Quite simply the number one reason to visit this small town assuming you don't already have a reason to be there. Excellent in almost every way and humble all the way. Food to service and decor to menu knowledge; really worth your time.

Wife has been wanting to visit Janet's for a while now. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the hostess, and had our names taken down for a table. We were seated fairly quickly, and taken outside, and he staff is super friendly and welcoming. So why 3 stars? I rated this place somewhat average for the food. I ordered the cheeseburger with onion rings. I don't know how long the cheeseburger sat before being brought out but it sat long enough for the bottom bun to become soggy and messy. The onion rings were delicious but it would've been nice to send them out with some sort of dipping sauce. I didnt try my wife's sandwich but she was happy with it. My daughter however, was not a fan of the Mac and cheese, I even noticed as she was eating it, it looked really dry and not cheesy. So the food I'd rate as just ok, but the service and overall feel in the cafe were great.

Cinnamon roll, homemade blueberry muffin and sides of bacon for breakfast at this quaint little roadside stop. Service was decent considering how quickly the place filled up while we ate. We ended up coming back for lunch- I got the BLTA wrap and the chicken wrap for my partner- not my favorite type of fries might suggest trying a different side next time. Will be back for sure. outdoor and indoor setting rustic cabin like.

It's been years since I came to Janet Montana. Never knew about this place until my friend from Temecula recommended we come here for breakfast. So, in the past- I'd meet them halfway on I-15 south- and we'd bee line here for breakfast. Typically arrive here about 30 minutes before opening time, to lock in our motorcycle parking. There's a small private parking lot that's shared with some other businesses. Two entrances/ exits leading to the lot and things can be a bit jammed. Luckily enough, plenty of street parking as well. No reservations. First come, first served- make sure to check in with the hostess. I forgot how huge the portions are! My gosh! We arrived for the lunch crowd on January 2nd. Thought we'd be waiting longer than expected- barely 5 minutes! There's no fancy electric paging device or text message. The hostess will scream your name a few times. When our name was called, we walked in front of the pie display and was hoping to have room for a slice. We got a cozy booth and since it's the holiday season- I enjoyed a nice hot mug of pumpkin chai! Peppermint mocha is another seasonal drink offered. I figured on having something "light". So, why not get a HALF Sandwich Special? Well, the first half of my order arrived. Soup. A HUGE bowl of corn tortilla chicken soup! I didn't realize the menu said BOWL! This is what happens when you skim the menu and expected a measly cup! LOL. The soup was hearty. Crispy corn tortilla strips and huge chunks of chicken breast. My second plate arrived with the HALF sandwich: tuna melt on marble rye. I swear I was just having a conversation earlier this morning about how much I LOVE marble rye! I looked at the "half" sandwich... and it looked like I got the bigger half ! The tune melt just floweth from the bread! My first couple of bites, tuna melt chunks just fell onto my plate! So tasty! Creamy, cheesy, and with lil diced celery. I opted for cottage cheese as my side. And the monkey dish, with my cottage cheese- was a big enough portion! Good lawd! I looked at my FIL salad- and they sure as heck don't skimp. The black olives pile on his plate is basically what you buy a can of from the store! Janet Montana's must have 55 gallon drums of ranch dressing back there because wait til you see how much ranch dressing you'd get! Sadly to say- I had no trim for a slice of pie. I had a food coma! Staff is amazing as I remember. One toilet fo the ladies room.

Third time here quick service and very friendly Old ranch feeling here. We had a table for 6 of us. Some had breakfast and others had lunch, are food came out in shifts, but altogether which was fast. I must try if you are visiting Alpine! Their breakfast plates are delicious and the biscuits and gravy is a must. The gravy is so flavorful and the biscuits are the perfect texture not dry at all. I got the one egg breakfast plate and upgraded to the biscuits and gravy, and it was super filling. The ambience is 10/10, I recommend eating outside if the weather is nice. Parking was full when we came at 12:30 PM so I recommend getting there earlier or park on the street which wasn't too bad. We'll definitely be coming by again!

A lovely diner with a real quaint cozy feel. Exactly the kind of place you'd expect to find all the way out in Alpine. Went with a large group of friends and were able to be seated quickly outside. Portions are absolutely ginormous. We paid $6 for a cinnamon roll and my friend's jaw dropped when she saw how huge it was. We were all able to share it with her. I personally got the breakfast burrito with pork chorizo, which came with a side of refried beans which I actually didn't know about, and it was delicious. Was able to be full after half of the burrito. Everyone was super happy with their meals, ranging from pumpkin pancakes to eggs benedict to eggs and bacon. They kept raving about how we'll have to go back again and how they haven't had real diner food done right like this in a long time. I also overheard someone in the bathroom line saying they take a yearly trip to the area from the East Coast, and Janet's Montana is always a must-stop for them. Unfortunately, we came on a rainy day and we had to cut our meal short as we got rained out of our outside seating, but the staff was apologetic and there was nothing they could really do about it. I'd opt for inside seating next time in general if you can since the inside was really cute!

