We decided to try this restaurant tonight. I read the reviews and looked at the photos. Nice place, servers were attentive and not pushy. They were not to crowded tonight but it was the day after the Labor Day weekend. Once seated, they brought us chips and salsa (green good flavor not too spicy and a red sauce that had some kick according to my wife- I didn't think it was too hot).I had a 2 item combo and went with 2 Tamales (one beef and the other chicken) served with rice and beans. Both tamales had good flavor and I enjoyed the Rice & Beans that came with my dish. My wife had the California Burrito with Steak. She liked her burrito. Nice size serving. Right off the bat, I was so mesmerized by the colorful display they have from left to right inside their restaurant. What we ordered: Shrimp ceviche Enchiladas suizas Carne Asada Plate Pollo Asado Tacos FOOD: 8/10 Their food was flavorful, with hearty portions, and best of all, served piping hot! Chevy's could never! LOL. The shrimp ceviche was fresh; however, we wished it had more of the citrusy juice and was a bit dry. The cubed mangoes were a nice fresh addition to the ceviche. SERVICE: 10/10 The nicest staff to stumble upon. We were helped by 3 different people, and each of them was so kind and attentive. AMBIANCE: 10/10 Their ambiance is everything, whether it is inside or outside. Outside, there is a lot of nice seating to enjoy the weather. I can only imagine how it looks at night with the twinkle lights on. Inside was so beautiful and eye-catching. There was color everywhere, and I truly loved their rainbow-pattern theme, papel-picados and mariposas displayed all throughout the restaurant. The service was very good. Staff was courteous and accommodating. Inside was beautiful with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo paintings adorned on the walls and papel picado hanging from the ceilings. Many choices on the menu but limited meat option. Extensive cocktail menu with lots of different kinds of margaritas. Love that the chips and salsa arrives shortly after you sit. We ordered: Taco Salad with carnitas - good amount of salad. Lots of cheese and toppings but not a lot of carnitas. I wish the carnitas had more flavor. I've seen this place many time when I'm in Los Altos and I finally had a chance to try it out. I was really excited to try this place because you can never go wrong with Mexican at any time. Came on a Tuesday and it was empty, but was greeted right away. The interior decor and set up of the place looks amazing. Has that authentic feel to it, but unfortunately the food doesn't. Got asada super nachos and flautas. Super nachos were ok like nachos. Most of the chips were really soggy and I wasn't a fan of the melted cheese used. We stopped by today and had a very nice lunch. Parking in the front is minimal. There is additional parking in the back. The inside of the restaurant has plenty of seating as well as outdoor seating. The decor inside is very colorful and fun. We got there right when they opened and were seated quickly. We were quickly served chips and salsas and cold water. The chips were great and the salsas were delicious and not too spicy. They had a small menu with Dia de los Muertos specials, as well as their regular menu. My husband tried the three tamale combo on the special menu and I ordered the enchilada Azteca with chicken. We also ordered guacamole and chips and two margaritas. The guacamole was amazing. We really enjoyed that. I had the premium margarita and thought it was okay. My hubby had the La Catrina Margarita with blackberries. This was on the Dia de los Muertos menu. He really liked it. Our food came out quickly. We both enjoyed our main meals. All three tamales were delicious and the chicken enchiladas were loaded with moist chicken. The green tomatillo sauce was so good. DO NOT PASS THIS PLACE UP! Was in the mood for traditional Mexican food and found this place. I called and they DON'T use lard or chicken broth in their rice and beans, so we started the car! We were greeted and sat quickly when we arrived. The decor is authentic and there is lots of it, but it doesn't look tacky or dusty. The chips were warm and the salsas were delicious. They give a red and a green, immediately 5 stars for that in my book. They were both spicy too! I appreciate that they didn't hold back. I ordered the green cheese enchiladas and they were amazing! Came here the other night with my aunt, a cousin, and my husband. My aunt loves when I order since I generally get a variety, which allows her to try new dishes! Fun for me too, since I really do like to try a variety of different dishes! Pros- service