This was on my list to try while visiting Chattanooga. I love trying vegetarian places that aren't all about fake meat. I just got a burrito to go and lucked out with parking in front. It was pretty quiet (early on a Friday evening). I only saw one employee while I was there and she was very nice. She brought me a glass of water while I waited. The burrito was DELICIOUS. I added tofu to it, which probably wasn't necessary, but I love tofu. I guess I was a little disappointed they didn't really do anything to it. I should not have eaten the whole thing, but I couldn't stop. The chips and salsa were also really good. The chips were very crispy and the salsa was fresh. The prices are really reasonable too! I would go back if I visited again (and I don't think I'd say that about anywhere else I ate). read more

The restroom is gender inclusive and wheelchair accessible. Service: Over the past 10 years and many visits, including celebrating multiple birthdays here, service has sometimes felt a bit inattentive or stretched thin. That said, on my most recent solo Sunday brunch visit, the bartender/server was genuinely warm, friendly, and attentive, which made a noticeable difference in the overall experience. It was refreshing and their kind and caring energy was so appreciated. Prices: Prices are very reasonable for the generous portion sizes. Menu & Food: The menu covers a wide range of offerings, which is ambitious and gives plenty of options. I've returned several times to try something new, hoping to discover a standout dish. I haven't quite found anything to write home about yet as most dishes land in the "just okay" category for me. They're filling, but not especially bold, flavorful, or memorable. As someone who really enjoys vibrant spices and layered flavor, I keep hoping the next dish I try will shine, but everything I've had thus far tends to be a bit on the uninspired side. The pancakes have been the most reliable item over the years. They aren't over-the-top, but they're consistently good and comforting. The kids' stack is especially generous and more than enough for most adults. The only French toast option is peanut French toast; a classic version would be a nice addition for those with peanut allergies or folks just looking for regular French toast. On my latest visit, I ordered the migas, which come as four mini tacos with a small side salad. It was decent, though nothing particularly memorable. I ordered a side of hashed potatoes, which were a bit dry. I also ordered a side of the cheese grits, which were unfortunately the low point for me. They were thin and more brothy than creamy. It was a bit like eating nutritional yeast slop. As a Southerner who absolutely loves grits, I'm honestly hoping there may have been a mix-up that day. I'd hate for anyone unfamiliar with Southern cooking, or vegan grits, to think that's the standard, because they can be incredibly rich and satisfying when done well (Sevananda in ATL, for example, has amazing vegan cheese grits), but these were very disappointing. With a little more creativity in the kitchen and perhaps some bolder seasoning or new sauces, the menu could really shine. I truly hope Sluggo's continues to thrive and considers adding more explicitly organic menu options. Just a bit more flavor and flair could really make it a standout. read more

We drove out of our way to go to Sluggo's and it was so worth it! We got the special appetizer of the day, potstickers, the club, and the rusty and dust. The seitan was incredibly good, tender and delicious! The food took a bit to be made, but it was so worth it. The portions were generous and all 4 of us cleared our plates, happily. The environment and the people were quirky and very punk rock. When we got there, the only seating for 4 was outside or at the bar, so we sat at the bar. When a 4 top opened up, it was offered to us. Ashley (I hope that's spelled right) will take good care of you if you're in the mood for some Southern style, home cooked vegan food. He's about as Tennessee friendly as you're going to find and knows his menu really well. We were greeted as we walked into this comfortable, casual restaurant not really knowing what to expect. In fact, I had forgotten that it was all vegan but he reminded us just to be sure we would be happy with our choice. He gave us the list of specials along with some recommendations after we asked. I had the Reuben and the wife and I split two appetizers dash the dumplings and the wings. The sauce on the wings was delightful and the dumplings (a special) were spot on. The dumplings were served with what we believe was a spicy vegan mayo and some sort of sweet chili sauce. They were also terrific. Unfortunately, especially in vegan restaurants, Reubens are usually filled with sauerkraut to drown out all flavors and to fill you up. All he had a really good amount that added enough flavor and crunch without trying out the other flavors. We were also informed that they make their own seitan and it's available as a package to go if you give them some notice. The prices were quite Fair and the food was served hot and quickly. We got a little bit of history when things slowed down from this super friendly restaurant owner. We're thinking about relocating to this area and this was a really nice last stop on our trip - we for sure will be back. read more

This place is amazing. The people who run this place are fun, interesting, and morally conscious human beings who have successfully made Sluggo's a place to eat, meet with friends, and make new ones. Sluggo's is a name renowned all throughout Tennessee and has inspired multiple vegan restaurants throughout the south. Prepare yourself for a warm, inviting atmosphere, (complete with back patio) delicious vegan comfort food, and a totally awesome live music venue downstairs. The owners and employees are in a local punk band called "The Listening Skulls" which rocks equally as hard as the food does here. Order the club sandwich! You won't be disappointed. read more

