It is very conveniently located in the aptly…read morenamed Rum Brook Plaza between a gas station, Helen's Place (open for lunch and dinner), and a small brookside park. At lunchtime, the parking lot is like a beehive with cars and trucks of people working in the area pulling in and back out with freshly made sandwiches, salads (not green salads, but the kind made with real mayonnaise), and those huge dill pickles that used to stand around in barrels at old time delis. There are individual servings of desserts in a refrigerator, a smattering of fresh produce, fresh breads, snacks, beverages (including beer and wine, and there is even a tiny wine alcove), ice cream, birthday candles and other things you might need once in a while but can't seem to lay your hands on. In the mornings, there are house-made breakfast sandwiches in a warmer so people can grab and go. The people work hard and are kind and friendly. We stopped in on Memorial Day - along with everyone else in the area - to pick up potato salad, seafood salad, and macaroni salad, and they were prepared! It was all hands on deck at the deli, shelves were stocked, and there were extra checkout clerks. Whether it's at the unofficial kickoff to summer or on snowy day, the fine folks at Rum Brook Market are there to make your day just that much more satisfying.

I mentioned it to the girl, who already was clearly ready to go home... we walk back to show her the price it's being advertised, takes my dessert, puts it back, and says "well that's the price in the register, there's nothing I can do for you" extremely rude. I get it was right before closing, but there was no need for the miserable attitude. was passing through NH- glad I WONT be back. Working in customer service? Have a better attitude.

In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, it seemed the foods I ate were more pure and clean than the Americanized Vietnamese dishes I grew up with. The Phnom Penh restaurant and to-go shops serve food which tastes similar to Vietnamese to me. I really like the dishes I've tasted so far, including the fried rice. I did not yet try the pho, here, but it looks great. The sandwich shop is better to sit down in and relax in and enjoy your food. Also, their Khmer iced coffee is yum.

That said, the coffee, food, and service are worth it! There are two seating rooms and one of them opens out to restrooms and a very small shopping/business mall. The tables and chairs are thick, heavy, rustic wood reminiscent of a country kitchen, and the acoustics are pretty good! No echoes or a need to yell to friends or family at your own table. The service is stellar! Lots of students work here and they are top notch. The food is outstanding. Their hash browns are literally the best I have ever had. They are wispy and crispy, and will not leave grease on your plate or in your belly. The eggs are always perfect, no matter how you ask for them, and the pancakes are the best you can get without making them yourself at home. They are served with a syrup, but for $2.00 extra (at the time of this posting), you can get real maple syrup instead. By the way, their coffee is not limited to regular and decaf. There is a delightful coffee drinks menu for options to enjoy at your table or to go! Tucker's also does take out, so you really have not excuse to miss this delightful place.

All in all, I would highly recommend this spot to anyone nearby as it is truly special and unique.

But, here I go. Walking in -- and all throughout my lovely and unforgettable Grantham dining experience -- I could smell fresh, uncooked herbs. It was the kind of aroma that you rarely smell in restaurants so vividly. So after ordering a drink I walked the floors to find out if there was a popular dish. So here is maybe another secret - or maybe just a coincidence for that evening - many tables ordered the main star pasta. There are less than 5 pasta dishes on this menu, so the fettuccini alfredo must must be magic. And because I'm not a local, I wondered how inviting folks would be. I had people at the bar chatting it up with me and they were awesome! I was so impressed that I walked up and asked to meet Helen. She is one awesome and amazing owner! Very friendly and gracious. I ordered the salad and fettuccini with red sauce and they were delicious. The portions are large. Helen's Place of Grantham is the rare place I have no issues spending $18 for a pasta dish on. It's a standard price to pay for pasta dishes in the Upper Valley but I never felt the price was worth it until now. You know, being part Italian, the meatballs are never right, the sauce may be too laden or not flavorful enough, the noodles are not homemade or even al denté. None of these complaints apply at Helen's Place because I loved my pasta! I even had enough to bring home and share. They must use fresh herbs on many of their other dishes, because of the lovely fragrances. And I just love the priorities they use in their culinary choices: fresh ingredients, winning preparation and abundant quantities. The rotating specials menu is also popular. I saw some awesome things I knew would probably be better than elsewhere, ie the jalapeño poppers. And wine and margaritas all being merrily enjoyed together: I'm all in. Loved the dinner, the ambience, the family setting and the fare. This is a lovely find and there is no place I've been in many years with such fresh aromas as Helen's.

In between, people were arriving for dinner and most opted to sit in the bar room where there is a big TV, though I never heard it. In fact, given all the people pouring in, I was surprised it wasn't louder. I spied an Absolut Citron Cosmo on the cocktail menu, and that is the official Cosmo recipe, so I was quick to order it. I was thrilled when our amazing server, Brooke, delivered not only my Cosmo to the table, but a lowball glass with the "dirty" ice the bartender had shaken the drink with and thought to send to the table with the perfectly crafted cocktail! What a great touch! I can't remember the last time I ordered a Cosmo out because I got tired of being disappointed. This one was 100% on the mark. I really want to give Brooke a shout out. I am vegetarian and she was really helpful sharing how they can customize so much of the menu. I had already seen the Impossible Burger on the menu and had my mind made up, but next time I will try the pizza (though the Impossible was perfect and piping hot!). I chose sweet potato fries as my side and they were very thick yet crispy on the outside and tender in the inside. I also ordered Sara's Choice Salad, which was red and green Little Leaf lettuce topped with sliced cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, thinly sliced red onions, blueberries, and big dollops of goat cheese. The maple balsamic vinaigrette on the side was the perfect accompaniment. The coffee is FRESH. Helen's must be one of the only places remaining that dumps coffee if it sits past a certain amount of time. My mother knows her coffee, and she commented on how good it was. The atmosphere is super casual, like a rustic family cabin. Very warm and welcoming, especially on a dark, messy night. Even the patrons were wonderful. I recommend this for a casual date night, family dinner, people of all ages, or if you just want a really good takeout meal. This is a really great local gem and I think I found my kitchen away from home.