Came here with my little sister for a late breakfast, and I am so glad we stopped by. The ambiance was really cute, very rustic-cabin type of vibe, and the food was definitely comfort food at its very best. So we were both very happy. What we got: - Country Fried Steak: this came with a stack of pancakes, making it a very substantial order. Very comforting, hearty meal. Personally, I added a little hot sauce, and it made it even more delicious. - Cinnamon Roll French Toast: perfectly sweet, and not too eggy of a French toast. - Eggs Benedict Country Style Overall this place is really solid, they were pretty busy, but we were seated instantly. The waitstaff were all wonderful as well.

We were out in the boonies in El Cajon for almost a week and wanted to grab breakfast on the way home. With not a lot of places nearby, I looked on Yelp and with good ratings we selected Janet's Montana Café in Alpine. They are open for breakfast and lunch, no dinner. This is a popular place and they were packed around 11am on a Sunday morning. When you pull into the parking lot and see the restaurant, it looks like an old town lodge with an all dark wood exterior, wood walkways and wood railings. It is a hard to miss the building with a big bear on the corner of the roof. The parking lot is on the smaller side, but there is also some street parking, and the parking lot at the tavern next door doesn't have any "customers only" signs so we ended up parking there. There are two dining room areas inside as well as outdoor patio seating. Right inside the front door is the waiting area which reminded me of a barn with red wood walls, wood floors and benches and, a tin roof. There is a display case with delicious looking freshly baked pies, cakes, and other bakery items. One dining room is pretty much floor to ceiling all light wood with antler lighting fixtures overhead. We ate in the second dining room which had wood tile on the floor, with wood planks on the ceiling, and log cabin style walls. This is definitely not your average café, and is a neat and cozy environment. Their menu is a good size, and has many classic breakfast and lunch items, as well as a specials menu. The portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. I just had a two eggs and bacon combo which came with four slices of bacon, a big portion of hash browns, and two slices of sourdough bread. My girlfriend had the French toast. The slices of toast were pretty thick and as good as it was, she could barely eat half of it. The other member of our party had the strawberry pancakes. The pancakes were huge with a generous portion of strawberries and whipped cream, and she could only eat about half of it as well. Unfortunately, my phone battery died right after we sat down, so no food pictures on this review. For as busy as it was, service was fast and friendly and it wasn't overly noisy in the smaller "log cabin" wall dining area where we sat. This is definitely a cool place to check out and dine at.

Enchiladas ARE SOOOO GOOD. I had it for my birthday breakfast. Great taste highly recommend. Restaurant itself is nice and cute, definitely eat at the outdoor patio seating :)

Wow, this is a FIND! The exact type of place you hope to stumble upon when visiting a city off the beaten path. We started with nice salads (I had the Caesar and my friend had the Mediterranean; both were perfect!) I had the turkey club with steak fries and onion rings, my friend had a burger with fries and we had an order of banana cream pie to try. Service was fast and the food was fantastic. Decor was rustic and fun. We sat on the patio on a beautiful December day. Recommend!

The parking lot is really small and there's going to be wait but it's worth it! Friendly service and a nice menu selection. Hubby and I both went for the Sausage & Eggs breakfast (2 eggs, 3 sausage links, and a generous portion of hash browns). We also got a side of pancakes. Delicious!

Wow they know their desserts!!! Pick a pie any pie...oh your vegan, great! They have edible dessert for you too. Walking in is a counter filled with homemade pies and cakes and cookies. We had their carrot cake and coconut cream pie. The coconut cream pie was my favorite, light and dense all at once with shredded coconut throughout the cream and topping. Perfect crispness of crust. A true cheers to my dad (as this is his favorite kind of pie). The carrot cake, good but not my favorite, slightly on the dryer side and the frosting was very sweet. OH! And we had their chocolate cookie - the thing was still soft eating it 2 days later. Delicious! read more

We left Julian, and were so hungry! The restaurants in Julian had very long lines, so we headed home to San Diego. After looking up places to stop, we found this--we're so happy we did! The open-faced chili burger was perfect! The quality of a burger was excellent, and the bean-beef chili was seasoned to perfection! I LOVED the onions rings, too! My husband enjoyed his Egg Benedict and our children liked the wild rice soup and chicken fingers. We took desserts to-go, after other customers raved about them. We'll definitely make a special trip back, especially since they serve breakfast all day. And, oh, the waitress was very kind!!!! read more

