When I lived in Whittier some time ago, Whittier Farms was the place I always purchased my carne asada. It was always the best, family always enjoyed it. The store is a little old, can use a lot of updating. Prices have always been reasonable. Even when I moved to Lakewood, I continued to come here for my carne asada. This place has become a New Year's tradition for our BBQ supplies. Now 20 years later, and now living in Arizona. On my way to my family for the new years tradition, I still continue to stop off and get my asada. This place has always been great and I will always continue to come here. read more

I like the Short Ribs and the asada but I think I am done with this place. I'm tired of walking in there and not being appreciated for my business. The butchers and the cashier never greet or smile. Now I know where old produce goes to die. This place MUST get all the oldies and somewhat salvagables (yeah, i made up my own word for this). Let me put it this way, if you do not use the produce the same day, don't bother buying it. Their meat counter looked fresh and clean, but I would definitely stay clear of any prepared foods.....their cooked nopales looked spooky. The cashier was somewhat stoic..but I took home a bag of produce for $4 so i guess I shouldn't complain so much. No, I will - that's why I'm here..I reserve the right to Yelp!!!!! A good selection of fresh produce, and meat. They also have basic canned goods and dairy. Most of their inventory is everyday items for Mexican-American cooking. While the selection is a bit more limited, the prices are in line with local supermarkets. The people are friendly and the produce is fresh. Mostly, though, I like to come here because the "after work" rush is not as crazy as at the supermarkets. I can stop by after work and be in and out in 10 minutes with everything I need to cook dinner. read more

Flavorful carne Asada! It's a thicker meat slice than other places, but don't let that fool you; it's still very tasty and tender and amazing! If you go there, purchase the ranchera carne asada (this means marinated). It's currently as of 6/5/16 priced at $8.95/lb I purchased 3 lbs to trial with, and it's 4 star! 5 star would be dos toros in Huntington park but In life you have to try different meat lol. I'm going with 5 stars because the new owner and his family are so great! I came here all the time and the staff who worked were mostly rude and off putting. Not any more. They have moved things around cleaned up a bit and there isn't as much produce selection but the meat is still great and the guacamole, still the VERY best around. Vallarta has taken some business from these local meat markets so shop local, support Whittier businesses... The service is 1000x better so give them another shot if you were turned off before. read more

No more whittier farms. Had it for Dinner last week. Asada/guacamole/shrimp drove 25 minutes to get it... The vibe was off when I walked in. It was dark.lol but ignored the feeling. Carne Asada was pretty tasty. They had a lot of meat still at 5pm. They had everything you needed for a good BBQ. Corn, salsa, guacamole and tortillas. We got all of the above and everything was fresh and good. read more

Went by Whittier Farms today to purchase several types of meats for my smoker. Upon entering store I noticed minimal vegetables and products throughout store. I was really surprised when I made it to meat section. To my disappointment there was only 3 meat varieties available. Carne asada, chicken asada, and some other sort of beef. I bought a little carne asada because I was there already. That wasn't the end, upon walking out I noticed the C rating on the door from 2 weeks ago. Will never go back here. This is my spot for the BEST carne asada and chicken! It's a little hole in the wall but oh my gosh they do the best marinate on their meats. Also customer service is awesome. The female cashier is the sweetest and seems so humble and the guy weighing out the meat always helps me when I need to figure out how many pounds I need for my big family parties. Yes, I have tried the produce from here...blah blah who cares about vegetables, when this place offers you the best carne asada ever!? "King Of Carne Asada" Is as precise as it gets. Best carne asada you can buy, excellent quality meat, very tender, juicy and marinated in wholesome goodness. I probably barbecued a zillion times this summer because of this place. Its hilarious when you order it because when you ask for the "Infamous Carne Asada" the butcher creeps to the back all mysterious like it's some sort of secret attraction...well he did when I ordered anyway haha. (He was getting the fresh cut meat rather than the one in under those lamps, don't get all creeped out you can see what meat he is getting haha.) In conclusion we learned: Veggies= Good i guess. I have been struggling with finding a place to buy my carne asada since the place I use to go to in Whittier closed. I happened upon this place on my way home from work one day and my family and I really liked the carne asada and marinated chicken. King of Carne Asada? Yes please! I purchased the Carne Asada and the Pollo Asado (marinated, not cooked) from there, and I was thoroughly impressed! It was fantastic. Meat wasn't particularly fatty, and it tasted amazing once it was cooked. I will absolutely be making my carne asada purchases there again! Yes, the people who work here seem rather depressed but I find that if I start a friendly conversation they liven up! You have to choose your veggies and fruit carefully but when they have deals, they have deals! Every piece of meat I have ordered has been exceptional. The bell peppers in the bag are really inexpensive. I buy their pollo fajitas and add some more onions and peppers and my family is blessed. Their corn is great too! read more

