I have been buying bike supplies from this shop for sometime. I recently sold my Mtb bike and was in the market for a new bike and was looking at their Trek Mtb bike. I also went to the store to ask for any extra Mtb boxes that they were disposing of. I went there and saw Dave at the parking lot heading towards the trash to throw away a bike box and I asked him If I can have a bike box they were not using. He was about to give me the one he had but it was filthy, The box was for a beach bike cruiser, I asked him will this box fit a Mountain bike, he replied "come inside, I have somthing better". While waiting to go in, I saw his assistant throw away about 4 Trek mountain bike boxes in the garbage disposal. Dave then came out with a Trek box and said this is better it has everything in it for packing bikes, he then told me, "that will be $10", I thought that was pretty shady charging for a bike box that they were going to throw away, that they got from Trek for free. He may have earned $10 that day, but he lost a customer for life. I looked at the boxes they threw by the disposal and they were exactly the same with the same packaging inside. I would never buy from this shop again. read more

honestly, I did kinda agree with reviewer Alan J.... On the first couple of trips to Jax while I was searching for a bike, the people here treat you like you're invisible. I mean, unless you have a brood of kids with you..oh wait, i DID have a kid with me a few times and they still kept looking at me like I was a kid in a glass shop that was more than likely going to break one of their precious, precious bikes. When you ask em a question, they're short with you and act like they're busy. Its weird. it looks like a fun store and they have bikes out front like they really want people to buy one, but then the people treat you like you walked into their personal garage and are looking at THEIR personal bikes that you cant own. I dont want to play the race card but well, I kinda felt that bias against me here. HOWEVER, I did eventually buy a bike at sportsauthority.com and it came unassembled in a box. Im an idiot and dont want to get my hands dirty, so i gave Jax another shot. WHOA....What a difference... The girl on the phone was very nice, just told me to bring the bike on down and they'll help me out. When I got in and told them I called earlier and wanted my bike to be assembled, they were actually FRIENDLY! and very accomodating. They started testing the tires and looked at the chain and played with the gears...like that progressive commercial where the girl rings the bell and a bunch of employees come out of nowhere to assess the damages and fix the car of a guy who got into an accident. The mechanic even suggested comprehensible services I should get for my bike, like tire sealant that helps keep your tires from going flat. They had another guy ring me up and said i didnt have to pay til i got it back but i paid anyway and left my number... and it was all service with a smile and so forth. They called and left messages when my bike was done. It was like the great service you get when you take your car in for service. They took me that seriously. The best part is that i brought my nephew's bike in and they fixed it up for FREE! they re-inflated the tires, fixed his chain and adjusted the seat and handle bars...for FREE! I thought that was cool. On the downside, it is a bit pricey. I must say, I dont know much about bikes, but my intrinsic value of a bicycle is NOT in the thousands. BUT they do have cheaper bikes, like beach cruisers and stretch "ghetto fabulous" bikes, not all just $3,000+ trek racers. Service prices seemed fair. To assemble my bike and get the tire sealant and some other upgrade, it was like $100. So dont come here to be asked how you're doing and to be pampered by sales people...they dont give a shit. I recommend coming for service to your already purchased bike OR come in knowing exactly what you want or dont come at all. read more

When it comes to writing reviews, I set out to be honestly critical, so that a business can improve on areas in which they lack. I have to say, walking into Jax Bicycles two Sundays ago, I went in with steam flaring from my nostrils, ready for war. As soon as I stepped inside the door with my tire (a recurring problem that should...may I repeat SHOULD have been resolved at Jones Bicycles where I bought my Electra Deluxe Cruiser) ready to just scream and yell at the Brand. I was greeted at the door immediately with a "Hello there, if there's anything you need, please feel free to grab one of us, and we'll help you." THAT diffused me instantly. I instantly went from roaring Aries Warrior to Calm, Cool, and Collected. Secondly, at the service counter, they were pretty busy during the weekend to begin with, and Matt the Manager greeted me and I explained the issue with him. I told him I had taken my bike back to Jones in Belmont Shore for repair/warranty issues on the same bike, same issue three times and still the problem was not fixed. Matt ensured me that he himself would call Electra and try to resolve the issue (i.e. get me a new Shimano brake assembly OR a new wheel). Okay, the issue took some time to resolve (week and a half), and Electra sent the wrong color of wheel, but still, the guys at Jax got me the replacement wheel for free and just charged me for the installation, which I thought was way more fair than I expected. I have nothing but praise for Matt and his crew for literally saving the day. This Electra Deluxe bike has been nothing but a total Lemon when dealing with Jones Bikes, but someone from another bike shop went out of their way to try to save the honor of the brand, and ease my frustration from dealing with the same issue over and over...you've got to give them kudos for going out of their way, especially when I didn't even purchase the bike through them...well, that will change moving forward. Not only will I do my business with them from now on, I highly recommend them to my friends and neighbors to use them. They know what customer service is all about. Local store gone downhill. Over the last 15 years, I had shopped the store and purchased a bike for my kid, had services, and bought parts. But, now the store is a corporatized, scripted Trek store. I've got nothing against Trek bikes; they make fine bikes, but they don't make a bike for everyone despite trying like all the big brands. My recent experience was dismal. The sales person could not provide advice about different frame materials and components, and differences with Trek competitors. The sales person could only talk about Trek, Trek, Trek.... Even the guys at corporatized Performance Bikes could talk about competitors. Pat's 605 Cyclery in Norwalk is a better choice if you are looking for a big brand like Trek. read more

