This place is amazing. I have black hair and I went in to dye my hair to a cool brown color. Usually, when I ask this at salons they can do it but the color fades pretty quickly after a few months. I went here and got my hair dyed to a dark cool brown and it lasted me so long, the color never faded at all. I went back and got highlights and it gave a subtle dimension to my hair. James Joseph Salon is super convenient and easy to get to by car or public transportation. Parking is easy and right there near the salon. The staff is friendly and welcoming, it's clean and bright, and there's just enough windows to provide good natural lighting. My sister and I both have curly, wavy hair and Solangel is great at knowing how to work with our hair type. Solangel is friendly and has a soft touch. She's been helping me get my hair healthy again and already it's growing. When your beloved stylist is not available but you need a "trim" before your friends fly in to visit and end up regretting it. A high quality and pricey salon should not feel like a gamble, like you can not trust an alternative stylist. I should not be guilty for needing a trim last minute. That is just how life is sometimes. When you then return to your beloved stylist and she *almost* accuses you of taking your dogs grooming clippers to your own head. Not only was it atrocious, I was left feeling uncomfortable to speak up as he smiled and seemed unaware? The heaviest damage was not seen until I returned home and saw the back of my head. I then had to pay twice because my friends were here visiting for two weeks and apparently that meant I missed the expiration date of their guarantee not to make you pay again to correct their mess or even offer a refund for the initial disaster when I returned. I have always gladly paid a heavier than usual price for the quality, and had been a client here for a long time. Even brought my son, and paid full price for a six year old, to ensure he had a mature well done cut. Note the previous pictures and then the disaster. The goddess my stylist is could do little to help though she tried. It has to grow out, all of the missing chunks. read more

UPDATE: Jordan fixed it and it's SO much better!!! If you are looking for a perfect haircut I highly recommend waiting for him. He's worth it! I finally decided to get my haircut and asked for Jordan upon calling and was told only Emily was available who was just as good. I said fine, but when I arrived was introduced to Danny who would be cutting my hair with no explanation. This was my first time at the salon. I showed multiple photos to explain EXACTLY what I wanted. He cut the length perfectly fine, but when I said I wanted "texture" it quickly turned into short layers that literally looked like a 6 year old took scissors to my head. I now have 1 layer of brown (because I have partial highlights) and one MUCH shorter than desired layer of blonde basically in a wave cut. It's the farthest thing from textured. I called after to ask for a refund and was told thould only "fix" it as if I would trust them to touch my hair again. I would NEVER go back here I now have to go to a friend that I can trust to fix the atrocity of a hair cut. read more

I've gone twice now to see Danny for a haircut, and have to say the experience is pretty incredible. The location has become very convenient for me, but more importantly the care and meticulousness Danny provides when he's cutting my hair, then of course styling it, is memorable. I have incredibly difficult hair to deal with and its always frustrating trying to figure out what to do with this mess. I was really sad because maintaining a cut is difficult and my usual stylist is quite the distance from me. Naturally, I needed a better solution for this problem and wanted to give a closer place a try. Really glad I did. Mariela did a phenomenal job on my haircut. I have thin curly hair and she educated me on how often I should do hair treatments and how frequently I should wash. She spent so much time making sure my curls were dry and styled before I left the salon. This experience far exceeded my expectations. Usually, I'll call and whoever is on the phone will claim that the stylist knows how to work with curly hair but Mariela actually did know. She's super experienced with all the different curl patterns in my hair and made sure I was satisfied with my final look. Moving from CT to MA and not being able to find a good stylist was rough but I finally found my go-to hair salon. read more

$80 for a root touch up, and this is the first time I've ever been tossed a brush after my hair was washed out. Fine if you don't include a blowout with the service, but truly in this day and age, this is how you treat clients? The stylist didn't even think to come and check the color - not once - to make sure it was right. To boot I've got a neck injury from the sink. The assistant really needs to be in another industry. She's rude, brash, and has nothing informative or even kind to say. The higher ups at James Joseph clearly don't want feedback, because their automated email asking for feedback leads to a dead end. I would have preferred to send this privately but clearly it's a problem they don't want to address. Take your business elsewhere. read more

