My husband found this cute brewery while walking the dogs on our recent trip to Alpine. Outdoor area was so inviting and pet friendly that it was a no brainer to try it out. Our waiter, Nolan, not Simon... was funny, helpful, and even though they were busy he handled everyone like a champ. Nolan recommended a few options, which we took his advice on and ordered. I had the HOP CLOUD HAZY, very good and my husband had the GOOD TO GO IPA (2) so obviously it was good. The pretzel bites were delicious! We split the Jalapeno popper burger and fries. Very yummy, and a bit spicy but followed it up with my Hazy and it was all good. Highly recommend this place and kudos to Nolan for making it a great experience for us. read more

Terrible service. My husband & I went here when they first opened and the service was terrible. Swore we'd never go back. Fast forward to today - we received a gift card as birthday present months ago & we finally decided to use it today and unfortunately, had the same experience... slow service. We were there around 4pm & they were not busy at all. The staff actually looks & acts like they're unhappy to see you. Their sign says to grab a menu, pick a table & order from your server or at the bar. We waited 10 minutes for a server at our table that never came so I went to the bar & waited another 10 minutes to be helped by the 1 & only bartender serving the entire restaurant. So many more rude & weird things happened after this, including never getting our bill & the fact that 1/2 the tables were empty & dirty. Weirdest thing of all is there were about 2-4 men standing around doing nothing but serving dirty looks and the one & only female server kept sitting down at 1 guests table. We were really excited to come here after we saw that they were offering, tallow fries, so we figured let's go here for Valentine's Day . We wanted just a fast little dinner . We ordered the jalapeno burger and chicken sandwich with fry's and wings and everything was so so so bad server was kinda weird and acted slow , they seemed very short staffed , a couple left because no one came to their table. The chicken sandwich was burnt and so dry and all falling apart the burger was just a bun, jalapeños and 2 patties . My bf never complains about food and he was saying how bad it was . If you're here for the Hooligan Irish Stout it's neither Irish or Stout. It tastes like an IPA with a Pliny the Elder finish wrapped in a dark cloak. The service is hit and miss, order at the bar. The wedge salad should be called a BLT without bread. read more

We've given this place several chances because we really enjoy their beer, but the food has been consistently disappointing. We've tried the pizzas, chicken tenders, and loaded fries. The pizzas were just okay but left us with stomach aches, likely from how greasy they were. The chicken tenders were dry and overcooked. Today, the fries were barely warm, hard, and dry, like leftover fries that had been sitting out. There was hardly any beer cheese on them, and what was there was clumpy and hard instead of the smooth consistency beer cheese should have. When we ordered, we noticed the two people in the kitchen just chatting. No one was cooking, and our food came out within a minute of them stepping back in, makes sense now why the fries weren't fresh. Mike Hess Brewing is a personal favorite and go-to in Alpine! We met here for my grandma's birthday party on a Saturday afternoon. There was plenty of space for our party of 11. I love going to restaurants with family, not only for quality time, but also because it's fun to try everyone else's food! ;) We tried several pizzas, loaded fries, a couple of burgers, and boneless and bone-in wings. Everything was delish! And of course the beers are top-notch as well. Great service; our waitresses were very accommodating and patient with our large party. Fun fact: when this building was first constructed, I worked in the original restaurant, which was called Paparazzi. Stopped by Mike Hess after going to the pumpkin patch. I absolutely loved the ambiance here with Jonathan Ford playing music. Service was top notch and the recommendations were on point. Beers were crisp and cold. The food was delicious between the wings, pub burger with fries and the mushroom pizza with sausage. We will defiantly return the next time we are in the area. I'm gonna make this quick. This has been the best Mike Hess we have visited, the food is way better than the other locations. We always try visiting every weekend after a hike and order the hot honey pizza. Unfortunately they recently changed the pizza ingredients and it no longer is a chicken pizza with white base and roasted tomatoes. While still good it's not up to par by any means. Sadly we probably won't be stopping by much often, if they decide to bring it back then so will we. Still the rest of the food is really good and the beer as well, the old hot honey was the main reason we would visit though lol. read more

