Boonton, NJ - I always enjoy Java Smugglers whenever I'm in Boonton, located near the quieter, western end of Main St. Great brews made from beans cultivated in volcanic soil, nice staff and proprietor (Alex, who's often there behind the counter), exquisite atmosphere with attractive Victoriana decor and paintings, tarot and tea leaf readings. Adorable spot on man street. Nicely tucked away from all the busier establishments. Upon entry you feel like you've stepped into a bookish relatives home. All the seating seems to be vintage lounge furniture and tons of pirate ship like details. Even the china and cups are all different with a fanciful flare. Dirty chai (5/5) really nice and smooth not too sweet or spiced Pistachio special (2/5) I didn't try it but the feedback was it tasted kind of plain like warm milk The pastry was (6/5) just made and SO GOOD indulgent worthy They offer a bunch of different types of iced, hot and non caffeinated drinks. There are alot of issues I have with this coffee shop which is the reason I stopped going there for quite some time. They usually play jazz music which is great to relax to but their furniture needs a huge upgrade for starters. The stools are very creaky. A couple of the couches are also not very comfortable to sit on for extended periods of time. They don't have many outlets to plug your electronics into. The bathroom is reallllly small. Its basically a closet. Lastly they dont have central air so Its difficult to get comfortable during the hot summer. I also dont think the owner likes me too much. I think he thought i was hitting on his girlfriend. The hours are great though. They're open 7am to 7pm everyday which no other coffee shop can match. Update: Now you see from the response Alex posted what a shmo this guy is claiming I was there 122 times. If anyone can tell me why someone would visit this place that frequently, id love to know. The Salvation Army probably has better furniture. Alex's ego is so big yet he runs a shop that one or two people pop in at most on any given day. Don't like people? Don't serve the public. For every person that doesn't like me, I bet there's 100 that despise you. read more

Stumbled in here last weekend while I was in search of a coffee shop near me - thanks Yelp! The vibe was so cute - lots of antique furniture and decor. Perfect place to go with your laptop or a book as it wasn't too loud. I had the pistachio latte which was probably the best I've ever had. I literally gulped it down and almost asked for another one to go. The food / pastries selection wasn't too extensive but I did enjoy the blueberry cheesecake danish. read more

Unfortunately, awful. It would seem so simple to make a good cup if you follow a basic 5 step process, and this place had very good reviews. But dishwater and a splash of milk is how I would describe it. Hazelnut Latte. A watered down mess that had no flavor and very little coffee. No caffeine hit at all. And I'm caffeine sensitive. Why ? Absolutely undrinkable, threw it out in the street barrel. Never had a coffee so badly done. Until we walked down the street to Boonton Coffee, and it was just as bad. Shocking mess of people who have no idea how to use the equipment. Unacceptable for nearly $10. a cup, don't you think ? read more

Met with a few local moms one morning for my first Java Smugglers experience and loved everything about it. Who knew we had such a gem in town? The cube was great. Casual with a sprinkling of fancy. We were in NJ to see family and wanted to visit the local, non-chain coffee shops. What a unique and funky vibe! Walking in, we couldn't help but smile at the bookcase wallpaper, chandeliers, candles, ships wheel, guitar, tic tac toe board, and more fun decor. Continuing with the unique theme, I ordered the peanut butter latte. It's as it sounds: a latte blended with peanut butter! I'm curious what PB they used - it tasted like the sugary peanut butters of my childhood (think Skippy or Jiffy). I enjoyed the drink and the childhood memories. I'm glad I tried it. Came here for my wife to get caffeinated after hiking and it was definitely worth the trip thanks to IG. Food: my wife got a lovely pistachio coffee and we ended up splitting an apple crumb cake which was amazing. I love the tea decanters on the display and next time I come I plan on getting some. Aesthetic: if there is any coffee shop you come for in NJ for the mood, this is it. I definitely appreciated all the detail and beautiful, eccentric display. Terrible coffee. One barista, all alone, who stated she was "struggling." My group got pistachio lattes and an iced bourbon mocha latte. All the drinks were uniformly terrible. None of them tasted like the flavor they were supposed to be, they were all incredibly watery, as if the lattes we were given were just weak iced coffees (we specified lattes and specific milks). Didn't bother to tell the struggling barista to fix them, as we didn't think she actually could. read more

New gem in town for coffee aficionados! Heard it opened just this February. I stopped by this Saturday morning. Street parking was easy. They have a good mix of sofas and high chairs inside. This cafe exudes cozy and classy vibes without being stuffy because they are super friendly. Inside is like an antique Victorian feel. Very cute for a date, quiet place to study, or spend time with friends. There is a bookcase wall, indoor string lights adorning the walls, and a visual fireplace. I first tried a warm bourbon coffee which was interesting! This flavor lives up to its name with the strong bourbon aftertaste. I also got a pistachio latte to go. Stumbled upon this place while walking down Main Street and wow, what a great find! The interior is cozy with an antique-y (new word alert) vibe. There's even games you can play, and we enjoyed a round of checkers with our drinks. We opted for a couple of their specials - the ruby spritzer and an iced blueberry lavender matcha. The spritzer was super refreshing and was the perfect pick-me-up sans caffeine. The blueberry lavender was prominently matcha, with subtle hints of blueberry and lavender. ZERO STARS!!! Went here just on a whim. It's a cozy spot but that is where it ends. The customer service is absolutely horrible. The owner needs to go to customer service school or this place will be closed very soon. The owner should not be in business if he continues treat customers as if he is doing them a favor.The coffees and lattes purchased were watered down and tasted nothing like it was supposed to. Then when they were returned, we were met with complete attitude and (silent) vulgarity. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!!! Save your time and money. Coffee shops are a dime a dozen. Alex is one of the owners and has successfully suggested two new drinks to me. I usually just get coffee with half and half. Was in town visiting and had to find a great local coffee shop that wasnt dunkin or starbucks. This placed was awesome! Great setup love the vibe there. Staff was super helpful and knowledgeable. Bought a large bag of delicious bourbon barrel aged coffee after trying the iced coffee version. Highly recommend it! We all enjoyed our diff coffees and will def return there next time! read more

I really love this addition to Boonton. They have a great vibe and delicious drinks. As a heads up, their fall special the apple caramel Chai latte has coffee in it....which came a surprise to me. I have typically seen a Chai with coffee in it labeled a "dirty chai." Ended up not drinking it, just wasn't what I was looking for at all. Whoops. That said, any other drink I have had there was delicious and honestly a Chai with apple and caramel flavor seems like it would be great without the coffee. read more
