We gave Jalapenos a whirl during a quick stop in Sandpoint. The restaurant is big, colorful and friendly. They've been in this spot for twenty years so you know something good is happening. The booth was plenty roomy, a must for a wide load like me. The service was prompt and friendly. They brought the biggest basket of chips I've ever seen in my seventy-years of Mexican dining! I enjoyed a nicely made margarita while munching on that giant basket. My wife ordered the carnitas plate and I had my usual cheese enchiladas. The plates were huge and delicious. If you are looking for Mexican food; this isn't the place to go. It's not authentic; I'm Mexican and cook authentic Mexican food so I absolutely know what it should and should not taste like. Ordered carne asada tacos, they were seasoned wrong, lots of cumin, not grilled meat. Lettuce in the tacos, yuck. Really bad corn tortillas that fall apart as soon as you pick them up. Guacamole doesn't even taste like avocado, but rather filler and onion seasoning. My husband ordered enchiladas and wouldn't eat them after tasting the sauce he said it was so bad. I tasted it and will say seasoning is wrong, tortillas are not good. Refried beans are terrible tasting and texture is bad. They say you can judge if Mexican food is good & authentic from how good the beans are, terrible. I let the waitress know we couldn't eat the food. She sent the manager over who was nice enough to not charge us for the meals but he seemed pretty pissed off and took it personal. Oh well, when you make good Mexican food & are Mexican yourself, there is a standard if you are going into business selling this cuisine and if you can't accept the feedback that's your problem to fix. *** For those reading, I do not work for ANY Mexican Restaurant period. I just know what good authentic Mexican food tastes like and this food is absolute trash. It tastes terrible and the so called Manager has a bad attitude and can't handle a critical review. Don't waste your time or money. Also my husband served this country for 26-years in the U.S. Military and just wanted a good meal after a long drive, we wouldn't lie about our review. Jalapeños has great food! We have eaten at various Mexican restaurants and sometimes the food is flavorful and sometimes not. Jalapeños knows how to cook it right. The portions are large (we get two meals out of it). The only negative is they are closed on Thursday. read more

We have been coming here for a while but the last 3 times over about 4 months has been really disappointing. I think worse with each visit. I had pollo ala crema and I don't think there was anything "crema" about it. It's terrible. Over seasoned and nothing good about it. I got some sour cream on the side Hoping it would help. It didn't. The guacamole might have had a tiny bit of avocado, but very little. They are clearly using some kind of filler. It was gross. And brown. And gross. My husband had carne asada and we have had this many many times and know what it's supposed to taste like. This has no seasoning, isn't grilled and just a very pale comparison to what it should be. We decided to come here to check it out. It was a Friday night as was quite busy. Walking in you are greeted by the host right away. She was very nice and seated us promptly. We were greeted by our server relatively quickly even though he had the bar area as well. We ordered our drinks. Then the chips and salsa came out. The chips were decent and were warm when arriving at our table. They also give you two types of salsa, mild and hot. The beers were nice and cold, martini was smooth and at a good price, and they made a mean pineapple mojito! We all ordered and it didn't take too long to get our food. The tacos were great! BF ordered a taco and tamales. He enjoyed both. His dad and mother-in-law enjoyed their food too. The food had great flavor. Our server Patrick was great! Whenever I come to Sandpoint to visit family I always make it a point to dine at Jalapenos! The chicken flautas are superb and the burritos are huge! We like Jalapenos so much that we had two events catered at our home. They brought everything necessary and served both a fine lunch and a dinner. Everyone there has always been friendly and helpful and the catering staff at the events went above and beyond to make sure everyone got a nice hot meal. I'll be back! read more

So, this establishment did not show up in Yelp results until I searched for it directly using the Search tab in the app. This tells me that either Yelp prioritizes results on paid searches or there is a major glitch in their search engine. This establishment has been here for over 25 years and is amazing. There is no reason I can think of why they would not show up in search results when you are physically located nearby as was my case. I was staying at the Edgewater Resort and they are definitely nearby. The food is amazing, service was amazing and house margaritas are the bomb dot com. Definitely visit! read more

I was excited to eat at Jalapeños because I have never been here. I've been everywhere else in Sandpoint. When we came in we were told there was a wait of 15 minutes by a hostess who didn't smile. She was backed by the also, unamused manager. It was a little (very) unwelcoming but I had been on Yelp and the food pictures looked good and the wait time made me believe it must be delicious. So we waited. The chips and salsa arrived and the salsa was good. The food arrived and had issues. My taquitos were burnt and my partners veggies were not fully sautéed - so raw. Our nice waiter, took them back- I asked for a bean burrito instead and he brought out the second round pretty quickly. My partner was happy because this time he got cooked veggies. My bean burrito needed salt in the beans so was just kinda meh. No salt and pepper on the table - so that was a bummer. As I said- they were busy, so that made getting refills on water (and/or asking for salt) hit or miss. They really needed some back up. We went to Jalapeños around 530 this evening and the place didn't look busy at all. There were 6 of us and we were told to wait so we sat down in the lobby and about 5 mins later, another party of 6 walks in and they were seated immediately. (No they did not have a reservation.) We also heard the hostess ask where they were going to put us to another employee once we told her there were 6 of us. Anyhow once we saw the other party seated before us, we got up and decided to eat elsewhere. We ended up eating at Rancho Viejo in Hayden and they were super friendly and had amazing food! I love this place. The carne asada burrito is to die for... perfectly seasoned and cooked pieces of steak with salsa and cheese and sauce. Yum!!! Also their shredded steak burrito is amazing too - super tender and lots of flavor. I'm a big fan of all the sauces and salsas they use. Their chicken quesadilla is great too, but I like the kids one because it is just cheese and shredded chicken. The diced chicken is too dry. Their rice is also great although some claim not authentic - this is Idaho, you guys. If anything, a must at this place is the huckleberry lemonade (or margarita!) and a fried ice cream.