Went here for my sister's 80th birthday and had friendly service and great food! I had the chicken walnut on a croissant (not on menu, but one of my favorites from past visits). What really wowed all 4 of us was the homemade sausage/potato soup. Absolutely delicious! We had carrot cake for dessert. Yum! The cafe is rustic and charming, and very easy for my sister to get around in with her walker too. We had a 20 minute wait for a table, but it was so worth it, and there are benches in the hallway to sit at to wait. We all highly recommend Janet Montana's Cafe! It's a special getaway trip to the country to enjoy excellent food and wonderful servers. read more

Great service and food. My husband and friend got the burrito with chorizo, they loved it. I got the egg Benedict, delicious. My other friend got the carne asada plate. It was not a piece of carne asada, it looked like big pieces of shredded beef, but he liked it. It looks packed at first, but it took about 20 minutes to get a table on a Saturday morning. I really liked the inside vibe of the restaurant. Highly recommend. read more

Great Local and Good Tourist Stop! Location: Easy to find off main street but parking can be a bear especially if you're on your way to or from off-roading in the desert and pulling a rig. Ambiance: Rustic small town feel. Very comfortable and inviting. Service: Kind and friendly staff but this place can get hopping on the weekends so there can be a wait to get seated and to get your meal. Otherwise, service is great and comes with a smile. Food: Love the portions, perhaps too much. Started with the Greek salad and it was fresh but dang large. Shared with others that were with me to make sure I had room for the rest of the meal. A few of us ordered the prime rib with baked potato and veggies. Not Bobby Flay level but definitely tasty. What makes Janet's one of our stops is the pies. I've had just about all of them and the only disappointment was when they ran out. Cleanliness: Good - The tables and chairs are always clean as is the restroom. Occasionally the floor my need a little pick me up but that's usually because it's a family place and kids,...well, they're kids. Overall: This is a great stop and if you've never stopped by I definitely recommend it. Is it a 5 Star in comparison to downtown SD, no. But for Alpine it is so as long as there's time to stop by for meal and dessert we will. read more

This is a place I've been about 100 times and never reviewed. We love it and it's a swiss army knife of breakfast joints. Have a big party with kids - check, intimate meal with your honey - check, fun times with your mother in law... let's not go too far. I typically stick to just breakfast here. My last meal was eggs over easy on CBH. Now, I have had times where the egg was still way under done but this trip was excellent. Solid food, nice people, great atmosphere. Please support a great place! read more

We always stop here on our way back to Iowa from visiting in San Diego. Breakfast is one of the best with generous servings. Recently had the fruit crepes - delicious. Husband always orders the half sized biscuits and gravy - quite a lot and also delicious. Coffee is great too. Neat atmosphere and friendly service. read more

Excellent service! The food is very good too, but large portions (you may want to share). We had the corned beef hash, has browns, scrambled eggs (real eggs not out of a carton), biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and bacon . I also ordered an iced latte (pretty decent). Love this place! Wait. No no. It's always packed and we always have to wait to get in so I'm going to tell you not come here because I don't want to share! Honestly the best waffles and brunch food ever. I hate going into the city just for a decent brunch and let me tell you the city doesn't have anything on this place. Lodge style Cabin look with outdoor seating. Pretty sure they even have mimosas in giant ball jar glasses with stems. Original and unique and classy. You get a little mountain atmosphere without having to drive the whole way to big bear. Love it. read more

First time first impression: ver good food. The ambience was different than your average chain it felt homey. As you walk in you definitely notice the different type of pies available, all looked yummy I really felt all the staff was friendly. Our waitress even started a conversation with us which added to the experience. The food portions are big and we were served quickly. What happened to our wonderful Janet's in alpine. We've been coming for years. Yesterday on my birthday at noon I took a friend here to celebrate. Her chicken fried steak was less then tasty, a whole plate full of mostly burnt potatoes. The muffin was hard. My taco salad is hard to mess up. Where is the quality control ? New cooks ? I will give it one more go and I am gone for good. I recommend this place to so many. The price increase is not worth it. The ambiance is still great and waitress nice. Where did the friend chicken on the menu go ? Looks like the menu has grown and the food less quality. Less choices is better. Please get back to the simplicity of the menu you had done years ago. read more

A very good breakfast establishment. I'm not a fan of lunches or dinners, they are somewhat pedestrian and not as flavorful as they could be, but if you're a meat and potatoes person, you'll probably be pleased. It can get very crowded on the weekend, especially for breakfast and brunch. Parking is challenging, but street parking is available. The rustic interior is nice and they have a small but nice outside dining area. This place captures the small town feel of Alpine, which is certainly an additional draw. read more