If I could give a zero star review, I would. This review is in behalf of my Aunt who went to go get a bob haircut here. I went to go visit her this past weekend and was MORTIFIED to see what this salon did to her hair. I've never seen a more butchered hair cut in my life. After my Aunt was dissatisfied with her cut, another woman at the salon tried to "fix it". The worst part of this all is that they only gave her a 10 percent discount and thought that was more than enough. I don't think she should have paid AT ALL. Matter of fact, she should have left there with a free service of her choice for next time to truly make up for it. Owww... Maybe I caught my stylist on a bad day, because that was a 'Mom's mad at Dad' level of combing/brushing I got during my cut. She caught the comb on a healing ear piercing and even poked me HARD in the eye with her finger -and continued to try and cut while I'm holding my eye in pain. Did I really pay extra for this? End of the cut, she hands me a mirror, says "Looks nice..." in the same blah rude tone she used with all the assisting staff, and ghosts. OK honey, go get lunch because at this point the hangry is palpable. The cut was decent enough but I'd love to know how it would have turned out if the stylist wasn't in such a rush/scraping the life out of my scalp. The rest of the staff were pleasant, though. For now I'll stick with my usual stylist at the W Boston location. read more

I made an appointment for a haircut and toner on a Saturday afternoon. The haircut turned out nice but the hair washer didn't wash all of the toner out and my whole ear was covered in residue that the hair washer missed! Overall, I thought it was pretty pricy for the haircut I got and sub-par service. read more

Who wants to know the best secret around????? Well, are you sick of NOT BEING SATISFIED? Me too! Welcome to my life bitches. Enter: JJS. (I shorten everything to be cool) This new location is in Station Landing in Medford right across from Boston Sports Club.....there is plenty of parking and it is right next to Wellington Station-Orange line. The concept is great-the stylists here are trained and work on Newbury street, yet come to Medford a few days a week so the prices are a bit lower with out sacrificing any skills! I have had the WORST experiences at salons. I always walk out with horrible color (either turns green or brassy blond) OR the Judy Jetson football helmet cut. First-the place inside is so nice...it has a futuristic warehouse feel -it is all open, perfectly clean and has nice relaxing colors and metals......Very cool! Next, It was only $48! My stylist was Mayumi - I now officially think she is capable of supernatural abilities with the scissors. She is even leveled- She doesn't talk too much and she isn't cold. She just goes on your cue...... As soon as we went in we were offered wine, coffee-even chai latte's!!! I felt like I was at a top place in Beverly Hills or something and I was a star. Though everything in the place drips of being top notch, there is no pretentious attitudes -anywhere. I had an awesome wash (they used Bumble and Bumble) and the guy who did it (L'Carl) gave a great head massage. He was extremely funny as well. So, Mayumi promised only to cut long layers in my hair and cut a half inch off (liked I asked). I know I need more cut off but I am in a wedding in April, so I had to just do the minimal. She actually manged to give my hair great shape and fix my self induced "bang job" by blending it in to the side of my hair. She than washed my hair with a shampoo that will take away the brassiness ....the best part is, I wanted to buy it and she suggested to WAIT until I got my hair colored and only use as maintenance. No upsell! Wow! When I got home my "SO" said I looked like a model. I hugged him for spewing another line of bullshit with a straight face. I actually am going back there next week for a foil with two colors and a toner (all demi permanent)- I first just wanted to just get a cut and see if I liked the place and vibed with the stylist. I am so siked the cut was a success, because I literally have brassy hair with dark mousy routes and need color correction STAT. Mayumi understood my color concerns (not that she couldn't see with her own eyes) and assured me she could fix it. Sounds cute huh??? Hey at least my hair cut is awesome! I always had a 'grass is always greener' mentality, thinking someone just around the proverbial stylist corner would give me a sexier side bang, better highlights, choppier layers. I've always walked out feeling amazing. My go to is Jordan and he does an amazing job. He also talks you through each process so you're both clear on exactly what's going on and there are no tear inducing "that's not what I wanted!" moments. This is Medford so, as you'd expect - you're getting a much better deal than nearby options in Cambridge, Somerville and Boston. Another bonus of being in the burbs? Convenient free parking. So disappointed with the service at this salon. I went for the first time a couple months ago and my color was done wrong. I had to return the following day for it to be corrected ..... I decided to give it one more shot and went back two months later for a root touch up and gloss ($100 treatment). As my hair was being colored the stylist informed me blow drys are not included in a color treatment and he "didn't have time to stick around to dry it because he needed to leave at 6". I was left under the processor for too long and finally an assistant came out to wash my hair. When she finished she pointed me in the direction of some brushes and told me to hep myself. The stylist never even came back to even check the color or to brush my hair out! If I could have gotten money back for the color I would have ... so disgusted with the service and I would NEVER recommend someone to go here. read more

