We have been fans of Dim Sum for years, dining in restaurants in San Francisco and New York. We tried Dim Sum in several places in Virginia Beach but this place is by far the best. The storefront is rather unassuming and looks like a small place, but it extends very far back. All of the food was fresh and the portions were very generous. We are big fans of sticky rice and this was a large portion with deliciously marinated bits of sausage, pork, and chicken. A+. The fried shrimp balls were exquisite. We didn't care for an order of dumplings as the filling inside was cold and the outside was fried. The plate of spinach was so green and fresh and perfectly marinated. I even tried some marinated eggplant which was absolutely delicious. We were there on a Sunday 15 minutes after the noon opening and we had a 45 minute wait. It was well worth the wait. Considering the freshness of the food, kindness of the staff and the wide variety that is offered, a weekend visit for Dim Sum is high recommended. read more

New management but still good! Entrance is different, remodeled floor and fresh paint. Food is just as good maybe better with certain items with more flavor like the chicken feet. The old owner was there when we went so it looked like they're still transitioning over. Service needs work and the servers could use more training. Otherwise, will still continue to visit and glad they reopened with the same menu. I'd suggest they have a permanent hostess, more seating available in waiting area, and work on training servers to be in sync with one another on their process. read more

My husband and I have to be up forward, this place honestly made our small visit in Norfolk, Virginia Beach worth while when it came to last minute good eats! You can tell that's it's a small town favorite, highly recommended, not too busy, family owned and overall a great spot for Chinese food. We're visiting from California and we are foodies. We try not to judge too hard when traveling but we were definitely taken by surprise here with the flavors! My husband's favorite dish: Young Chow Fried Rice My favorite: Wonton Soup The Sate!!! Jade Villa is my JAM!!! Jade Villa is a staple in Hampton Roads. If one enjoys Cantonese Cuisine and a full on dim sum cart experience, Jade Villa is what you're looking for. Honestly, I've never traveled to the Orient(yet) so not sure how it compares. I've been a long time customer & remember coming to Jade Villa in my 20s after a night in the club. I believe they used to be open until 3AM! LOL Fast forward, this visit had me pause and ponder how much I enjoyed the food and experience. The service & dishes were exceptional! We were in line before they opened because, that's just how it goes if one doesn't want to wait. Otherwise, be prepared to wait for hours if you hit a sweet spot. As soon as we sat down, a server had glasses of water ready, asked if we wanted something else to drink, staff was upbeat, smiling, fun, & accommodating. There is a new positive energy that's alive in Jade Villa. Carts were full and coming at us from both sides!! I was in an ensemble of a dim sum dream in dim sum heaven!! We were also seated close to the kitchen & cash registers where all the action begins and dim sum journey ends. Each dish tasted freshly steamed/cooked & were all super flavorful. It's been about a month since my last visit, but my daughter concurred the flavors were more pronounced. More dim sum options were constantly rotating. The food never stopped & who am I to deny a dish I haven't tried even if I'm full? There was no delay in the dim sum rotation or refilling our water which made for a perfect dim sum dining experience. Came here on a Saturday evening with a party of 6. There was ample parking in the lot outside. We called to reserve a table for 6 an hour prior to coming here. However, when we came here, they seated another party in our reserved table. They quickly cleaned up and set up another table for us. I think the staff here didn't really communicate with one another that well. The menu was confusing since they had two separate menus. One red and the other one white. They had totally different foods and it was hard to find what we wanted to eat. We were ready to order for at least 10-15 minutes until we finally got a servers attention. The ordering process just took too long. It wasn't just my party, it happened to another group too. The cleanliness was not so great. One of their spoons still had rice on it from after the dishes. We ordered takeout after seeing all the Elite's enjoy this restaurant during a recent Elite Event. Ordering online for pickup was fairly simple. We found the website through yelp and went from there. After checking out the full menu we decided on 10 shrimp dumplings, 6 deep fried shrimp balls, chicken Lo mein, and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Pick up was simple. They don't offer an online payment option, so you pay at pick up, easy enough. Everything was packaged neatly and still pretty hot when we got home. Food was great. Next time we'll dine in and enjoy the dumpling cart and a drink from their full bar. read more