This bike shop is for you if you fall into the following categories: 1. You walk in knowing what you want. 2. You aren't a needy customer who needs to get greeted and ask how your day is going before you shop. 3. You have a pretty penny to spend. The pricing of the bikes in this store is not at the fault of the store, but rather the quality of the bikes they sell (Trek, Gary Fisher, etc.). If you want to find bikes that are in the $-$$ range rather than the $$$-$$$$ range, then maybe a different store is a better fit for you (i.e., Target, Walmart). Other than this, the pricing for service is about average. The sales staff is cool. I have no real complaints about this place rather than it is far from my apartment. read more

First and foremost, I wish my bike would've been bought here! They've got all the TREK/Bontrager Bikes and gear IN-STOCK! Although slightly pricier that the website, it's a better deal than paying for shipping. Went in today for a Front Derailleur Adjustment. I was advised that the adjustment would be $15, the bike is 3 weeks old; but no big deal, the price is well worth it. They then advised that they adjusted the front brake for $12, I thought my front brake was fine, but hey for $12 it's good to have it in tip top shape. Here's the sketchy part, when it came time to ring me up, I was told that the prices had increased and my brake adjustment would now be $15 and they had to adjust both the Front and Back Derailleurs (back was working fine) for $20 each for a total of $55 as opposed to what I came in for at $15. I told the service guy I felt mislead to he comped me a derailleur adjustment, still had to pay 8 bucks over what I was going to though. TIP: Make sure you're specific on what you want Adjusted/Fixed and to obtain an accurate price before the work is done. That way no surprises when it comes time to pay. Nonetheless, I'm satisfied with the service and stock of the store. Will definitely come back. read more

My wife and I bought our Trek bikes here and we both loved the girl who was helping us (I wish I remembered her name), she went way beyond what I thought we would get in regards to customer service. Not only did she help us pick out the perfect bikes, but in doing so convinced myself not to purchase a bike that was more expensive ( the larger version of my wife's bike). She hand held us from the time we walk into the store to the time we left and the experience was next to perfect. The only reason their not getting 5 stars is the next day when we picked up the bikes, we had them services and added equipment to them, my bike was just sitting there nothing done but my wife's bike was done and looking pretty. The service manager told me that my bike wasn't done because there were 2 different pick up times on the both of them even know my copy of the bill said other wise. It was no big deal they pumped it out quickly and I was on my way home still impressed with the service I received. Always glad to support local businesses!!! read more

This was my childhood bike shop, even raced for their ABA BMX team, always treated very well and they have a great selection of everything. Only thing I've never liked through all the years is their prices. Stuff seems pretty expensive compared to other competitors (excluding online) BUT, you still get quality parts with a smile, so I can't knock them too hard just because they aren't the cheapest. read more

