Very pretty garden with walking trails. There is an onsite shop for drinks, paletas and souvenirs. There's a large structure to sit in the shade and appreciate the view. Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area.

The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio is a hidden gem in the city. The garden is located in Brackenridge Park next to the zoo. It's a beautifully maintained Japanese garden with beautiful Koi ponds, Asian inspired structures and even a waterfall all surrounded by beautiful vegetation and flowers. The Japanese Teagarden is a great photo spot, but also a great place to visit with out of town guests or just to see the changes that occur with each season. There are lots of steps so it's not ideal for those with mobility issues although it can be accessed for an aerial view because there is a ramp leading to the entrance.

Parking is limited here, so if you come in the middle of the day, just know it might take a minute. Also, there are some shaded areas, but not much, so I'd definitely recommend going on a mild weather day instead of when it's really hot. But once you're in... I was honestly struck by how beautiful it is. The stone, the flowers, the water, the koi fish... everything just flows together in a way that feels really calm and intentional. It's such a peaceful, tranquil little spot in the middle of the city. The kind of place where you can slow down without even trying. I also love that it's free. There's a small coffee shop on-site, so you can grab a drink and just sit, take it all in, and enjoy the moment. Calm. Peaceful. Serene.

This is one of the first places I was able to visit when I first moved here. It was also my first date with the love of my life. This place is very unique and special to San Antonio. I am obsessed with the scenery and the calm it brings as you walk along day or night. The mini waterfall that trickles down into the koi pond. What a great place to check out if you haven't!

This remarkable piece of history is so peaceful and beautiful. You can had wedding ceremonies, professional photos for graduations, family portraits, etc., here. There is a beautiful waterfall, and many beautiful flowers located all around. This is a must visit place for outdoor beauty! There is a small convenience shop, and even a restaurant located inside.

If you know me, you know I'm all about peace, plants, and good energy -- and this spot delivered all three. The Japanese Tea Garden is straight-up zen. From the moment we walked in, everything just felt calm. The koi fish were beautiful -- vibrant, smooth, just gliding through the water like they don't have a single worry in the world. I could've stood there watching them for a minute. Dany and I took a slow stroll through the paths, crossed the stone bridges, and just enjoyed being present. The waterfalls, the greenery, the layout -- it's the kind of place that forces you to slow down in the best way. It's clean, well-kept, and perfect for a date, solo reset, or even just a quick mental break from the city. 10/10. Definitely recommend visiting if you're in the area. Peaceful vibes all around.

Visited the Japanese Tea Garden and it was incredibly serene. Walking through the garden felt calm and peaceful, a small getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The waterfall was a highlight and added to the relaxing atmosphere. There were also plenty of koi fish swimming around, which made it easy to stop and just watch for a while. The paths, greenery, and water features are beautifully maintained and thoughtfully laid out. Highly recommend.

Ordinarily a Yelp review covers the team members and maybe the history of a place. This review has neither. It was in the high 30's and windy. Not a great day to be outside, but as one of the other 3 people I crossed paths with said, it really is just lovely. I came here to see the fishes do as fishes do. And hear the water fall. This garden is perfect for both. Come and enjoy the serenity. It really is a lovely refuge from the hustle of the city. Oh, and they have a protected kitty colony. Which is really a great way to help ensure the colony is not overrun with illness or disease.

Tranquil place with fish in the water, lots of rocks between the walkways and the water, a nice waterfall, flowers throughout, several levels, a small restaurant, an overlook, and several levels. It is free. Parking can be tight. Not quite like being truly in Japan - but a very good job taking a quarry and making it something good. Can go up and down several flights of stairs - or just do one and see much of it.

Tranquil in every way. I was so appreciative that everyone who was at the tea garden the day we went understood the assignment, because coming here was a wonderful break from the busyness of the day. Situated right next to San Antonio Zoo, the Japanese Tea Garden is a little slice of peace and nature. Beautiful walkways, a lovely restaurant for some delicious bites to eat (with GF options), and views for days. The garden is beautifully maintained - you can tell much thought and care goes into each plant, path, and pond. I loved seeing the Koi, and the waterfall was a perfect misting on a hot day. Cap it all off with some boba and maybe some dumpling or ahi tuna, and it is a lovely break from the grind and a perfect place for some yoga, meditation, and tranquility.

These gardens were beautiful even in the dead of winter. We came during the coldest time of year, so there were icicles and not much plant life, but we still had a great time and enjoyed the serene ambience. We had the whole place to ourselves, presumably because of the weather. Everything was so cutely designed. It was so fun walking around the waterfalls and on the little bridges. The pond had some giant koi huddled together. There is no fee to enter, which is nice.

This is a beautiful, spacious, and picturesque garden. It has several paths through it, including an inner and outer loop, upper and lower loop, and a few bridges. Plenty of nice angles and backdrops for photographs. The far end contains a small waterfall. The parking lot immediately at the entrance is quite small; you'll have better luck in the larger one. There is also a side/back gate. Taking that and going down the path will lead you to the zoo. Definitely check it out!

Beautiful garden that's free to go in with a waterfall, koi fish and turtles. Some stairs so a bit difficult to go with a stroller/wheelchair but doable! Recommended!

Ask the Community - Japanese Tea Garden

It says Private Parking Lot does that mean there is a payment required to park.?

    There's no payment to park.

Can we still come in after 5pm since it is summer?

No, they were serious about getting everyone out when we were there this summer once it hit closing.

Is there any place we can sit here and picnic?

I don't think there are. The garden is basically a nice place to walk around, but there are no open patched areas for picnic. They do have a cafe next to the pavilion near the entrance for you to sit and eat, but probably not for picnics.

Should I go here or the botanical gardens?

This place is free, botanical gardens aren't, but you get what you pay for.

    Are dogs allowed?

Yes, as long as they are on a leash

Do you need a reservation right now due to covid?

No reservations needed normally. Sometimes they have specials events and they will block off a part of the garden. Call ahead just in case to be safe.

    Where is parking located?

There will be parking all around the garden below the hill. There is also limited parking directly in front of the garden as well.

Hi! I saw this place as a beautiful place to take my boyfriend. But is this a picnic type area? Is there any free grass where one could sit or relax on? I didn't see many open spaces in pictures.

There are some places where you can have a picnic but there is not a ton of green grassy area.

    Is it dog friendly?

Yes, it is pet friendly. Unfortunately, they have signs asking patrons not to abandon there pets. I saw multiple stay cats which is quite sad. I don't understand why people abandon there pets.

    Is it wheelchair accessible?

It is somewhat accessible. A wheelchair is able to get up to the pavilion from the parking lot. From the pavilion, you can overlook the garden but the only way to get down to the water & bridges are a large stone staircase.

This sounds like a beautiful place. Were their many birds?

I'm sure there were birds, but the gardens occupy such a large and open space, and while the gardens weren't crowded with people, there were many people gathered at "prime photo spots," so birds wouldn't have settled around those areas. Beautiful… Read more
