My go-to meals are the fried chicken or the reggae jerk chicken with rice and beans and steamed vegetables. Everything is well seasoned, flavorful, and cooked just right. The fried chicken is especially tasty, and I love the sauce that comes with it. The steamed vegetables, which include cabbage and carrots, are always fresh and make the perfect side. One thing I really appreciate is the value. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, which can be hard to find these days. You definitely get your money's worth. I also have to mention the mac and cheese. As someone who loves mac and cheese, I'm pretty picky about it. Not every restaurant gets it right, but Dunn's River does. It's creamy, cheesy, flavorful, and comforting. I've only ordered through Uber Eats and have never dined in, so I can't speak on the atmosphere or in-person service. I will say that the food does take a little longer than some places, but the wait is absolutely worth it. Every order I've received has been fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Overall, Dunn's River Island Cafe has become one of my favorite Caribbean restaurants to order from. If you're looking for delicious food, generous portions, and great value, I highly recommend giving them a try.

At 3:07 PM, I called and spoke with a woman to place a pickup order: one fried fish and one oxtail with rice and peas and plantains. I was told plantains are not served until 5 PM, so I said that was fine and switched the side to steamed vegetables. She clarified it would be steamed cabbage, and I agreed. I then asked my father to pick up the food. He arrived at 3:39 PM, more than 30 minutes later, and the staff acted as though they had no idea what he was talking about. He called me asking if I had actually placed the order because they were telling him they didn't have it. I asked him to put me on speaker so I could speak with them. When I asked the woman why the order wasn't ready after being placed over 30 minutes earlier, she rudely replied, "Well you didn't talk to me. I don't answer phones." Excuse me? I don't know your internal process, but I do know I called and spoke with someone for about two minutes placing that order. I certainly didn't imagine it. I initially told my father to just leave, but since he was already there he asked them to make the order. I repeated the order to the woman and the call ended. I then called back and got the same woman again, as I recognized her voice. I explained the situation and she sighed deeply before saying, "Let me see because I'm here now." She put the phone down, I heard rummaging in the background, and then she came back and said, "He already placed the order." Ma'am, that was not what I asked. The question was why the order was never placed and ready for pickup when I called it in over 30 minutes earlier. Her response was simply, "Oh well I don't know, but the order is made now." At that point I told her I would be leaving a review. If I could leave zero stars for service, I would. The only reason this review is getting two star is because the food actually tastes good and they're a Caribbean restaurant. However, customer service matters. Being rude and dismissive when a customer politely asks about their order is completely unnecessary. A simple acknowledgment or accountability would have prevented this entire situation. My favorite Jamaican restaurant, Maam Jamaican Restaurant on Ives Dairy, closed and I was really sad about it. I also really miss the sweet oxtail flavor they used to have. I've been craving oxtails, and since they're closed and I wouldn't be cheating on them anymore, so I decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, the seasoning wasn't too good on either dish, but the food was very fresh. Unfortunately, I will not be returning nor recommending this restaurant, and I will also be sharing this experience on other platforms.

I was initially told by the woman at the counter to wait for cabbage after she went to the back to confirm only to find out later that there was none coming. Customer service was average at best. When I expressed my frustration, they brushed it off, saying the sides are "free," so it supposedly doesn't matter if they're unavailable. But here's the thing I would've ordered a larger plate had I known sides weren't an option. When I said that, the employee told me the large just comes with "one to two more pieces of meat and extra rice" for a higher price which honestly felt like a scam. To top it off, another customer chimed in saying this happens all the time they always run out of sides, even with their overpriced meals. Yet, they still charge you full price for a partial meal. That's unacceptable. Between the lack of transparency, poor customer service, sketchy building setup, and over $20 wasted, I can confidently say I won't be returning. Save your time and money.

The Haitian music was loud and energetic, giving the restaurant a lively, authentic vibe. My waitress was friendly at first, and I ordered the meatballs, black rice, mac n cheese, and plantains. The food was excellent -- full of Caribbean flavor and spice. They provided piklis, but the meal already had plenty of heat. I also ordered a lychee martini that was really good, although I requested extra lychees and never received them. Service became an issue as the meal went on. My waitress took a long time to return and never checked back in; I eventually had to flag someone down just to pay. I was also given a dirty fork with visible crusted food on it. I told my waitress and asked for plastic utensils instead. When the bill came, I noticed a charge for the plastic utensils. I explained again that the original fork was dirty, and she told me it didn't matter -- that's just their charge. I even tried to show her the fork, and she still insisted it didn't matter. I asked for a manager, who looked at the fork, confirmed it was dirty, and removed the charge. It feels unreasonable for a restaurant of this caliber to charge a customer for requesting clean utensils, especially when the ones provided were dirty in the first place. The food itself was delicious, and that's the one thing they absolutely excel at. I'd return and order takeout solely for the great food, but I wouldn't dine in again.