The short version: I had a really great experience with both sales and service. Read on for details! First, lady Shawn (there's a lady and a gent) is awesome. She wanted me to get the right bike for me - and I haven't ridden in 30 or so years. I really felt like she was on my side and rooting for me. I ordered the bike over the phone a few days ago and came in to pick it up on Christmas Eve. The store was insanely busy, jam packed with folks picking up their Christmas bikes. We were greeted and asked if we needed assistance multiple times - not intrusively, but like a super busy store full of conscientious staff members. When Shawn finished up with her other customer, she brought my bike out for me - what a beauty! I had brought in a new, short crankset that I'd ordered (I have knee troubles that make pedaling difficult-to-impossible). I wasn't confident that they'd be able to install them on Christmas Eve, but Shawn cheerfully said yes, told us to come back at 3:00, and took the works back to the service area. It turns out that the bike needed a new bottom bracket and there was a scramble to find the part my bike needed. All this drama happened without me, however, as I was strolling on the beach and chomping on a burger in blissful ignorance. Here's the thing though: They didn't have to do that. They didn't have to try so hard to find the part that fit and get my bike back together. On a day so busy, no one would have blamed them for shrugging and saying "sorry, can't do it," - not even me! Maybe they were struck by the Christmas spirit and wanted to save the day for a random stranger, or maybe they just like being awesome in general. Who knows? But their behind-the-scenes action was really appreciated. We returned to the store about a half hour early, and my bike was ready. The fabulous service folk and our sales-goddess Shawn made for a happy happy Christmas. I haven't stopped grinning! read more

I'm a little bummed and feel lured into coming here. I called on the phone, asked about a front cargo rack and panniers, whether they had them in stock, and the person on the phone said they did. I went over immediately and they only had a few rear racks in stock. I went ahead and placed my order with an employee on Monday and he told me nonchalantly "yeah, the parts will be in on Wednesday." It's Friday, still no word from them on when the parts will show up. As a cyclist with no car, and taking into account that I live 20 miles away, it's difficult to plan my days around this. I don't know when the parts are going to show up. The manager made it sound like my bike could be in the shop for a couple days to install a simple front rack, also sucks not knowing how long I'm going to have to go without a bike. This bike store doesn't seem to be empathetic to cyclists, and figures I have a car like every other OC resident, so I can just swing by at any time and drop off my bike at a whim. read more

Wow, I see what the bad reviews were about. When Jax was going to make a lot of money off me buying a whole bike, they were willing to give me customer service. When I returned to buy a bell and light, I could not get the staff to interrupt their personal chit-chat to take my money! They weren't rude, they just refused to acknowledge me. Standing by the cash register, waving merchandise is the universal symbol for "do your freaking job, lazy". I didn't try to get them to help me select anything, I didn't want them to do much work besides running my credit card. But that was too much. Considering how much one can buy online, or from REI or Jones on 2nd Street, these guys may not stay in business with the current "work ethic". read more

I've been back twice more. They helped me with a helmet return because i wanted to conserve my $$ and bought the Giro Skyla woman's helmet @ Sports authority and a Bell bike rack @ Sports Authority ( I also had a $20 off coupon). and returned the Bontrager helmet from Jax that cost $99. My total cost at Sports Authority for both items with the coupon was $$88.00 They were cool with the return. I then purchased a bike rack and they offered to install it if I had trouble. I went back and they fixed my inadequate installation for free. They have also adjusted my gears once when I heard some metal rubbing. I'm happy they are my local bike store. It's only a 15 minute bike ride from my house, too. read more

To be perfectly honest the only reason I am giving Jax one star is because their site does not allow you, or at least me, to unsubscribe from receiving emails. It doesn't matter how many times I have tried. It doesn't matter that it says I have successfully unsubscribed and will no long receive emails. It's all one big lie. Over a year ago I purchased a bicycle pump as a gift. The bicycle pump is fine, just what the person wanted, however, I got on their email list and have tried repeatedly to unsubscribe, and ever time it tells me how successful I am, but I keep receiving emails. My suggestion is, unless you want lots of email from Jax, if they ask for an email address don't give it to them because they will hound you for all eternity. read more

Jax is a long established business in Long Beach from whom I've made bike purchases and used for bike repairs over the years. I always had the sense that prices were not great and repairs were gouging me, but my latest experience totally confirmed by concerns. I spent $2,000 on bikes for my wife and I. When I took them back for a tune up I was told that there was a problem with the bearing at the crank on both bikes and we had ridden them too far to qualify for complimentary repair. The odometer that Jax installed when we purchased the bikes read 30 miles. The mileage was so low, because the salesman convinced us to purchase mountain bikes for our local excursions. It quickly became apparent that what I needed was a road bike, which I purchased elsewhere and ride regularly. Jax preys on uninitiated buyers for most of their profit and their repair shop is unscrupulous. read more

