Before I had found this dentist I had been having bad luck with dentists. I either found dentists that accepted my insurance and I'd leave with my mouth feeling dirtier than when I came, or I would find a decent dentist that didn't accept my insurance. I'm so happy I found first care dental in my neighborhood. The office is nice inside with a huge flat screen TV in the waiting room. Everyone that works there is friendly. All the equipment they use is very modern. I went to get a cavity filled. I was a little nervous about the pain but Dr. Espinal-Hefner assured me I would have no pain and she was right. The customer service has gotten worst since the passing of the last dentist. The person at the front desk doesn't speak to everyone and isn't the most pleasant. They expect you to pay money if you're late or cancel an appointment ( it may be canceling an appointment). I am eight months pregnant and I've neen going there for years today I walked in NO ONE SPOKE TO ME, the doctors were late and never even said I'm sorry the train traffic anything. This place is messy, dirty, and dusty. Once in the seat, I wanted to get out asap and only agreed to the cleaning although I need more work done. The receptionist is unprofessional and incapable of fulfilling her duties. Her job is literally to greet people and assist them, but she does not want to be bothered. It's not just that she isn't helpful, she is unapologetically rude. A couple entered the office to inquire about an appointment. She told them they couldn't be in her office and asked if they read the notice on the door. It was apparent that they had limited English skills but she completely disregarded that and asked them to leave and call to make an appointment. Ironically, she asked them to leave due to COVID protocols, however, her mask was down exposing her mouth and nose the entire time I was in her presence. Her delivery and tone were just so nasty but I wouldn't expect much from someone uneducated and ghetto. I blame the owner for continuing to employ her. The owner has a responsibility to the community and his patients, to employ someone who is friendly and helpful. I don't know if in her personal life she is miserable, but there really is no excuse; she shouldn't bring all that negativity into the workplace. Do yourself a favor, keep it movin'. DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE. I had an appt scheduled for a Friday morning at 10am with my son. I get to the property and I notice that the office wasn't fully open yet as the gate was only half way up. Ok...no problem. I stand there with my son and another gentleman who was also waiting. It was probably 10:02 am when my phone rings and the lady on the other end says, "Are you outside?" Yes. I reply. She begins to apologize and says that her dental hygienist had an emergency and that she needed to reschedule. I thought, sure, no problem. Even hygienist have emergencies and besides I lived close by. She immediately rescheduled me for the following week. When I arrived to my appt the following week, as I enter the office, I notice two young ladies in lab coats quickly get up and walk towards the back. I didn't think anything of it. I thought they were patients who had coincidently been called back for their appt. I proceed to enter and there is a carriage with a baby in it facing the television which was extremely loud and a secretary behind her desk. I was trying to figure out if the patients who walked away left the baby there or if the baby was the secretary's. Whatever. The secretary gives me the usual paperwork to complete which I did in 5 min. Approximately 15 minutes later, one of the young ladies with a white lab coat came to get my son and I. She placed us in separate rooms side by side. As I walked through the hallways, I saw the other young lady with white scrubs on the phone in an office. The young lady begins to take my x-rays and I can hear the other young lady who was on the phone was now with my son. She continues to take my x-rays when suddenly the girls that was taking my sons x-rays come to my room and takes over. Strange. But I don't say anything. Maybe she's taking over for a student. She then goes over to the computer to review my x-rays. She then asks in spanish, "Do you smoke? Do you drink cofffee or Coca Cola?" To which I reply neither. She says, "Your teeth are a little yellow". Meanwhile I've been bleaching my teeth for over a year since finishing with my braces. She proceeds to glance at my x-rays, comes back and says open side as she places the little round mirror and her tool and starts scraping away at my teeth. In my mind, I'm so confused. Isn't a dentist supposed to do this? My dumb ass doesn't say anything and she continues to play dentist and half ass starts to clean my teeth. She then goes back to my x-rays and tells me I have 3 small cavities which totally blows me away. Keep in mind I've had braces for over 2 years under the care of a professional in Manhattan. I haven't had a cavity since I was 12. I take very good care to