Ughh! It pains me and I hate to do it because I so wanted this to be a delicious and I want to support local restaurants but Sluggo's food was a miss for me and my friend. Service was totally friendly and the ambiance was welcoming, intimate and great. The food however was so gloopy. We ordered the zucchini griddle cakes, the rueben and the special which was the jalapeño chili burger. The zucchini griddle cakes were yummy, salty, dilly and had something good going for them. They could have been crisped up a bit more but overall good. The jalapeño chili burger was mushy, fell apart and there was no ability to distinguish different elements of the burger. Just a brown pile which had some good elements but it all blended it together in an unappealing way. The rueben was not yummy. The seitan was so spongy and blended in with the bread which then again became a falling apart pile We didn't finish either. It felt like very 90s vegetarian food to me.. meaning for me it lacked some determination and innovation in trying to make it as good as its non veg equivalents or its own thing all together which both are happening and totally possible- i think some freshness and aliveness to the food would be super helpful. read more

This place is AMAZING! Even if you aren't vegan, you'll love this place. (I'm not vegan.) The food is excellent and the portion sizes are large. You'll either have to share or grab a doggie bag! I had the Nacho and Lefty which was an appetizer but I could only finish half of it. So delicious! Everything about this restaurant was quirky and brilliant! Our server Rachel was fun, friendly and highly entertaining! The food did not disappoint, either. This was our first time dining at Sluggo's and we loved everything about it. We happened to be there on Trivia-Wednesday so we joined the fun in the bar downstairs after dinner. The vibe in the bar was relaxed and fun. The bartender was extremely efficient and friendly; sadly didn't get his name. But he was great! I highly recommend this restaurant and bar to anyone looking for delicious food in a low-key, fun and eclectic environment. We will definitely revisit asap. read more

I couldn't believe it was 100% vegan. I loved every bite and the meal was super filling and super affordable. I'm really glad I gave this place a chance in my last days of visiting Chattanooga. Damn if this place isn't delicious! We went for brunch and dinner while on vacation in Chattanooga. It was hard to choose what to order because everything looked so good, but I'd recommend everything we ordered when we went for dinner: -Pesto Bruschetta -Seitan Wings with buffalo sauce -The Panhandle -Pecan Dusted Seitan First the bruschetta - I am pretty picky about pesto and strongly prefer my family's, but this one was probably the only pesto I've had at a restaurant that I think competes. I have been dreaming about it for weeks since we visited, no lie. It was bright and creamy at the same time. Whatever they used for parmesan (I believe everything here is made from scratch) was the softest, best vegan parmesan I've ever had. Seitan wings - nice and juicy, wonderful texture, and slathered in sauce. I liked the shape of them too, not trying to mimic actual wings but just being their own delicious selves! Panhandle Tofu - this one blew my partner away. I don't know what magic Sluggo's does with their tofu preparation, but I'm grateful for it. The tofu is melt in your mouth without falling apart, the dill sauce was outrageous and the capers provided a nice pop. Served on top of perfectly done cheesy grits with coleslaw and a cornbread muffin, it's well balanced and a nice representation of southern food. Pecan Dusted Seitan - WOW. I've never had anything like this before. They covered the seitan cutlets in a mushroom gravy (I don't particularly like mushrooms but this was bomb) and served on top of garlic mashed potatoes. As if that wasn't delicious enough, it came with collards!! One of the things we really loved about Sluggo's was that they are so good at what they do that while some of their dishes are trying to veganize classic meat or cheese dishes, they're so good in their own right that they don't need to be compared. It's just really good food!! The staff is friendly, and it's clear that the chefs are *passionate* about cooking, not just showing up for a job. You can taste the love and creativity that is poured into their dishes. The brunch was nothing of note, which was disappointing because it's hard to find a vegan brunch spot. We got the Migas and the Cast Iron Skillet and they were good but nothing I'd go back for, and the portions were quite small compared to their other dishes. However, we got the side caesar with brunch and the tofu on top was once again AMAZING and completely different from the dinner preparation(s). I'd go back for lunch and dinner and skip the brunch next time. Covid tip: plenty of outdoor seating options and masked servers, so we felt very safe. read more

Sorry- don't like writing a bad review but it was not a good experience. It took over 2 hours to get food- two plates were served, then we waited 40 more minutes for the other meals- the waitress kind of mumbled something about a mix up in the kitchen but no apology or attempt to fix it. She brought out two cups of water for our table of 4 adults and 4 young kids- and would randomly bring out some empty sharing plates and silverware. Everything was off- and no one seemed to notice or care. The kids hung in there, but the first two meals were cold and congealed by the time the others arrived so much later. Bad day all around. Sorry for the negative review- this was just such a rough experience for our family and no one seemed to care at the restaurant, so I guess this review will offer feedback so hopefully they can fix it or someone can avoid having the experience we did. read more

First time visiting I ordered the sweet Thai chili plate and a kombucha to drink. So the bowl came with fried tofu, cabbage, spinach, brown rice and the chili sauce. Everything was good , but it was waaaay too much sauce. My rice was swimming in it to the point where u couldn't eat anymore. I think it would be better with 2-3 tablespoons of sauce and that's it. I didn't finish my plate because the sauce was so overwhelming. Don't get me wrong the sauce was good just too much. Other than that the staff was very nice, I like the atmosphere. I gave 3 stars because it was SO much sauce. I will probably go back and try a different item on the menu though. read more

