My grandfather and a lot of family members love this small but well placed Chinese restaurant. The waiters were really nice to my diverse family. We felt welcomed. The buffet is kind of small but the price is super affordable. You can take as much stuff as you want though and take many trips to the buffet containers then to your table to eat etc. I really liked their soups and the seafood items. The restaurant is pretty roomy and has tables with lots of seats to accommodate groups of people. Overall it's an average and decent restaurant. read more

A similar take out rice box in Toronto or Vancouver will set you back $9-$15 on the lowest price end plus charge you for utensils. Most people seem to complain about the taste of the food. This place has been around for YEARS !!!!!! I remember coming here back in the 80s. The food was better then, but there are still some dishes that are not bad. I usually stick to the Authentic Chinese dishes, they are done better than the Americanized Chinese options. I did not like their sushi, pizza, noodles, soups, etc. But if you are looking to try some of their stewed meats, bbq dishes, dumplings, mussels and salt n pepper shrimp. It is not bad. The display is huge...they have salads, vegetarian dishes, noodles, rices, soups, pizza, sushi, desserts, ice cream, fruit, pudding, dim sum, bbq dishes, congee, seafood, wings, you name it...... We did the take out portion of this restaurant. It was one of the few restaurants that were opened before 10:00. Even before 11:00. Can't believe so many restaurants open so late. Anyways the lady was really nice. You order your items per the piece and not per the order (like an order would come with 4 siu mais.) din sum was def not the greatest but it was not made to order. So I did set my standards lower. The har gao skin was too thick and the shrimp and chives pan fried dumpling did not have a good ratio of meat to shrimp. It was mostly pork. The char siu bao was dry and tasted lumpy. The caveat is that you eat outside even if it's take out there's no area inside to quickly eat. Haven't that said don't compare it to a dim sum restaurant. Service is relatively good. But the food is really just not it. It's honestly just sad. Pay in front 25$ w/ tip and taxes. So it's cheaper than most other all you can eat buffets. But for the quality presented, there is no way I could justify coming here. You're better off paying 5$ more for an experience that is worlds better compared to this. Sadly, I can no longer in good conscience recommend this place. The prices have gone up (still cheap in relation to other places I guess, inflation and all), while the food choices and quality have gone significantly down. No more char siu, no more duck, no more ice cream, no more mussels, no more fish, no more tom yum soup. what remains is sadly overcooked or undercooked, everything either tough or soggy. They now enforce a policy where you must pay first, prior to entering the buffet (with a mandatory tip included!) - I suspect they've had customers refuse to pay after finding the food unsatisfactory. The bathrooms remain as gross as ever, with a distinct odor emanating from the area with fecal undertones. I saw a mouse run across the floor. The sad thing is that the employees are still as hardworking as ever. Times are tough and it's hard these days to survive as a buffet with inflated food prices and all. Tried this two times and each time it was a complete disappointment. Pretty much all the items have pork. So if you don't eat/like pork then you are doomed. The food is mediocre if not less than mediocre. They have "sushi" which is like plastic rice with some veggies. It looks so nasty that you would think twice before eating it :/ the foods are clearly not cooked with care! You can see this in the way they put the dishes. Bao! There's the buffet in the back, but the store in the front is a dedicated bun aka "bao" pumping machine for to-go orders. You can smell the sweet fluffy bread from a block away. They have meat and veggie buns and of course the classic b.b.q. pork bun aka "char siu bao." They aren't like the ones you get at dim sum. These bad boys are big, like Costco-big, like size of a baby's head-big. Eat a couple of these baos, and you're stuffed. Tips: You gotta know what you want. It's crazy Canto style up in there. I do not come here for the scarey buffet. Instead, I come here for the cheap and always pleasant bakery area. While all of the streets are dead quiet in the early morning and Poon Kai is the only storefront open. Grab some freshly baked items and enjoy them on the red picnic tables out front, on the quiet brick street in the early hours. There is nothing better than eating a massive steaming sesame ball in the middle of winter. I read other people's comments about the buffet of this restaurant, as a Chinese I have to say some of the comments are not so true for me. Because for me, the food here is quite authentic Chinese food. The Chinese food in the local Chinese restaurants are not so authentic. I guess that's why local people here prefere those not so authentic Chinese food. The mussels are not so good because in China people don't eat them, The beef is fat is because it's the belly part. And