I had the unfortunate privilege of visiting James Joseph Salon but I won't talk about the salon as the place was nice but more of the stylist I encountered. First off, Sharon is a really nice person but I wouldn't call her a stylist. I went to a junior stylist at Jean Pierre six years ago and he was fantastic not to mention he was straight out of stylist school. When I walked in I had full on highlights and wanted a single process color to remove them and go darker along with bangs. Well, she made my hair JET black which wasn't what I was looking for, and she was almost done with my hair when I had to remind her to do my bangs. She basically rushed through them and now I am waiting for them to grow out as they are that bad! When I got home I realized she left a junk at the side and the other which I had to cut myself as it would've made the bangs worse!!! She then proceed to curl my hair with a flat iron which came out to be quite ugly. I basically went home washed my hair and restyled it. Moral of story, I will no longer cheapen my hair by going to a second rate stylist. I will never cheat on my go to stylist Kerri Lally of JOrgo Salon to save a couple $$ as it's NOT worth it... *I would post a picture but would rather not as not digging the looik. :( read more

I've been to this salon a few times this year after relocating to the Boston area. I've never had a reaction to hair dye or hair stripping before (not my first rodeo). However after a $140 cut & color plus $30 tip (before I knew what was coming my way), I discovered that I've been treated to a pretty unexpected and uncomfortable chemical burn on my left ear. I called the salon this morning to convey my issue. She stated the manager was off today but she would pass along my complaint and I would hear from her. Also that it was the same mix they've used before and not sure why there would be a problem. The assistant who rinsed and washed out my color spent an unusual amount of time cleaning my ears, particularly the left one. I remember because this was pretty unusual. No, my ears are not normally red or crusted with puss-like scabs. I'm very upset and disappointed. read more

Great, great place. I see Jordan for my haircuts. He is considered an advanced stylist- but the haircut is only 45.!! He spends a great deal of time with me each time and I always come out feeling like a million dollar baby. Aside from the stylist- this place delivers great service From the point of entry to the point of leaving. You're Offered coffee/tea/water at the start- have a huge selection of magazines to choose from, and everyone is really friendly. Finally- I love that everyone there seems to get along really well. Alright, maybe this is too soon. Sort of like Ted falling for Robin on How I Met Your Mother's first episode. Haven't seen it? Well this main guy Ted basically walks into his local bar to meet up with some friends to whine about how he's never met the right girl when Robin Schobotsky (sp?) walks in. He asks for her number, they go on a date, and he makes a rookie mistake. He tells her, on that very same date, that he loves her. Well... my story isn't in the same context exactly. I've got the guy and we're getting married in less than 2 weeks (yay!). But, I've never felt as comfortable throwing over some hard earned sheckles for a cut and partial highlight as I did today. I pretty much cannot stop looking at my hair in any mirror I pass. My mystery lady? Diana. She's there Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday when the salon is kind of slow, but this chick's got chops. My hair is pretty thick, which I should have let them know about when I called to make the appointment last Friday. Though it may be because I warned her about my hair the moment I sat down, Diana was still able to cut, color, and blow out my hair beautifully and just in time for her next appointment. Sure, it may be a bit soon, but I've seriously never felt better about a haircut and color before. And, I've already got my boy's appointment scheduled for Thursday. Note: There's 2 hour parking in front of and behind the shop, but there is the possibility of getting towed here. My appointment took about 3 hours (I seriously have a lot of hair) and the girl at the desk was nice enough to check on my car for me and put a parking pass on the dash so that I wouldn't get towed. My point? Ask them how long your appointment is likely to take before you sit down in the stylist's chair so that you can protect yourself from the possibility of a $500 towing bill. Yeah, you read that right, friend. $500 towing bill. Yelpers don't let fellow yelpers get towed. Word to yo motha. read more

Secondly: I got my hair cut less than a week ago and I've gotten so many compliments that I had to update my review. Seriously people: Strangers in the line at Starbucks have told me how good my hair is. STRANGERS. I'm pretty sure it's the combo of this effortless cut that Mayumi gave me + the Sojourn moisturizing shampoo/conditioner I've been using that makes me look extra fab. (FYI: All retail items at JJ are 20% off for the month of November. I got my shampoo/conditioner 2 pack for a STEAL.) So yes. My love affair with James Joseph continues. May it never end.