floss, brush, bleach...everything. I just need a cleaning!!!!! She finishes her cleaning and proceeds to ask if I want to fill my cavities today to which I reply No. I'll make an appt. When I get to the front desk, the secretary is trying to schedule me for a follow up to fill the cavities. I ask, "Is that girl a dentist?" She says, "No, she's a hygienist but as a hygienist she can also fill your cavities. I said, "No, I'll call to schedule an appt'. I continued to sit in the waiting area while I waited for my son. The curiosity in me had to ask. So I turn to the secretary and ask, "Is that your baby?" She says, "Yes, it is. He's so quiet now. You had to see him before. This office was such a mess. He's so quiet now!!!" WHAT????? Am I in the twilight zone???? I ask, "Is there a dentist here?" She replies, "Oh, He won't be here for a long time!!" I'm so confused at this point. So you mean, everyone here is playing dentist? My insurance has you listed on their website but there is no dentist here? I'm supposed to let this girl just drill my teeth and there is no dentist in the BUILDING!!!!! When I got home I was so upset with myself for not having said anything to the hygienist. I couldn't even sleep that night. I opened my laptop to see the reviews and there it was. TERRIBLE!!! What had I done?? I called my insurance immediately thereafter and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY PATIENT WITH A PERSON PLAYING DENTIST..THEN GO HERE. So do yourself a favor, if it is recommended that you need some serious dental work done - GET A SECOND OPINION, or better yet, don't come here at all. I normally go to the NYU clinic, but decided to check into Janas Dental just to get a cleaning. They wanted some x-rays which was fine until I actually stepped back there. First of all, I sincerely hope they aren't using saran wrap to cover everything prior to patient use. I was really surprised when they took my x-rays and used this blue - reusable film that hung off the wall and covered the thing (very poorly) in saran wrap. Not only that but they seriously need to get a repair man to look at their machine because every time they aligned the cylinder against my cheek I had to hold the machine in place so that it wouldn't move around and hit me in the face. I could have forgiven the faulty machine, but then the dentist came along. So he introduces himself as Doctor Weiner (he's clearly fresh out of dental school or something) sits down and just when I'm about ready for my cleaning (especially after I watched the assistants put back the blue film without even cleaning it) he goes off. First he says a root canal I have has failed so I either need it fixed or extracted. Then he says my right molar has a huge cavity and needs to undergo a root canal or extraction. He also tells me my wisdom teeth are impacting and need to be removed asap. So he's spewing all these things at me and I'm internally freaking out because I KNOW I practice relatively good dental hygiene and I know that six months ago when I went to the dentist, nothing like this showed up in my x-rays. That wasn't even the worst of it, he looks at me as if I'm stupid and asks: "Do you want to do any of that tonight?" I was absolutely flabbergasted, I only came to the dental office with enough money to pay for the $50 cleaning (+ x-rays) and I can't even begin to imagine how much a root canal would cost at this place (I paid $1000 for the first one done at an endodontist). So I just feebly sit there and mutter "no" and Dr. Weiner lets out a sigh of exasperation and asks if I want to do anything about the tooth that is "diseased" and needs to be fixed, again I mutter "no" and look away from him as he stares at me as if I'm making the dumbest decision in my life or something. Reluctantly, he decides to take a look at my mouth and takes a peek at my teeth. He comments that I have two small cavities on my lateral incisor and canine tooth (left side). Now normally, with my other dentist we ignore small caries because they tend to resolve themselves on their own and I sat there wondering, "how the hell did I get cavities?". Dr. Wiener interrupts my thoughts and asks "Do you want to take care of those cavities?" I look up and prepare to shake my head and he adds, "You have to AT LEAST do something tonight." I realize that I'm folding in and normally I don't get "hustled" or give into high pressure sales tactics, but when you have a doctor - AN AUTHORATIVE figure telling you, you have X-Y-Z wrong with you, you're more inclined to believe them. I just basically got the entire shit thrown at me and I'm freaking out in my chair wondering how am I going to pay for all this work and thinking of that ONE TIME I didn't floss before bed because I was too tired - that was definitely the cause of all this. So I reluctantly gave in and said that I would go forward with the fillings. He says, "Oh, I guess I have to tell you the price then." - like yes... that would be nice to know. "$100 for each tooth." I bit my lip and nod and tell him to go forward that my