After another amazing visit to Lions Tigers and Bears, our group of five had a lovely lunch here. Our main server just put a smile on my face with his straightforward manner. And all who helped us did so in swift, unobtrusive ways...A seamless treat!!! Burgers, Greek salad, Cobb sandwich...Everything declared delicious, filling and come backable!!! Icing on the cake, almost literally, was learning that our friend who got the daily special also got a slice of pie or cake. read more

Found Janet's on yelp while we we're heading g out to Alpine. Walked in and was greeted by a large selection of pastry's, which looked delicious. We were seated very quickly and Madison helped us, she was awesome. We ordered an omelette and the corned beef hash breakfast. Not more than 5 minutes later our food was brought to our table. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Also, this place offers gluten free carrot cake and carrot cake muffins for those with gluten intolerances. If you are looking for a great place, cool atmosphere, and great customer service Janet's is great. read more

I had been to this place a number of years ago and still kept it on my places to visit again. On Friday, I made a special trip from the Tierrasanta area where I'd stayed and was quite pleased. Great service, great food and nice atmosphere. Parking can be a little tight as this place is quite popular but is well worth the trek! I was very pleased that this place is alive, well and still drawing the crowds. read more

Janet's is the coziest little spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner!! The grounds are sweet, with a stream running near it and little shops to browse through. The inside of the building is like a lodge, lots of old wood and a big rock fireplace for cool days! They also have a great patio for outdoor seating, nice and shady too! I've been for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and would recommend Janet's for all 3! I love their omelets, and their biscuits and gravy are delish! The ambiance at Janet's is great! I really feel like I'm in the country. Our wait time was 30 minutes but we were seated in less than 10. There are so many breakfast options to choose from but I decided on the country eggs Benedict with home fries and a side order of bacon. The meal was good however the eggs were over done and the yolks were not runny. The meal is filling but they have pies and desserts you can get to go. If you decide to check Janet's out go early as parking fills up. read more

Really great place--came here with my family! Staff was very kind and friendly (we asked for a little more maple syrup and our waitress brought a small plate of FIVE! She went above and beyond. Thanks Andrea!!)! It is a bit noisy--just adding that if that bothers some folk. Food tasted excellent. Personally I recommend the cinnamon roll french toast. Very nice place. The staff was very friendly and the customer service was spot on. Reminded me of a little place you would find in Kentucky or Tennessee. Great home style cooked food. Price was great for the portions you get, plus with the lunch specials and some of the dinner items, your dessert is free, and they are homemade desserts that taste great. Our family went on a Wednesday for brunch for my moms birthday. It was DELICIOUS! HUGE PORTIONS could probably share one meal with multiple people. Everyone ordered something different and we all LOVED our food. My husband and I go here every chance we have to get away for breakfast with just the two of us. The food here is great, and so is the service. We really like the atmosphere, which is better than the other Janet's Cafes. When the weather permits, we love sitting outside near the running water nearby. They never keep us waiting long for our food, and have yet to get our orders wrong...which is good cause we are always hungry when we go! This used to be my favorite breakfast place but mostly because of the mountainous cabin like atmosphere. Food is good and portions are decent but everything on the menu has gone up a dollar and I can't hardly afford to continue going there as much as I used to and there head chef left to flapjacks right down the road. We are regulars once a week my husband takes our two daughters after church. Food is amazing and big portions. Everyone is super friendly. Great country atmosphere too. Highly recommend Janet's. We love having such a great family restaurant in our small town. Janet's is good for breakfast lunch and dinner. read more

We love coming here for breakfast. I always get the Belgian waffle with fresh fruit. It is always delicious. A little crowded sometimes but if you can get there during the week, it is worth the drive. Don't go on Sundays very crowded with all the families after church. very noisy and the wait is long. read more

Its really hard to find such a authentic, old west style place in San Diego. This place is just that! Not the usual hipster laden, fusion style restaurants that have become the fad. This is just simple home cooking you would expect visiting your grandma in Montana! Breakfast is my favorite time! read more

This an excellent place to stop by after visiting one of the nearby casinos for breakfast or lunch. I've been here numerous times and they have delicious hamburgers and standard breakfast fair. One note they have great onion rings. The only negative is the parking, very limited. read more

This restaurant in Alpine has been open daily since the mandate for them to only serve curbside. There is packed seating inside with No Social Distancing or Masks! Total disregard for safety and the mandate. I and several people will never eat here again. Very disappointing! read more

Sooo fun. Feels like a homey place and delicious food. The servers are sweet and kind. The prices are good and I would have the recommend the peach iced tea it's amazing. One of my favorites place for a meal and they have great breakfast. read more
