Puffy Tacos
Tony A.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of Puffy Tacos rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night Hopefully that song is stuck in your head now. If that dark desert highway is Route 7 and that shimmering light in the distance is Sombrero's Mexican Cantina you're in the right place. In the Shawnee Crossing retail center is lil' old Sombrero's Cantina. I was meeting family here who live 500 yards away and what can I say? If you're looking for standard issue Tex-Mex\American food you're in the right place. You asked for pork but they gave you ground beef? You're in the right place. The waitress was a total sweetheart and on a first name basis with my in-laws; you're in the right place. On Yelp the business is unclaimed and unbothered. I don't live here so I'd recommend reading the reviews from Yelpers living in Shawnee, KS. Good luck and God bless.

Puffy taco with cheese enchilada

Puffy taco heaven at Sombrero's in Shawnee. On the menu every day, not just a special! I know puffy tacos basically have their own fandom, and the ones at Sombrero's are some of my favorites! Light, crispy shell stuffed with meat and toppings. Paired with a cheese enchilada and 1/2 rice/beans you have a great combo.

Margarita

The food was pretty bland, not a lot of seasoning on anything. We were very confused by the margarita color. Thought she got water. The margaritas didn't have flavor either! Food did come out really fast and the staff was friendly

Chicken flautas with corn tortillas

We stopped in today for lunch for the first time. We were seated quickly and a server came up quickly also. The chips and salsa were good and my husband had their $5 Sangria special. The Sangria was very tasty and a good price. My husband had the lunch special of two cheese and onion enchiladas with a choice of beans and rice. I had their starter of chicken flautas for a meal and it came with a small ball of sour cream and guacamole. My husband was very pleased with his meal. The chicken in my flautas was tender but unfortunately flavorless. The restaurant was clean as well as the bathrooms. The biggest negative to me was when I asked for an extra guacamole, which was a small ball like the one on plate (tablespoon size), on the bill they charged $3.00. That price was outrageous for the AMOUNT given. Literally $3 for a tablespoon of guacamole. I spoke to the waitress about it and she said she didn't make the prices and I said that I understood but I would like my comment delivered to the manager as I felt the price was excessive for the amount. So my husband saw a young man and asked him if he was the manager and he said he wasn't but had worked there for many years. So we just told him that the fee was shocking for the amount and it would be nice if they mentioned it upon ordering. I expect a $1.00 or $1.50 but not $3 for a tiny amount. For $2 extra dollars I could have gotten another Sangria!

Vegetable street taco

My soft shell, vegetarian street taco was mediocre because the vegetables were undercooked and somewhat crunchy. Otherwise the ambience was bright and clean. And the servers were the best!

Barbacoa Taco A La Carte

I went with a group of 4 for lunch. There was plenty of seating and our server was great. The wait was extremely short between ordering and getting our food. I ordered a barbacoa and asada taco. These tacos were just ok. The barbacoa was very watery. I would not return for the food, but service was quick, efficient and had great customer service so it may be a good option for a quick lunch.

The Sombrero's Burrito

honestly not much to say about it...it was an okay burrito definitely not a mexican place on my go back list.

Chicken fajitas
Sydney D.

This place really surprised me! It is definitely more Tex mex. However, the puffy tacos were really, really good, even though they weren't totally crispy like a traditional puffy taco. The meat portions are huge. The fajitas were great as well, and we love how many peppers were in them, as supposed to mostly all onions like other local places. Each time our service has been friendly and fast. The margaritas are really different. Hard to explain. They almost seem to lack lime? I can't put my finger on it. Not sure I like them. So miss on that. I think this place is great for what it is. A consistently good option that is close to our neighborhood. If you come in with high expectations for this place, you'll most likely be disappointed, as it's not anything special. It is however decent for the price and convenience.

We were seated and waited 15 minutes without even being greeted at the table for drinks. So we left. Wasn't that busy.

It was a good midnight snack. I got the Barbacoa taco and shrimp taco. Both had tons of flavor, and two was plenty for dinner. The margaritas were excellent! Since you order at the counter, we didn't have a ton of experience with the staff, but everyone seemed friendly and the shop is well maintained We did eat inside, and there were definitely people outside, taking advantage of the patio

It gave an option for dining with a group of people or simply dining alone. We arrived around 1pm on a week day, so just after the lunch rush which was perfect. The food was made fresh, I've always wanted to try the barria taco but no one seems to offer anything but a beef option. And finally, I found a chicken one. It was Delish !! Now I couldn't dip in the au just because it was beef but I appreciate having the option. The Mexican rice was light and flavorful. The queso was good however it stiffened up pretty quickly, just in case you feel the anxiety of choosing between. Your appetizer and the main costs course. Over all, a great experience for a late afternoon lunch. Check out it when your craving tacos, I don't think you'll be disappointment.

Walking in you'll find it's a very bright, cheerful atmosphere, very clean, with about ten tables (I think), and two tv's playing Spanish music. The people are nice and very efficient. Chef Joseph is phenomenal. He was manning the register when I went in. I'd never been to a Mexican & Salvadoran restaurant before. I'm familiar with Mexican American food, a little bit with truly authentic Mexican, and not at all with Salvadoran. Chef Joseph came out from behind the counter and sat at my table explaining the menu to me, the dishes, the flavor profiles. He gave suggestions on what order based on what I told him I liked. I got one of the combo dishes mainly because it offered a variety of proteins and side dishes. I also saw several more items in the menu that I knew I wanted to try on my next visit. The food was delicious! I surprised myself by finishing the whole plate. I was also delighted to find La Cocina De Mary had atole. It's a traditional cold weather drink made with masa harina, milk, and spices. My tia made it when I was a kid, so there's fond memories. This one was better ... and lucky for me tia isn't on Yelp and will never read this. They have soft drinks and a few alcohol drinks that I may try next time. The one that's a bloody mary except with beer instead of vodka sounded interesting. Next time I go, I'm taking FPO with me. This is a great little place and I hope they're there for a long time to come.