boyfriend will help me pay. He nods and says he'll do the cleaning and then drill and fill the caries. The one thing I came, the single thing that I wanted done at this clinic was probably the worst thing I ever experienced. Literally, the cleaning took less than five minutes and my teeth still felt filthy. He also managed to get a whole bunch of polish up my nose as he messily ran over my teeth. So a less than five minute crappy cleaning followed by some drilling and quick fillings and I'm done. I remove myself from the chair shakily, but I'm told to go back because they need to redo the x-rays. Again with the unsanitary reusable blue film and the x-ray machine that can't hold up on its own. That took another five minutes and finally I'm out. We pay at the front desk, 10% discount if you pay with cash, whoopdido - doesn't matter because we still paid so much. I'm ready to leave but Dr. Weiner comes back out and says, "Oh do you want a referral for your wisdom tooth extraction. I'm supposed to give you one before you leave I guess." so I nod, still traumatized by his abrasiveness, receive the referral and get on out of there. My appointment was at 10 it's 11 and u still haven't even been acknowledged. Every time I come they seem to be training a new doctor and we are the Guinea pigs. Worst experience of my life, come here if you have nowhere else to be and nothing else to do. They do provide free tv in the waiting room with a sprinkle of ignorance and arrogance. Terrible experience and the extremely BAD customer service at JANUS DENTAL. It is appalling that I had to call the dentist's office, specifically Frances to be issued a refund for a poor teeth cleaning. After a series of telephone calls requesting my refund, and being told several different stores, Frances then became very belligerent, and then told me I would not get the entire amount refunded to me, but only a portion, because the insurance company had not paid the full amount. In other words, she LIED because the phone company did in fact send the entire amount, actually paid $35 more. It's appalling that a person, namely, Frances' to behave in such a manner for a mere $85. It is ridiculous to have been treated this way and the perhaps some customer service training would benefit your staff. Please know I will not be returning as a patient there. read more

This review concerns my dental visits and being attended to by Neil J. Auerbach. This dentist should have been a stand up comedian since he tells so many jokes - bad ones at that! He makes fun of your teeth and makes comments that a 12 year old would consider infantile. On this visit he banged on my teeth to take my temps out and then asked IF I LIKED IT. When I said that I have felt worse he exclaimed "how many men have been banging you in the head?" First of all, this comment doesn't make any sense and is also grossly unprofessional. When I told the woman at the front desk (Francis) what he said she remarked "maybe you don't get his jokes". I get jokes but they shouldn't pertain to physical abuse as I have been a victim of such abuse in the past. And besides, he is there to be a dentist, not a comedian. I told her of course you are going to take his side because you are his employee. She roared back and wrinkled her face and said "NO, don't tell me it's because I work for him." Then she told me that I could go somewhere else if I don't like it here. Duh! Thanks I didn't know that already. On this same visit he held up a mold of my teeth of a VERY dark grey color and asked "do you like this shade?" When he worked on my seven temp crowns on my previous visit, he banged my teeth and told me to raise my left hand if it hurt, so I did. He did not stop banging my teeth so I grabbed his right hand and he said that I should not have done that. I told him that I had to because he didn't stop and it hurt bad. I told him that I could take pain but that really hurt and he replied "I've seen tougher." Anyway, now the genius decides that maybe he should numb the area with Novocaine. He then kept repeating to his assistant "floss, floss, floss" and I looked up and saw the assistant laugh. I know that he was implying that her teeth would end up like mine if she didn't. At that point I had had enough and yelled out "you are being unprofessional." He said "I was just asking her for floss." I disregarded this comment but upon thinking about it later, he didn't use floss until much after that. So, he lied and WAS ridiculing my teeth. I have been to multiple dentists and have never had to experience this ludicrous behavior. This dentist was both unprofessional and emotionally unintelligent! Being there made me feel totally uncomfortable! Not only is this dentist a joke, but his tacky office which reflects upon his rude employees is a joke. I've never wrote a review before in my life, but I'm noticing I'm not the only one who has had a bad experience here. That goes to show it must be the practice and not the patients. This place deserves to be SHUT DOWN. Not only is the person in charge