I thought the sandwhich was a letdown it was pretty bland tasting didn't have much flavor the roll was nice and soft and tasted good. We also got chocolate chess pie. Last Friday's lunch decision directed me to this small town delicious spot. I hadn't been there in years. First, I checked out the menu that is posted on the wall, and tried to make the right decision. EVERYTHING is homemade. Ok, I decided on the Tuna Salad on a white homemade yeast roll. You can select one side, so I had cucumber, tomato and onion salad. I couldn't pass up on fresh lemonade and a slice of one of the most delicious coconut pie I've ever had. The lady that took my order was soooo sweet and of course knowledgeable of the menu. I didn't feel rushed, just relaxed. Soooo we had the most interesting conversation that concluded her parents knew my mother back in the day. I didn't expect tears of joy at lunch. It was lovely! I didn't get her name, but I'll never forget her until I return with friends and family to experience this "small town" treasure. Ok, the food. The roll was golden brown, soft and screamed HomeMade. It was filled with a white flaky and well seasoned tuna salad, topped with fresh crunchy shredded lettuce. YUM ! The cucumber, grape tomato and onion salad had a lite vinaigrette dressing. Fresh !! There is freshly made strawberry lemonade, lemonade, Iced tea and the Pepsi fountain drink products. Ok, the star of the show. That slice of coconut pie was Perfect. The crust was brown, very flaky and filled with a thick creamy coconut filling. On a breezy autumn day, a visit to Ashland landed us at Homemades by Suzanne, located very close to the Ashland, VA Train Station on N. Railroad Avenue. This is a lunchtime establishment that also offers catering and to-go boxed lunches. The interior is like a step back to simpler times, with many photographs and portraits by a local photographer, as well as media and memorabilia about the restaurant and its conception and reputation throughout the community of Ashland and Hanover/Richmond region. If you are a little bit anxious about trying new places and not knowing how things work...when you enter from the front, there are tables and booths. There is a large menu on the side wall heading towards the back left side There is also a case full of distracting yummy looking desserts. You can also view the menu and lunch specials on the web, which I highly recommend since you are definitely going to be distracted by those desserts. I had a very lovely lady take my order and push the dessert on me...OK if you insist, carrot cake. While your order is being prepared, there is fountain soda and tea, and then grab a seat until you hear your name called to retrieveyourorder beside the ordering counter. I really didn't know what to expect from the food, I ordered the Hanover Club. I had envisioned a small roll (like a cough cough Ukrop's White House Roll) but what was made for me was more substantial and very generous with its contents. And this was served on an actual PLATE. You really do feel like you are eating at your great aunt's house. Once finished, there is an area where you put your dishes. I've been meaning to come here and since I moved to the area, I Nelly got the chance! Long time coming and I wish I came sooner! My toddler and I had the chicken salad sandwich with potato salad and a side of mac n cheese. All so delicious!! Everything was tasty and just the right portion. We even picked up some dessert for the house- chocolate chunk cookies, peanut butter, M&M and a slice of chocolate chest pie. All so amazing! The workers were so kind and welcoming! It was such a nice day so we sat outside and got to see a train pass by which was an extra treat for my daughter. Headed to Florida on business. The I-95 was shut down due to a bad accident. After being stuck in traffic for over 2hrs was hungry and tired. Took the detour and thankfully found Homemades by Suzanne. I had a fresh roast beef and cheddar sandwich on homemade bread with a simple cucumber tomato salad. The coffee was good too. A local favorite. The people here were genuinely friendly. All the desserts are homemade too. I had their double chocolate cookie that was perfect. Well this was our first visit here and it was selected due to a local fella we met earlier in the day. Well it was a beautiful day to sit outside and watch folks walking and the trains pass. As for our meals. I had creamy white cheese Mac&Cheese and the Grill Chicken sandwich with bacon and parmesan. Both were very good and filling. They wifey had a Chicken Salad Sandwich. She really liked it. Now walking past the desert case, I spotted chocolate chip bread pudding thing. I was very very good. Rich tasting but very good. As for service. There was a line maybe 10 folks ahead of us. It went fairly fast. The ladies did real well moving meals out. Id say we waited maybe 15 minutes for our meals and maybe 10 minutes in line. Again I think they moved us fairly well. We'd eat here again and hope you give it a shot as well. read more

