This place is great! In an area that's seemingly a little inconvenient to get to (close to a main intersection), but it's a great option since I work nearby. When you first walk in, it's a bit quiet and you have to wait for someone to come from the back to greet you, but be patient because once you're seated, service is attentive and available whenever you need it. There are lots of rustic-looking tables, which give it a sort of homey feel, and some tables can fit 12+, so they can definitely accommodate large groups. My colleagues always get something different, but I get the same thing every time: the grilled boneless pork shoulder and it is so good. The pork shoulder is a bit fatty and comes out juicy and flavorful from the grill - droolworthy. It comes with sauerkraut, but it's not your typical sauerkraut; it's more like a mild slaw with just enough acid to cut through the fatty pork. Also comes with your choice of side and sauce. The garlic toom is the only option in my opinion (of course, they have others), but get ready to have kickin' breath for the rest of the day. Others have gotten the lamb tongue, lentil soup, falafel, beef shawarma, borscht, pelmeni, eggplant rolls, and they have all been hits. Don't think I would ever come out of my way to this restaurant if I didn't know about it, but it's totally worth the trip! read more

Khachapuri (8.5/10): First time having khachapuri, so take this rating with a grain of salt. Without having other points of comparison, I can say this was delicious! It smells SO. GOOD. I have been running by Watertown Square for years smelling this aroma, but finally had the chance to taste the source. The cheese bread is yummy, but the egg really brings it together. Chicken Shawarma Wrap (8/10): Very solid shawarma wrap. Chicken was delicious, and ingredients were very creamy. An amazing post-run meal. Prices are fair. Phenomenal place. We've never had Armenian food and were in the area so we decided to stop in for lunch. The menu was confusing to me but only because I'm American and therefore I know nothing about any other nations' cultures or foods. Luckily after the native names of each menu item they had plain English explanations of what they were ... for, you know, us Americans. We ended up eating the flatbreads (tried to have a light lunch). Wonderful and very different from what we're used to (you know, like McDonald's and Subway). And my wife had the lentil soup which she said was fantastic. Slightly different flavoring than her own. The waitstaff was very attentive. Prices are right. Ambiance was really nice -- not loud at all. Admittedly the service was not the best. We were ready to pay and go for quite a while and the server never came over, he had to be flagged down. We also ordered a coffee that took a while to come. We then learned it was because traditionally it comes at the end of the meal, however our meal was finished for a while and we were ready to leave before the coffee even arrived. Fairly impressive eatery with a mix of small eats and larger plates. The lamb and beef kofta kebab was quite decent, nicely flavored and tender meat, if a too much side red onion. The eggplant salad was really delicious, moist, complex, and variegated in texture(s). The shared Georgian cheese flatbread with cheese seemed most similar to a pizza, but maybe a bit too heavy and salty. The bread texture was interesting though and more pleasant than a regular pizza dough. The mushroom julienne was small, almost like a teaspoon or tablespoon, and maybe a bit too rich and too small a portion (though the menu did warn that it was a small portion). The eggplant rolls were really neat. The borscht soup was quite rich and yummy. Overall a nice experience and looking forward to trying more from this diverse menu. read more