I was unsure how to calibrate expectations for Chattanooga's vegetarian restaurant of choice, but it seems to be doing alright for itself. On the hippie-hipster axis, it is decidedly the former, with the decor and the clientele evincing a countercultural attitude. The menu ranges from Asian to Mexican to local. What I went with was a safe-in my eyes-bowl of tofu and rice with sweet chili sauce, which turned out to be just that: sweet and chili and lacking any other nuance of flavor. Nonetheless, it fit the bill for a hungry traveler, and I was happy for a split pea soup on the side. Were I more adventurous, I might have tried the southern stylings of a "pecan-crusted seitan" dish. The place was certainly well-attended when I went, and there is substantial parking space behind it, as well as an outdoor deck when weather suits. read more

We stopped here on our way into Northshore and it was delicious! The setting was super chill and there was only one other person inside, besides us. Kinda surprised me for a Saturday around lunchtime. You order at the counter and the menus are easy to see as soon as you walk in. The woman who took our order was kind and the regular at the bar suggested the chili, which we got! In typical Carmen fashion, I forgot to take a photo of my dang foooood! But I had the Zucchini Griddle Cakes and they were extremely delicious! The texture was perfect and it was very flavorful! It was a tad bit spicy and even though I was hungry I still had food to take home. There is a table inside with condiments and napkins and forks, etc. on it so you do everything once you get your food, which is delivered to your table. The chili was good but too spicy for me so I couldn't finish it. So if you're a wimp like me, just know it's spicy! Parking is easy behind the l restaurant. I'm not sure if maybe that's how it's supposed to taste, but I couldn't get past a few bites and just let my takeout wait until I got home. After adding salt and a peanut sauce, it was better, but definitely not worth paying that much in order to flavor my own food myself. We stopped at Sluggo's after searching for vegetarian food in Chattanooga. We were driving through town and decided to stop and dine in. We had our dog with us so we sat outside on the back patio. The staff was with us right away and was super friendly. We ordered the club, the wing wrap, and also a wing appetizer. All the food was really good. I like how the menu states that nothing is microwaved or deep fried, it's also 100% vegan. We got the club because how many times do you see a veggie club in a menu? This double decker sandwich was not only really good but it was unique! We upgraded and got a side of mashed potato's as well with a mushroom gravy and they were also fabulous. The vegan ranch was yummy and my wing wrap had great proportion of buffalo, ranch, and veggies. Our meal came out fast and it was a lot of food. Great vegan eats in Chattanooga. In an area without many vegetarian-friendly restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised to find Sluggo's. It's like an eclectic diner, where you can dine in or call ahead of takeout. As some have echoed, it may not be the healthiest food, but that's what makes it even more appealing. This place won't scare away the common omnivore and will likely provide all patrons with something they'll find daringly delicious. The seitan wings "spicy cheeky" were very good and legitimately spicy. I often get letdown by so-called spicy foods, but these wings had a kick. The seitan was very filling and I'm glad I didn't order any other appetizers, or I wouldn't have been able to eat my entree! The wings also came with some veggies to make an impromptu salad. Entree: Pesto Portobello Quesadilla. The cashew uncheese was so good, it paired well together with the mushrooms and pesto. A very satisfying meal. Late review, but this place is still fresh on my mind! My husband and I found this place on yelp, of course, and stopped here for Sunday brunch while visiting family in Chatt-town. It's one of the few restaurants in the area specializing in vegan/vegetarian cuisine. The atmosphere is pretty hipster, but also appeals to a more traditional crowd. There is outdoor seating in the front and back of the building. The brunch crowd was pretty steady; it didn't feel crowded, but there were a steady flow of customers from the time we arrived until the time we left. Orders are placed at a walk up counter, then you choose your seat and wait to be served. I ordered the squash omelet, with potatoes and salad as a side; I have to admit, i wasn't sure what to expect with an omelet made from squash, but it was perfect and even better loaded down with fresh veggies! My husband ordered the scramble bowl, complete with grits, tofu eggs, spinach, and potatoes. My only wish is the the eggs and grits had more flavor. We also got a stack of vegan pancakes to share, which were light and fluffy, and sprinkled with a little powdered sugar. The portions sizes are large and we left very satisfied with the food and service. UPDATE: Sluggos does it again, except this time for dinner. Serving up pretty solid vegan dishes and a chill space to enjoy them. First, I love that Sluggos is open until 10pm; the already slim selection of vegan spots wherever we go, usually close early. Decent crowd for a Monday night, and a little bit chilly in the restaurant due to in/out traffic for a few people sitting on the outside patio. I ordered the mushroom, spinach, pesto quesadillas and they were really good; a side salad and mashed potatoes w/ mushroom gravy completed my meal. The salad was great, very fresh; the mashed potatoes were good, but the mushroom gravy tasted like it would fit better with a breakfast entree. My husband had the lentil patty mushroom melt and it too was very good. The bread was delicious! He really enjoyed it. His side of collard greens and sweet potato mash could have used more flavor, but all very fresh. Overall we enjoyed our dinner. For brunch or dinner, Sluggos is a great option. read more