Jade Villa, a local landmark authentic Cantonese restaurant, has been reborn after closing last August as a result of chronic staffing shortages. Shortly after closing, they made a surprise announcement that they were going to reopen after completing some renovations. New ownership took over, and they reopened only a month later in September. There has been a Chinese restaurant at this spot for as long as I can remember. Jade Villa first opened back in 2001, and before that, it went by the name of The Golden China and served the same style of authentic Cantonese style cuisine. I can remember when it went by the name of the Hay Hay Chinese restaurant back in the 70s, where I ordered my first Zombie. The renovations include a new interior paint job, and tile flooring has taken the place of the old carpeting that had become well worn.. The result is a new look with a fresh and sparkling feel. Their Dim Sum brunch has also returned on Saturdays and Sundays with traditional push cart service. A number of Dim Sum offerings are also available during the other days of the week, but the ones printed in red are only served on the weekends. Their menus remain the same as before. There are two menus, one with a white cover for their Americanized style Chinese dishes and one with a red cover for their authentic Cantonese fare. I always order from their red menu. After four visits since their reopening, I have tried the following: HAR GOW: This is a classic Cantonese Dim Sum shrimp dumpling dish and is available each day. Their version comes served as four plump roundish dumplings that explode with a sumptuous shrimp filling that oozes with each bite from their chewy and translucent skins. My Rating: 5 Stars. JELLYFISH & TASTY OCTOPUS: Ordered from their list of Appetizers, this one is my new favorite. It comes with several baby octopuses with cold sliced jellyfish in a spicy rice vinegar sauce. The jellyfish delivers a delightfully firm and snappy texture with a bit of crunch. Each baby octopus was tender and delicious. This dish pairs exceptionally well with their house made hot chili oil. My Rating: 5-Plus Stars. JELLYFISH WITH SHRIMP PASTE AND SEAWEED ROLL. This one was also ordered from their Appetizer list. The rolls were artfully presented in a circle around the jellyfish in the middle. The jellyfish delivered the same spicy vinegary flavor and snappy texture as before. I found some of the rolls to be a tad dry, but still satisfying overall. My Rating: 4 Stars. ROASTED DUCK WONTON NOODLE SOUP: This is one of my old favorites, and it was as good as I remembered from years past. The plump wonton noodles, bok choy, roasted duck, and its broth came together for a filling and delicious taste experience. My Rating: 5 Stars. SEAFOOD PAN FRIED NOODLES: This was my first time trying this classic Cantonese dish, which was a bit of a learning experience. Their version came with fried egg noodles over a chicken broth and topped with shrimp, scallops, squid, and crab sticks for a colorful presentation. The trick for softening the noodles is to soak them in the broth underneath with a spoon, which I learned from a video on this dish after getting home. I didn't always do so, and I ate some of the noodles before they were softened as desired. A couple of the scallops were not as tender as I liked. I ate half and took the rest of the home for a second meal, enabling me to reheat the noodles to a softer texture. Otherwise, this dish was very satisfying, and I will definitely order it again and eat it as the video instructed. My Rating: 4 Stars. SALTED & SPICY SHRIMP (SHELL ON): This one is another old favorite, and I have always been a fan of shrimp served in the shell for the extra crunch its texture provides. The shrimp comes breaded and is slathered with diced garlic and spiced with jalapeno peppers. If I could tweak its preparation a bit, I would like a little less breading on the shrimp, as I remember it being served years ago. Otherwise, it was very satisfying. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. BEEF WITH CHINESE BROCCOLI: I had my first taste of Chinese Broccoli, also known as Gai Lan, about a year ago. As a result, I can no longer go back to regular western style broccoli in Asian dishes. The beef was tender and tasty, and its sauce delivered some pleasant notes of ginger. The Chinese Broccoli delivered a very satisfying taste and texture with an eye appeal that I no longer find from western broccoli. My Rating: 5 Stars. Service was a bit slow during my first visit after their reopening, but was much improved during my later visits. The owner came by to check on me during my visits. For my next visit, I plan to order their Steamed Chilean Sea Bass, which is another old favorite. In addition, I plan to attend one of their Dim Sum brunches once I find a group to go with me. I am so glad this restaurant has reopened, and my dining experiences here since then have made the cut to my 5-star rating. read more

