Jamo's Cafe Deli & Grill is definitely a no-frills type place that a less generous description might even dare to call it a dump. The place has definitely seen better days, but it is more of a fast-food gyro and sandwich place and for that they do an admirable job. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly enough and took my order of a gyro a fries and got me my food in a relatively quick amount of time. The price was under eleven dollars with the tax included. The gyro was okay. Not great, but good. I wish they cut the onions a bit thinner, but again, not bad. The fries were frozen from a bag, but cooked well. My table had no napkins in the dispenser. Also, when I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, I got the last paper towel in there. They should probably get in the habit of checking these at least once a day. Jamo's Cafe Deli & Grill must be doing something right as they have been here a long time. Despite the shortcomings here, I still enjoyed my lunch. Taking into consideration that it is a fast-food type place, I will give it four stars overall. read more

I tried the chicken shawarma which was really good but the lamb kabob was a little tough and under seasoned. It seemed like there was only one person working there but he did his best to attend to all the customers there. The inside of the restaurant could definitely use an update. read more

Don't even know where to start, this place was terrible. The gyro had one (1) thin sliver of gyro meat, packed with lettuce. Almost no flavor to the meat. The salad.... Who in their right mind sells a Greek salad with olives that have not been pitted. Bit into an olive to find a pit. A whole onion and bell pepper slice that I had to cut up myself. The place currently doesn't have air conditioning. Door was propped open, it was 89 degrees outside. The place itself is dirty, outdated, and a more or less just stuff everywhere. The service was good. The owner was nice. Didn't seem very interested in talking at all. But he did recommend the gyro. read more

