We noticed a mold spot in one of our bathrooms and contacted our supplementary insurance, who sent out a plumber. The plumber identified a leak in the shower pan and said it was a larger issue that needed to go through insurance. They recommended Jakobsen to assess and provide a quote. Our regular insurance also required a second estimate, which came back similar to Jakobsen's. Jakobsen told us they could complete the work more quickly, so we chose them. There was asbestos involved, which understandably extended the timeline--this part was not Jakobsen's fault, as asbestos treatment and insurance approvals are out of their control. Where things became difficult was communication and project management. Initially, we worked with Michael on mitigation. He was kind, but communication was inconsistent. The process was explained at a very high level, and as first-time homeowners who had never dealt with insurance or restoration work, we were left with a lot of unanswered questions--especially around materials. Our flooring, shower tile, and vanities all needed replacement, but there was no clear guidance on when or how selections would be made. Trying to be proactive, I selected tile and flooring samples early and physically provided them, along with emails and in-person explanations of where the materials could be purchased. Despite multiple follow-ups, I didn't receive clear responses. Mitigation eventually finished, but I was still repeatedly asking about next steps with materials and timelines, often without replies. Then we were assigned a second project manager for restoration. I reached out again, explained everything from the beginning, and asked the same questions. Unfortunately, communication became even worse. By late November--well past the original timeline--we still had no clear completion date, even though we were supposed to host Thanksgiving in our newly purchased home. After several unanswered emails and texts, I escalated by including a regional manager. Only then was there pressure to provide a timeline, though even then it remained vague. During this period, the communication felt dismissive and, at times, rude--which was frustrating as a paying customer. I manage staff myself, and the lack of professionalism stood out. Eventually, the project manager met us at our home. The tone of the conversation was noticeably different when speaking to my fiancé versus me, which was uncomfortable. I don't want to assume intent, but as a Latina woman, the interaction did not sit well. Transparency and respect should not depend on who is speaking. This was also the first time anyone mentioned that it would be easier if we purchased the materials ourselves. Had this been communicated earlier, we would have done so immediately and avoided weeks of delay. Once I finally had the information I needed (how much tile, vanity size, etc.), I was able to source discontinued flooring within minutes through a Yelp-recommended vendor and had it shipped cross-country within a week. Despite further delays, Jakobsen completed the job on Christmas Eve, which I genuinely appreciated since we were hosting Christmas Day. Having two functioning bathrooms again was a huge relief. I want to be clear: many of the on-site staff were kind, professional, and did solid work. This review is not about them. The core issue is project management and communication. Clients--especially first-time homeowners--need clear expectations, consistent follow-up, and aligned communication between managers. Jakobsen could be a much better company with improved customer service training, clearer processes, and better internal coordination. Unfortunately, based on our experience, I would not hire them again. We were referred to Jakobsen Restoration by the plumber insurance sent to address a leak under the kitchen sink. Jakobsen was fantastic with helping us navigate the ins and outs of insurance, as well as with the restoration aspect of water damage. Had we left it at that, we would have been thrilled with our experience with Jakobsen. Rather, we chose to include the install of our expensive, custom kitchen cabinets, specifically because they were insured. We thought we were doing everything we could to prevent anything from going sideways with our expensive cabinet investment by going with them for the installation. The cabinet work was started and completed in the span of one afternoon. We noticed some chipped paint and scratches on the faces of our brand new cabinets, some nails protruding through the inside of some cabinets, and a couple haphazard doors, but it was not until the counter install guys came out to measure everything that we realized the extent of the issues. The counter install guy was done in under 10 minutes: he told us to call him back to take measurements once the kitchen island was leveled and an actual rectangle. What we came to realize was that the island cabinets were never screwed to a wall resulting in the legs of the island flaring out. Moreover, the cabinets were far from level. When we reached out to Jakobsen Restoration about getting this fixed, we were told it was the flooring guys' fault; it was the electrical guy's fault. It was anyone else's fault but that of their own guy. According to them, there was no conceivable way it was their fault. Upon further inspection, the two end cabinets were never screwed in. There wasn't even a screw hole! The project manager tried to blame our electrician for unscrewing it and the flooring guys for moving it, but there wasn't even a screw hole in the first place. They accepted no accountability at any point in this conversation. The cabinet and each end of the island were just sitting there, without being properly fastened to the pony