It's a bit noisy so it can be hard to hear and we had to share a table with another group. It was fine and we had a great time. They have a small parking lot in the back or you can Uber. Absolutely amazing Georgian cuisine and gem. Loved the ajarian khachapuri which is essentially a bread as vessel for cheese & eggs which you then mix all together. The large portion (shareable) is very filling for 2 people. The charcoal grilled half rack of lamb came with 4 chops, reasonably portion sized with thin flatbread/pita and fresh toppings of red onions, pickles, etc. We also had a side of potatoes with creamy mushrooms and finished off with extra strong coffee. We arrived around 8:30pm on a Friday night and the restaurant was bustling! Had to wait 30 minutes for a seat and stayed all the way to closing. We had just gotten back from Armenia and could not stop talking about the Armenian food. Our friends were intrigued and we really wanted to treat them to an Eastern Armenian food experience. I no longer recommend this restaurant for dine in, the service is pretty bad or non-existent. If you've been to Georgia or Armenia it's like that there. Jana Grill & Bakery is a perfectly decent option for Armenian and other pan-Caucasian cuisine in the greater Boston area. I had the opportunity to sample a number of items on the menu, and was not disappointed by anything. Jana Grill & Bakery claims to serve "the flavor of Armenia and the surrounding countries." This, however, does not include Turkey or Azerbaijan, which could raise geopolitical qualms for guests. While some may appreciate a dash of geopolitical or ethnic conflict with their meal, it is understandable that others may not. And so we continue. I had the pleasure of sampling the Traditional Armenian Kebab, megruli khachapuri, and vegetable satsivi. The Traditional Armenian Kebab was a long and slender cylinder of ground flesh, seasoned with spices that I know but shall not name, served on a paper-thin lavash with onion and some pickled vegetables. The megruli khachapuri, a dish well known to me but nearly impossible to locate in the Boston area, was decent and unique: its dough was more buttery than most khachapuri I have eaten, both within and without Georgia, and the cheese was difficult to place. It was tasty and slightly unexpected, but not in an exceptional way. The vegetables were fairly standard grilled vegetables but they were served with a voluptuous bazhe sauce of walnuts. The sauce, it could be said, was the star of the show. As for the miscellanea: the prices are fine, not so-called "fine" dining, but not on the low end either. The value is not exceptional. Also, the wine menu has a number of interesting specimens, yet only the house wine is available by the glass. As for the service, it is fine. The space, however, is beautiful: well-decorated walls and unique tables make for a lively ambience. I would return to Jana Grill & Bakery once in a while. read more

I don't think I'll be back. I called to order dinner to pick up for myself. I figured I would try the mixed meat platter so I could sample a variety. The menu I looked at said it was $18... but that might have been old. But I was fine to pay a bit more even so. I called to order and told the girl I wanted that item. She asked me if I wanted rice or potatoes as the side. I said rice. She said come in 20 minutes. Ok great. I was excited to try it. I arrived and she gave me the bill. $63 for a plate for 2 people. I said "this isn't mine" but she said it was. I said I only ordered for 1 person. She said I said "for two" on the phone. Seems odd since I'm the only person eating. I think she messed it up and didn't want to admit it. I didn't know what to do since they made the food already. I should have left based solely on the fact that if staff doesn't admit to being wrong in this simple case, I can't imagine how they handle different situations. I agreed to pay and she said "it's ok. It's not that much food anyway" ... oh great. I'm paying $63 for not that much food for two people. Needless to say I left annoyed. I won't ever return. Incredible food and everything is super well-priced. We had baba ghanouj, falafel, pork shoulder chicken in yogurt sauce and tongue. Everything was nuanced and fresh in flavor, and came out hot. Wine list has a lot of fun and affordable (most things under $50) bottles from Armenia and Georgia as well - a total treat and one of the best values we've had in the Boston area. Our bill was just a shade over $200 for wine and plenty of food for four -- that's very hard to beat these days, and with friendly service as well, we'll be back soon! read more

They remodeled last year and the place is clean and cozy. We went to celebrate an 80th birthday and we had a party of 17 and we're there for a couple of hours and they were so accommodating and wonderful. The food is incredible, the owner is also the chef and we ordered a wide variety of food and eat item was amazing. The coffee with dessert was wonderful. I recommend Jana grill to anyone just for a lunch or a party like we did. We ordered bigger platters of things to share so we could taste everything. We have had take outs from here many times back in 2020 and decided to get some food again as we were in the area. We used to love their hummus, but last night the hummus was just not the same. It did not have the flavor or texture that we love. Their falafel used to be crunchy on the outside and light on the inside, but yesterday it was way too dense. A little on the dry side as well. The flavor was good though. Tried their Eggplant Caviar and although the flavor was on point, there was no texture, everything was just puréed and we were not the biggest fan of that. We will stick to Banaganush next time, it was sooo good. I wish they would bring back the mezze platter, it was such a fun way to taste all their dips. Their Jana Rice Pilaf is thankfully as good as we remember, if not better. Love the flavors and the addition of chickpeas, wild rice and carrots. Definitely something you cannot miss. We used to also love their Adjarian Khachapuri but did not get to try it this time. Not sure how things have changed over the last 2 years, but most dishes sure tasted different. It was overall a 3.5 star meal, but considering our previous meals were 4.5 stars, I guess I owe them a 4 star rating! The restroom was very clean and smelled good too.