I guess despite all the years we've lived in Huntsville, we haven't visited Jamo's before! Great omission! They have really good Greek food! We ordered baba ganoush- excellent- creamy, very well seasoned, served with fresh tasty pita bread; gyro plate came with generous portion of roasted beef and lamb served over delicious rice and side of fruit and mixed salad was very fresh and delicious; roasted veggie plates and falafel plate also were expertly cooked, very tasty and well seasoned- not too salty, not too spicy- perfect balance. Taziki sauce and hummus that were parts of gyro and vegetable plates were also very delicious. Ours was a take out order- was perfectly correct, service was very very courteous and on time. In the late 80s and early 90s I frequented Jamo's due to it's proximity to school (UAH) and work in the area. I would typically pre order by phone and pick up at the drive through window around back, sometimes eating inside or on the front patio area. I'm not a vegetarian, however, I really liked their veggie platter and veggie wrap, while occasionally getting the chicken skewer. The dishes always tasted fresh and healthy, especially compared to the nearby options which consisted primarily of fast food (Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Arby's were all within ~ 2-3 miles.) Back then, it took ~ 20 minutes and my order was usually ready within 5 minutes of arriving at the drive through window. I'm pretty sure all orders are made fresh to order, hence the 20 minute-ish ticket times. I always enjoyed Jamo's and it could get really crowded in the day with everyone from engineers working in Research Park, to UAH/Calhoun College kids, professors, teenagers, and families. I'm not sure who the owner is but it's always appeared to be family run. They must be doing something right for staying in business so long and come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing them written up by the "kitchen cops" who report those with low health ratings/kitchen issues - so that's a bonus! First the food was pretty good. I tried the chicken shawarma. It was seasoned nicely, and dressed with pickles and onions. I also tried falafel. They were very good.Clearly not out of a box. They were served with a small but adequate portion of hummus. Also made on site. Jamo's Cafe, appears to have been here in the same spot since the 1980's, and the ambiance shows that. It's a small place but the seating is comfortable. The service was questionable, but it is what it is, to the extent that it was 5pm-ish. The proprietor's daughter was apparently "holding the fort down" and she clearly appeared to be somewhat out of her element. As she was totaling up my order I had to ask about a drink to go with my food. She wasn't unpleasant but she was not exactly customer friendly. This might be a fluke as they say. Before I say "don't bother", with Jamo's Cafe, I'll give it another try, say around lunchtime perhaps. I met my boyfriend at Jamo's for lunch on Saturday after a morning class at UAH. There are a lot of solid places to eat on Jordan Lane, but if you're looking for a quick, relatively inexpensive place for a fresh bite to eat, Jamo's is not a bad bet! Since it's a cafe, they have several coffee and smoothie and juice options. Regrettably, I didn't try any of those, but they looked and smelled good! Instead, I had the chicken kabob plate, and my boyfriend had the gyro plate. Jamo's was sadly empty when we arrived around 12:15. A man and someone who looked like his daughter jumped up to help us. She took our orders while he immediately went to the kitchen to start cooking our food for us. No doubt, the meals are fresh! My chicken was still sizzling hot when it was served to me. The kabob has chicken, bell pepper, and onion. It's served on a bed of rice with hummus, a small salad, pita wedges, and a piece of pineapple and I think an orange slice -- I wasn't hungry enough to eat it all so I might be wrong about that. At any rate, the season was well seasoned, tender, and cooked perfectly. The rice was rather bland. I thought the hummus was really smooth and tasty. For me, the pita was a little on the too chewy and tough side, but it still tasted pretty good with the hummus. My boyfriend enjoyed his gyro meat, saying the strips had enjoyable crispy edges with tender centers. He got tzatziki sauce instead of hummus, which went well with the gyro strips and pita, sort of a build your own gyro if you were so inclined. His plate was identical to mine except he got gyro meat strips instead of chicken on a kabob, and tzatziki instead of hummus. While I'm not totally sure I'd absolutely go out of my way to revisit Jamo's, I'd still happily return if I wanted something Mediterranean-ish while in the area. Knowing what to rate this place was pretty difficult. The quality of the food was good, but it wasn't somewhere you'd make an effort to go back. The price is very inexpensive making the cafe a great place to stop for a casual lunch. However, 2 major issues here. Their olives have pits in them, which is just a recipe for disaster. I discovered the first pitted olive as a garnish, which was fine. But my salad had pitted olives as well which is like a death trap for the teeth. Secondly, the layout of the parking lot is actually terrible, I wish there was more parking behind the restaurant. I tried their Greek salad, nothing special but not bad, and their hummus. First time eating here and I was very impressed. The establishment really never appealed to me from the outside but boy I have been missing out! First thing first, the Chai Tea here is amaaaaaazing! Smooth, creamy and tasty! We took some to go for the Christmas Parade and added some spiced rum to it. Try this and thank me later. WHOOOOMAGAWD Secondly, the lamb kabobs were delicious! They were cooked perfectly, tender and juicy. The plate was served with rice, salad, fruit, hummus and pita bread. Now, I wasn't a big fan of the pita bread. I prefer my pita bread soft and fluffy (like my mama's biscuits lol) and this pita bread was the opposite but it was tolerable. Decent little Mediterranean place I guess but a little disappointed in ordering a falafel platter: the tiny amount of humus, the lack of tziki sauce, and the lack of salad dressing even though 1/3 of the box was salad. To make up for these shortcomings there was a ton of untoasted pita bread wedges. Overall left me with the impression of dry and bland. Not what I'm going for when visiting a place like this. Great local Mediterranean cafe. I had the mixed kabob plate. The kabobs were well seasoned, the rice could use a touch more love (it was pretty plane), and the hummus was good, not the greatest, a bit oily, but smooth rather than grainy and that's really what matters. And then there's the Pita. REAL pita, not those puffy wonderbread pancakes all the stores around here call pita. I'm going to go back just for the pita! read more

