocktails. But be wanred: these are STRONG. Danger: sloppiness ahead (I speak from one amateur experience). Enter at your own risk. But onto the main event: Pickles!!!! Now like a good Jew, I love me some pickles. And wouldn't you know it? Jacob's Pickles, indeed, serves pickles! I'm pretty sure I've tried every kind here, and they're all delicious. Highlights for me are the Hot Sours (moderately spicy) and the Big Dill Koshers. Honorable mention goes to the Dilly Green Beans. That said, if you're not into vinegar, steer clear of those and just stick with the pickles. Food that I can speak to: -Spiced Shrimp and Green Market Kale Salad: vanilla bean roasted sweet potatoes and mushrooms, fava beans, radishes and peppers in a honey dijon vinaigrette with shrimp -Catfish Tacos: Farm raised catfish, lime crema, cilantro slaw, cebollines w/ fresh lime and kosher salt -Black Peppercorn Seared Salmon: Shitake and King Oyster Mushroom Gratin -Honey Chicken and Pickles biscuit sandwich: Buttermilk fried chicken, hot sours, clover honey Well, this completely depends on what you're in the mood for. These meals are all incredible. If you're looking for something lighter, go for the salad or fish tacos. Something heavier and very savory, I'd go with the salmon. If you want good ole southern comfort, the biscuit sandwich is the obvious choice. This place is known for its biscuit sandwiches, so I suppose if you're looking to go authentic, the last option is best. I can speak highly of all of them though! Lastly, ambiance/service: My only issue with this place is the lighting. It is very, very dark. Yes, they have small candles on every table, but that only does so much. Reading the menu can be a bit of an onus, but it's one small drawback of this place. The service is great, the staff is personable, all positive there. The lighting is just quite dim. I also think it's important to mention the wait. On any given night, it can be anywhere from a 20 minute to an hour wait (worse on weekends, not surprisingly). There's an adequate strip of bars on Amsterdam that you can grab a drink at before (or you can go inside and stand at the bar), but just be prepared to wait. No reservations, sadly. read more

Went to JP's for brunch with my bf a few weeks ago on a Saturday and were quoted an hour wait, which we were expecting based on the reviews. We went to a nearby coffee shop while we waited for our table. When our table was ready, we were escorted to the back of the restaurant and noticed lots of young families and large brunch parties. We started with the fried pickles, which reminded me of a beer batter fry and the inside was tangy and delicious. For the main dish I ordered the fried chicken and biscuits with mushroom gravy and grits. The portions were crazy huge yet the chicken was somehow deliciously moist on the inside. I cannot rave more about the mushroom gravy that tied the dish together. The biscuits were definitely on the sweeter side which I wasn't expecting. I was thankful the grits were light to balance out the heaviness of the dish...I wanted to drink it from the container. I don't think you can practically eat this as a sandwich but it's nonetheless delicious. We were happy to have leftovers to enjoy! To kick off a Summer Friday, I friend and I decided to meet up for lunch on the Upper Best Side. Since we had been to their sister restaurant Maison Pickles - how cute is that name? - we knew that Jacob's Pickle's wouldn't disappoint. Walking in no tables were available outside but we did get a table close enough to the front where it was basically an open air seating area. This venue is fairly compact and no one has much room but let me tell you, everyone makes it work and if you don't like hearing people hear your conversation remember that this is New York and no one cares about that thing you did last night. Anyway, we had an amazing server who was very prompt in checking in on us, providing water and walking us through the menu. He suggested the perfect summer drink: the Jam Jar. This has house infused strawberry farmers gin with lemonade and major Summer Friday vibes. If the food hadn't filled us up, trust me I would've had much more than just one of these.. Since neither of us wanted to really break the bank, we decided to share two mains: a side of penne style mac and cheese along with their sausage gravy buttermilk fried chicken. It was literally one of the best food decisions made for 2018. The mac and cheese was very creamy, cheesy AF and everything you could hope for. The dish it comes in looks small but it is packed with what has to be close to an entire box of pasta. Meanwhile, the chicken was drowned in sausage gravy and every bite was just so comforting and delicious especially when you pop in a couple pieces of the mac and cheese. Have to say, the mac and cheese hit the spot more than the chicken but points for the chicken dish for being so large - definitely a friendly place for those with a bottomless stomach or just absolutely starving for fresh food! Overall, the food, service and drink options are bomb. The layout of the venue is narrow and it does get loud but sit closer to the front and you can have a good conversation and plenty of natural light for those Yelp photos. I ordered the fried chicken basket that came with mashed potatoes, collard greens, 2 big pieces of fried chicken, a side of pickles and a big biscuit. the portions were generous for $23 and I shared with another person. The chicken was fried to perfection - a crunchy layer on the outside with juicy chicken on the inside. The collard greens have chunks of pulled pork in it. I did not like the mashed potatoes as much as I liked the other sides even though mashed potatoes Is one of my favorite sides in general. Something about the mashed potatoes tasted a little cardboard-y but the gravy was able to mask the weird taste a little. This is a great dish to get if you want to sample a little bit of everything. Definitely want to try one of their more unique dishes next time such as the fried chicken and pancakes! Service was great. If you want some comfort food, or need to fill your stomach after a night of drinking, this is the place to be. I definitely recommend visiting this place at least once when you are in the city. The portions are very large, and the food is super savory. If you like cheese and you order a dish with cheese, they will dump mountains on your dish. Everything is so savory. The biscuits are extremely soft and crumble perfectly in your mouth without being too dry. They have interesting jams, maple butter, and the meltiest delicious regular butter you can add to your biscuits. If you are on a diet, this is not the place to be. For my order of ham egg and cheese biscuit sandwich, the egg was perfectly runny to my taste. Be warned it is an extremely loud and crowded place. The music is very dancy, even at lunchtime and people are sitting very close to you having conversations and bumping into you left and right. My group of four had to share a table with a group of two. The wait time is the worst part. The earlier you get there the shorter the wait time should be. We got there around 11-11:10 and waited about an hour. Overall very good food and worth the wait, next time I visit I plan to try the drinks when I'm not hungover. read more

I have mixed feelings about Jacob's Pickles. We went on a rainy day and didn't have to wait to sit down. I outlined below some of my thoughts, as there are different ratings for different parts of the meal. 5/5- Pickled vegetables- oh my gosh, may favorite part of the meal for sure. The pickled vegetables are incredible and you can order a bunch of different types of vegetables. The carrots are so good, I mean they are all so good. 5/5- Bloody Mary- amazing, also has some veggies on it that are pickled, which again delicious 2/5 Fried Chicken Cesar Salad- not great at all. The lettuce was terrible, it was pretty much all romaine hearts that were red and not fresh. So much so that I started taking them out and I had a plate staked high. The chicken was the only good part 2/5- Service was not great, after seeing that my salad wasn't great the waitress didn't do anything. She was pretty rude honestly. She did come back at the end of the meal and said that she was going to get us an order of fried Oreos because my salad was bad. We were stuffed and didn't want the Oreos, if anything my salad should have been comped. She said that's what she could do and brought the Oreos, which we didn't eat as we had said we didn't want them. My mom got the chicken and waffles and really liked the chicken, the portion size was huge. Honestly I would go here for the veggies/Bloody Mary again, the vegetable were the best.