and food, both on point. Servers were friendly and checked in on us regularly. Food was very tasty, we enjoyed all our dishes (regular guacamole, chicken mole enchiladas, garlic and butter shrimp, steak fajitas, and their special tamales- one pork, one elote corn). The shrimp dish was my favorite, each prawn was covered nicely in their butter garlic sauce. It felt like the dishes were family secrets, they all felt homey and delicious! There was also parking right in front of which was nice (to get into, kinda hard to get out of since San Antonio is a busy street!) The restaurant wasn't super busy, which surprised everyone in our group, especially since we all thought the food was very good. Cons- I suppose backing out of our parking spot, is the one con I can think of. Chile Relleno! I came here for takeout at about 2 pm, since the nearby La Salsa has closed and I Yelped a few places. Parking: as others mention, there are only 2 spaces in front on San Antonio Road, I didn't know they had a back lot. It's on the same block as Chef Chu. Luckily there wasn't much traffic so I was able to back in which made leaving easy. Ambiance: nice. It was a bit warm waiting for my takeout order, they had the front door open. They also have a nice outdoor covered patio eating area in front, see the photo. Service: when I entered there were no other customers, only a bartender who didn't acknowledge me. I was about to yell out but Mariana (the name on my receipt) appeared and took my order. Food: Chile Relleno plate w black beans, rice, a small bag of fresh tortilla chips, and two kinds of mildly spicy salsa. The Poblano pepper was stuffed w cheese and had a tasty egg batter, covered w a red salsa like sauce. It was quickly devoured! Price: $17 + $1.55 tax + tip. Chile Relleno by itself is $10 I think. Unfortunately, I wasn't particularly impressed by Estrellita. They *looked* like they would deliver on a lot of fronts, but at the end of the day, they didn't. They neither satisfied the "traditional" or "typical" cravings for Mexican food that one might get and decide to go out for a burrito or a comfort-food platter, nor did they live up to the promise of their menu. I can't lie, their menu looked great. My dad asked for "a Mexican place with a burrito," and out of the myriad of places that offered that, Estrellita's menu looked the best. It was elevated, it was full of things I had never tried before, and it sounded delicious. But pretty much everything that we ordered, despite the exotic names or product descriptions, fell pretty flat in terms of actual flavor. Portion size was decent, and luckily I didn't pay so I unfortunately don't remember the price point, but I can say without a doubt that the quality of the food we got and its flavor profile was decidedly mediocre. We were able to pull in but it was a challenge to leave - might be better to park in the back of the lot next door. SO first - their chips and salsa!! MY OH MY! crunchy homemade chips - I ended getting refill and loved their red salsa. I tried not to eat too much but it was hard. I loved the thickness with the right amount of salt and that salsa! SO GOOD and it comes out warm! So you want to eat it while warm! LOL Hubby got their Cochinito Pibli - which is a Mayan dish from yucatan. The pork is slowly braised in banana leaves, fresh fruit juices, herbs, and achiote. And served with the most delicious black beans and rice. I kept eating his beans off his plate! LOL... comes with hot tortillas. The only thing was I didn't realize you can choose, flour or corn. He probably would have preferred the corn but we got the flour. It was a VERY flavorful dish and delicious!! I got a special - their crab enchiladas. I was torn as I wanted to try another dish on their menu but thought since this was a special and crab season I'd go for the special. And I'm glad I did. They put so much crab into it and it had crunchy veggies within it so you had texture and everything wasn't just "soft". The only negative was I had to put the red salsa on top with my enchilada. Otherwise it lacked some flavor. A sauce would have been great. Overall it was a nice solid Mexican restaurant and we're glad we tried it. Estrellita plays it safe with a very Americanized take on Mexican food, nothing that'll blow you away. The enchiladas azteca were a highlight: decent meat and a tomatillo sauce that brought a nice tang. The cochinita pibil, on the other hand, was way too salty. Do not order the Chile Relleno, the inside was hardened cheese (I wonder if it was frozen and didn't get time to thaw). Free chips with salsa verde and roja are a nice touch. We came