As far as appearance and the building itself, Jake's place is one of the most unique spots I've ever been to. It's as if someone took a house and turned it into a restaurant. There's a tiny eating area inside with about 10 tables. The entry way is tight and filled with all different types of photos and antiques. The dining area is even cooler, with posters, antiques and even a deer head hanging from the wall. As for the service it was okay. I think they were a little short staffed. Every waiter and hostess seemed to be rushing around. I won't take any points off for that considering it's something they can't help. Refills came often and the food came out in 15 minutes for my table of 6. We started with the redneck eggrolls which are fired very nicely. The inside tho is just not good for a eggroll. The collard greens and pulled pork just made for a weird flavor. You'd think it would be fine but it was just mediocre. I will say that the tomato jam it came with was spectacular. It was really sweet and I would add it onto anything on the menu. As for our other appetizer, we go the rockfish but had it delivered as an appetizer. The rockfish itself was bland. It could've used some seasoning of some sorts but the tartar sauce helped a little. The coleslaw was meh, a little too watery for me. The fries are abysmal. I really just didn't like them at all. No crunch and too much fluff. Very potatoey and not enough crunch. As for the main dishes I got the Dixie burger. As far as taste, I was actually very please by it. The bacon was super crispy and flavorful and the fried green tomato was in every bite. There was a generous amount of pimento cheese and the burger was cooked perfectly as well. All the flavors combined very nicely for an evenly distributed burger. Every bite had good crunch, and juiciness. The pimento cheese had just enough of a kick to taste it but not to the point where it wasn't bearable. The potato salad I added to it was good as well. I actually liked the large potato chunks and the small bits of bacon in it. I thought that using a sour cream base gave it almost a baked potato vibe. I would order it again for sure. As for my girlfriend's pork, it was a complete miss. Very dry, not seasoned well and frankly it was flavorless. Very disappointed considering this is a place that prides itself on its bbq. I thought the brisket was a little better. The bbq sauce on top added a nice tang and flavor and the cuts of meat were thick and had good portions of fat too. The Mac and cheese was okay. It was nothing spectacular but it served for a decent Mac and cheese. It played its roll but not a home run by any means. The apple sauce was apple sauce, can't really mess that up. And the hush puppies were decent. I thought they were way too dense on the inside, not enough air and fluff in them. It was like eating fudge but in bread form. The crispiness was excellent though and the flavor was there. For a place that's raved about in its community for its bbq, it really just didn't do it for me. I don't know if I'll ever come back here. The servers were hardworking and it didn't take long to get the food but the food itself just didn't hit the spot for me. I've had much better bbq at other places with much bigger portions for less money. I think if this place could also have better sides and deliver on that, it could be better. Sides are a huge part of a good bbq dinner. This place didn't hit on any of them besides the potato salad. I'd try this spot for yourself though, maybe it has something you'd like, but for me, I'll pass. read more

While I was in the area decided to go to Yelp for recommendations of an awesome place to eat. Oh and the lady at the saddle shop recommended it also. LOL! This place is located in college town but that is what makes it a gem. This is an old gas station that they fixed up as a BBQ joint. This place is so cool inside and out. Not a lot of parking but we managed to find one, probably because we came before the crowds. The place is all about BBQ. They have any and everything, ribs, chicken, pulled pork, homemade sides which were awesome, hush puppies which were the bomb!! We even got a history lesson on the place from the owner. Yes, the owner was walking around introducing himself and checking on folks. They have a small bar with lots of cocktails, beers, wines. They carry the Tim Smith Moonshine and Whiskey. Look him up, he has cool liquors. I tried the Kopperhead and Highly recommended it!!!! It had the Tim Smith Whiskey in it, let me tell you it was liquor up perfect. So you definitely get your money's worth. Service was top notch. Our waiter was the BOMB!!!! From the menu options to the mixed drinks, everything was priced very reasonable. Hush puppies were not dried out and the green beans were perfectly soft and loaded with flavor from the meat they were cooked with. We ran to Hanover farms to get tomatoes & were looking for a nearby restaurant, what we found is our new favorite place. You're in the South & there's BBQ & then there is Jake's BBQ in a class by itself. One thing after another was more delicious so we tried it all. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork, his customer BBQ is delicious, pick up s jar to go. When you're at the table ask for the vinegar based sauce it's indescribable & I'm super picky about my BBQ. I'm a little torn here, because I VERY MUCH wanted to give a rave review. This unique, little restaurant has so much hometown charm and potential, but fell slightly flat on execution. Jake's Place is a renovated gas station immersed in Southern appeal, and boasting local artists' paintings on the walls. I found the menu delightful, featuring classic country fare updated with a modern twist. We started with fried green tomato slices, which they embellished with crumbled feta cheese and a drizzle of thinned honey. The flavor combination was unexpectedly devine! My husband opted for the ribs and pork belly with hush puppies, potato salad, and collard greens. I ordered the shrimp po' boy with onion rings. Hubby said the ribs were seasoned and cooked well, as was the pork belly, but he noted that he could tell the pork belly had been reheated in the microwave, which apparently is a meat smoking sin. The potato salad had an odd sweetness to it, and had just slightly too much mayo for me. The greens were flavorful and prepared well, but came off just a little too salty. The home-made onion rings were especially enjoyable, and I would order them again! Overall, the food was good and would warrant more return visits. However, the restaurant was only about 1/3 full and the service was exceptionally slow throughout. Though we were seated immediately, we waited over 10 minutes for a server. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, but clearly in the weeds. She was hustling, but the wait was still annoyingly long. We were there for 90 minutes, total. Maybe they were short on staff, maybe we caught them on an off night. We would have ordered dessert from their tantalizing sweets menu, but didn't have time. Arrived at 11:40 on a weekday for lunch on a blustery day. 1 server working diligently to take care of the customers in the chilly room. We ordered BBQ sandwiches with fries and baked beans. The meat had a pleasant smoky taste, that I'm sure would have improved if not served lukewarm on cold buns. The tepid beans came out in a small plastic container, barely half of a cup, in contrast to the pile of fries that came out with the other sandwich. They were disappointing, and warming them up wouldn't have made them any better. The beer battered fries were the highlight of the meals... tasty and hot! Granted it's been several years since I've eaten there, but on my multiple visits I had always had good experiences, enjoying the food, and was looking forward to enjoying this visit also. I just can't say enough good things about this place is if the food wasn't enough reason to come the new patio has enclosures around it that makes it an all year feature it would be a great place to have a small reception or private event. I love the homemade sauces. A few times a year I pick up Jakes barbecue sauce it's made all other barbecue sauces obsolete for me. The tomato chutney with the redneck eggrolls is to die for if you go here and do not get the redneck eggrolls for an appetizer you're completely missing the boat. This is a cool, old place, really old. I think it is over 100 years old. Not sure, but it's an historic site. The food was great. We really liked the sweet potatoes, the sweet tea and their desserts. No smokey flavor, wasn't tender at all. Had to be microwaved. The chicken was dry and turned to saw dust in your mouth. Not at all what I expected.
