Japadog was one of those places I heard about as an iconic Vancouver food. They started as a small hotdog stand in 2005 and saw success, opening more stands and then sit-in restaurants. It's a great story. This location on Robson Street is pretty unique, the architecture of the small store definitely feels like you could be in Japan. It offers some table and bar seating inside, and a couple picnic tables outside. Though it's not a bar, "dive" does seem to be an apt description. I think it could use a deep clean. Their menu has, of course, hotdogs as well as fried chicken, takoyaki, fries, and some desserts. As a first time visitor, I asked the staff for their recommendation of what was popular, and they didn't really have an answer for me and didn't seem super friendly or engaging. They also said they didn't have wifi for guests to use. I appreciate the interesting menu items. I'm not sure the flavors worked for me. It was a little mayo heavy. And the veg option was flavorless. I am curious why they cannot make any hotdog into a veggie hotdog and instead have a specific section of veg options. Overall it's certainly unique. Stopped by here for brunch and it was good. Very versatile menu and unique choices for hot dogs and Japanese street food! Very small establishment with very limited seating inside and outside. You can either order at the kiosk or with the cashier. I'd say the portions are on the smaller side but prices are decent. Got pretty crowded as it turned into lunchtime. What we ordered: -Wagyu Menchi Katsu: Okay but served oddly. It was like a huge menchi meatball in a hotdog bun so you didn't get menchi with every bite. It was also pretty heavy on the mayo which I wasn't a huge fan of. Menchi was okay. 3/5 -Japanese Curry Poutine: This was really good! Fries were amazing with the curry. Curry was flavorful but def tasted like the packaged curry. 4/5 -Aonori Fries: These were basically furikake fries and they were actually really good. Seasoning complimented the fries well. 4/5 -Chicken Karage: This was very disappointing just because I've had better before. The breading was very plain and not flavorful, just tasted fried. When traveling, we reserve an extra meal for the end of the evening...after dinner, after dessert, after the late night cocktail...I'm not sure what it's called, but in Canada it often means "vegetarian hot dog" because the nation is rich with they-hardly-ever-close hot dog places, always with a veggie dog option. That was our experience in cities in the east of Candada, and to our delight, here in Vancouver where Japadog services up a zillion different unique Japanese hot dog combinations, with a veggie dog ready to put in place, and, for heaven's sake, they're open until 3am. We were in Vancouver for 3 nights, and, sure enough, we went to Japadog 3 times. If you're there before 10pm you can sit in their small dining area. After 10 you order at the street window and there are a couple of stone bench/planter areas right in front you can park yourself. They have a separate vegetarian menu which is not fully on display in the restaurant, but IS available when you use their electronic ordering tablet (and viewable on their website.) That threw us off a little on our first visit when we knew we had seen the veggie options on the website, but it was before 10 and we were ordering from a live person who only mentioned 2 different options. (There are a lot more than 2!) No matter, over the course of our three nights we tried the Veggie Croquette (made with fried potatoes), the Veggie Oroshi, and the Veggie Terimayo (With no mayo). All looked unique and tasted good and served our late-night extra-meal stomach reserved for just such occasions. The fact that it was almost across the street from our hotel was a bonus. (Or a disaster depending on how you look at it.) Really disappointing, didn't live up to the hype. Pricey for what you get, but also just really not good. The buns were dry, the dog had a snap on the outside which was nice but it was dry on the inside, and the yakisoba tasted like corner store top ramen. I didn't finish it. Upon returning to downtown Vancouver later on a Friday night, my husband and I were looking for a quick bite to eat. We had heard so many people recommend Japadog. It was within walking distance of our hotel so we made our way over. We placed our order at the window for two Japadogs to-go. My husband ordered the Wagyu hotdog with seaweed and mayo while I opted for the "Love Meat", which was essentially a chili cheese dog. We took our hotdogs back to our hotel to enjoy them since it was a cold and rainy night, and there was only outdoor seating available. I have to say, I do not understand what all the hype is about these hotdogs. Perhaps this is the sort of place you need to come after having a few drinks to soak up the alcohol in your stomach, but they were simply unremarkable. And to make matters worse, the hotdogs themselves were smaller than the buns they were in so the ratio of bread to hot dog was off and they were cold. Yes, we did walk back to our hotel with them, but it was a