wall. Because of this rushed work, our counter install was delayed by almost a month. After a lot of back and forth, and blame for anyone and everyone else but themselves, Jakobsen finally sent the cabinet guy to screw the end cabinets in. Something that should have been done in the first place. He was also supposed to mount the faux cabinet doors at the ends of the island, but that final task was ignored, as was any further communication by the project manager. The scratched faces of some of our brand new cabinets are a constant reminder of their shoddy work. Their mistake cost us thousands to repair. But the worst part? We couldn't host family for Christmas this year and had to completely pivot at an added cost. The cabinets were installed on November 29th. Because of the delays, the counters didn't go in until December 23rd. This glitch put our project so far behind, we could not host family in an ongoing construction zone. My biggest complaint with Jakobsen Restoration was the lack of ownership for mediocre and even poor work. If you want to pretend that the cabinets were out of place for any reason other than faulty craftsmanship, you are not an honest broker. read more

We originally contacted Jakobsen to help with water damage to our wood floor that was coming in from our ground floor patio. We chose them at that timed based on positive reviews after substantial research. We had a great experience working with Lior for this initial project. His team took out the damaged wood, treated it for mold, and then we decided to pause the project while we figured out what to do with the damaged floor. Fast forward a few months and we had a pipe leak in our bathroom that damaged our floors upstairs and downstairs. Our insurance company referred us to a different restoration company, but we elected to continue working with Jakobsen since we had already started with them on the other leak. The demo went well and the team was super nice. They packed out everything in our home and put it in storage while they replaced the floors. They communicated with our insurance agent to get the expenses covered and sent us invoices after they knew we had received payments from the insurance company, which was helpful for our cashflow. The project took longer than we expected, but we had anticipated that might happen. We had never done a construction project before, but have heard that they often take longer than the original expectation. While the Jakobsen team was working, we noticed that they were using our expensive patio furniture to store their tools on. We asked the team multiple times to please be careful with the furniture, as the teak chairs are over $2000 each and they were brand new, delivered to our home after the project had already begun. Unfortunately, we noticed that one of the slats on the teak chair was cracked in half. When the Jackobsen team moved our furniture back in, we also noticed that the pieces we had asked them to take specific care of - expensive furniture that we received as wedding gifts last year - was damaged. We expected some light damage because we didn't expect everything to be moved and come out unscathed, but the damage that was done was, in our opinion, excessive. It was clear that the pieces had not been wrapped or padded for moving or storage. We felt that the moving team did not treat our belongings with care. We alerted the Jakobsen team; they were very responsive and they worked with us to replace items that were destroyed and sent in a furniture repair specialist to restore our damaged dressers, tables, and chairs. They were reasonable in their negotiations to address the destroyed and damaged items. Our biggest difficulty - furniture damage aside - was with the quality of the flooring install. Most of the quality issues were easily fixed by having the team come back out and glue or nail down the floor planks. We have had a couple areas that are not level or make a big popping sound when we step on them. We have had the team out 3 times to try to improve these areas. They said they did the best they can and we basically got tired of trying different ways to fix it, so we decided it's good enough and we can live with it the way it is. Communication with the team was hit and miss. The team rarely included both me and my husband on communication. It seemed like their default was to communicate with him, even though he and I make all the decisions together and I was the one who always paid the invoices. We also had a difficult time understanding what our invoices were for (i.e., materials cost, man hours, etc.), especially when we had to pay out of pocket for some of the work, like redoing the stairs, which our insurance wouldn't cover. On the whole, the job was adequate, but there were a lot of headaches that we think could have been avoided. Since we've never done a project like this before, we have nothing to compare it to. I would avoid these guys like the plague. ......... Original review: I have real concerns about the integrity of Jakobsen restoration in San Diego. They were hired for mold remediation.. They sent out an employee without a business card, credentials or anything but a hoodie that said Jakobsen. The young man claimed to have an IICRC WRT certification (An Online cert that does NOT qualify him as a mold expert). IICRC does offer certifications for mold remediation experts. This person did not have that certification. The young man made many assertions about the dwelling and how mold growth works that were factually inaccurate (based on the other experts that have viewed the property) , he then began stuttering when I pointed out the inconsistency of his statements with other experts and his void of common sense and application of