in the area for a doctor's visit about seven minutes down the road. so after getting the once over and a brief lecture about diet and exercise I was down the road to Jay Bee's for a dog and fries! I don't think anyone considered that everyone would have a first time here and they all probably go like this: come off Mocksville highway into the lot at speed because there's no deceleration lane, decide in 1/17th of a second to either 1) negotiate a 135° turn into parking, 2) throw it hard right which aims you at the drive-through, 3) slide across the second lane heading for other parking unless there's no one to the right and you can maybe get back into the drive-through. second time is slower so easy peasy. parked and walked in to a mostly empty and very clean dining area, order at the counter to the right; pick from a big board of specials and regulars and combos. bright and cheerful lady took my order and handed me a cup and my ticket. a couple pictures later I picked up my food and headed to the king of groceries sipping an orange soda while happily munching hot salty fries :-0 finished up as I pulled into the lot. fries weren't especially crispy but had a decidedly potatoey flavor. alas, my foot-long came up a little short; plenty long but not real thick and the bun couldn't quite handle the moisture of mustard, onion, and relish. good thing I was sitting still or this would have made such a mess. plenty of other options to choose from, probably stop in next time through.

This is another one of my "treat-yo-self" places. It's old, full of regulars, and you better be prepared to wait in the drive-thru for service because it's always busy. This is the first place I had a Carolina Style hot dog ("all the way") and I don't want to eat it anywhere else. Their hot dogs are split and grilled and Carolina style has mustard, chili, onion and coleslaw. The combo is perfect. Their fries are good too. It's clean and the workers are friendly. I definitely love coming here every so often. (P.S. When influencers do best hot dogs of NC, Jay Bee's is always on the list!)

Best footlong hot dog in the area! Chili has a very distinct flavor, slaw is awesome, and fries are always hot and fresh. Well ran and clean dining room with friendly staff. Cookies are great and the Dole Whip is a great dessert treat especially in the summer.

Carnage from a too wet Chicago dog (that wasn't really a Chicago dog)

I have passed the billboard for Jay Bee's on I-40 many times going to and fro on trips to the mountains. The sign boasts that their hot dogs, at least their footlongs, are famous. I don't see why. They are decent, but not worthy of fame. I ordered three different dogs: All the way: the most disappointing dog of the day. The wiener was average, the slaw was good but wet (creating a soggy mess). The chili was bland, and the entire thing was served to me stone cold. Chicago Dog: pretty good, with a good tasting all-beef wiener, but it, too, was too wet and disintegrated in my hands. As I was eating it, I thought to myself, "This is pretty good, but it seems to be missing something". Upon inspection, I quickly realized that it did not have sport peppers on it. This sin of omission can get you killed in Chicago. And it makes it NOT a Chicago dog. If you want an authentic Chicago dog, I strongly suggest Mike's Chicago dog in Asheboro. Pimento Cheese Dog: best dog of the day, the pimento cheese was mild, but good, and the wiener was grilled and had a nice flavor. I also had some fries, which were above average. The staff was friendly enough. You order at the counter, sit down, then they call your number and you pick it up. Their drink fountain also has the oddly alluring Patio Red Cherry Soda which tastes reminiscent of cherry cough medicine, only better, and smells like Sucrets. Meh.

This place must be a local gem. Wasnt too busy when we arrived around 11am. However by 11:30am it started getting packed. Love the small-time place with awesome prices. Everyone was extremely friendly. I ordered a Number 1. World famous footlong with chili and slaw. Its not a black tie event. However, I VERY much enjoyed it. Light hearted with small prices. My pals all got dessert, which they all looked great!

Short Version - The food is solid (minus the fries) - The staff are very friendly - Jay Bees deserves 3 1/2 stars but Yelp doesn't allow for 1/2 stars - Recommend Long Version Jay Bees is a local place just on the edge of Statesville, right off 64. Well known for their hot dogs but they also sells burgers, shakes and ice cream. They have several hot dogs including a Southern style (chili, slaw, onions, mustard) and a Chicago dog. If you are traveling down highway 64 close to Statesville, and have a hankering for a hot dog and a shake, then I would highly recommend this place. Jay Bees is a local joint and I would rather spend my money with someone local rather than one of the major chains. Regarding the food, the dogs are pretty decent They do use a cheese whiz like spread for the cheese on the dogs but it still tastes good. I read reviews here praising the fries but that was the only part of the meal I did not like. Mine tasted like cheap quality frozen fries. Maybe I caught them on a bad fry night or perhaps they switched to another type of french fries.

Kids had the grilled cheese ( which had so much cheese it was like eating a fresh pizza) and turkey croissant. Both ate their full meals. Husband had the cold cut sub and soup of the day and it was enjoyed. I had the turkey club and potato salad. All which were good. Staff were friendly and shared with us their favorites to help us decide. Quaint little corner shop with a few seats inside and outside.

It's a smaller spot with the ordering counter and kitchen in the back and maybe seating for 26 or so. The folks behind the counter were friendly and the order process was simple. I got their sandwich special, the Buffalo Soldier. It was chicken cutlet with lettuce, tomato, blue cheese, and ranch on ciabatta. I made it a combo with chips and a soda. With tip I think the total was around $17. That was a touch more expensive than I was expecting especially with just a bag of chips on the side. The sandwich was good. Between the blue cheese and the ranch it was really creamy and most of the toppings slide off with the second bite. I don't mind a mess though! The ciabatta bread was the perfect compliment for the sandwich. It was a cute spot and I especially liked the creative sandwich names. I'd go back and try the chicken ceasar wrap next time.