short three block walk. The temperature was extremely offputting. While in Vancouver we got to finally try the famous Japadog! We had heard a lot about this spot and were excited to try it, albeit a bit hesitant on the concept and fusion of flavors. Everything we tried was fine but it wouldn't be something we'd run back to have again. Mostly because we don't think the bold flavors and combinations pair well together but that doesn't mean they weren't tasty enough to finish. We tried the 2 most ordered items first and ended up going with a safe option (bacon cheesy) at the end to bring our experience up a bit. All in all, I think this was just one of those situations where not everything is for everyone and Japadog wasn't really for us. If you're a fan of trying new things and want to taste the essence of Japanese food in hotdogs, this place may very well be for you. Wasn't too busy when I went (also raining), and took about 10 minutes to get ready. Tonkatsu Japadog: Plenty of sauce, bun was toasted well and crispy. The Takoyaki was okay, but I'm not really a huge fan of Takoyaki to being with because it's always a soggy mess. This was no different. The Kurobuta Terimayo had way too much mayo on it. If it wasn't for that, it could have been pretty good because the hot dog itself had a nice snap and flavor to it. The beef hot dog was just mid. The 'spicy sauce' it came with was more like a hot relish than it was a sauce, and there was SO much of it. Some if it accidentally fell off onto the table, which made it slightly better but not by much. Maybe we just didn't order the right items but I don't think I would try it again. Japadog is an institution at this point, but from my first time ever having it over a decade ago to now, I can't figure out for the life of me why it is so popular. The food is dramatically overpriced for what it is--a below-average sized hot dog, when you could get one for $1.50 at Costco (I know it's a loss leader) or a huge one for under $4 at a host of other restaurants. We went to Japadog since we were reading online how it is a must try if you are visiting in the area and also how they have a wagyu hot dog which I'm a huge fan of. The place is pretty small so it is easy to overlook but was decently busy for an afternoon. We got their wagyu hot dog which is one of their more popular ones, it took them some time to make our order but once it was ready it was well worth the wait. This was a Japanese-American fusion and the flavors here were so complex but worked together so well. I wasn't quite sure what I was eating when it came to the sauce but my stomach just told me to keep chewing so that's really all that matters. I can speak on the sausage itself and say that it was really juicy and packed full of flavor on its own which is what you would expect from a wagyu. The bun also is really soft and fluffy which is an important hallmark of a delicious hotdog. At first I was a little bummed that I wouldn't be able to have this again for a long time since I was visiting from California but I found out they also have one more location in Santa Monica which got me really excited. I see a lot of Japadog in my future! Would definitely recommend this place especially as a late night stop since they stay open for a while. read more

Located inside the Wellington Market at the Well, this is the first east coast location (that I know of). Originally, japadog started off as a stand but then gained enough popularity to open an actual storefront in Vancouver. It was exciting to see a lot of choices for this established west coast staple. Of course I had to try the OG Teri Mayo. This version was a spicy sausage with cheese. It was delish! The spice had some serious kick! Be warned, this place seems to have a very consistent line due to its popularity. 20 minutes is a good estimate for how long we waited. Finally tried the famous Japadog and it was just ok. I've had Asian style burgers that I have been impressed by so I was hoping the Asian style hot dog would be great as well, but it's more lackluster and kind of overpriced for what you are getting. I went with the Wagyu Terimayo which is Wagyu Beef, Seaweed, Teriyaki Sauce, Japanese Mayo, Fried Onions which is almost 15 CAD. It looked pretty good when it came out, but I did think it was a little small. Overall flavor was ok, I wouldn't know it was wagyu if you didn't tell me. Lots of sweetness coming from the teriyaki & Japanese mayo. I think they had sriracha which I should have added, but overall there was already so much sauce. The Japadog name is quite well known, so with it being a tourist draw, comes the higher prices. In the end, it really is just a hot dog and if 15 CAD was for a meal which included fries I could justify the price. This location was downtown and I walked there but if you drive you'd have to find street parking or look for a structure nearby. It's a pretty small spot since it's just a quick-bite meal. If you love hot dogs I suppose you could try it out and if someone offered me a Japadog I'd eat it. But I don't really plan on coming back. Cheers! read more
