Jam Doung Style is a Jamaican restaurant located on the corner of Randolph Place and N Capitol Street. We wondered upon this small restaurant serving Jamaican cuisine while looking for dinner. We were greeted as we entered. Reggae music was playing. Bob Marley pictures hanging in the walls. It smelled good inside. We ordered takeout at the kiosk. It was simple to place the order. Hubby orders the Beef Stew with Macaroni and Cheese with a side of Cabbage. We also ordered the Beef pie and chocolate cake and a slice of carrot cake. The older lady was thrilled that we visited them all the way from Hawaii. She wanted to come back in my suitcase..lol! They were so friendly and welcoming. Just good people. We get back to our little place about a few blocks over. The food is piping hot. Perfectly seasoned! Just what we needed after a long day. Those slices of cake were rich and delicious. This place is well deserving of your love and support. These ladies are some of the hardest working women I have ever seen. I watched them work from a small cramped area with no seating to this beautiful dining experience. The food is great and the portions are well worth the price you pay. Compared to other restaurants in the DMV area where the food is not as good, in my opinion, charge considerably more for the same food and it's not as good as the food here. These ladies and their staff put a lot of love in their food and the service is great as well. The ladies on the register are always friendly and greet you with a smile. This is a unassuming small restaurant that you might just drive by, but don't miss out for amazing Jamaican food! They do accept credit card here over $10, so plan accordingly. Due to COVID-19 precautions, they are only allowing 2 people in at once. We called ahead at 6 PM on a Tuesday (had to call several times consecutively because they were probably busy with orders) and they only had ONE brown stew chicken special left (only $6.50 for a whole meal not including tax!!) and no more Jamaican Jerk chicken -- by the time we arrived, they were mostly out of all specials. If you want to make sure you get what you want, come EARLY! You get a LOT for one meal-- a flavorful mix of chicken, spices, rice along with a side of cooked cabbage. This is a Jamaican restaurant in the beautiful neighborhood of Bloomingdale in NW DC. It's a small and low key restaurant, they do not have dine in so I definitely recommend you to order in advance so that your food will ready usually in 10 minutes from when you placed your order. Firstly, they have daily special which is usually a brown stew chicken with rice and peas and comes with a choice of soda. Definitely ask for their daily specials. Secondly, they have a special pricing during lunch hour between 11am to 1pm. Also, check out their combination platter. My favorites are their curry goat, brown stew chicken, fried plantains and sweet potato cake. This platter would cost you around $19 to $20. Totally worth it as it usually spans across two meals for me. The portion size is amazing. Definitely recommend asking for their hot sauce if you can handle Jamaican spice. I've ordered from Jam Doung Style twice now, but know that I will keep coming back. The first time I ordered the brown stew chicken with cabbage, rice and pea and a side of plantains. The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender and flavorful, while the cabbage was perfectly shredded and reminded me of my own. The plantains were delicious and I figured it couldn't get better. However, I recently ordered through UberEats and they blew me away! Roughly just over an hour before the restaurant closed, I ordered a combo meal with jerk and curry, chicken, rice and peas, Mac & cheese and cabbage. I also ordered a similar meal for my son. We also ordered cocoa bread, a beef patty and plantains. I received a phone call from the restaurant within two minutes of ordering, to let me know that they were out of plantains. The sweet lady I spoke with asked if I would like an additional beef patty to which I said yes. To my surprise, an order of plantains were in my bag when the food arrived! I was so happy I called the restaurant back to thank them. Then we ate... Oh my!! The food reminded me of a home cooked meal I had when visiting Jamaica many years ago. Where do I start?? The plantains were perfectly ripe with caramelized edges and the tender jerk chicken was perfectly spiced. The curry chicken literally fell off the bone...Everything, and I do mean everything, was perfect, including the Mac & cheese! I actually came out of my way to try this place - Food reminded me of my trip to Jamaica a few years ago. I'd definitely eat here again if I were in the area and had a hankering for Jamaican food. Don't come expecting a 5 star restaurant. It's a tiny (blink and you'll miss it), restaurant that isn't easy on the eyes. The line of people standing outside should help you locate it. Due to Covid protocol, they can only have 2 people in at a time but they move the orders through quickly. I ordered the medium oxtail and the small curry chicken special. Entrees came with sides of rice and peas and cabbage- the cabbage was outstanding and seasoned perfectly, better than I've ever had. Oxtails are my favorite (don't care how high the price for them go up, I'll always order them) but these didn't knock my socks off- the gravy made up for it. What a great, friendly, and inviting restaurant. The food was absolutely fire. My girl and I ordered the oxtail with mac and cheese and cabbage. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas, and cabbage. We also ordered a beef patty, coco bread, a side of fried sweet plantains, a guava ginger fresh juice, and a pineapple ginger fresh juice. The portions are very generous- we brought half of the food home. The oxtail was succulent and nicely seasoned, with a sweet hint to it. The mac and cheese was just the perfect amount of cheesy and not greasy at all, with a golden oven-baked top. Unlike other Jamaican restaurants I've been to, Jam Doung Style slices their cabbage into a nice chiffonade, which is a nice touch and makes it easier to eat. Their jerk chicken was a little more chopped up than I'm used to, so you have to watch out for the little pieces of bones a bit more. But that didn't matter much because the chicken was perfectly seasoned with a lovely hint of scotch bonnet coating each bite. The rice and peas were fluffy and tender. They ended up being out of the beef patties, so they gave us a chicken one instead- it was flaky and had a subtle kick to it. The pineapple ginger juice was my favorite - a nice balance of fresh fruit and sweetness. Overall, this is the best Jamaican food I've had in DC. Really solid Caribbean option in DC! We came here before a concert at the Capitol One Arena and was pleasantly surprised at how busy this place was. They had a consistent stream of people coming in for take out, as there wasn't much seating inside the restaurant itself. The plates are reasonably priced and had great portions! I got the curry goat and my companions got the oxtail. We all agreed that while the flavors were there, the meat was a little small & bony and wasn't cooked enough so it was a little tough.
