The barista put the milk under the steam wand, then did a few other chores while the milk steamed (and boiled), then left me waiting a few more minutes while she talked to another employee. I don't know how anyone could refer to the staff as mean or nasty. I go here pretty much every day (I live 1/2 block away) and they are efficient, friendly, and make great drinks. For a coffee place, it is top notch. When they see me, they get me my regular order without my having to say anything. With less regular customers they are patient to a fault (I wouldn't have to wait in line if everyone was as regular a customer as I am since they'd see everyone and make their drinks with no talking necessary). All in all a nice family run alternative to Starbucks. read more

coffee usually tastes burnt, one time I ordered what I thought was similar to a Mocha Frappucino, but all they did was throw some chocolate ice cream into a blender with a shot of espresso and blend it up... it was gross. No milk or anything. read more

The service here was awful. I went I order two breakfast sandwiches to go, and the woman at the counter tried to charge me for three sandwiches. After that was corrected, I waited more than 15 minutes for the sandwiches (nothing complicated: a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel, and a tomato, egg and cheese on wheat toast). When I asked about the progress of my order, I was told that the sandwiches had been ready and that they had called out the order. Now, I was sitting not more than 10 feet from the counter and never heard them call anything. The woman then said that she called out but I was on my phone. In reality I was not on my phone, but regardless, even if I had been she should have realized that I didn't hear her and announce the order again. The restaurant was not busy, so there's really I excuse for this laziness. Finally, the sandwiches were both made incorrectly: the bacon was on the wrong sandwich and both had tomato even though I only ordered one sandwich with tomato. Bottom line: the indoor service is absolutely atrocious. Moreover, make sure you check your order before leaving, because they clearly have difficulty following simple instructions. I can't comment on the outdoor seating experience, but I won't be going back here. read more

I moved into the immediate neighborhood near Java house and started going here for my coffee and bagel runs. Though its not my favorite ambiance, Java house is consistent with their food and coffee/espresso drinks. Their prices are very reasonable as well. I do really like their coffee and there bagel sandwiches with egg and cheese is one of the best in the neighborhood. I like their coffee and mocha lattes a lot as well. This seems to be a very "locals only" place since I don't think too many from out of the neighborhood come here for breakfast or coffee. I like doing work at Java house as well though the wifi can be shotty at times. Though, I think my liking for this place is mostly born out of the fact that it is so close in proximity to me. I want to love this place. It's my neighborhood non-Starbucks coffee shop and yet they always fall a bit short in my estimation. The coffee has gotten better recently (which is exciting) but I really don't know why it's always so busy. Pretty average coffee shop with a bunch of treats. They have some parfaits some mornings and fresh juice. I'm a cappucino guy and the one I had here was alright - I could've used a bit of a crisper flavor and hint less of bitterness. Fairly quick service and tasty espresso. My primary complaint is that I tried to place my order ahead of time via the EatStreet app because I was going to be there during what I expected would be a busy hour, however, the app had them listed as closed. I was already headed in that direction, though, so I continued on my route and (obviously) found them to be open. The service is very poor and the staff is very rude. I have been twice and both times my order has been messed up. The staff rolls their eyes at you and is not friendly. I had a coupon the second time which no staff members knew how to process. The bacon egg and cheeses are fine though. read more

Whether you are nursing a hangover, looking for a spot to read a book, or trying to catch up on work. Java House is a really great place to spend a sunny Saturday morning. They have a wonderful patio that has numerous outlets, and table service (so you don't have to leave your computer just to get another cup of coffee). The food is not fantastic, but if you are looking for a bagel and some fruit it will do the job. The cool thing is that they roast their own coffee, so the beans are fresh making their coffee is pretty tasty. The complaints about the slow service are true, but in my experience, they usually work hard to get your initial order out to you and then drift off after that - you biggest struggle will likely be when you want to pay your bill. read more

From my experience of coming to Javahouse about 20 times by now, service has been fine. The food is pretty good and the coffee is decent. Overall, I am a fan of Javahouse and it was surprising to read how many people don't care for this place at all. I often meet clients or friends here and it's pretty quiet, which is always helpful when you're trying to listen to someone. read more