in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and asked if we could sit outside. The waitress told us to pick any table, but after we sat down she came back and told us we needed to move to a different one. It was a bit annoying and honestly made us feel a little singled out. The food itself was just okay. We ordered street tacos, fajitas, and a kids quesadilla. When the food arrived, the kids quesadilla was missing the rice and beans that were supposed to come with it. When we pointed it out, the waitress didn't seem aware of it and had to check the menu to confirm. We also asked several times for small plates, but they never came. Even though it's not in the actual downtown, Estrellita is what I would call a solid "Downtown Los Altos restaurant" meaning that if you live in the Los Altos area and have a craving for Mexican food, then this place is quite solid to get your fix. Bear in mind that I live in Mountain View where there are number of pretty good Mexican restaurants and my standards are a little high but Estrellita could definitely give those places a run for their money. Their dishes are quite tasty with dishes that I haven't seen at other places such as their pescado a la veracruzana, cochinita pibil, and pipian. I do wish that they rotated their specials a little more often as it seems like they have the same ones constantly but nevertheless they are tasty such as the enchilada with bacon and potato sauce. Parking is also a little bit of a hassle as it's a bit of a hit or miss if you get a spot right outside the restaurant but if you don't mind a small walk, there is plenty of parking on the streets of San Antonio. The atmosphere is quite nice and festive whether you are coming with your family or a large group for a celebration. Overall, this restaurant is a fail-safe place for some good Mexican food if you are in the Los Altos area. read more

I came on a Saturday night around 8 PM. there weren't many people here. I ordered the enchilada suizas. It tasted really great and came with rice and beans. The chicken was marinated well and it tasted perfect. I personally think it's a small portion size. For those who like to eat more, I recommend getting an extra enchilada because they're so good! When we first moved here, I went on a hunt for the best Mexican restaurant and tried almost all of the most popular ones in Los Altos, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View. Some of my favorites I gave multiple chances, and now after living here for 4 years this is the best. I have been here on multiple occasions and tried a variety of dishes. Their chicken oaxaca is so tender and flavorful. Their mole is some of the best I have ever tasted. They have delicious street tacos, burritos, mole enchiladas, and tamales. I have never ordered a dish I didn't like which I don't think I have ever been able to say about any restaurant ever. read more

Girls night out and then went shopping at the Mervyn's (I'm seriously dating myself here) that used to be where the Kohls is. I have fond memories of going there. I recently took my kids there before a concert at shoreline, and it still is an enjoyable experience. The food isn't fancy but it's definitely comforting! We've been coming here since the 80s, and I'm not sure if it's a change of ownership, or what, but I think this might've been our last time. Everything we ordered was very bland and flavorless, I ordered the Camarones à la Diablo extra spicy, and it was barely even medium. The red salsa that came with the chips was actually spicier. my dinner was supposed to come with rice and beans but instead I got two scoops of rice, that was undercooked. The chicken tortilla soup was also pretty flavorless. I was out wine tasting with some friends in the South Bay, and we were starved for a hearty meal and some AC. My friend recommended Estrellita, a place she had frequented back in her early start up years. The space was beautifully decorated with plenty of tables and a well stocked bar. We were seated immediately, and were offered free homemade chips and salsa, which we scarfed down right away. We ordered the following: 1. Guacamole: 5/5 2. Wow! During a recent visit I used DD to get food from this place and honestly didn't have high expectations but noticed that we're attentive to GF options so gave it a try. I ordered the mole chicken enchiladas and my partner had the fish tacos. We ordered a side of the chips and salsa. Mole: Dayum! They were so good. Just the right amount of sauce and no bitterness that can be present in some mole. The chicken was moist and the mole was flavorful. I will definitely visit this place in person to try other dishes.