Place was clean, although floors were sticky throughout-think they need to change products or rinse after mopping. Bathroom was clean but missing hand towel. Hand printed paper signs telling you to wait to be seated or go to counter for pickup were tacky and out if place. Came here about an hour or so before closing, the staff was friendly and patient. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves and ordered the sesame chicken, Peking duck and the shrimp dumplings. The dumplings were hot, fresh and an absolute 10/10 super enjoyable I also favored the duck with buns paired with hoisin sauce. They have really turned things around. I've been coming to Jade Villa for over 25 years. In the last 10 years the food quality has just gone downhill. The place was filthy and the service just sucked. The place would be slammed with only two waitresses hosting, serving and taking orders. When I heard they shutdown, I thought "good"! However, they reopened with new ownership, new staff, same manager or owner maybe new owner (I'm not sure), and same menu. However it is totally remodeled. I've been there twice since they reopened this fall of 2022. Both times I came with a big party. Both times my food was on point. Did not taste stale, old or disgusting. The service was on point. They had servers, busboys and just more than 2 waitresses. I am very impressed that they were able to turn things around because this is one of the few places locally that serves authentic Cantonese and Chinese food. I was so hurt and upset I'm out 65$ bucks and was still hungry...the lo main was dry and taste funny especially the after taste and smell..was happy because the shrimp to noodles level was good but I only took couple of folk full i didn't want anymore after eating... The fresh crab fried rice wasn't really fried and have no flavor at all...seem like the just added cold crabmeat to white rice. Egg roll was trash very blind and small The geo tos chicken was very tender and juicey but have to seasoning the sauce made it sticky and start to dry rhe coating up.... The main courses were house special fried rice (amazing), string beans in black bean sauce (INCREDIBLE if you've never had them), shrimp with mixed vegetables (the shrimp were huge and delicious), and General Tsao's Chicken, which I dare say was the best GTC I've ever had, ever. I heard this place closed, but then discovered it reopened after remodel with new management. It's nice inside! Some of the same table but new floor and sturdy chairs. That kind of industrial look where you know the food is good and the decorative frills arent a distraction. Service was a little odd with one man seating me, who later disappeared and 2 wait staff tag-teaming tables. Like whoever is ready to order, one of them does it. Food ready, the same. Not the same person though. That's ok! No problem, nice staff. There are 2 menus, one has more authentic dishes and Chinese/English letters. The other is just English. My table was clean but one of the plates was a little dirty. I noticed the staff scooting plates from table to table, so a dirty finger was likely the random smear I saw. I got egg drop soup and it was pretty yellow. It came out not so hot, but tasted fine. Nothing amazing going on there. The crunchies were nice and light. Two dim sum were ordered. First was pan fried dumplings, and they were huge! Nice strong wrapper filled to the brim with meat and veggies. They were awesome. The one that looks a little burnt was the best one! I also got a stuffed black fungus/mushroom. I asked what was in it, and it's shrimp paste and mushrooms. Like, I asked if I got the right thing cause it was just shrimp stuffing. But sure enough found the little mushroom cap on the bottom. They were so over filled the "stuffing" steamed together. It was really good with the chili oil. My entree was stir fried string beans with (or without) the ground pork. This is usually a hit due to the flavor of wok singed beans and pork, Jade Villa's was no different. Delicious and tasty. Bit oily, but that's pork for you. It's a tad spicy and there were a few onions bits too. I would love to come back here and explore the dim sum some more and try some of their other dishes. Love this place! I took my siblings