A no frills luncheonette that knows what they do best & they do it consistently. I'm not a Denville local, but anytime I am in the area & think to pass by Carver's to grab a bite to eat there is almost always a line out the door! In a time when there are so many options for food, any place that people will willingly wait in line for has to be great. I managed to finally arrive at a time that had only a small wait & once inside it was smaller than I imagined - but that's not a bad thing. Limited tables means the servers can spend more time at each table rather than running around tending to too many tables at once. There were a few booths & a few more tables, closely spaced together with different parties. The decor is similar to what you'd find on an old country kitchen with witty sayings. Again, no frills. They're not looking to distract their patrons with aesthetics. Their menu was healthy & had lots to choose from. I went with my old reliable - taylor ham & cheese on a roll & it did not disappoint. They did not skimp on the meat & the cheese was melted well. ALL of their bread is homemade & delicious. This week's special was cornbread & sun-dried tomatoes, we got a side of that & it was very good. If I could rate this one a decimal scale, it would be 3.5. The food is great and good value. However, my GF and I got the short end of the stick. We came in and ordered our food in a timely manner. The table that came in after got there food. Ok it happens. But the table that checked in when we got sat down got their food before us(25 mins after). Ok this is getting ridiculous. No one asked us after we ordered if we were ok or our food will be out soon. The table that came in after use ate there food, paid there check, and left before we got our food. We didnt get anything crazy, our 2 plates and a french toast to share. When the food came out 25 minutes, the lady drop the food as soon as she could and left without asking anythjng. No one checked on us during our wait but were chatting with the regulars(sure i understand being conversational with regulars but basically pretended like we didnt existed). We finally got our food and it was great but the service really turned us off. We probably wont return but they have great food and great value. The gravy was delicious just wish they gave little more . The grits needed some salt/pepper and I also wished they served with butter . Came here Saturday early afternoon. A friend suggested this spot and after checking this spot via Yelp, I was looking forward to eat here. There was a wait which took about 30 minutes before being seated. The place is not huge but comfortable seatings. Ended up getting the traditional egg and meat breakfast special (2 eggs, seasoned home fries, homemade toast and bacon) with coffee. The whole meal was solid. Server always filled up my coffee cup. Hearty amount of pork roll, egg, and cheese and an amazing chipotle spread to go along with it. Bread is fresh cooked which is noticeably an emphasis with the sandwich. Big disappointment on this visit. I ordered the Florentine omelette which came with potatoes. I waited quite a while for it to come out and when I Spinach and it was not drained, so there was a lot of water inside the omelette, and the potatoes were overdone and hard they were dark brown. The server apologized. She said that they were out of the potatoes and they deep fried them. I waited a long time for the order to get remade. It came ok the bread this time was not buttered It took so long that I had to leave for work. I had no time to sit there and eat it so I had to bring it home and again didn't have time to eat it so I had to throw it out. They have good sized portions and huge French toast! My favorite part is they offer a variety of homemade breads for toast and they have a weekly featured bread with different flavors. But this morning, she made this place glow with the warms of simple human kindness. The hummingbird with the coffee pot. The queen bee of this hidden community for local breakfast types. I was reading about Florence Nightingale's incredible life while I overheard her chatting with each and every customer. Lady with lamp I thought - always in motion, always helping, invaluable, appreciated. Breezily looking forward to a family trip to Europe, she engaged patron after patron quickly and perfectly. Moving table to cup, pollinating with a shot of hot or something else. You could here talking about her move to Georgia with excited optimism, all the while flawlessly tending to others, brightening their morning and when some bemoaned her leaving, she would just casually say she was easily replaced. "Everyone's replaceable." Her talent, her knack was this effortless seamless weaving of tidbit mentions of her life while eliciting others' mentions of theirs all the while she nailed her duties with grace in motion. No one told her; no one needed to say how she wasn't replaceable: we all know there are those we can't replace - like Lisa. I look forward to a cup of coffee made with freshly-ground beans and my "kitchen sink" omelettes made from whatever leftovers or produce are in the refrigerator but, with my kitchen out of commission due to an ongoing renovation project, I decided to trek into Denville for breakfast at Carver's (formerly known as Doc's Kitchen). Located on 1st Avenue between Broadway and Diamond Spring Road in downtown Denville, Carver's offers plenty of tasty and innovative breakfast and lunch options served by friendly, energetic staff in a casual, open ambiance. Carver's is very popular for weekend breakfasts but they don't take reservations and seating is limited, so make sure to get there early or be prepared to stand in line. The menu includes plenty of options that will accommodate any dietary preferences or restrictions.. including a variety of breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, and french toast. I had the Pork Hash special ($11), freshly prepared and served with two eggs, crispy home fries, and rye toast. Yum! Very tasty and very filling. My dining companion opted for something simple on our most recent visit -- two eggs ($6) served with oven roasted vegetables and wheat toast. There is plenty of free on-street parking on 1st Avenue in front of the restaurant as well as in the municipal parking lot located across the street. We will definitely be back! PRO TIP: The Denville Farmers' Market, which features artisan vendors and local farms, is open every Sunday at the Bloomfield Avenue parking lot, just two blocks from Carver's. read more

