Positives: + Hospitable welcome, alerted us by phone when the rooms was ready + Welcome gift (nice touch) + Large room + Gas fireplace which worked well + Comfortable king bed + Pleasant grounds + Separate entrance for this room + Convenient location + Excellent homemade breakfast with seating times to prevent crowding Negatives: - Road noise (on a very busy road, traffic including trucks 100 feet away) - Musty smelling, we couldn't keep windows open at night due to road noise - No sugar, etc. in room for coffee - Bathroom outlets not working - Bathroom door difficult to close - Blinds were broken on one side, and just left standing in the corner of the room, these should have been removed if they could not be repaired - Large piece of plastic left on the window sill, looked dirty there, not well cleaned - Uncomfortable sleep sofa couch for sitting and small TV - Microwave not working (actually it was after we figured out nobody plugged it in) - Outside light over door is on automatic timers, too bright for the light filtering shade, so the room is lit up at night (we prefer a dark room for sleeping) - Rosa backs up to the kitchen, and we could hear a lot of banging and noise at 10pm as they were doing prep work for the next morning The negatives balance out the positives for a 3-star stay. It is a B&B with a beautiful shared common area, including working fireplace with stocked wood ready to burn. It is a stone's throw from the water and would be ideal for anyone bringing kayaks. Claude also allows pets which is hard to find. The location is outstanding. You can walk to town and the Seaport easily. In addition, it is about a 5 minute walk from the train station. This place is idea for someone wanting to get away from NYC for a weekend. No car required. Muffins, coffee, and tea are complimentary. I noticed a BBQ grill outside, which I think can be used by guests. There is a common kitchen and dining room table for guests to share. The bathrooms are a little bit small, however, that is part of the charm. The ONLY downside, IMO, was the walls are a little bit thin and the beds are a not the most plush. This is a minor inconvenience for such a great value and location, location, location to everything Mystic has to offer. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and couples. I booked a week long stay for our vacation for my family and one for my in-laws. I apparently used…read moresome third-party app for our reservation and the regular hotel site for my in-laws. Our room and rate was for a room with a pool view. Instead we received a room with zero windows, no apology and instead blamed it on the third-party listing, that they should have called us to tell us the room we booked was unavailable. We drove 8 hours to get here. Then the key cards to our room didn't work so they had to give us a physical key, and of course there is only one key, so my husband and I have to coordinate our comings and goings. Meanwhile, my in-laws who had a non-view room originally ended up getting an ocean-view instead. When I complained the front desk told me I needed to complain to the third-party and they always recommend booking directly bc then they would work with us, therefore abdicating any responsibility for their mistake. UPDATE: the manager got us a different room with a window and balcony. She was extremely nice, understanding and professional. We are so pleased that this issue was resolved to our satisfaction.

Management became extremely confrontational and told us that we were "not a good fit," simply because we asked about having an additional guest and parking spot. We were even threatened with having the police called, despite the fact that we were not arguing or causing any kind of disturbance. We asked for a refund, but instead, the owner decided to "upgrade" our room. Our friend was not allowed to park at the hotel, and we were then charged an additional $40 for him to stay in the room that we had already paid $420 for. The entire situation completely ruined what was supposed to be a special night celebrating my niece's birthday. The way we were treated was extremely disappointing, especially considering we were simply trying to clarify whether an additional guest and parking spot would be allowed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend the Blue Whale to anyone, and I will not be staying here again.

While freezing cold, it was a pretty view with a perfect peek-a-boo of the sun going down this time of the year. The antiquated heater was pretty loud and we wondered why it wasn't replaced by the mini-split which provided air conditioning. After a good night sleep, the kettle in the room allowed us to enjoy a beverage as we lounged a bit before heading down for breakfast. While just a light continental, it was a lovely room with nice, fresh offerings and perfect to hold us over until brunch later. Is this place perfect? No - it's an old building which has been moved & has quirks and wear. Is it fancy? No - not at all. Even the staff seems totally casual. But it's warm, comfortable, friendly & fun.