FRANCES rude, it seems like she might have anger management issues. I called to confirm my approval from my insurance for a deep cleaning and some other stuff, only to be rushed off the phone. I had to call an insurance rep to speak to her. The rep was able to straighten things out for my next apt but did warn me FRANCES had a bad attitude. I schedule my apt, and was told I had a $250 co- payment fee for my deep cleaning. I paid only because I was told by the dentist I really needed it. Once I'm in the back room ready for the procedure FRANCES walks in to confront me about the conversation we had when I called to confirm my approval. She told me and I quote "I ONLY CHARGE YOU THE $250 CO-PAYMENT FEE BECAUSE YOU WERE RUDE TO ME ON THE PHONE! I DIDN'T HAVE TO CHARGE YOU!" If this is not the pettiest most unprofessional conduct I have experienced in my life I don't know what is. So apparently she can be rude to you but you can't be rude to her She completely accused me of being rude to her!!! She was even making faces as she spoke as if trying to control herself from loosing it. This lady has some serious anger issues. She's nasty, she's rude and completely unprofessional. I have no idea who would hire such a miserable person! Oh and btw , they did a regular cleaning. They didn't even do what my insurance paid for. Deep cleaning are way more invasive and last longer than 5mins. They also do them in quadrants most of the time and numb the area. Great experience at this dental office. The doctor is professional, friendly and treats his patients with respect. His work is outstanding. Yes, It is a small office but I assure you that there is coordination and everyone in the office is on board with what is going on with each patient and knows what thier needs are. Not Anymore!!! this place is horrible. Be prepared to wait at least an hour now when you go. Dr. Hafner is no longer there and the place is a mess! First off it smelled like fish for some odd reason, the wait times are ridiculous and now they have 2 dentist in there dr. drummond and some other new dr. and they both look like they're still in medical school. one with a nose piercing etc. Dr. Drummond did a cleaning on me and didnt even clean all my teeth she only cleaned the top and bottom outer and not inner (mind you my dental plan covers all of that). I was looking for a GOOD dentist for myself and my family. I was not disappointed when I went to this office with my daughters--ages 5 and 15. I was given an appointment for a Sunday; a plus. The office was clean, the staff was friendly, the dental assistant was extremely knowledgeable and the dentist--Dr. Benzi-- was professional and wonderful with my daughters. The only reason why I rated them 4 stars is because I have to return to have a crown put in and I hope to rate them 5 stars once that's done. Wow, I have to say that this place gets better and better. Seriously. So I went to this office looking for my previous dentist since I had a good experience, but unfortunately she took a leave of absence and so they found a substitute. Well, I was a bit hesitant since I want a smile make over and I don't know this new dentist. But that's when I found Dr. JOSHUA PERLMAN! All I can say is oh wow, this dentist is the bomb!!! I mean it"s like when you find water in the dessert. The man is a perfectionist, and I love that! He's done such a tremendous job and he takes his time, answers your questions, he's funny, very professional, and he's handsome too. lol, I know my husband may get a little jealous, but this dentist makes you feel so comfortable that you know you are in perfect hands. I really mean that. I've been traumatized by my past experiences with so many butchers before, til I found this place, and the staff there is like family! I know all of their names and they know mine, they're so warm and professional that I wouldn't mind taking them home :) that's how great these people are. Before I came here I went to a dentist in Washington heights who had supposedly won multiple awards but when it came to fill out a simple military dental clearance she took it as free money knowing anything she put down I would have to get done and pay for so for a second opinion I decided to try Janas dental which I couldn't be happier with the staff is extremely friendly I was assigned dr weiner who I don't see how anyone could give a bad review especially such as the one posted on here because he completely threw out everything my former dentist had listed and explained all work that needed to be done and made it very clear that all work would be preventive maintenance and not really needed now and when I decided to get it done ASAP dr weiner made sure that I knew I didn't need it and it was all optional then during the procedure he frequently asked how I was doing and if I needed more numbing and thoroughly explained what he was doing step by step there was no pressuring into anything I was not comfortable paying for or getting done I guess some people don't want to hear their teeth are jacked up read more