actually I'm a fan of beef belly, that's the most tasty part. So I guess it depends everyone's taste. I don't think westeners really like authentic Chinese food so much. This is not the best Chinese buffet that I have been to, but it is also not bad - in fact I discovered some new dishes here that I had not seen in any other Chinese buffett. It is located in Montreal's tiny Chinatown, which is mostly Vitenamese and Laotian, but the place offers decent food at excellent prices and it is one of those places that one always eats too much for too little and then is thirsty from all the salty food for the next 48 hours. The mussels and garlicked octopus were as good as any that I've had anywhere. and I did notice that there were also a few Western dishes (pasta, etc.) but didn't try any. There were quite a few varieties of soup and the salad bar was really good with a top notch seaweed salad. There is also a stir fry station and the usual unusual Chinese only dishes like chicken feet... Excellent service by a cadre of young Chinese girls. They desperately need a health and safety worker to come in. Won't go back. Went today after my gf saw the place, when you first walk in there's a weird smell (later found out it was mold). After getting food I noticed all the mold around, the ceiling had condensation from the steaming food and the floor was wet all over. Barely any food had labels, I chose a noodle dish that had no label and after thoroughly checking, after eating I then noticed 2 pieces of shrimp (which I'm allergic too). The food didn't taste good either, was pretty stale and old. The service is no good too, after finishing plates we left the table two times to get different plates and our original plates sat there the whole time. At some point people started bringing their plates to the staff to be collected. The staff don't pay attention, most were on their phones. After finishing my water it stayed empty, the servers wouldn't check up on you. I see why they make you pay before including a tip. read more

Don't walk, RUN away from this place! The food was horrible. Everything is way over salted or perhaps MSG is used by the shovelful. The service was non-existent and the most unfriendly I've received in decades. I had to practically tackle a waitress to get some more water. There were very few choices of proteins. Sweet and sour pork was the only one I saw that looked edible (barely). There were peel and eat shrimp with vein and head intact. Eat them at your own peril. I did not. Brisket and turnips in brown sauce. I tried it and couldn't eat a second bite. They had pigs feet which looked so disgusting, I couldn't even try them. Desserts were sparse and looked old and slimy. There were freezers where you would expect to have ice cream, but they were covered with trays of dishes so you couldn't access them. I did anyway and they were empty. Just go anywhere else. After a busy day of walking around Montreal doing touristy things, we were hungry. My two year old child was no longer scared of the status of lions in Chinatown, so we decided to look for a chinese buffet. First Chinatown isn't very chinese anymore, there is a lot of Thai and Korean in the area. Secondly, the Chinese buffet my parents used to take me to as a child, the one with scrumptous food, and horrible washrooms was no longer in existance. Walking around a bit we went onto Lagauchetiere and stumbled on Jade. The host had seated all of the asian customers closest to the windows so us whiteys would say - "If there's asians eating there, then it has to be good". Well the marketing ploy worked and we were inside and seated within moments of entering. The place is huge inside. You could host a wedding here, and still have left over tables. As with the seating, the buffet was huge as well. There were three different tables of dessert and 5-6 of main course dinner items. I tried to eat a little bit of everything and still stuffed myself like a pig. Overall, I'd consider the food at Jade better than the Mandarin (and cheaper too!) However if you can help it, don't use the washroom. It was disgusting. Part of the problem is other customers who refuse to flush, and the other part is just general neglect. read more

ATMOSPHERE: Typical Asian restaurant. It's very large on the inside which is nice. I do find that it's a little bit run down and that the place could be fixed up a bit but that's just me. FOOD: Food is average. Nothing special. However, I did really enjoy their steamed sticky rice (it's kind of hidden, you have to look into the rice cookers) and their fried battered fish. But I'm not surprised, it's a buffet and it's cheap so I don't expect top-notch quality. Their sushi is BAD, I would not recommend it. I don't recommend pizza, fries or desserts either (basically just don't eat the Western foods). But do try the meats, seafoods, noodles and stirfrys. It's what the Chinese do best. I'll definitely come back here again when I'm CRAVING cheap Chinese food or drunk. PRICE: Prices are pretty affordable. They vary depending on which time of the day you're going at which is a plus to me. It's cheaper in the afternoon of course but even the dinner prices aren't bad. The worst food I've ever had in my life, got