assumptions (such as we are on a slab (we are second story!) and then defaulted to being condescending and rude. Jakobsen Restoration was assigned by our insurance company to handle water mitigation, demolition, and restoration after a flood in our home (September 2025-January 2026). Our experience varied significantly between teams. Restoration / Build Out Team - Excellent Our project manager, Larry Ingramm, was outstanding. He submitted a thorough and accurate scope to our insurance, brought in qualified outside vendors when specialized work was needed, and approached every issue with creativity and persistence. His communication was timely, his team's work was high quality, and their professionalism was consistent throughout. We highly recommend Larry and his crew -- he earns 5 stars from us. Mitigation & Demolition Team - Significant Issues This team, led by Mike Ortiz, responded quickly and worked hard to address the initial water damage. However, they overloaded a circuit by running eight drying units on the same line, causing three outages -- the last resulting in a major power failure in half our home that required an electrician to repair. If Jakobsen Restoration is assigned to your home, we strongly suggest requesting that they use a generator for high demand equipment. The team also handled packing and storage. Boxes were sealed with painter's tape rather than usual packing tape. Minimal packing materials were used, which lead to damage and breakage. Their inventory system consisted only of photos, because as we have now been told, the company was in between two different providers of the industry standardized method for inventorying, and were using this as their temporary method. The interior of our home was ready to reoccupy a month before the garage was finished. We ended up unpacking 35 boxes of items for closets, dressers, and five file cabinets ourselves. No crew was provided to assist, despite this being part of the work billed to insurance. Their crew came at the very end to unpack the 25 boxes in the garage as best as they could being limited to the picture inventory method used. On two occasions, Mike raised his voice at us. His demeanor was not that we would expect from a Project Manager. Based on our experience, Mike earns 1 star. We do want to acknowledge Jacob, a crew lead who was consistently helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. He earns 5 stars from us. Subsequent to writing our initial review, at our request, we met with overall Project Manager, Mike Werner. We found him to be very personable, open to hear our observations and suggestions, and genuinely surprised by some of the atypical things we experienced. We hope he is able to use the information to better the performance of their team members to whom it will be helpful. We feel he listened and cared about what went wrong on our job. Lior is the BEST. I had a leak at late evening, and was looking for a plumber but the other guys I called, mentioned that since its after hours, they would charge $150 bucks for just showing up. Lior was different, He immediately set an appointment for that night to come check and do a diagnosis of the problem. The next day Lior and his team fixed the leak. They had to open up the wall from downstairs to upstairs. the leak was coming from upstairs bathroom. I also worked with his team to dry all the wet areas and path the wall afterwards. He even suggested to fix my other wall which he suspected was wet and could cause mold in future at no extra charge. Lior is a very good at his job, professional and he is always on time. If I could have given them 0 stars I would have!!! It would take pages of space to cover how bad the work was. It started when we had an unfortunate leak that left our kitchen under about an inch of water. (I won't go into details now). I called a number of companies for help both in mold remediation as well as cabinet and wall board restoration. The owner came out and assured me it would be completely restored. Of the 6 companies I solicited, only Jakobsen gave us a quote for both. Everyone else only quoted for remediation with a restoration quote as part of a separate second phase/project. I chose Jakobsen bc they combined the quotes and that made me more comfortable as well as having a 4.9 on yelp with 75 reviewers!! Once the project started, the first set of workers came out to do a demo of the lower kitchen cabinets but saved the doors (obviously). They stacked them in my garage but in the process scratched and gouged a couple!! Once the doors were removed, two men from JR (Jakobsen Restoration) took measurements of the cabinet shells to duplicate what we had; only later to find out that the guys measuring for new cabinets were not the same guys that were building the new ones. That turned out to be a fatal error. To cut to the chase, workers showed up unexpectedly and others didn't show up when they were scheduled. The cabinets were measured incorrectly and a strip of molding had to be inserted to cover their incorrect measurements. The final product was poor from both a fit and finish standpoint. I could go on for days but my hands are getting tired. AFTERTHOUGHTS In closing it is imperative that YOU TAKE PHOTOS OF THE "BEFORE" of your room so that if you see scratches or any other deviation from the original, you have proof. Depending on the newness of your home, you may have an issue with asbestos. We were told we did by JR's asbestos guy but a second opinion proved that to be incorrect and would have otherwise cost us thousands more dollars. read more

They were very considerate in not demolishing anything that would be costly to repair, as we still had to hear back from insurance about how much would be covered.
