Jakova Grill is located in a strip mall and from outward appearances you'd think it was just another one of many similar small establishments in the area....that is, until you try the food. They make everything in house and I have to tell you the food was simply outstanding. We ordered Cevapi with a side of Kajmak, which also came with bread, pickled peppers and a cabbage salad. My wife and I have trouble with cabbage so the waiter kindly substituted French fries, which were also excellent! We had only recently been exposed to Cevapi at a restaurant nearer our home which serves it from time to time. It was so good we wanted to see if we could find a restaurant that specialized in such food. We did some research and took a road trip, driving almost two hours to try the Jakova Grill. It was worth the trip. The waiter was friendly and patient, obviously proud of the food dishes they served and rightly so. He told us about the dishes, made some good suggestions and brought us samples to try. We had a wonderful experience and will surely return in the future. We were pleasantly surprised by the bill. Eating out is so expensive these days but the prices at the Jakova Grill were very reasonable in our opinion. read more

Holy foreign food jackpot! If you need to get your Balkan grub on, then this is your place! No need to purchase 15k in airfare to eat the foods of the Mother land. The lady who greeted us probably had a gold tooth, which reminds me of my aunts and their big hair in the 80s - which gives this place authenticity! I LOVE IT! Burek, CHECK! Samuna, CHECK! Kajmak, CHECK! And so much more people, remember to bring an extra stomach. The only thing that is missing are bigger tables because well we need to make room for all the foods. Please don't judge my inner fat kid who is still fat because of Balkan food. I blame my culture for being responsible for creating deliciousness out of basic ingredients. I've never had Albanian food before and I was anxious to try it. We were so excited we tried several dishes. We started with the mixed plate which has qebapa and qofte in a homemade sour cream sauce. Both were amazing. The seasoning was perfect and I loved watching the food being freshly made. We also tried file, the beef was tender and savory with just the right amount of cheese. We also tried the amazing homemade suxhux which is a slightly spicy sausage. The grosh beans were perfect as was the cabbage salad. The food here is amazing and everything is made fresh, on site every day. This is a place we will come back to many times. read more

Fantastic Albanian cuisine. I came in here on a weekday afternoon for a quick lunch, and Jakova Grill really hit the spot. The clientele seemed to mostly consist of Albanian men on their lunch breaks, and the waitress was very courteous and friendly. She asked if I was a first-timer, and took the time to explain what the menu items were. I decided to go with the mixed plate, which includes 5 qebapa (spiced skinless sausage very similar to Bosnian ćevapi), 3 qofte (the Albanian take on kofta - kind of like mincemeat and onion meatballs), and kajmak cream (somewhat similar to cream cheese, though not quite as thick and with more of a "cheesy" taste). This also came with an order of simple cabbage salad with oil and vinegar and some wonderfully fluffy bread. The whole meal was simple, unpretentious, and delicious. The qebapa was the best I've ever had, beating out the only other Albanian restaurant I know of in the region (Kalaja Restaurant on Dequindre), as well as Palma Bosnian Restaurant in Hamtramck. The kajmak was so rich and creamy, and made a perfect accompaniment to the meat dishes - the mixed plate can be served with or without kajmak, so definitely make a point to get it! The only downside is that the food is a bit pricey for what it is ($15 with tax and tip), but it's worth it for such a rare kind of pleasure in the Detroit area. It's also worth noting that this restaurant has very few vegetarian offerings. However, the goofy Albanian music videos they have playing on the TV are a plus, and just hearing Albanian being spoken in the background was pretty neat. I'll definitely be coming back to try their suxhuk (spiced sausage) and xhevreka (beef and mozzarella patty). read more

So. Used this to be uncle Johns and ownership changed in June, New sign says Javoka grill. I entered and was asked what I wanted after making a little noise so they knew I was there,( I had to ask if they were open) I was then offered a western omelette, they handed me an uncle Johns menu after I agreed to the omelette. Very confused and uncomfortable environment, was never asked if I wanted a drink. Some family or friends came in to eat and the owner/cook sat and ate with them what looked like a more traditional Albanian plate of food. Used to be a friendly diner, now feels like a private family friends only establishment. I also sat at the bar and the only thing I noticed was the dirty rags piled up under the grill (mind you this is at opening 10:30am) Did not see what Brian A saw at all. This is the best Traditional Albanian food you'll find in the metro Detroit area. Their food is always fresh, and their service is friendly and the owners are amazing people. Big fan of former Uncle Johns now called Jakova Grill with new owners and all new staff. Went last Saturday with a local friend and the food is excellent, especially the Albanian menu items. Going back later today to try the Wednesday "special", Hungarian-style Goulash! Still seem to be getting things organized, but the great food trumps all other comments! read more