yelp just to leave a review. I took one bite and my stomach started to hurt. All of the food is brown and lukewarm. Employees were very cold and uninviting. I think what truly tops off this house of horrors is that someone wrote "Worst Food Ever" in the men's bathroom. Came here with a Chinese tour and we were seated In the back. The aged food splatters on the wall would have been fine if this were a side street cafe in Hong Kong but it just seemed to give this place a dingy feel. The food had some good, some neutral, and some not good parts to it. Some of the meats were edible, but then again, I questioned what some of the meats were- they didn't taste like chicken, pork, or goat. I'd give this place 2 stars as the good, the bad, the average kind of cancel each other out, but the restaurant itself didn't win me in "warmth". Their Chinese desserts were fairly good, like the sticky rice cake and red bean soup. They have ice cream but I'd run away from that crystallized mash- it has nice flavor if you can crunch through the semi crystallized ice it has become. Absolutely dreadful. Ordered the chicken curry ala carte takeaway with rice for approx. $5. Curry just tasted like msg and is overall unappealing. The chicken is fried and does not appear to be cooked in the curry rather had the curry poured over it. The only plus side is the rice which was nice. First off, let me qualify: I have never eaten at the Buffet. I have never stepped foot in the actual restaurant (door to the left). From what I gather from the reviews, the buffet restaurant has almost no connection to the take-out bakery even though they apparently share the same address. Where I usually go, is the bakery door (to the right) on the deck. It's no-frills in here - a lady behind a counter takes your take-out order and you go nuts. Unfortunately, they don't really have a menu, so you kind of have to ask a lot or know what to order. They have --hands-down -- the BEST vegetarian steamed bao I've ever had. It is chock full of vermicelli, mushrooms, black fungus, carrots, peas - and very filling. A bun is the size of your entire hand and you will get full on a single bao. Also good is the pork cabbage bun and char siu BBQ pork bun. They also make "Big Bao" with a full boiled egg inside -- my dad is a big fan of these, and these buns are about the size of your head. Hugely filling. Other things to try: har gao (shrimp dumpling), fried meat 'salty water gok' dumpling, baked buns including BBQ pork, coconut, and dessert items like fried sesame balls, fermented white sugar cake, egg tarts, and more. A huge take-out order will set you back only $25, and I guarantee your family will be eating well for 3 or 4 meals. read more

The meat and vegetables all looked as if they were rotting, and the food all looked as if it was sitting out for days. Don't get me started on the disgusting tastes. The food was covered in moldy sauces, they were very stale, overtly salted/sugary, and some of the meats squirted tons of oil once I bit into it. SUPER GROSS! The dessert options all looked stale. We didn't bother with any of the pastries. We instead went for the vanilla ice cream which was so gritty in texture, and felt as if there was sand inside... I couldn't even let the ice cream pass at this restaurant. This food should never be fed to anyone, not even to high risk offenders in prison. I'm not even exaggerating when I'm writing this! My companion and I were walking around Montreal hungry, broke, and tired. We came across Chinatown with looking for some Thai food. We stumbled across this Chinese buffet and got pulled in by our stomachs. The buffet ($10) did what we wanted, fed us cheap and quickly. There were a number of different tables both hot and cold. I couldn't get into everything they had but here's my highlights: sushi (not fish, just a couple of veggie rolls), green beans, broccoli, cabbage, shumai, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, pad thai noodles, flat rice noodles, yams, honeydew melons, and stickrice. The place was busy and the food turnover was good. I think I lucked out staying with veggies and noodles. I could see getting sick from this place if you eat too much. They also have a select-your-own-ingredient stirfry station. We were in a hurry so we just ate and ran basically. The service was very quick and responsive and the decor was dark and gloomy. I accidentally put a chicken foot on my plate and I still have a little guilt for having it tossed out without attempting a single bite at it. But I was a bit grossed out by it. Went to talk to the manager but they just yelled at us and cursed us in cantonese (funny because I actually understand every word they're saying). Even the waiters became very rude after and we also insulting us in front of our faces! Honestly, I know you don't go to a buffet for a 5 star meal, but at least serve something that's actually edible. Stay away from the buffet. On the other hand their bakery is great, I've gone there to buy buns ever since I was a little kid and they're super cheap and filling. When I asked which bun was veg and which was pork, the cashier replied, with an r-u-dumb tone, "the pointy shaped one". That's like answering "yes" to an "A or B" question.