Recently discovered Java House while looking for an Independent coffee shop in downtown DC that was actually open on Sundays. Overall, the assessments of others seem to be my experience: good coffee, tasty food (try the croissant sandwiches!), and a nice atmosphere for working/studying/chatting/people-watching -- combined with marginal service. I've not been rushed out the door, but you do need to budget time for the service. A good place to spend a Sunday - either working or lazing about... I do wish the coffee was Fair Trade (and the food locally sourced?), but they do better than many others manage on the sustainability front. Worth checking out! read more

If you don't like coffee, don't come here. Since they roast on the premises the place reeks of beans. Even if you come in for tea or a pastry you will leave smelling like a barista. The service is meh the women behind the counter have never been too nice even with me smiling and asking how their day is (I've come here about 5 times, same story ). The reason I come back is because their food is pretty good and for a good price. They give you a cup of fruit to go along with your Panini which I think is a nice touch. Today though I think I encountered the owner and when he saw the line was building up he got off his laptop and started helping taking orders and checking people out. I've never had better coffee than the stuff Java House brews. They roast their own beans, which is a great thing to walk in on (and take home with you). Their muffins are also delicious, especially the chocolate chip, and the other food is pretty good. I wouldn't recommend the espresso drinks, but the coffee is my favorite. read more

I have been going to Java House almost every morning lately for a coffee (iced since it's the summer). For starters, it's like a block from my office - convenient much? But more importantly go there for the quality of the coffee (they roast it there!) and the awesome staff (many of them seem to recognize me - don't know if that's a good or bad thing, haha). It also had free wireless and a great patio, so it's an awesome place to go with your friends or just to read or work. LOVE Java House. read more

The place is decent. The staff is okay too but the owner of the place is EXTREMELY rude. My husband and I went to Java house for a nice coffee date. We used our credit card while purchasing but it didn't go through so we paid cash. We looked at our bank statement and saw that Java House had charged us for the coffee. We talked to the owner right then and he said it shouldn't appear after it processes. We went home and found out that they did in fact charge our credit card. We called the coffee shop and talked to the employee who served us coffee that day and she mentioned that we could come in and get our refund. I went to get my refund and the owner yelled at me and told me he can't give refunds to random people off the street. I asked him if I could speak to his employee who was there that day and he asked me to find the employee myself. I cried and left the coffee shop. I have never been so humiliated in my life. He didn't apologize or anything. I am never going here for anything ever again. If I could give this coffee shop a 0 star, I would. Only giving 1 for the wonderful staff who are willing to help. read more

I had a bit of time to think about this review as I stood in line to order an iced coffee and a bagel, watching a fruit fly lumber across one of the muffins in their display case. I had been coming to this place several times a week for almost a year, and each time, the internal monologue weighing the pros and cons of returning echoed louder. The cons have gained weight. The service, as you may have picked up from the other reviews, is awful. Servers take ages to notice you at a table. Customers are treated with a brusqueness (by servers, and especially cashiers) that almost prompts you to apologize for being there as you place your order. I would actually enjoy the latter if it were directed at the hordes of wi-fi squatters - but the air of disdain for the customers is sprayed liberally and without discretion about the whole place. Should you sit down, and there are more than three occupied tables, expect to wait fifteen to twenty minutes for a simple order. Most importantly, however, is everyone's chronic inability to accurately receive and reproduce your order. I am a simple man, of simple needs - never ordering more than a coffee and a bagel with cream cheese, sometimes with bacon (if I'm feeling spicy). I would estimate over half the time I have ordered these things, I have had to send the bagel back because it was missing either the cream cheese or the bacon. Sometimes the staff is polite about this. Many times, they are not. More frustrating than the inaccuracy is how sloppily it's all produced. There is no consistency order-to-order. The freshness of the food varies profoundly. Sometimes that bagel is going to be fluffy and delicious, and sometimes it's going to crumble like the dead soil of Dust Bowl Oklahoma. Tom Joad would have passed on these bagels. In Java House's defense, it is quite nice to sit on their outside patio early in the morning and enjoy a cup of coffee, and that coffee isn't bad. But the food, and the service, is. I want to like this place; I have really tried. I love the 17th street corridor, and would much rather have it populated by small, charismatic businesses. It is time, however, for this coffee shop to change, fundamentally. They have lost a regular customer. If you're looking for coffee, there are myriad alternatives in the area. If you're looking for a bagel, head over to Bagels Etc. on P st. or even Bethesda Bagels on Conn. Ave. This place doesn't deserve the customers it gets. read more