What happened to the quality of the ranchera meat? Use to be great tender cuts and marinated to perfection. I bought 5lbs of meat yesterday at $9 a lb. Sorry to say but it was like eating beef jerky as it was so thin. What a shame, this is the only reason I'd come here. The marinated chicken was good on the BBQ grill. I never mind paying for quality and will have to look for another spot in Whittier. read more

It's a very good value compared to grocery store prices. The selection isn't always top drawer and the quality is hit and miss. If you could only buy what you need for a day or so, it'd be great as you could find the freshest values. Meat dept. is popular- have tried the various chicken selections and found them tastier than the grocery alternative. read more

I have been buying their Carne Asada and their marinated chicken for about 8 years and both are pretty good. The guacamole and salsa are excellant. Recently I started buying carne asada from the uptown whittier market on the corner of Mar Vista and Greenleaf and the difference in quality is amazing. Whittier Farms Asada ALWAYS had to be trimmed well after cooking, there was always alot fat etc. This other place in uptown sells GREAT tasting Asada for $1.00 more per pound and there is virtually NO fat. Costs more but much higher quality and you end up with more Asada. They also offer the ASADA THAT wHITTIER fARMS SELLS FOR THE SAME PRICE... BUT THE UPGRADE TO A BETTER QUALITY IS WORTH IT TO ME. Wow!! I just had the best "carne Azada" in my life. So went in to the store with my step dad this past Sunday to get some meat, guess what? we purchased 12 pounds of meat!!! that's alot, but it was worth it. and let me tell you about the Guacamole and salsas they melt in your mouth of how good they are. friendly people working there, the cashier she's always smiling and very happy, very attentive, a teenager about 15-16 years of age i would say making guacamole, I literally stayed to watch how he was making the guacamole. everyone should come to buy their meat and chicken here. not so sure about the produce though, but the meat its all worth it. thank you, read more

Whittier Farms is a little grocery store that mostly just has fresh fruit and vegetables and a meat counter. Their produce is not the greatest quality (think minor imperfections, blemishes and bruises but still tasting good) but it is always a bargain. I have walked out of this store several times with four or five bags of produce for less than $8 (I am not exaggerating). At these prices I don't even mind throwing out a few bad pieces (unlike when I spend $3 for a single peach at Whole Foods, Bristol Farms or Gelsons). They have a few small shelves of staple groceries, condiments, etc. and their big sign out front proclaims that they are "The King of Carne Asada" but I haven't tried anything from their meat market yet. Ciudad magazine also recently listed a hole-in-the-wall grocer on the corner of Whittier Blvd and Broadway as having the best Carne Asada in all of Los Angeles so maybe one of them is right. read more

Having lived in Whittier for the last three years, I have grown to appreciate this market. The produce is not Whole Foods or Gelson's quality but it is an eight of the price. I appreciate a place where I can find piloncillo and diesmillo; sadly Ralph's "Latino" section is not very accommodating. You know this place would be at least 4 stars in my book. BUT.......................................... The service brings it way down. I have been going here for some time. The carne asada is the best in Whittier for sure but its like you have to have a freaking appointment to get some help at the meat counter. Once you do get help they look at you more like they want to beat the crap out of you than help. Then they throw your meat at you and walk away. I was in there the other day, it was me and one girl in the entire store. She was ahead of me at the meat counter and there 2 guys behind the counter. The saw both of us, they did not say word, stop what they were doing, or even acknowledge us. Then the girl was getting annoyed and started to tap on the counter and they still did not say anything. 10 min have gone by and they are not helping either of us. Finally I just took off, didn't feel like dealing with these guys. The girls at the registers are not very nice either. BTW the price for the asada is way high too. read more

I like to support local businesses, but will not go back to this place. We were looking for a place to buy quality rib eye steaks for our July 4th BBG. This place was recommended so we decided to try it. Big mistake! I did not inspect the meat because it was wrapped in cellophane under the counter. I asked the butcher if it was well marbled, he assured me it was and would be great. O my, I should have looked for myself. There was no marbling at all. I marinaded for 5 hours hoping for the best ,but It was very tough-like leather. No one would eat it. We threw all in the trash. I'm sure the cut was select, not choice at $7.99 lb. read more