Out of 4 bike shops I went to, Jax was one of the best ones. Let me advice you that this place does not sell cheap quality bicycles. If you're coming here, you know that you're shopping for a good quality bike, not some Walmart bike. Your price range is from $$$-$$$$ I walked in and walked around, all the employees were busy assiting other customers, so it gave me sometime to look around. I didn't mind. One of the repair guys actually came out to helped me after seeing me walk back and forth. I thought it was nice. He then offered me his perspective on biking and kinda gave me an idea on the price ranges they had, and what I would get between the prices. He instantly told me he wasn't in sales, but since he did repairs, he knew some of the mistakes people made when buying a bike they grew out of. I wasn't ready to buy a bike that day, so I went home and thought about it. The next day I went in and was immediately offered help.I told them what I wanted the bike for and they offered me several selections. After discussing my needs and wants in a bike, I settled on a Trek road bike. I've never ridden a road bike, so they fitted me to a bike. They were out of stock in the particular model I wanted because the new 2010's were just coming in, so I had to wait for it to be delivered. Once it was delivered the guys there totally helped me out getting to know the bike and making sure I knew how to change gears, take off the wheel, and brake. They offer some sort of tune up after 60 days for free. read more

My wife and I visited Jax BC today and had a great experience. Travis spent a lot of time with my wife test-riding about five bikes before she decided on a really nice Electra seven speed. I was impressed with the amount of time the guys at the shop spent with us. Nowadays its tough to decide what the right bike is for the right conditions... we knew a full mountain bike wouldn't work for us, nor would a pure cruiser... Travis helped us sort out what is important. I also like the 30 day trial period-it made the decision to buy much less stressful. This shop is huge and they have a great inventory. I have been a long time customer of Jax Bicycles. It helps that they are the LBS nearest to me I suppose plus they sell a brand I trust (Trek). I have purchased 3 bikes at the LB location and one at the HB location...3 of these 4 within the past year! Last summer 2011, I walked in on the spur of the moment to look at bikes to use my bonus $ on. At the time I weighed my heaviest ever. I was treated with respect despite my not fitting the cyclist profile. My sales person asked me questions about what type of riding I hoped to do. I was then steered toward the FX line of hybrids. We test rode a few and I was not pressured to get the most expensive of the test models. I ended up putting $ down on the lowest end model. When it came time to finalize the purchase...I decided to get the next model up. This past spring, I was riding a lot and losing weight and found it time to get a road bike. I ended up getting a 3.1 Madone at the HB location (they had one in my size and I was kind of in a hurry to buy it). I had a slight accident less than two months after purchase and needed to replace the frame. **sad** Robert in service and Matt (manager) were both very sympathetic to my plight. Robert especially made me feel better about the situation and was empathetic. I really loved my 3.1 and was really sad I could not get a new 3.1 frame. Not Jax's fault. I was a pest with Robert while going thru the process of deciding on how to deal with the situation: get a whole new 3.1? Get a whole new 4.5? Get a 4.5 frame set only? Issue was color scheme for me (yes I'm a girl...) I went with complete 4.5 instead of frameset. I was there when the bike was "born" - unboxed. I was not treated as if I was bothering anyone but I felt it best if I let Robert work w/o a helicopter cyclist watching so I left the store for a bit. I go into the store frequently. I get a personal greeting every time and complements on my weight loss. Service and advice I get is always excellent. read more

Here is the problem with Jax: terrible service terrible follow through lack of enthusiasm, poor communication, non competitive service prices. I took my bike in for brake repair Sunday morning. They didn't look at the bike and identify the problem till Thursday then said the failed caliper would take a week to week and a half to order from their Nevada warehouse? Try identifying the problem as you said you would Monday. I go online and order said caliper overnight for the same price they quoted me. I talk to them about this timing and lack of follow through and they don't care. That is the general vibe there - non enthusiasts that don't really care. I vow every time to stay away from them like so many other real bicyclists and then time goes by and I try them again and it's the same story. When I had the bike written up the guy proceeded to fart for the entire process and acted like he didn't. Jax off. read more

I was hesitant to come here based on the hit and miss reviews, particularly about their customer service. But I was set on getting a Trek Shift bike and Jax was the closest Trek dealer. I was delightfully surprised at how great their customer service has been. We went in a couple weeks ago and Matt helped us order the bikes we wanted and took time to look around at other locations to see if we could get a deal with last years model. He also gave detailed explanation to all of my questions. When I went in to purchase the bike, Anders was a dream! He helped me make sure the bike fit, tightened some things that needed tightening after a test ride, helped me get the best deal possible, and even had my bike delivered to my house (it didn't fit on the bike rack I brought). He also gave me a tutorial (per my request) on riding a bike with gears as I was upgrading from a cheap beach cruiser and hadn't ridden a geared bike since my 10 speed Huffy as a child. He really went above and beyond, and was a delight to do business with. I'm now happily pedaling all over my neighbhorhood! read more