Not a fan of this place although quaint & my wife loves it!! As a guy I have no idea why?? My main reason for not recommending H by S are they are very skimpy on their serving size of food. Example for me was their BBQ Sandwich which had very little meat in it. I had one good bite and then I couldn't find anything else in the bun but sauce. Standing in line to order in a warm restaurant when it's 90+ degrees outside is not a good time for me and given the portion sizes certainly not worth it. Another downer is the effort it takes to get up to get a refill and dodge the people coming through the line to find a table to sit. Very confusing & chaotic. Outside seating is nice with your significant other but only if it's a nice cool day with low humidity. Until they start teaching their staffers loading plates of Food to be more generous I'm afraid I won't be back. read more

For some reason I thought this was a breakfast place and it ended up being more of a sandwich place. I ended up meeting my friend here as I saw the good reviews. I ordered the BLT sandwich with the slaw. The food came out really quickly, but I expected it to be a little bigger. My friend told me it is okay and he came for the company which was nice of him. I have been going to this "hole in the wall" restaurant for years and always find the food good and the staff very friendly. Everything is truly homemade, including their delicious desserts. I was in the area the other day with my college-age grandson who has never been to this location. He also found the food to be great ! If you're looking for really good, locally, made salads and desserts, then this is a must place to visit. Walking in to the cutest atmosphere I wasn't expecting a self serve experience. The quiche I had was bacon and sun dried, it was delicious. The crab cake was on point, but the deviled eggs were a touch bland. Overall the food was good, but for the price I expected a bit more. Customer service was good, but for the price and adorable atmosphere I was hoping for more "southern" hospitality. This is definitely more of a buy and go place, but they offer a large selection of goodies. As a diabetic I didn't have a ton of options but I can see the appeal for sure. read more

Stopped here after my train arrived in Ashland. We waited there standing for 10 minutes. No other customers were waiting or dining. No one helped us or greeted us. The woman behind the counter was counting money and having an argument with another staff member. It was a very weird vibe. The place had a very bad odor. After waiting and being ignored we left. The lobster salad is DELICIOUS. Lots of lobster, creamy, and wonderfully seasoned with dill. We also had the North Carolina BBQ sandwich with coleslaw which was tasty and the meat was so tender. All of their sides looked wonderful, we got a cucumber salad and Greek salad. Both tasty. We didn't get dessert but all of the baked goods looked amazing. The decor is very pleasant with antique plates everywhere. The staff was wearing masks and the seating was spaced out. Indoor and outdoor seating was available. The service was fast! Homemades by Suzanne has been around since the early '80s, and they have a huge catering service as well as a bakery/gourmet deli. I was actually super excited to try this place out, so the hubs and I came here for an early lunch. We ordered: the Lobster Roll (on a toasted garlic herb hoagie roll with sweet dills; this was just not good; it really didn't seem like it was lobster, as it was shredded, and, honestly, it tasted more like imitation crab dressed in mayo); a slice of Broccoli Cheddar quiche (was not a fan of the quiche, as it was wet, and the crust was a bit too sweet); Vegetable Soup (even though it was recently made, it was super watered down and had to be pushed off to the side); the Angel Hair Pasta with a ranch base (the pasta was overcooked and the side was just way too bland); Deviled Eggs (these were okay); Chicken Salad (bland and minced, rather than chunks); Peach Cobbler (hoping that this was housemade, but the filling was straight from a can); and, the Key Lime pie (this was just okay). To wash it all down, we tried the Strawberry Lemonade, and this was also super watered down; we ended up switching to soda from the soda machine. The food was just overall, super disappointing. Most of the items we had ordered was thrown out, as we picked at it and stuck with the side fruit and the deviled eggs. I wished we had the same pleasant and delicious experience as others! In addition, the ordering system was just way too confusing and not organized, as you order in the back by the kitchen, but the staff were just not readily available to take your orders. There was just way too much waiting around to have someone take your orders, receive an incomplete order, and waiting some more to get the rest of the items that you did order! The restaurant itself is cute, as it had old-school wooden booths and various picnic-style tables. There's plenty of street parking on both sides of the tracks. VERY disappointed with lunch today. I have been a huge fan both personally and ordering for my office from the '90's. Today I ordered my favorite chicken salad on croissant and cole slaw. The sandwich had an unspread scoop of the chicken salad only on a very stale croissant. No mayo or lettuce/tomato. Don't know what the slaw was really but it was chopped rather than shredded with I don't even know what else. There was onion which I was assured when ordering was not in it. Dirty .. just walk in and take a look at the display case with her food in it and all mismatched retired home furniture. No ambience at all. She's probably the only game in that small (Ashland )town.
