Just arrived in Ashland for a short visit. Found this establishment on yelp and visitor center's website. Great recommendation. Food and service was excellent. Quaint location in the downtown district with nice ambience. Ate outside and enjoyed the daily special crabcake with green beans and roasted potatoes. Very good. My friend had the iceberg lettuce salad with shrimp, another winner! Would definitely recommend to anyone passing through the area! While visiting Ashland, VA during our layover drive up north, we stopped in to the Ironhorse restaurant for dinner. Cute place, friendly staff and the food was so good. We tried the Caesar salad, wedge salad, short ribs with mashed and Wally's meatloaf. Meatloaf wasn't the favorite but everything else was delish. I only tried the "truffle" fries as there was a very limited menu (no on-line warnings-very disappointing). They were avg fries w sprinkled, meh. The aïoli dipping sauce gave the only flavor. The chardonnay was crisp and tasted fresh. My waiter was accommodating. The ambiance is what was most important that day. In the shade and very relaxing. I went there on Ashlabd train day with plenty of skepticism. They do not have large selection, only one page front and back including the back page only for drinks. Which I actually liked. I had Iron Horse Pan Seared Scallop with mashed Cauliflower My friend had Pan Roasted Scottish Salmon w Risotto. Both came out super tasty. I had Stawbwrry Mojito and my friend ordered Jalapeño Margarita. Both of them were amazing. If I ever go back, that will be for Jalapino Margarita which I had only a few sip only. It was not from frozen margarita, which I often taste in many places. Service was great! On top of everything, it is just besides the train track, a nice place to have food and watch the trains coming and going. Good for the kids, good for the Richmonders to show off the visitors, guests from other cities. I would suggest to book place ahead to seat out side or to get windowview. read more

A surprisingly good find right by the train station in Ashland. The inside feels like a traditional bar with a local train theme to it. Service was excellent throughout. I went with grilled chicken sandwich which was actually one of the better ones I've ever had- good topping and great seasoning. My daughter went with the beer house pretzel- a huge pretzel with a side of cheese sauce, that she loved. The homemade chips were excellent too. It was a great lunch stop off 95. read more

Its hard to get a grip on this place. Terrific location for train fans, right next to the train station. Outside seating seems popular with customers, but we chose to sit indoors. After major negotiations between 2 employees over where to seat us in a mostly empty dining area we are seated. Our waiter took drink orders, which the drinks were ok. Ordered a steak and meatloaf. STEAK WAS TOUGH and the meatloaf was just not great. I failed to mention the meatloaf was ice cold. Did I say the steak was tough? It was damn near inedible. Plus I didn't get a steak knife. Also this dinner took nearly an hour and forty five minutes. Don't go if you are in a hurry. read more

I have dined at the Iron Horse on numerous occasions. The food has always been good. On New Years Eve we ordered off a limited menu and totally enjoyed the fried oysters and crab soup. Tonight, the night before Valentine's Day, we arrived to unexpectedly find another limited menu. The entree choices were not appealing so I ordered a salad and crab soup. The salad was ok but had very little dressing. The crab soup was not at all like what they had served on Bew Years. It was thin and had very little crab. I have been a customer and fan of the Iron Horse Restaurant in Ashland for years. The food has not always been great but it is great more often than not. Went last night and the food was great. What was not great and seemingly bizarre was the service. We arrived to a less than half full place. There were four tables of clients indoors and more outside. The Hosts took five minutes to figure the assigned table. There were three other occupied tables indoors! The waitress took another 10 minutes to greet us. She delivered to us two glasses of warm water, the couple ice cubes melted by the time I took a sip. It literally was like luke warm hot tea I ordered ice tea to drink. And, yes, was hot. Ice melted. The waitress delivered bread to her other table of patrons. We had to ask. We received bread and butter. No plates of any kind to place the bread. I literally put a slice on the table. Did no good. The food was great and we love the ambiance. But, you guys have to fix the service. Just a little attention to detail would measurably build your reputation. Their FOOD, y'all. First of all, I was a bit skeptical about their duck because the only duck I've had is the Asian style way and you know, once you go that route, it's hard to go any other way. But I went on a limb and ordered their duck. Guys, it was FABULOUS. The duck was tender, and juicy, and cooked just right, while the sauce and the mushrooms deepened the savory taste if the duck meat. The risotto was not cooked as well - it was still slightly hard so I left most of it on my plate. I's recommend changing the risotto out for a plantain based dish. It would soften the duck but provide a little sweetness to the dish that I think it lacks. They also had a sweet potato soup that was delicious and I loved that they offered it. Service was great - for a large party, they did ok and we had no direct complaints. The view was nice and we loved seeing the train pass a couple of times too! 10/10 recommend, especially when you can bring kids so they can watch a train through the glass. read more