I was looking for some local flavor for lunch today, a place the locals frequent with decent food. Success! Jamo's is a very unassuming roadside joint. I drove by the place yesterday and I just got a sense this place was special. So here I am today for lunch. So when you first walk in you get a sense this place is simple, no fancy menus, nothing overly fancy in terms of decor, just good food. You order your food at the counter and they bring it out to your table. I liked that they had large seating areas both inside and out. I ordered the gyro sandwich for lunch. I really liked that the sandwich was not huge! I've been to gyro joints where the stuff the pita with so much meat you can't even handle it as a sandwich, no less feel guilty about consuming so much food. No, Jamo's does the gyro right in my book. Now, for the interesting twist. They put pickles on their gyro sandwiches! This was a first for me but I loved it, what a great taste! There is limited parking here; a few spaces out front or you can park on the grass behind the building. The staff was friendly and let me customize my plate since I don't care for salad. It was very affordable and the food was hot and fresh - but tasted just okay. The rice was moist and not mushy - good texture - but needed something to brighten the flavor. Jamo's was a nice place to go for a casual dinner. It's very quiet, cheap, and laid-back. You can sit inside or outside. Although it's next to a big road, the outside patio is nice, if a little bit spider-infested. The people who work here are great! Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable, and they all at least pretended to laugh at my jokes. Portions were great for the price. I got the falafel plate and hummus, and I thought everything was delicious and unique. I LOVED the salad; the dressing was homemade and truly Middle Eastern and hit the spot. To the person who wrote "don't get the salad", I disagree. I'd go back just for it! :) The gyro meat was delicious, and served on a bed of delicious wild rice pilaf. Definately was a combination of beef and something else... lamb? Goat? What a great find in Huntsville. I must have driven past this restaurant a hundred times and never thought to stop in. BIG mistake, it is very, very good. We went for lunch and had wraps: gyro and chicken. They call it a wrap but think traditional pita used as a tortilla. We also had an appetizer of hummus. This was outstanding. Creamy, tasty, everything you'd want. The pita was firm and fresh. As we left, I remembered someone said the chai tea was good, so we got one to go. Made with steamed milk, it had a touch of citrus. We'll definitely be back, maybe for dinner this time. But until then, I'll be back just to grab a tea (and maybe some hummus to take home). read more

An easy walk from the UAH campus, Jamo's is a great place for a study break and snack. Their hummus was my comfort food when I lived in Huntsville! Jamos is both the place where I first tried falafel and the place where I fell in love with it. Though small and earnest in appearance the folks at Jamos Cafe offer up great value for delicious Mediterranean cuisine. If you've never tried falafel before, this is the place were I'd recommend giving it a chance, but even if you're not feeling adventurous enough to try the "fried green things" (c'mon, green eggs and ham people, what would Dr. Seuss say?) there are still plenty of other quality menu items like their gyros and kabobs. You can get the wraps if you want, but my personal suggestion? Get the plates. They're worth it for the extra cost, and your taste buds get to take the full Tour de Jamos. Long story short? Jamos is a neat little local dive. If you enjoy greek or Mediterranean food at all I would definitely suggest taking the plunge. read more

We had lunch here today. It was yummy. My boyfriend and I disagree a bit on the stars... he wanted to give 5 .. me 4, he won! He had the lamb kabobs which had a great flavor and were very tender. This was served with rice, a salad, hummus and pita. I had a Greek salad. It was large and yummy. The only issue, it was iceberg lettuce. I would have liked some mixed greens. Others than that, it was great. Loaded with feta, peppers, onions and olives (which had pits). We completed our meal with baklava and coffee. It was some of the best I've had. Perfectly good falafel's (nowhere near Mamoun's in NYC or New Haven, CT, that take the falafal to an art form, but OK). Nice tasty little salad with feta cheese and black olives, all for $7 or so. My only problem is the pita bread. Why offer that cold stale pish on the side? heat is up on the grill for a few seconds, before you cut it, go on, make the effort. Also, how about having some arab/middle eastern tea on the go. So much better than that overpriced Tazo stuff. read more

I went to this place because it had such good reviews and is around the corner from UAH. Those people that have given this place 4/5 stars either have no taste pallets or have never eaten original Mediterranean. I had the grilled chicken special that was supposed to come with rice, well they were out of that so instead I got given fries. The grilled chicken was dry and over cooked, the fruit bowl was one pineapple slice and a tiny orange slice (barely a fruit cup). The hummus was oily and liquidy. I have been to the Mediterranean many times and it wasn't close. The fries were the best part of the meal but saying that still very average. To be fair I think it was one guy working and he cooked everything from scratch. It took maybe 15 minutes for our food to come out. For $8 I expected a lot more quality. There was a lot of food in my polystyrene container but the quality wasn't there. I would not go back. read more