here before I was on Yelp and had a fantastic meal. Unfortunately, it closed afterward - permanently I thought, however, they are back open after a renovation!! So.. I took my boyfriend here for lunch. Soo happy they're back open!! This is my go-to sit-down Chinese restaurant. Most other Chinese restaurants focus on takeout or delivery, but this place is great for a dine-in experience. The inside is a lot brighter and has a more modern look now! It was pretty busy when we got there, but we were seated shortly after our arrival. Our servers were nice and attentive. From the Dim Sum menu, we got shrimp dumplings, shark fin dumplings, and deep fried sesame seed balls (my bf didn't know it was a dessert lol). For an appetizer we got crab wontons, and my entree was General's Shrimp and shrimp fried rice. He got the Beef Stew, Beef Tendon, with Daikon Radish. The food came out, one dish after another, in a timely manner. We ate our dim sum first. I very much enjoyed the shrimp dumplings. They were a little chewy and full of delicious shrimp. I tried some shark fin dumpling, but it had an odd taste and smell to me. My boyfriend ate them up, though. I'm not very adventurous sometimes. Then came the crab rangoon, but it didn't come with sauce like last time. I asked for sweet and sour, and they brought something different than the red sauce. Hmm. Maybe I'll try asking for "red sauce" next time. The wontons were delicious regardless, and the sauce they brought went okay with them. My General Shrimp and shrimp fried rice, which I also ordered last time, was perfect. I love how crispy they get the shrimp, even with all the sauce. The sauce is also scrumptious, sweet and spicy. I really enjoy their fried rice. It comes with egg and is cooked differently than I've had from other Chinese restaurants. The rice could be a dish on it's own, lots of flavors there. My boyfriend's beef stew was a hearty portion of tender meat and melty tendon. He hadn't tried that kind of radish before, but enjoyed it. It came with white rice. It was a very flavorful, filling dish. I love how it is presented in the hot pot - I want to get my own for cooking at home !! We left Jade Villa feeling very happy and satisfied. "JV" as my brother and I have called it for as long as I can remember closed down after decades of being the only dim sum place in Hampton Roads. It has reopened with a new owner. A bit of renovation inside, but no more weekend dim sum push carts. You order off a paper menu and wait for the items to be brought out. There are a few menu changes but for the most part very similar. Definitely new chef(s). The food was good, but some die hards will notice some differences in portion sizes and flavor. We did enjoy it. It's nice to have some "real" Cantonese dim sum so close to home again. The downside(my opinion)-You end up waiting a lot longer for your food so the turn over for tables is slow. They really need to get the push carts back into the weekend dim sum. The wait was brutal with kids half starved. We also ended up getting some of our steam dishes 50 mins+ after the initial ordering and constantly following up/ asking about the missing dishes. Make sure you are here when the place opens if you aren't a large party. There are only about 4 or so small tables now. I decided to give 4 stars because the food was good and dim sum is hard to come by in this area. I'll come back and re-review after some time. For now, I decided to base the whole experience as if I had no knowledge or history of this place and review as I would any new eating establishment. read more

A legit dim sum place in the VB area?!?! Yes PLEASE. I had heard a lot about this place and, from reading the reviews, knew the weekends were poppin, but I was still surprised to see a line out the door for Sunday brunch. As soon as the restaurant opened, we all filed in and were very quickly seated. And soon after that, the carts started rolling through!!! The group favorite was, of course, the dim sum, followed closely by the shrimp dumplings. I also enjoyed the sticky rice, stuffed tofu, and Chinese broccoli. My friends and I ate almost to the point of being so full that you regret it - but I promise you, there were no regrets. We got in line around 11:20 am and was close to the entrance.I recommend to be there early on a Sunday. We ordered noodle dishes and they were both super soggy & just not up to par with what we're used to. I've had fried noodles before and this one was just too soup and it made the noodles instantly soggy. And the other crab egg noodles dish were over cooked & just not great. Best egg drop soup hands down! And their spicy mustard hits you right in the sinus with a perfect kick! Service is always pleasant and they don't mind explaining some of the authentic dishes.
