I am ethnolinguistically deaf when it comes to the accent of the fine people of Trinidad. It might be the inflection or the use of unique words, but while I definitely hear English, it sounds scrambled, as though I were missing the decryption key. So when my RA announced that my first college roommate would be arriving from Chaguanas, I fully expected a Mexican guy. Instead, Vivek turned out to be Indo‑Trinidadian. For months, he asked me a ton of questions, and because I felt rude asking him to repeat himself, I'd respond with, "Yeah mon." (I still don't know why, he isn't Jamaican). If he gave me a pouty face, I'd say, "Naaaah." One Sunday, halfway through the semester, he woke up first and asked, "Yuh hungrry ahwah?" "Yeah mon," I replied. He shrieked, grabbed his keys, and bolted straight out of the house wearing a tie‑dye Ganesh T‑shirt, shower shoes, and white, 1970s‑era style basketball shorts. Somehow, it worked for him. As he ran down the stairs, he yelled back, "Yuh dotish ahwah, come boy?!" Thirty minutes later, the scent of onions, curry, and chilis filled the air. A group of older guys making a ruckus while watching cricket on an iPad greeted us like long‑lost relatives. One handed me a plastic cup filled with a brown liquid that smelled like Banana Now n' Laters and said, "Don study it. Drink up." My mouth, esophagus, and stomach immediately staged an intervention. With crossed arms and a stern dad voice, they declared: NO MORE OVERPROOF RUM! In response, Vivek sighed, "Miss Mataji (I miss my mom)." and handed me my first Double, a curried chickpea stuffed fry bread, as a chaser. Then came an Aloo Pie, basically an empanada stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes, followed by a friendly slap on the back as one of the cricket connoisseurs shoved a Carib Lager into my hand. Fifteen minutes in, I had already consumed two drinks, so whatever I ate next needed to be hearty. Though the Oxtail tempted me, I respected my vegetarian friend's dietary restrictions. I ordered a Buss‑Up‑Shot or a chopped, griddled roti that crisps as it cooks, paired with a Vegetarian Combo of channa (chickpeas), curried potatoes, roasted pumpkin, and a creamed spinach‑like side called bhagge. I washed it all down with the first pear soda of my life: Peardrax. Though the Pholourie, lentil‑dough hushpuppies served with chutneys weren't sweet, they somehow became dessert. I paired them nicely with an Apple‑J, or carbonated fruit juice that tasted like childhood. Vivek didn't miss his mom for long. Apparently, he had tried out for the Trini national soccer team, the Soca Warriors, during his secondary school years. In true Caribbean fashion, it took nearly 10 months to get a callback. Semester be damned, he left the following weekend. Though I'll never forget the impromptu going‑away party, in the end, I have never learned to decode the Trinidadian accent. Happen to look this place up online. Called in a pick order for a goat wrap roti and a chicken roti unwrapped. When we got there it was a short wait. We also order a side of pumpkin. They wrapped both of the roti by mistake and offered a complimentary drink in place. The service was friendly there were a couple guys sitting at the counter. The place is not the nicest and I would not sit to dine. When we got home and tried the roti it was very tasty, one of the best seasoned. I would like to try the roti skin without the meat inside to see how much split peas in inside and how well seasoned it would be. The pumpkin was too sweet like they added sugar and it had no garlic or cumin, so that I would not get again. It's called Naz Roti online. If you want great Trinidad food in the Miramar area, you have to come to Naz Roti Palace. My friend who is Trinidadian recommended me this place for a quick afternoon bite. When I walked in, I was greeted by such warm smiles which is always a plus for me. The ambiance of the restaurant is such a nice home feeling; The music playing with the decor and wonderful hospitality. The waitress was so nice as she helped me navigate through the menu. I ordered pholourie and alloo pies with a red solo drink. This is some of the best pholourie I have had in a while. The pholourie was made fresh and so soft! ; plus it paired very well with the sauce that comes with it. The alloo pies is a perfect blend of potato with a touch of spice and crispy crust. Naz Roti Palace is a local West Indies spot that has some of the best food. I ordered the Veggie Roti, with doubles and pholouri! Everything was fresh and very filling. The flavor of the veggie roti was amazing and it was enough food that I had to eat it in two different sittings. The service is amazing and the price is very good for how much food you get. It's a small shop but you can tell they are quality because they've been around for a long time and regulars find themselves there often. read more

