Yesterday we were in Evanston and found this gem on Yelp. We got there about 6pm and the small parking lot was packed. Which is always a good sign. Like others have mentioned the outside looks like it's a little rundown but it also makes you feel like you're in Mexico. We had to wait for a table but they hustle the wait staff had is amazing. We got in quick. My husband had carnitas tacos. I had Shrimp Camarones. They were so good and the portions are huge. They were served Fajitas Style so lots of vegetables surrounded them. My husband, sister-in-law are traveling from California to Michigan making stops along the way... We stopped at this establishment for an early dinner... We ordered the chicken burrito, the wet burrito and the carne asada dinner plate.. By far the best Mexican food I've had in years and California is known for there excellent food.. -The service was above and beyond... -The ambiance was great and again the food was right on point! We were trying to find a place after a wonderful drive on the mirror lake highway. This had some great reviews so we went. At first we thought it was the place with the big sign and we debated between the 2 because this place is kind of old and beet up outside. We decided to give it a try. In the inside it was real cute and had a home feel to it. The servers were so friendly and the service quick. The place was full by the time we left. The food was very good but lacked a bit of flavor. Had the tacos that you can order how many ever you want. I had 2 chicken and 2 carne Assad. The chicken was a bit dry but the carne Assad was great. I'm glad I chose carnitas tacos, the first bite and I was transported back to when I was 12 at Gardunos taco king in Rosemead CA. The tacos tasted exactly like that. The salsa, rice and beans are fantastic. My wife and I had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated, it was well worth the wait. My wife had the bacon wrapped shrimp and another hit with us. We will be sure to return to Evanston to try more of their dishes. It small but the servers were wonderful and to serve the number of people eating it was a well oiled machine. As a born and raised Texan, I was not expecting good Tex-Mex in this area of the US, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ambiance: dirt parking, inside was bustling and the workers were hustling. Service: Quick and efficient. Literally got chips and salsa a couple of seconds after I sat down. Food: Shared a steak fajita burrito with the special sauce. The portion was enough for two and was so delicious. I'm also skeptical of fajitas outside of Texas but it exceeded my expectations! So good! We first ate there on a road trip and when we happened to be back in the area a few weeks later, it was our first stop. Though it was near closing, they were still busy and the place was packed. It is obviously a local favorite. Staff was welcoming and friendly. Definitely on our "must do" list when in the area because there are a few more items we want to try on the menu. read more

Luckily, we got to the restaurant a bit early because this popular place got very busy, very quickly. Don't let the outside deter you from stopping. Really great place and parking for large vehicles (that's a plus for me since I often travel with a trailer in tow). I love chile relleno and this was another great one. Very simple and done well. Super tasty alone and even better with the house hot sauce. The service was great as well. It's table/wait service despite being a small dining room. It's clear that the locals come here, which is always a good sign. From the outside, it doesn't give the impression of a great restaurant, but often those are the best. Don't assume anything based on the exterior. There is a friendly, clean, and delicious restaurant inside. We were greeted upon entering and told to sit wherever we liked. Menus, chips, and salsa were immediately brought to us. I got the lunch tostada and enchilada combo without meat. The rest of my group got burritos and a chili relleno plate. This is a great restaurant. The salsa is fresh with a tiny bit of heat. Coming from So Cal, we love our Mexican food. I like a medium heat, but the salsa was more towards mild. The waitress wouldn't share the type of red chilies they used. Hubby and I both ordered the carnitas plate. Me with corn tortillas and he had flour. We were both given 4 tortillas- more than enough. We both only used 3. Now the carnitas are done right, better than I've had in California. Perfectly crispy on one side yet tender and moist. My carnitas were cooked with onions and peppers, hubby's weren't. The rice was okay but not memorable. The beans were delicious! Go and eat here if you want authentic Mexican food. People were constantly coming in to eat or get takeout. I'd go back here without a question. read more

We stopped on our way through Evanston. The service was friendly. The staff was laughing a lot and it was clear they are close knit and having a good time. We got the tacos Al carbon, a beef chimichanga, and a bean and cheese burrito and rice and tortillas for the kids. The waitress brought me a chicken chimichanga but that's okay--the chicken was juicy and it tasted good. Honestly I was torn between chicken and beef anyway, lol. All the food was very good--beans and rice like my grandma makes. Ambiance is a little run down but everything is serviceable. We would definitely stop here again. The pictures of pickles on food in the windows had us worried but no pickles appeared on our plates, so no problems with the food whatsoever! read more