I've been here three times, and every time Katie has been awesome! I can vouch that the margarita pizza and the smash burgers are great. The seltzers, beer and cider are also really good- my favorite is the triple jam! Also, if you order the flight you get to collect a free glass cup to take home which is super chill. I think my favorite part of this place is the outdoor seating and lights it's so cozy, and there's a fountain stream too! My husband and I, and friends of ours, enjoyed a delicious lunch on the patio today after hiking in Alpine. Our server was great, though I didn't catch her name. The donut burger and Thai chicken salad were both delicious! The salad was perfectly dressed, and a great mix of flavors. I would love to re-create it at home. I thoroughly enjoyed the sangria spritzer, and I'm glad that our server shared this is readily available in the North Park location as well, as we live in South Park. My search for great food continues in this town. Still haven't found a place that knocks it out of the park. Outside was nice but service was pedestrian at best. Our server forgot a request for salt and pepper which should be on the table to start. My wife got a garden salad which was served in a metal tray. Nestled in a business park in Alpine is another Mike Hess Brewery.. but this location had food and a relaxing outdoor ambiance. I can only compare this to their North Park location. With plenty of outdoor seating and a small grass area for corn hole or to let the kids run around, this is definitely a family spot you can come to and enjoy San Diego's good weather. The kitchen is primarily Burgers, Pizza, and Salad. We got the spicy meat pizza and the guajillo honey chicken wings, with a side of regular fries. The pizza was delicious, with the right amount of spice. I'd say a 14" is good to split with 2 people. The wings were similar to a BBQ, with additional layers of spice and flavor. They were served with a home made ranch and blue cheese. The side fries were thick cut and lightly seasoned, the only miss for me was the homemade ketchup. I ended up using the ranch instead. Mike Hess Brewing took over the building that once housed Alpine Brewing. We were in Alpine and decided to stop in for lunch. While we did miss the BBQ that Alpine Brewing offered, we love Mike Hess beers and seltzers. Mike Hess is yet another place that only offers a brunch menu until 1:00PM on the weekends. WTF? Becky and I are not big on brunch and get so damn frustrated trying to order lunch before 1:00 PM. I mean I like biscuits and gravy as much as the next person, but c'mon! Until 1:00?! That's what the Broken Yolk is for. We sat at the bar and were greeted by Mike. He informed us that the daily menu would not be available for about 30 minutes. We decided to wait it out with a beer and seltzer. Well, 30 minutes turned into nearly an hour. Not a huge deal, but certainly annoying as we were getting increasingly hungry. When the daily menu was finally open for business we decided on a couple of appetizers to share. Wings and pretzel bites. Mike overheard us talking about the Citrus Chili Wings, when he walked by and casually said, "Guajillo Honey". When pressed further he told us that they were his favorite and compared them to a sort of Korean BBQ. We heeded Mike's advice and ordered them with our pretzel bites. Mike was right, the Guajillo Honey wings were delicious. Both Bex and I would have preferred a bit more heat, but the flavor was outstanding. Not the best wings, but very, very good. A nice change from buffalo. The pretzel bites were good albeit a tad on the salty side and perhaps a shade overdone. They were still tasty little nuggets. The beer cheese that was served with them saved the day. That stuff was fantastic! I could've ordered a pint glass full! Plenty of seating indoors and the patio outside is huge. There was even live music on the patio on Sunday when we were there. A girl and her guitar. Service from Mike was great. If we find ourselves in Alpine again I'm sure we'd return to Mike Hess as long as it is on or after 1:00 PM. read more

I am new to town and was very excited to learn there was a beer pub nearby. I have now tried it 6 times and am always disappointed in food and service. This place has soooo much potential and is the only place in town really to gather. Their menu is awful. They put pickled strawberries on salads and fry romaine lettuce calling it a grilled Caesar. I tried both and they are both terrible. Why not use fresh strawberries as they are in season right now and who grilles lettuce? It makes it wilty, soggy and slimmy. How is that a good idea? Pub food is not that difficult. All you need is a small menu with a few signature things. So the next time I went I tried a pizza, surely the pizza would be good? It came with burnt crusts and some sort of Mexican cheese blend in a margarita pizza. I haven't even commented in service or atmosphere yet. The windows are always streaked and dirty, tables sticky, plastic plants hanging with dust bunnies and overall ugly decor with gigantic napkin dispensers in each table like we are in the cafeteria of my high school. Which we might as well me because that is who you have to serve you, teenagers.... If they aren't gathering around socializing with one another or with employees that are off the click they are burning your food in the kitchen. I hope the owner can watch a few episodes of kitchen nightmares and visit a good pub like Firestone or Figueroa Mountain brew in Solvang. They have excellent food , atmosphere, service and brew. This can be you Hess!!! You have the market here in the county use it! Be better!!! Get a smaller menu, focus on a two signature dishes and hire real chefs! I stopped by to grab a beer or two while I went over some work and was very happy with my beverages. I ordered a triple hazy IPA served in a 12oz glass due to the high abv and it was super good. Smooth, sweet, juicy and nice and strong! My second was another nice choice (another less potent ipa) and well done! So good. I was treated well, there was plenty of seating, the product was great. A trip out to Alpine for the day to visit friends meant why not explore and see what else we can find like a brewery or something and we landed on Mike Hess. I am not a big beer person but I do actually really like the beers at Mike Hess! We came in on a week day and it wasn't too busy, it was a decent size tasting room which I was surprised by as some of the others I have been to have been much smaller. We grabbed a quick seat at the bar for a drink and I noticed that they had some other drink options other than beer which was great for me but I did venture out and try some of the beers including the peach sour and the mike-alada which were both tasty! I ended up leaving with 2 shirts and a 6 pack of beer for my boyfriend, they actually had a deal that if you bought a shirt that you got a free 6 pack which was awesome since I was going to buy both. We ended up spending a good amount of time in the merch area because we loved all of it. If I was in the area I will definitely come back, It was nice to see that they have a kitchen as well so I want to check out their food menu as well! read more

Went on a Sunday day trip to Alpine. Customer service was very friendly. I was so glad they had a grass fed burger, the Alpine burger- it was really good. Surprisingly, the beer was not that good; tasted stale maybe they should've let the tap flow a little so I can get fresh tapped beer. Beer at McIlhenny's down the street was way better. I've been to their North Park location, and the customer service there was not good at all, but the server and staff here were great and had a positive attitude. read more