Another Ashland gem, that's locally owned and operated. This is a great spot to dine in a festive atmosphere with a great staff. They're knowledgeable about the food and the bartenders are great at concocting interesting drinks. I love the boneless short rib dish and my husband loves the pumpkin ravioli. It's the most upscale dining we've experienced in Ashland with an accessible, yet high end menu. They do have burgers and delicious truffle fries and lots more. Well, that was a disappointment! We had reservations for 6:30 on Saturday 3/7 and were seated right away. Our server greeted us and brought us drinks. We ordered entrees. And then we waited. And I ordered another drink. Our entrees were served about 40 minutes after we were seated. The Rib Eye was hot and cooked correctly, a large portion was fat though. The whipped potatoes tasted like instant. Need more milk & butter. The Scallops were beautifully seared...and barely warm. My husband was half done with his steak by the time we got the server's attention. I apologized, but I was sending the Scallops back because they weren't even warm. I waited. When my original plate came back, same Scallops and sides as I sent back, the Scallops were again not hot. I sent the plate back again and said I wanted a new plate for food. By the time it came back the third time, my husband was done eating, the Scallops and sides were the exact ones I sent back despite requesting new food. And I ate the Scallops, because now over one hour since we sat down I was hungry. Our server said she would find a manager and request a discount due to my problems with the food. She ended us bringing us our bill. No discount?! No, she couldn't find a manager. Disappointed. One - no Managers on site in front or back of the house on a Saturday night at 7pm?! Two - employees should be empowered to offer discounts if their customers have a problem with service or food. Three - servers shouldn't have tables both inside and outside...it's harder on them and customers are left waiting and looking for their server. Won't be back. read more

I highly recommend planning ahead and make a reservation. The wait when we arrived was 45 min. But, we had a reservation so we were seated right away. The food did take a little bit to come out. Nothing that was their fault. They had a lot going on. But, our waiter brought out fries for free while we waited. We are patient and understanding so we did not notice the long wait at all. But, once the food arrived it was worth the wait. My salmon was pan seared to perfection. I'd get it over the mashed potatoes instead of the cauliflower risotto instead. Everyone else's meals looked and smelled delicious. My husband enjoyed the muscles. All the burgers looked like they had good buns. Charlie was our waiter. From start to finish he was amazing. The night before the ceremony, Rusty, owner of the Iron Horse, created a truly memorable experience for our team. The food and drinks were outstanding, and the service was excellent. Won't be back. It's the 2nd or 3rd instance I've heard the same person in the back being inappropriate with female work personnel. The blood orange wheat beer was the best beer I've tasted this side of the Atlantic. We had truffle fries, which were mild but very nice. Waiter was great but kitchen couldn't keep up, and with maybe 1/4 of the tables empty, our food still took an hour from order to table. Do not come here before a show at the Ashland Theatre as you'll miss what you came to see. If you have all evening to eat, you'll be fine, and the food is very good. Noisy environment makes conversations difficult, which is why people reserve the outdoor tables. Don't expect explosions of flavor, as the recipes here are more delicate, but tasty. read more

Went for dinner before going to the theater to see a show. This place was absolutely packed. I ordered the filet mignon and it was amazing. Cooked perfectly to how i requested it. Service was good, even though they were crazy busy. The waitress was on top of everything. We had a couple special request with our order. My dinner mate was a vegetarian lol and no issues at all. After a bit, we let the waitress know that we had to get going to the show and she made sure that we were out in the time we needed. Would definitely recommend this place. The bad: after the initial seating we didn't see the waitress again until we asked someone to find her 30 min later for a refill. Magically they appeared .. while we were asking...room temperature .. cheese no longer melted...along with a burger not cooked well done and green beans with absolutely no seasoning We waited another 10 min for a replacement burger. Having just relocated to near Ashland, I had heard people talking about this place. So, 3 of us made reservations for a dinner at 7 pm. There is plenty of parking nearby that is free. Ashland does a great job providing parking! We were seated right when we arrived which was nice and our waitress was very pleasant. We ordered a few craft beers and a glass of wine. We also got a pretzel appetizer. For main entrees, we had the pork chop, meatloaf special and a grilled chicken dish. The menu was more limited than I had expected but it provided some variety. The food was a 3 like the rating. The porkchops was decent but was at $27. My wife had the chicken and did not care for it all. I had the meatloaf and I thought it was pretty good. Another comment on the place- I dont know if it is always like this but it was VERY LOUD in there that night. We could hardly hear each other at the table. One pretty cool thing is that an active rail track goes right in front of it.. so if you are interested in trains at all, get an outside table and enjoy the sights and sounds of the trains as they go by. read more

We watched other patrons get seated after us ... our server checked on us once to ask if we needed anything else to drink and said our food would be coming out "really soon". That was at 8:00. The floor was sticky when we walked in and I hate a sticky floor but the food and service made up for it, both were great. I had the salmon and it was so good, but the best part was the sides were as good as the salmon, I could've eaten a bucket full and it was low carb so bonus. Located in the historic section of ashland, Virginia. This eatery is very close to the train tracks as well as the train station. It features indoor and outdoor dining. Indoors there's both a dining room and a bar with dining available in the bar. Because the bar itself is raised, it does not impose on the diners who choose bar seating. In fact the bar seating may be the best in the house due to proximity to large windows. We stopped in for lunch on a weekday and were promptly seated. Our server did a superb job and had a great knowledge of the menu and was able to suggest pairings. He was always available when needed but never obtrusive. The kitchen was a little slow but nothing to be annoyed about. Not an extensive menu but there was probably something for everyone. We tried the watermelon gazpacho with a house salad as well as the pulled chicken barbecue and a club sandwich. The homemade coleslaw was a little bit vinegary but still not bad. My husband and I were passing through on a 7-hr drive home with our baby and looking for a place to take a break and have a quick dinner. They were kind enough to accommodate us even though we didn't have a reservation. The black bean soup was delicious. The holiday decor was charming and cozy. Everyone was friendly.