I am a beginner triathlete and yet have A LOT to learn about my bike (purchased elsewhere before I moved down to LB). So this review is about the service counter, NOT the store in general, about its products, etc. I know very little about bikes, but am slowly learning. The same guy, Ramirez, is always there, and I would like to give him a 5 star rating. He is so incredibly helpful each and every time. I come into pump air into my tires like, every other week, and each time I ask him a series of questions which he patiently answers for me. He's taught me a lot; from when tires, chains and cassettes need to be replaced; how to change the tube of my rear tire, how to take my rear tire off, what the different kinds of tire sizes and quality mean, etc. He is very knowledgeable. Because I bought my bike from a shop far far away, I cant take it for maintenance, even though that store offers free tune ups for life. Because Jax is the closes bike shop to me, I will keep going, even though I think the costs are a bit expensive. I just wished they offered bike fits! As for the store, as far as I can see, they offer a pretty good selection of cruiser type bikes and other recreational bikes. I wouldn't buy a bike here for serious cyclists/triathletes, etc. They have an OK selection of bike parts too, such as tubes, nutrition, gas cartridge, etc read more

Stopped by to check out bikes as we were looking to purchase one and knew nothing about bikes (differences, prices, styles ect). Had a lot of questions and the staff did not hesitate to answer any of them. We left having a better understanding of what we were looking for and what things to consider in making this purchase. Although we did not make a purchase today (as mentioned above we were getting an idea of prices ect) the staff was very understanding and not pushy. Older gentleman kept interrupting the sales guy I was trying to work with for questions. I believe he said his name was Dave, he should learn some manners and to not interject. I have been into Jax Bike Shop several times. Each time the customer service has been pretty good. I recently was looking for a new road bike seat. I was shown a few seats that were on the rack and the employee helping me showed me the seats and tires they had on their clearance table. The one I went with was within my budget and had been great to ride on. I also brought my bike in for a tune up and I had my bike back in 2 days which was great. And when I had a problem today with my bike, they fixed it for free since I just had it tuned up. Thanks Jax. read more

I absolutely dread going to this shop, but it is the closest to my house, but sometimes I have to deal with the unhelpful and snooty workers, so I can get something quick to fix my bike. After riding back from Indian food with a couple of tallboy kingfishers in me, I tried to Bunnyhop a curb. This ended badly when I cased the rear tire and bent the rim. My wife wanted to go to the farmers market and pick up groceries the next weekend with our hipster bikes. So I had to get my rim fixed quickly. When I went to Jax bicycles and talked to Justin, he looked at my rim. He indicated it was pretty messed up and there was no way he had time to fix it that day, but he would give it a quick look. He brought it to the back room and came back five minutes later, with a straightened rim. No charge. That's customer service. Thanks Justin, now I can pick up my craft beer and baguette from whole foods, and tray of strawberries from the farmers market. read more

Horrible customer service! If you're not a regular you get treated like crap. Wheelchair customer had one flat tire and the staff was not empathetic nor professional when handling his needs. On the first visit 20 minutes after opening there was a staff member Zac who was not at all friendly nor personable. After waiting 45 minutes noone was able to assist us for a flat tire. The second visit (same day approx. 1 hour later) the wait was even longer! Then Sherri another staff member was completely RUDE who did nothing but say, "Zac is getting ready to go on lunch" I asked her how many service techs do you have working today? She couldn't tell me a straightforward answer. She basically advised loudly so everyone could hear that there was a 24 hour turnaround for service. I explained to her that I arrived earlier and the wait was outrageous. Additionally how is someone taking a lunch when the hours of operation opens at 11am?! Just visited Jax again last Sunday to consider a road bike and as usual, they were very helpful, friendly and professional. Encountered a staff member "Anders" and he took quite a bit of his time to help answer all my questions. KNows his stuff too! Purchased my Trek mountain bile from them several years ago and bring it in twice a year for a tune up. They do great work and are reasonable in price. They have consumer grade bikes up to build it yourself pro stuff. read more