Its a slice a of True Trini-Heaven!! My go to dishes here are the parata roti (affectionately known as Buss Up Shot) pumpkin and curry duck! The Dahl is jam packed with flavor and the channa is really nice as well. They have all the great imported Trinidadian delicacies, treats and drinks! They make everything from scratch and I always have more than enough for seconds at home and take a few pepper sauce packets with me My family and I have been coming here for so long, that now even as everyone has moved away, whenever we return home for a visit, we all usually gather at Naz at least once before we all return to our homes in other cities. I have visited here a few times and the people there are nice but recently I've gotten poor quality. This is the second time I've ordered dal from there and have gotten water boiled peas. It's almost as if they didn't have enough dal and watered it down to the thinnest possible consistency or they really just half cooked it. The first time I ordered it it was great so I'm not sure what happened. Either way I'm really disappointed to have spent $6 on watery peas. And it is also the second time I've ordered double polourie only to have half fresh and half double cooked. This place is straight outta a Roti Shop in the streets of St. James, Trinidad! Especially if you go on a Saturday afternoon...the people will be limin having a beer (or 7), soca music will be playin nice and loud, and the curry roti will be eaten! The buss up shot roti is my FAVE! So soft and warm, and makes the perfect utensil for picking up my chicken curry. The shrimp curry is also very good. What I can appreciate is that the meat is actually seasoned IN the curry. It's not just some bland meat dropped in a pot of curry sauce. This really makes the difference in great curry. You can also go here to by tickets for many of the Caribbean shows and fetes in the Miami area (cash only for tickets). Word to the non-Trinis: don't ask for a fork to eat your curry and roti! If your fingers aren't yellow after you've finished your food, you didn't eat it properly! More words to the non-Trinis: don't come in a rush or expect your food to be rushed. After I unwrapped the Chicken roti I realized it was microwaved as the bottom of the roti was soggy from water. The lady who took and gave me my order did not inform me the roti came with boned chicken, I assumed it was boneless as there was no option for bonesless on the menu. While eating the roti I had a small sharp bone fragment slither down my throat painfully. I had to drink about two large cups of water to force it down out of my throat. I was scared to hell of having to call 911 if it got stuck and I had problems breathing, luckily that did not happen. Other than that I was wrestling with bones and ligaments throughout the eating experience. The roti had a strong pleasant curry aroma. But it lacked flavor, was kind of bland and it was missing the spicy kick, but it was edible if hungry. I ate 90% of the roti, but the result was an all night experience of indigestion as I was bloated and in extreme discomfort all night, on a saturday night I might add. RATING 1.0 The pumpkin was dry tasteless and tough in texture, I threw it in the garbage after two half spoon fulls. RATING 0.0 I have been eating rotis for years in Canada and the US. I was looking For some roti . My friend had made me some years ago and I loved it. I looked for places near me in yelp, And this place appeared on the list. It is located at a shopping center. Has good parking . I ordered curry goat and curry chicken , they usually put it inside the roti , but They can pack it separately if you want and ask ahead of time. I ordered it to go to eat with my family at home. When they pack more than two orders, do not let them stack more than two containers on top of each other to make sure that they don't break and you waste all the precious juices of the meat and potatoes. (Fortunately only one container spilled a little ) When I got home, my family and I enjoyed the huge roti and the delicious meats. Let me tell you that I am not disappointed. My favorite was the doubles. Their home-made sauces/dips are amazing and spicy too. I actually like the fact that it is just a mom & pop place with no fancy decor. It is so charming. Finally, a good roti in South Florida! This unassuming restaurant in a shopping plaza is a family owned Trinidadian spot. They have all the basic Trini food including roti, doubles, curries, and even some snacks like chana and sweet red mango. What I really appreciated about Naz was that they have an assortment of veggies for the veggie roti. I ordered a roti with chana, spinach, and pumpkin. So far the other places I have been only offer chana and potato for vegetarians. That doesn't make a great roti to me. The food took a little while longer than I expected to come out of the kitchen, but once I started eating I realized it was worth the wait. The roti skin tasted fresh. It was soft, hot, and had a nice texture and flavor. The veggies inside were well seasoned and there was a good amount of all three inside. The spice was good too - a little on the hot side. So, if you don't like spicy, ask them to make it mild. I'm looking forward to returning for another roti and the try out the doubles. read more