Located in the heart of downtown Denville, Carvers is a great spot for breakfast that you can find it on 1st Street between Diamond Spring Road and Broadway. My visit to Carver's was on a Saturday morning around 9:30. I'm guessing my timing was perfect in that there was one other party in front of us with a wait of about 10-15 minutes. After we arrived, the crowds picked up as there were more people waiting to get in. While lines are often annoying, usually when it comes to waiting for food, it is a good sign the food is going to be great so you overlook the lines. Whenever I'm going out for breakfast, one of my key criterias is how quick I get my cop of coffee and Carvers gets an A +. The menu had many options making it difficult to choose. I picked the Chorizo Portuguese Sausage & Eggs (diced chorizo scrambled together with eggs and served with seasoned home fries and choice of homemade toast.) Also served was the French toast and Bacon. Meals were served hot and fresh and there was more than enough food to keep us powered though the day. Our coffee was topped off during out meal which always brings a high score in my book. A huge thanks to the entire staff who's teamwork made for a great meal and all those who mentioned Carver's. For those who keep putting off this visit, you are missing out and need to pay them that long overdue visit. read more

A tiny but great breakfast & lunch spot in downtown Denville. Went for breakfast with family and overall had a great breakfast for lunch experience. The wait was around 25 minutes, but the seating is very limited. Hence it can take a while to be seated during busy mornings. The decor is homey and more old-fashioned which I like. I appreciated the "no wifi. Talk to each other" sign near the bread case. It's safe to say some people didn't bother - cellular data exists, after all. Our waitress was very kind and attentive throughout the meal, and the servers are a chill group. They seem happy to be working there which is a huge plus. I got the hearty breakfast D multigrain pancakes, scrambled eggs, and turkey sausage. After being presented with two platefuls of food, I happily ate everything in front of me. The pancakes are fresh and most definitely unique. I haven't seen places serving multigrain pancakes with whole seeds and almonds, but it added a more variated texture. Some people may not like this, but I did, for it proved that Carver's isn't BS'ing the food it serves. It's also a healthy option if you can deal with the carbs. The scrambled eggs were nothing special but nonetheless tasted good. The turkey sausage was a good complement to the eggs and was lean without being dry as a tire. The sausage tasted like it was made fresh that morning, and I think the bread and pastries are made fresh, as well. The home fries tasted amazing and were perfectly cooked. There was crisp but it wasn't like hash browns, and the seasoning was spot-on. The special kielbasa omelette was throughly enjoyed although, unlike yours truly, he couldn't finish his plate, which is a testament to the grand portions being served here. You will walk out full, and potentially with another meal to have in the form of leftovers. Carver's is a pretty underrated spot in town, but it's reasonably priced for big portions and freshly-made food that far surpasses most breakfast and lunch spots. You can tell that a lot of work is being put into making the food taste great. I'll likely try out the French toast when I come back. read more

Was passing through this pocket of New Jersey when we decided to stop for breakfast. Although there were a couple other highly-rated diners in the area, Carver's had the most reviews of the bunch. There is plenty of street parking as well as a public parking lot across the street available. The space is pretty cozy and even on a weekday morning, we had to wait a couple of minutes for a table for two. We ordered the Traditional Breakfast Special ($8) which comes with two eggs of your choice, hash, homemade toast, and a breakfast meat of your choice in addition to the Florentine Omelet ($10) which comes with homemade toast and hash. The food was pretty good and I especially enjoyed their house-made multigrain toast. There was something special about the taste, maybe it was caraway seeds but I'd highly recommend it. You can also tell Carver's uses fresh ingredients; the spinach in my omelet was very high in oxalates and left an intensely gritty and chalky taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. I can't fault them for using fresh spinach instead of frozen, but blanching the spinach before using them would have made a huge improvement. read more
